Identification of phosphorus sites in amorphous LiPON thin film by observing internuclear proximities

Amorphous lithium phosphorus oxynitrides (LiPON), prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering, have become the electrolytes of choice for all-solid-state thin film microbatteries since its discovery in early 1990s. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of understanding of their atomic-level structure and its influence on ionic conductivity. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy represents a promising technique to determine the atomic-level structure of LiPON glasses but is challenging owing to its low sensitivity in the case of thin film materials. Recently, 31P solid-state NMR spectra of LiPON thin films were acquired under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions and assigned with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculations of NMR parameters. However, the identification of the different P local environments in these materials is still a challenge owing to their amorphous structure and the lack of resolution of the 31P MAS NMR spectra. We show herein how the NMR observation of internuclear proximities helps to establish the nature of P sites in LiPON thin films. The 31P-14N proximities are probed by a transfer of population in double resonance (TRAPDOR) experiment, whereas 31P-31P proximities are observed using one-dimensional (1D) 31P double-quantum (DQ)-filtered and two-dimensional (2D) 31P homonuclear correlation spectra as well as dipolar dephasing experiments using DQ-DRENAR (DQ-based dipolar-recoupling effects nuclear alignment reduction) technique. The obtained NMR data further support the recently proposed assignment of 31P NMR signals of LiPON thin films. With the help of this assignment, the simulation of the quantitative 1D 31P NMR spectrum indicates that PO43- orthophosphate anions prevail in LiPON thin films and N atoms are mainly incorporated in [O3PNPO3]5- dimeric anions. PO3N4- isolated tetrahedra and [O3POPO3]4- anions are also present but in smaller amounts.

On the applicability of cosine-modulated pulses for high-resolution solid-state NMR of quadrupolar nuclei with spin > 3/2

In MQMAS-based high-resolution solid-state NMR experiments of half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei, the high radiofrequency (RF) field requirement for the MQ excitation and conversion steps with two hard-pulses is often a sensitivity limiting factor in many practical applications. Recently, the use of two cosine-modulated (cos) low-power (lp) pulses, lasting one-rotor period each, was successfully introduced for efficient MQ excitation and conversion of spin-3/2 nuclei with a reduced RF amplitude. In this study, we extend our previous investigations of spin-3/2 nuclei to systems with higher spin values and discuss the applicability of coslp-MQ excitation and conversion in MQMAS and MQ-HETCOR experiments under slow and fast spinning conditions. For the numerical simulations and experiments we used a moderate magnetic field of 14.1 T. Two spin-5/2 nuclei (⁸⁵Rb and ²⁷Al) are mainly employed with a large variety of C_Q values, but we show that the practical set up is also available for higher spin values, such as spin-9/2 with ⁹³Nb in Cs₄Nb₁₁O₃₀. We demonstrate for nuclei with spin value larger than 3/2 a preferential use of coslp-MQ acquisition for low-gamma nuclei and/or large C_Q values with a much reduced RF-field with respect to that of hard-pulses used with conventional methods.

Comparison of through-space homonuclear correlations between quadrupolar nuclei in solids

Various two-dimensional (2D) homonuclear correlation experiments have been proposed to observe proximities between identical half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei in solids. These experiments select either the single- or double-quantum coherences during the indirect evolution period, t₁. We compare here the efficiency and the robustness of the 2D double-quantum to single-quantum (DQ-SQ) and SQ-SQ homonuclear correlations for two half-integer spin quadrupolar isotopes subject to small chemical shift anisotropy (CSA): ¹¹B with a nuclear spin I = 3/2 and ²⁷Al with I = 5/2. Such a comparison is performed using experiments on two model samples: Li₂B₄O₇ for ¹¹B and AlPO₄-14 for ²⁷Al. For both isotopes, the DQ-SQ homonuclear correlations are recommended since they allow probing the proximities between nuclei with close or identical frequencies. In the case of small or moderate isotropic chemical shift differences (e.g. ¹¹B) the [SR2₂¹] or [BR2₂¹] bracketed DQ-SQ recoupling schemes are recommended; whereas it is the BR2₂¹ un-bracketed one otherwise (e.g. ²⁷Al).

17O solid state NMR as a valuable tool for deciphering reaction mechanisms in mechanochemistry: the case study on the 17O-enrichment of hydrated Ca-pyrophosphate biominerals

The possibility of enriching in ¹⁷O the water molecules within hydrated biominerals belonging to the Ca-pyrophosphate family was investigated, using liquid assisted grinding (LAG) in the presence of ¹⁷O-labelled water. Two phases with different hydration levels, namely triclinic calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (Ca₂P₂O₇·2H₂O, denoted t-CPPD) and monoclinic calcium pyrophosphate tetrahydrate (Ca₂P₂O₇·4H₂O, denoted m-CPPT β) were enriched in ¹⁷O using a "post-enrichment" strategy, in which the non-labelled precursors were ground under gentle milling conditions in the presence of stoichiometric quantities of ¹⁷O-enriched water (introduced here in very small volumes ∼10 μL). Using high-resolution ¹⁷O solid-state NMR (ssNMR) analyses at multiple magnetic fields, and dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP)-enhanced ¹⁷O NMR, it was possible to show that the labelled water molecules are mainly located at the core of the crystal structures, but that they can enter the lattice in different ways, namely by dissolution/recrystallisation or by diffusion. Overall, this work sheds light on the importance of high-resolution ¹⁷O NMR to help decipher the different roles that water can play as a liquid-assisted grinding agent and as a reagent for ¹⁷O-isotopic enrichment.

Improved resolution for spin-3/2 isotopes in solids via the indirect NMR detection of triple-quantum coherences using the T-HMQC sequence

The indirect NMR detection of quadrupolar nuclei in solids under magic-angle spinning (MAS) is possible with the through-space HMQC (heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence) scheme incorporating the TRAPDOR (transfer of population in double-resonance) dipolar recoupling. This sequence, called T-HMQC, exhibits limited t₁-noise. In this contribution, with the help of numerical simulations of spin dynamics, we show that most of the time, the fastest coherence transfer in the T-HMQC scheme is achieved when TRAPDOR recoupling employs the highest radiofrequency (rf) field compatible with the probe specifications. We also demonstrate how the indirect detection of the triple-quantum (3Q) coherences of spin-3/2 quadrupolar nuclei in solids improves the spectral resolution for these isotopes. The sequence is then called T-HMQC₃. We demonstrate the gain in resolution provided by this sequence for the indirect proton detection of ³⁵Cl nuclei in l-histidine∙HCl and l-cysteine∙HCl, as well as that of ²³Na isotope in NaH₂PO₄. These experiments indicate that the gain in resolution depends on the relative values of the chemical and quadrupolar-induced shifts (QIS) for the different spin-3/2 species. In the case of NaH₂PO₄, we show that the transfer efficiency of the T-HMQC₃ sequence employing an rf-field of 80 kHz with a MAS frequency of 62.5 kHz reaches 75% of that of the t₁-noise eliminated (TONE) dipolar-mediated HMQC (D-HMQC) scheme.

Practical considerations on the use of low RF-fields and cosine modulation in high-resolution NMR of I = 3/2 spin quadrupolar nuclei in solids

Despite its ease in experimental set up, the low sensitivity of MQMAS experiments is often a limiting factor in many practical applications. This is mainly due to the large radiofrequency (RF) field requirement of the two short hard-pulses often used for the optimum MQ excitation and conversion steps. Very recently, two novel MQMAS experiments have been proposed for I = 3/2 nuclei, namely lp-MQMAS and coslp-MQMAS, enabling an efficient MQ excitation/conversion with a reduced RF requirement, by utilizing two long pulses lasting one rotor period each, with or without cosine modulation. In this study, we focus on the practical considerations of these new methods and discuss their pros and cons to elucidate their appropriate use under both moderate and fast spinning conditions. Using four I = 3/2 (⁸⁷Rb, ⁷¹Ga, ³⁵Cl and ²³Na) nuclei at a moderate magnetic field (B₀ = 14.1 T), we show the superior use of these experiments, especially for samples with large C_Q values and/or low-gamma nuclei. Compared to all other existing sequences, the coslp-MQMAS method with initial WURST signal enhancement is the most robust, efficient and resolved high-resolution 2D method for spin 3/2 nuclei. Furthermore, using {²³Na}-¹H spin systems, we demonstrate the sensitivity advantage of the WURST coslp-MQ-HETCOR acquisition upon ¹H detection and fast MAS conditions.

Chemical exchange of labile protons by deuterium enables selective detection of pharmaceuticals in solid formulations

Chemically assisted swapping of labile protons by deuterons is presented for amino acids, polysaccharides, pharmaceutical compounds, and their solid formulations. Solid-state packing interactions in these compounds are elucidated by ¹H-²H isotope correlation NMR spectroscopy (iCOSY). A minuscule concentration of dopamine, 5 wt% or ∼100 μg, in a solid formulation can be detected by ²H NMR at 28.2 T (¹H, 1200 MHz) in under a minute.

Combining heteronuclear correlation NMR with spin-diffusion to detect relayed Cl-H-H and N-H-H proximities in molecular solids

Analysis of short-to-intermediate range intermolecular interactions offers a great way of characterizing the solid-state organization of small molecules and materials. This can be achieved by two-dimensional (2D) homo- and heteronuclear correlation NMR spectroscopy, for example, by carrying out experiments at high magnetic fields in conjunction with fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) techniques. But, detecting 2D peaks for heteronuclear dipolar coupled spin pairs separated by greater than 3 Å is not always straightforward, particularly when low-gamma quadrupolar nuclei are involved. Here, we present a 2D correlation NMR experiment that combines the advantages of heteronuclear-multiple quantum coherence (HMQC) and proton-based spin-diffusion (SD) pulse sequences using radio-frequency-driven-recouping (RFDR) to probe inter and intramolecular ¹H-X (X = ¹⁴N, ³⁵Cl) interactions. This experiment can be used to acquire 2D ¹H{X}-HMQC filtered ¹H-¹H correlation as well as 2D ¹H-X HMQC spectra. Powder forms of dopamine·HCl and l-histidine·HCl·H₂O are characterized at high fields (21.1 T and 18.8 T) with fast MAS (60 kHz) using the 2D HMQC-SD-RFDR approach. Solid-state NMR results are complemented with NMR crystallography analyses using the gauge-including projector augmented wave (GIPAW) approach. For histidine·HCl·H₂O, 2D peaks associated with ¹⁴N-¹H-¹H and ³⁵Cl-¹H-¹H distances of up to 4.4 and 3.9 Å have been detected. This is further corroborated by the observation of 2D peaks corresponding to ¹⁴N-¹H-¹H and ³⁵Cl-¹H-¹H distances of up to 4.2 and 3.7 Å in dopamine·HCl, indicating the suitability of the HMQC-SD-RFDR experiments for detecting medium-range proximities in molecular solids.

First Direct Insight into the Local Environment and Dynamics of Water Molecules in the Whewellite Mineral Phase: Mechanochemical Isotopic Enrichment and High-Resolution 17O and 2H NMR Analyses

Calcium oxalate minerals of the general formula CaC₂O₄ ^. xH₂O are widely present in nature and usually associated with pathological calcifications, constituting up to 70-80% of the mineral component of renal calculi. The monohydrate phase (CaC₂O₄ ^.H₂O, COM) is the most stable form, accounting for the majority of the hydrated calcium oxalates found. These mineral phases have been studied extensively via X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy and, to a lesser extent, using ¹H, ¹³C, and ⁴³Ca solid-state NMR spectroscopy. However, several aspects of their structure and reactivity are still unclear, such as the evolution from low- to high-temperature COM structures (LT-COM and HT-COM, respectively) and the involvement of water molecules in this phase transition. Here, we report for the first time a ¹⁷O and ²H solid-state NMR investigation of the local structure and dynamics of water in the COM phase. A new procedure for the selective ¹⁷O- and ²H-isotopic enrichment of water molecules within the COM mineral is presented using mechanochemistry, which employs only microliter quantities of enriched water and leads to exchange yields up to ∼30%. ¹⁷O NMR allows both crystallographically inequivalent water molecules in the LT-COM structure to be resolved, while ²H NMR studies provide unambiguous evidence that these water molecules are undergoing different types of motions at high temperatures without exchanging with one another. Dynamics appear to be essential for water molecules in these structures, which have not been accounted for in previous structural studies on the HT-COM structure due to lack of available tools, highlighting the importance of such NMR investigations for refining the overall knowledge on biologically relevant minerals like calcium oxalates.

Revealing Brønsted Acidic Bridging SiOHAl Groups on Amorphous Silica-Alumina by Ultrahigh Field Solid-State NMR

Amorphous silica-aluminas (ASAs) are important acidic catalysts and supports for many industrially essential and sustainable processes. The identification of surface acid sites with their local structures on ASAs is of critical importance for tuning their catalytic properties but still remains a great challenge and is under debate. Here, ultrahigh magnetic field (35.2 T) ²⁷Al-{¹H} D-HMQC (dipolar-mediated heteronuclear multiple-quantum correlation) two-dimensional NMR experiments demonstrate two types of Brønsted acid sites in ASA catalysts. In addition to the known pseudobridging silanol acid sites, the use of ultrahigh field NMR provides the first direct experimental evidence for the existence of bridging silanol (BS: SiOHAl) acid sites in ASAs, which has been hotly debated in the past few decades. This discovery provides new opportunities for scientists and engineers to develop and apply ASAs in various reaction processes due to the significance of BS in chemical and fuel productions based on its strong Brønsted acidity.

Accelerating the acquisition of high-resolution quadrupolar MQ/ST-HETCOR 2D spectra under fast MAS via 1H detection and through-space population transfers

Recently, we established an experimental setup protocol to perform the population transfer from half-integer quadrupolar spin to ¹H nuclei under fast MAS in the context of MQ-HETCOR experiments. In this article, we further develop the high-resolution 2D HETCOR methods by ST-based approaches, making use of the sensitivity advantage of STMAS over its MQMAS counterpart. In a similar manner to the previous work, which utilized CP and RINEPT for the population transfer, we also demonstrate the experimental setup protocol for PRESTO. Using {²³Na}-¹H and {²⁷Al}-¹H spin systems of powder samples, we compare a series of MQ/ST-HETCOR 2D spectra to discuss the pros and cons of the distinct MQ/ST-based approaches for spin 3/2 and 5/2 nuclei, respectively. We also incorporate two experimental tricks to reduce the experimental time of such long 2D experiments, the Optimized Rotor-Synchronization (ORS) and the Non-Uniform Sampling (NUS), in the context of high-resolution spectra of half-integer quadrupolar spin nuclei.

NMR Crystallography Reveals Carbonate Induced Al-Ordering in ZnAl Layered Double Hydroxide

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) serve a score of applications in catalysis, drug delivery, and environmental remediation. Smarter crystallography, combining X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy revealed how interplay between carbonate and pH determines the LDH structure and Al ordering in ZnAl LDH. Carbonate intercalated ZnAl LDHs were synthesized at different pH (pH 8.5, pH 10.0, pH 12.5) with a Zn/Al ratio of 2, without subsequent hydrothermal treatment to avoid extensive recrystallisation. In ideal configuration, all Al cations should be part of the LDH and be coordinated with 6 Zn atoms, but NMR revealed two different Al local environments were present in all samples in a ratio dependent on synthesis pH. NMR-crystallography, integrating NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, succeeded to identify them as Al residing in the highly ordered crystalline phase, next to Al in disordered material. With increasing synthesis pH, crystallinity increased, and the side phase fraction decreased. Using ¹ H-¹³ C, ¹³ C-²⁷ Al HETCOR NMR in combination with ²⁷ Al MQMAS, ²⁷ Al-DQ-SQ measurements and Rietveld refinement on high-resolution PXRD data, the extreme anion exchange selectivity of these LDHs for CO₃ ^2- over HCO₃ ^- was linked to strict Al and CO₃ ^2- ordering in the crystalline LDH. Even upon equilibration of the LDH in pure NaHCO₃ solutions, only CO₃ ^2- was adsorbed by the LDH. This reveals the structure directing role of bivalent cations such as CO₃ ^2- during crystallization of [M²⁺ ₄ M³⁺ ₂ (OH)₂ ]²⁺ [A^2- ]₁ ⋅yH₂ O LDH phases.

Efficient transfer of DNP-enhanced 1 H magnetization to half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solids at moderate spinning rate

We show herein how the proton magnetization enhanced by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) can be efficiently transferred at moderate magic-angle spinning (MAS) frequencies to half-integer quadrupolar nuclei, S ≥ 3/2, using the Dipolar-mediated Refocused Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer (D-RINEPT) technique, in which a symmetry-based SR 4 1 2 recoupling scheme built from adiabatic inversion ¹ H pulses reintroduces the ¹ H-S dipolar couplings, while suppressing the ¹ H-¹ H ones. The use of adiabatic pulses also improves the robustness to offsets and radiofrequency (rf)-field inhomogeneity. Furthermore, the efficiency of the polarization transfer is further improved by using ¹ H composite pulses and continuous-wave irradiations between the recoupling blocks, as well as by manipulating the S satellite transitions during the first recoupling block. Furthermore, in the case of large ¹ H-S dipolar couplings, the D-RINEPT variant with two pulses on the quadrupolar channel results in an improved transfer efficiency. We compare here the performances of this new adiabatic scheme with those of its parent version with single π pulses, as well as with those of PRESTO and CPMAS transfers. This comparison is performed using simulations as well as DNP-enhanced ²⁷ Al, ⁹⁵ Mo, and ¹⁷ O NMR experiments on isotopically unmodified γ-alumina, hydrated titania-supported MoO₃ , Mg(OH)₂ , and l-histidine·HCl·H₂ O. The introduced RINEPT method outperforms the existing methods, both in terms of efficiency and robustness to rf-field inhomogeneity and offset.

Through-space 11 B-27 Al correlation: Influence of the recoupling channel

Through-space heteronuclear correlation (D-HETCOR) experiments based on heteronuclear multiple-quantum correlation (D-HMQC) and refocused insensitive nuclei enhanced by polarization transfer (D-RINEPT) sequences have been proven to be useful approaches for the detection of the spatial proximity between half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solids under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions. The corresponding pulse sequences employ coherence transfers mediated by heteronuclear dipolar interactions, which are reintroduced under MAS by radiofrequency irradiation of only one of the two correlated nuclei. We investigate herein using numerical simulations of spin dynamics and solid-state NMR experiments on magnesium aluminoborate glass how the choice of the channel to which the heteronuclear dipolar recoupling is applied affects the transfer efficiency of D-HMQC and D-RINEPT sequences between ¹¹ B and ²⁷ Al nuclei. Experimental results show that maximum transfer efficiency is achieved when the recoupling scheme is applied to the channel, for which the spin magnetization is parallel to the B₀ axis in average.

Labeling and Probing the Silica Surface Using Mechanochemistry and 17 O NMR Spectroscopy*

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in developing cost‐efficient, fast, and user‐friendly ¹⁷O enrichment protocols to help to understand the structure and reactivity of materials by using ¹⁷O NMR spectroscopy. Here, we show for the first time how ball milling (BM) can be used to selectively and efficiently enrich the surface of fumed silica, which is widely used at industrial scale. Short milling times (up to 15 min) allowed modulation of the enrichment level (up to ca. 5 %) without significantly changing the nature of the material. High‐precision ¹⁷O compositions were measured at different milling times by using large‐geometry secondary‐ion mass spectrometry (LG‐SIMS). High‐resolution ¹⁷O NMR analyses (including at 35.2 T) allowed clear identification of the signals from siloxane (Si−O−Si) and silanols (Si−OH), while DNP analyses, performed by using direct ¹⁷O polarization and indirect ¹⁷O{¹H} CP excitation, agreed with selective labeling of the surface. Information on the distribution of Si−OH environments at the surface was obtained from 2D ¹H−¹⁷O D‐HMQC correlations. Finally, the surface‐labeled silica was reacted with titania and using ¹⁷O DNP, their common interface was probed and Si−O−Ti bonds identified.

Probing 29Si-17O connectivities and proximities by solid-state NMR

The measurement of dipolar and J- couplings between ²⁹Si and ¹⁷O isotopes is challenging owing to (i) the low abundance of both isotopes and (ii) their close Larmor frequencies, which only differ by 19%. These issues are circumvented here by the use of isotopic enrichment and dedicated triple-resonance magic-angle spinning NMR probe. The surface of ²⁹Si-enriched silica was labelled with ¹⁷O isotope and heated at 80 and 200 °C. ²⁹Si-¹⁷O connectivities and proximities were probed using two-dimensional (2D) through-bond and through-space heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherences (J- and D-HMQC) experiments between ¹⁷O and ²⁹Si nuclei. The simulation of the build-up of the J- and D-HMQC signals allowed the first experimental measurement of J- and dipolar coupling constants between ¹⁷O and ²⁹Si nuclei. These HMQC experiments allow distinguishing two distinct siloxane (SiOSi) oxygen sites: (i) those covalently bonded to Q³ and Q⁴ groups, having a hydroxyl group as a second neighbour and (ii) those covalently bonded to two Q⁴ groups. The measured J- and dipolar coupling constants of siloxane ¹⁷O nucleus with Q^{4 29}Si nuclei differ from those with Q^{3 29}Si nuclei. These results indicate that the ²⁹Si-¹⁷O one-bond J-coupling and Si-O bond length depend on the second neighbours of the Si atoms.

A comparison of through-space population transfers from half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei to 1H using MQ-HETCOR and MQ-SPAM-HETCOR under fast MAS

In this article, we compare the various schemes of magnetization transfer from half-integer quadrupolar spins to ¹H nuclei and we establish an efficient protocol to perform these transfers under MQMAS high-resolution with the MQ-HETCOR and MQ-SPAM-HETCOR experiments under fast MAS. The MQMAS efficiencies are analyzed with SIMPSON simulations, and the CPMAS and RINEPT magnetization transfers are compared at 62.5 kHz MAS using {²³Na}-¹H and {²⁷Al}-¹H MQ-HETCOR and MQ-SPAM-HETCOR experiments performed on NaH₂PO4, Na₂HPO₄, Na citrate dihydrate and ipa-AlPO-14 powder samples. We discuss the pros and cons of these approaches, aiming to record 2D spectra of the best possible quality under fast MAS. We also incorporate some experimental approaches to reduce the total experiment time of such long 2D experiments.

Improved NMR transfer of magnetization from protons to half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei at moderate and high magic-angle spinning frequencies

Half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei are the only magnetic isotopes for the majority of the chemical elements. Therefore, the transfer of polarization from protons to these isotopes under magic-angle spinning (MAS) can provide precious insights into the interatomic proximities in hydrogen-containing solids, including organic, hybrid, nanostructured and biological solids. This transfer has recently been combined with dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in order to enhance the NMR signal of half-integer quadrupolar isotopes. However, the cross-polarization transfer lacks robustness in the case of quadrupolar nuclei, and we have recently introduced as an alternative technique a D -RINEPT (through-space refocused insensitive nuclei enhancement by polarization transfer) scheme combining a heteronuclear dipolar recoupling built from adiabatic pulses and a continuous-wave decoupling. This technique has been demonstrated at 9.4 T with moderate MAS frequencies, ν R ≈ 10 -15 kHz, in order to transfer the DNP-enhanced 1 H polarization to quadrupolar nuclei. Nevertheless, polarization transfers from protons to quadrupolar nuclei are also required at higher MAS frequencies in order to improve the 1 H resolution. We investigate here how this transfer can be achieved at ν R ≈ 20 and 60 kHz. We demonstrate that the D -RINEPT sequence using adiabatic pulses still produces efficient and robust transfers but requires large radio-frequency (rf) fields, which may not be compatible with the specifications of most MAS probes. As an alternative, we introduce robust and efficient variants of the D -RINEPT and PRESTO (phase-shifted recoupling effects a smooth transfer of order) sequences using symmetry-based recoupling schemes built from single and composite π pulses. Their performances are compared using the average Hamiltonian theory and experiments at B 0 = 18.8  T on γ -alumina and isopropylamine-templated microporous aluminophosphate (AlPO4 -14), featuring low and significant 1 H-1 H dipolar interactions, respectively. These experiments demonstrate that the 1 H magnetization can be efficiently transferred to 27 Al nuclei using D -RINEPT with SR 4 1 2 (2700 90180 ) recoupling and using PRESTO with R 22 2 7 (1800 ) or R 16 7 6 (2700 90180 ) schemes at ν R = 20 or 62.5 kHz, respectively. The D -RINEPT and PRESTO recoupling schemes complement each other since the latter is affected by dipolar truncation, whereas the former is not. We also analyze the losses during these recoupling schemes, and we show how these magnetization transfers can be used at ν R = 62.5  kHz to acquire in 72 min 2D HETCOR (heteronuclear correlation) spectra between 1 H and quadrupolar nuclei, with a non-uniform sampling (NUS).

Hadamard acquisition of 13 C-13 C 2-D correlation NMR spectra

We show that a multiselective excitation with Hadamard encoding is a powerful tool for 2-D acquisition of ¹³ C─¹³ C homonuclear correlations. This method is not designed to improve the sensitivity, but rather to reduce the experiment time, provided there is sufficient sensitivity. Therefore, it allows fast acquisition of such 2-D spectra in labeled molecules. The technique has been demonstrated using a U─¹³ C─¹⁵ N histidine hydrochloride monohydrate sample allowing each point of the build-up curves of the ¹³ C─¹³ C cross-peaks to be recorded within 4 min 35 s, which is very difficult with conventional methods. Using the U─¹³ C─¹⁵ N f-MLF sample, we have demonstrated that the method can be applied to molecules with 14 ¹³ C resonances with a minimum frequency separation of 240 Hz.

gem-Diol-Type Intermediate in the Activation of a Ketone on Sn-β Zeolite as Studied by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Lewis acid zeolites have found increasing application in the field of biomass conversion, in which the selective transformation of carbonyl-containing molecules is of particular importance due to their relevance in organic synthesis. Mechanistic insight into the activation of carbonyl groups on Lewis acid sites is challenging and critical for the understanding of the catalytic process, which requires the identification of reaction intermediates. Here we report the observation of a stable surface gem-diol-type species in the activation of acetone on Sn-β zeolite. ¹³ C, ¹¹⁹ Sn, and ¹³ C-¹¹⁹ Sn double-resonance NMR spectroscopic studies demonstrate that only the open Sn site ((SiO)₃ Sn-OH) on Sn-β is responsible for the formation of the surface species. ¹³ C MAS NMR experiments together with density functional theory calculations suggest that the gem-diol-type species exhibits high reactivity and can serve as an active intermediate in the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-Oppenauer (MPVO) reaction of acetone with cyclohexanol. The gem-diol-type species offers an energy-preferable pathway for the direct carbon-to-carbon hydrogen transfer between ketone and alcohol. The results provide new insights into the transformation of carbonyl-containing molecules catalyzed by Lewis acid zeolites.

Deciphering the Origin of High Electrochemical Performance in a Novel Ti-Substituted P2/O3 Biphasic Cathode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

The layered Mn-based oxides (Na_xMnO₂), which is one of the most promising cathode families for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries, have received considerable attention because of their tunable electrochemical performances and low costs. Herein, a novel P2/O3 intergrown Li-containing Na_0.8Li_0.27Mn_0.68Ti_0.05O₂ cathode material prepared by Ti-substitution into Mn-site is reported. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of the biphasic composite structure and inactive d⁰ element substitution, this P2/O3 electrode exhibits high initial charge/discharge capacity and excellent cycling performance. The combination of different characterization techniques including solid-state NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray adsorption spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy gives insights into the local electronic environment, the redox chemistry, and also the microstructure rigidity of these cathode materials upon cycling. On the basis of comprehensive comparison with the Ti-free P2/O3-Na_0.8Li_0.27Mn_0.73O₂, the observed improvement on the electrochemical performance is primarily attributed to the mitigation of notorious Mn³⁺/Mn⁴⁺ redox and the enhanced stability of the oxygen charge compensation behavior. From the viewpoint of structure evolution, Ti-substitution restrains the Li⁺ loss and irreversible structural degradation during cycling. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the electronic and crystal structure evolutions after inactive d⁰ element substitution and may shed light on the rational design of high-performance P2/O3 biphasic Mn-based layered cathodes.

Acidity enhancement through synergy of penta- and tetra-coordinated aluminum species in amorphous silica networks

Amorphous silica-aluminas (ASAs) are widely used in acid-catalyzed C-H activation reactions and biomass conversions in large scale, which can be promoted by increasing the strength of surface Brønsted acid sites (BAS). Here, we demonstrate the first observation on a synergistic effect caused by two neighboring Al centers interacting with the same silanol group in flame-made ASAs with high Al content. The two close Al centers decrease the electron density on the silanol oxygen and thereby enhance its acidity, which is comparable to that of dealuminated zeolites, while ASAs with small or moderate Al contents provide mainly moderate acidity, much lower than that of zeolites. The ASAs with enhanced acidity exhibit outstanding performances in C-H bond activation of benzene and glucose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, simultaneously with an excellent calcination stability and resistance to leaching, and they offer an interesting potential for a wide range of acid and multifunctional catalysis.

The acidic nature of "NMR-invisible" tri-coordinated framework aluminum species in zeolites

The unambiguous characterization of different acid sites in zeolites is of great importance for understanding their catalytic performance and the rational design of highly efficient zeolite catalysts. In addition to various well-characterized extra-framework Al species, a tri-coordinated framework aluminum species can also serve as a Lewis acid site in zeolites, which is "NMR-invisible" owing to its extremely distorted local environment. Here we provide a feasible and reliable approach to elucidate the acidic nature of the tri-coordinated framework Al in dehydrated H-ZSM-5 zeolites via sensitivity-enhanced two-dimensional (2D) multiple nuclear correlation NMR experiments coupled with trimethylphosphine oxide (TMPO) probe molecules. Two types of tri-coordinated framework Al sites have been unambiguously identified, which amount to 11.6% of the total Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. Furthermore, it was found that synergistic effects arising from the close spatial proximity between the tri-coordinated framework Al site and the Brønsted acid site lead to the generation of superacidity (with an acid strength stronger than 100% H₂SO₄) in the zeolite.

Recent developments in MAS DNP-NMR of materials

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a powerful technique for the characterization of the atomic-level structure and dynamics of materials. Nevertheless, the use of this technique is often limited by its lack of sensitivity, which can prevent the observation of surfaces, defects or insensitive isotopes. Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) has been shown to improve by one to three orders of magnitude the sensitivity of NMR experiments on materials under Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS), at static magnetic field B₀ ≥ 5 T, conditions allowing for the acquisition of high-resolution spectra. The field of DNP-NMR spectroscopy of materials has undergone a rapid development in the last ten years, spurred notably by the availability of commercial DNP-NMR systems. We provide here an in-depth overview of MAS DNP-NMR studies of materials at high B₀ field. After a historical perspective of DNP of materials, we describe the DNP transfers under MAS, the transport of polarization by spin diffusion and the various contributions to the overall sensitivity of DNP-NMR experiments. We discuss the design of tailored polarizing agents and the sample preparation in the case of materials. We present the DNP-NMR hardware and the influence of key experimental parameters, such as microwave power, magnetic field, temperature and MAS frequency. We give an overview of the isotopes that have been detected by this technique, and the NMR methods that have been combined with DNP. Finally, we show how MAS DNP-NMR has been applied to gain new insights into the structure of organic, hybrid and inorganic materials with applications in fields, such as health, energy, catalysis, optoelectronics etc.

Analysis of HMQC experiments applied to a spin ½ nucleus subject to very large CSA

The acquisition of solid-state NMR spectra of "heavy" spin I = 1/2 nuclei, such as ¹¹⁹Sn, ¹⁹⁵Pt, ¹⁹⁹Hg or ²⁰⁷Pb can often prove challenging due to the presence of large chemical shift anisotropy (CSA), which can cause significant broadening of spectral lines. However, previous publications have shown that well-resolved spectra can be obtained via inverse ¹H detection using HMQC experiments in combination with fast magic angle spinning. In this work, the efficiencies of different ¹⁹⁵Pt excitation schemes are analyzed using SIMPSON numerical simulations and experiments performed on cis- and transplatin samples. These schemes include: hard pulses (HP), selective long pulses (SLP) and rotor-synchronized DANTE trains of pulses. The results show that for spectra of species with very large CSA, HP is little efficient, but that both DANTE and SLP provide efficient excitation profiles over a wide range of CSA values. In particular, it is revealed that the SLP scheme is highly robust to offset, pulse amplitude and length, and is simple to set up. These factors make SLP ideally suited to widespread use by "non-experts" for carrying out analyses of materials containing "heavy" spin I = 1/2 nuclei that are subject to very large CSAs. Finally, the existence of an "intermediate" excitation regime, with an rf-field strength in between those of HP and SLP, which is effective for large CSA, is demonstrated. It must be noted that in some samples, multiple sites may exist with very different CSAs. This is the case for ¹⁹⁵Pt species with either square-planar or octahedral structures, with large or small CSA, respectively. These two types of CSAs can only be excited simultaneously with DANTE trains, which scale up the effective rf-field. Another way to obtain all the information is to perform two different experiments: one with SLP and the second with HP to excite the sites with moderate/large and small/moderate CSAs, respectively. These two complementary experiments, recorded with two different spinning speeds, can also be used to discriminate the center-band resonances from the spinning sidebands.

Improved sensitivity and quantification for 29Si NMR experiments on solids using UDEFT (Uniform Driven Equilibrium Fourier Transform)

We demonstrate the possibility to use UDEFT (Uniform Driven Equilibrium Fourier Transform) technique in order to improve the sensitivity and the quantification of one-dimensional ²⁹Si NMR experiments under magic-angle spinning (MAS). We derive an analytical expression of the signal-to-noise ratios of UDEFT and single-pulse (SP) experiments subsuming the contributions of transient and steady-state regimes. Using numerical spin dynamics simulations and experiments on ²⁹Si-enriched amorphous silica and borosilicate glass, we show that 59₁₈₀298₀59₁₈₀ refocusing composite π-pulse and the adiabatic inversion using tanh/tan modulation improve the robustness of UDEFT technique to rf-inhomogeneity, offset, and chemical shift anisotropy. These pulses combined with a two-step phase cycle limit the pulse imperfections and the artifacts produced by stimulated echoes. The sensitivity of SP, UDEFT and CPMG (Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill) techniques are experimentally compared on functionalized and non-functionalized mesoporous silica. Furthermore, experiments on a flame retardant material prove that UDEFT technique provides a better quantification of ²⁹Si sites with higher sensitivity than SP method.

Evaluation of excitation schemes for indirect detection of 14N via solid-state HMQC NMR experiments

It has previously been shown that ¹⁴N NMR spectra can be reliably obtained through indirect detection via HMQC experiments. This method exploits the transfer of coherence between single-(SQ) or double-quantum (DQ) ¹⁴N coherences, and SQ coherences of a suitable spin-1/2 'spy' nucleus, e.g., ¹H. It must be noted that SQ-SQ methods require a carefully optimized setup to minimize the broadening related to the first-order quadrupole interaction (i.e., an extremely well-adjusted magic angle and a highly stable spinning speed), whereas DQ-SQ ones do not. In this work, the efficiencies of four ¹⁴N excitation schemes (DANTE, XiX, Hard Pulse (HP), and Selective Long Pulse (SLP)) are compared using J-HMQC based numerical simulations and either SQ-SQ or DQ-SQ ¹H-{¹⁴N} D-HMQC experiments on l-histidine HCl and N-acetyl-l-valine at 18.8 T and 62.5 kHz MAS. The results demonstrate that both DANTE and SLP provide a more efficient ¹⁴N excitation profile than XiX and HP. Furthermore, it is shown that the SLP scheme: (i) is efficient over a large range of quadrupole interaction, (ii) is highly robust to offset and rf-pulse length and amplitude, and (iii) is very simple to set up. These factors make SLP ideally suited to widespread, non-specialist use in solid-state NMR analyses of nitrogen-containing materials.

Magnetization transfer from protons to quadrupolar nuclei in solid-state NMR using PRESTO or dipolar-mediated refocused INEPT methods

In solid-state NMR spectroscopy, the through-space transfer of magnetization from protons to quadrupolar nuclei is employed to probe proximities between those isotopes. Furthermore, such transfer, in conjunction with Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP), can enhance the NMR sensitivity of quadrupolar nuclei, as it allows the transfer of DNP-enhanced ¹H polarization to surrounding nuclei. We compare here the performances of two approaches to achieve such transfer: PRESTO (Phase-shifted Recoupling Effects a Smooth Transfer of Order), which is currently the method of choice to achieve the magnetization transfer from protons to quadrupolar nuclei and which has been shown to supersede Cross-Polarization under Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS) for quadrupolar nuclei and D-RINEPT (Dipolar-mediated Refocused Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer) using symmetry-based SR4₁² recoupling, which has already been employed to transfer the magnetization in the reverse way from half-integer quadrupolar spin to protons. We also test the PRESTO sequence with R16₇⁶ recoupling using 270₀90₁₈₀ composite π-pulses as inversion elements. This recoupling scheme, which has previously been proposed to reintroduce ¹H Chemical Shift Anisotropy (CSA) at high MAS frequencies with high robustness to rf-field inhomogeneity, has not so far been employed to reintroduce dipolar couplings with protons. These various techniques to transfer magnetization from protons to quadrupolar nuclei are analyzed using (i) an average Hamiltonian theory, (ii) numerical simulations of spin dynamics, and (iii) experimental ¹H → ²⁷Al and ¹H → ¹⁷O transfers in as-synthesized AlPO₄-14 and ¹⁷O-labelled fumed silica, respectively. The experiments and simulations are done at two magnetic fields (9.4 and 18.8 T) and several spinning speeds (15, 18-24 and 60 kHz). This analysis indicates that owing to its γ-encoded character, PRESTO yields the highest transfer efficiency at low magnetic fields and MAS frequencies, whereas owing to its higher robustness to rf-field inhomogeneity and chemical shifts, D-RINEPT is more sensitive at high fields and MAS frequencies, notably for protons exhibiting large offset or CSA, such as those involved in hydrogen bonds.

Forcing the 'lazy' protons to work

The combination of cross-polarization (CP) with flip-back (FB) pulse has enabled in NMR the enhancement of 13C sensitivity and the decrease of the recycling delay at both moderate and fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) frequencies. However, only continuous-wave (CW) decoupling is presently compatible with FB-pulse (FB-CW), and depending on the CW radio-frequency (rf) field, either an insignificant sensitivity gain or an acquisition time-dependent gain and a low 13C resolution are obtained. In this study, we propose a new FB-pulse method in which radio frequency-driven recoupling (RFDR) is used as the 1H-13C decoupling scheme to overcome these drawbacks. The performances of FB-RFDR in terms of decoupling efficiency and sensitivity gain are tested on both natural abundance (NA) and uniformly 13C-15N labeled l-histidine·HCl·H2O (Hist) samples at a MAS frequency of νR = 70 kHz. The results show the superiority of RFDR over the CW decoupling with respect to these criteria. Importantly, they reveal that the sensitivity gain offered by FB-RFDR is nearly independent of the decoupling/acquisition duration. The application of FB-RFDR on NA-Hist and sucrose yields a sensitivity gain between 60 and 100% compared to conventional FB-CW and CPMAS-SPINAL experiments. Moreover, we compare the 13C sensitivities of NA-Hist obtained by our 1D FB-RFDR method and 2D 1H-{13C} double-CP acquisition. Both methods provide similar 13C sensitivity and are complementary. Indeed, the 2D method has the advantage of also providing the 1H-13C spatial proximities, but its sensitivity for quaternary carbons is limited; whereas our 1D FB-RFDR method is more independent of the type of carbon, and can provide a 13C 1D spectrum in a shorter experimental time. We also test the feasibility of FB-RFDR at a moderate frequency of νR = 20 kHz, but the experimental results demonstrate a poor resolution as well as a negligible sensitivity gain.

Observation of proximities between spin-1/2 and quadrupolar nuclei in solids: Improved robustness to chemical shielding using adiabatic symmetry-based recoupling

We introduce a novel heteronuclear dipolar recoupling based on the R2₁^-1 symmetry, which uses the tanh/tan (tt) shaped pulse as a basic inversion element and is denoted R2₁^-1(tt). Using first-order average Hamiltonian theory, we show that this sequence is non-γ-encoded and that it reintroduces the |m| = 1 spatial component of the Chemical Shift Anisotropy (CSA) of the irradiated isotope and its heteronuclear dipolar interactions. Using numerical simulations and one-dimensional (1D) ²⁷Al-{³¹P} through-space D-HMQC (Dipolar Heteronuclear Multiple-Quantum Correlation) experiments on VPI-5, we compare the performances of this recoupling to those of other non-γ-encoded |m| = 1 heteronuclear recoupling schemes: REDOR (Rotational-Echo DOuble Resonance), SFAM (Simultaneous Frequency and Amplitude Modulation) and R4₂^-1(tt). Such comparison indicates that the R2₁^-1(tt) scheme is more robust to CSA, offset and radiofrequency field inhomogeneities than the other schemes. We take advantage of the high robustness of R2₁^-1(tt) to CSA and offset to demonstrate the possibility to correlate the signals of ²⁰⁷Pb isotope with those of neighboring half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei. Such approach is demonstrated experimentally by acquiring ¹¹B-{²⁰⁷Pb} D-HMQC 2D spectra of Pb₄O(BO₃)₂ crystalline powder.

Indirect detection of broad spectra in solid-state NMR using interleaved DANTE trains

We analyze the performances and the optimization of ¹H-{I} HMQC experiments using basic and interleaved DANTE schemes for the indirect detection of nuclei I = 1/2 or 1 exhibiting wide lines dominated by chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) or quadrupole interaction, respectively. These sequences are first described using average Hamiltonian theory. Then, we analyze using numerical simulations (i) the optimal lengths of the DANTE train and the individual pulses, (ii) the robustness of these experiments to offset, and (iii) the optimal choice of the defocusing and refocusing times for both ¹H-{I} J- and D-HMQC sequences for ¹⁹⁵Pt (I = 1/2) and ¹⁴N (I = 1) nuclei subject to large CSA and quadrupole interaction, respectively. These simulations are compared to ¹H-{¹⁴N} D-HMQC experiments on γ-glycine and L-histidine.HCl at B₀ = 18.8 T and MAS frequency of 62.5 kHz. The present study shows that (i) the optimal defocusing and refocusing times do not depend on the chosen DANTE scheme, (ii) the DANTE trains must be applied with the highest rf-field compatible with the probe specifications and the stability of the sample, (iii) the excitation bandwidth along the indirect dimension of HMQC sequence using DANTE trains is inversely proportional to their length, (iv) interleaved DANTE trains increase the excitation bandwidth of these sequences, and (v) dephasing under residual ¹H-¹H and ¹H-I dipolar couplings, as well as ¹⁴N second-order quadrupole interaction, during the length of the DANTE scheme attenuate the transfer efficiency.

Simple and Robust Study of Backbone Dynamics of Crystalline Proteins Employing 1H-15N Dipolar Coupling Dispersion

We report a new solid-state multidimensional NMR approach based on the cross-polarization with variable-contact pulse sequence [ Paluch , P. ; Pawlak , T. ; Amoureux , J.-P. ; Potrzebowski , M. J. J. Magn. Reson. 233 , 2013 , 56 ], with ¹H inverse detection and very fast magic angle spinning (ν_R = 60 kHz), dedicated to the measurement of local molecular motions of ¹H-¹⁵N vectors. The introduced three-dimensional experiments, ¹H-¹⁵N-¹H and hCA(N)H, are particularly useful for the study of molecular dynamics of proteins and other complex structures. The applicability and power of this methodology have been revealed by employing as a model sample the GB-1 small protein doped with Na₂CuEDTA. The results clearly prove that the dispersion of ¹H-¹⁵N dipolar coupling constants well correlates with higher order structure of the protein. Our approach complements the conventional studies and offers a fast and reasonably simple method.

14N overtone nuclear magnetic resonance of rotating solids

By irradiating and observing at twice the 14N Larmor frequency, overtone (OT) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is capable of obtaining 14NOT spectra without first-order quadrupolar broadening. Direct excitation and detection of the usually "forbidden" double-quantum transition is mediated by the perturbation from the large quadrupole interaction to the spin states quantized by the Zeeman interaction. A recent study [L. A. O'Dell and C. I. Ratcliffe, Chem. Phys. Lett. 514, 168 (2011)] has shown that 14NOT NMR under magic-angle spinning (MAS) can yield high-resolution spectra with typical second-order quadrupolar line shapes allowing the measurement of 14N chemical shift and quadrupolar coupling parameters. This article has also shown that under MAS the main 14NOT peak is shifted by twice the sample spinning frequency with respect to its static position. We present the theory of 14NOT NMR of static or rotating samples and the physical picture of the intriguing spinning-induced shift in the second case. We use perturbation theory for the case of static samples and Floquet theory for rotating samples. In both cases, the results can be described by a so-called OT parameter that scales down the 14NOT radio-frequency (rf) excitation and signal detection. This OT parameter shows that the components of the rf field, which are transverse and longitudinal with respect to the magnetic field, are both effective for 14NOTrf excitation and signal detection. In the case of MAS at angular frequency ωr , the superposition of the excitation and detection components in the OT parameter makes either the +2ωr or -2ωr term the dominant 14NOT signal, depending on the sense of sample spinning with respect to the magnetic field. This leads to an apparent 14NOT signal shifted at twice the spinning frequency. The features of 14NOT NMR spectra for both static and rotating samples are illustrated with simulations. The spinning induced shift and its dependence on the spinning direction are confirmed experimentally by reversing the spinning direction and the field of the 36 T series-connected hybrid magnet at the US National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

Uniform signal enhancement in MAS NMR of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei using quadruple-frequency sweeps

We introduce two MAS schemes that allow manipulating the satellite-transition (ST) populations of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei, and which both exhibit improved robustness to the quadrupolar coupling constant (C_Q). These schemes, called quadruple frequency sweep (QFS) or quadruple WURST (QWURST) are the sums of two DFS or four WURST to efficiently invert the ST populations of nuclei subject to large or small quadrupole interactions, simultaneously. These quadruple sweeps methods only require 6% more rf-power than the double sweeps ones. We demonstrate, both numerically and experimentally, that the QFS and QWURST schemes benefit from robustness to C_Q and rf amplitude and offset and hence achieve uniform enhancement of the CT signal for ²⁷Al nuclei subject to different quadrupole interactions. Although the version of QFS with repetitive accumulation can achieve higher enhancement in the S/N of the ²⁷Al MAS spectrum, the final sensitivity gains mainly depend on the longitudinal relaxation time of different ²⁷Al sites. We also confirm that these schemes provide an improved acceleration of the ³¹P-{²⁷Al} coherence transfer in PT-J-HMQC experiments.

Recording 13C-15N HMQC 2D sparse spectra in solids in 30 s

We propose a dipolar HMQC Hadamard-encoded (D-HMQC-H_n) experiment for fast 2D correlations of abundant nuclei in solids. The main limitation of the Hadamard methods resides in the length of the encoding pulses, which results from a compromise between the selectivity and the sensitivity due to losses. For this reason, these methods should mainly be used with sparse spectra, and they profit from the increased separation of the resonances at high magnetic fields. In the case of the D-HMQC-H_n experiments, we give a simple rule that allows directly setting the optimum length of the selective pulses, versus the minimum separation of the resonances in the indirect dimension. The demonstration has been performed on a fully ¹³C,¹⁵N labelled f-MLF sample, and it allowed recording the build-up curves of the ¹³C-¹⁵N cross-peaks within 10 min. However, the method could also be used in the case of less sensitive samples, but with more accumulations.

1H-31P CPVC NMR method under Very Fast Magic Angle Spinning for analysis of dipolar interactions and dynamics processes in the crystalline phosphonium tetrafluoroborate salts

We present an NMR methodology which can be used to study the dynamical processes occurring in organophosphorus compounds that belong to the group of the organic ionic plastic crystals (OIPCs). As model samples we employed two phosphonium tetrafluoroborate salts; (t-Bu)₃PH⁺BF₄^- (1) and (Me)₃PH⁺BF₄^- (2). Both samples possess in their structures direct H-P bonds, and both undergo complex thermal processes in the solid state, forming below the melting point three or four phases, respectively. ¹H-³¹P CPVC (Cross-Polarization Variable Contact) measurements were performed under Very Fast Magic Angle Spinning with speed equal to 50 or 60 kHz, in order (i) to establish the hydrogen-phosphorus dipolar couplings, and (ii) to correlate the dipolar splitting values with molecular motions of the cation. Our project is divided into three sections. In the first part we present DSC studies of (1) and (2), to verify whether these samples fulfill the requirements that define them as OIPC. The second part is dedicated to a discussion of the theoretical aspects of ¹H-³¹P CPVC and especially an analysis of the influence of different parameters, e.g. CSA_31P, H-H mismatch, rf-inhomogeneity, dipolar truncation, and the type of dynamics through the motionally averaged <η_D> asymmetry value on the NMR response. The third part shows experimental ¹H-³¹P CPVC data and applicability of these measurements to study H-P distances and dynamics. The complex molecular motion for sample (2), including rotation and diffusion, versus temperature is then postulated on the bases of the changes of H-P dipolar splitting.

Imaging the spatial distribution of radiofrequency field, sample and temperature in MAS NMR rotor

We investigate using nutation experiments the spatial distribution of radiofrequency (rf) field, sample, temperature and cross-polarization transfer efficiency in 1.3 mm rotor. First, two-dimensional (2D) ¹H nutation experiments on silicone thin cylinders in the presence of B₀ field gradient generated by shim coils are used to image the spatial distribution of rf field inside the rotor. These experiments show that the rf field is asymmetrical with respect to the center of the rotor. Moreover, they show the large inhomogeneity that still remains across the sample when using spacers, and that even in this case, the rf-field close to the drive cap is decreased to ca. only 20% of its maximum value. Such 2D nutation experiment in the presence of B₀ field gradient are also employed to demonstrate the migration of adamantane sample from the center of the rotor to its ends during Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS). Furthermore, 2D ¹H nutation experiments on nickelocene exhibiting temperature-dependent isotropic chemical shift provides insights into the temperature distribution inside rotor. Finally three-dimensional (3D) ¹H → ¹³C Cross-Polarization under MAS (CPMAS) nutation experiment indicates that only nuclei subject to the largest rf field contribute to the CPMAS transfer, when using rf field of constant amplitude on both channels. Such high selectivity allows the determination of accurate dipolar coupling constants in the Cross-Polarization with Variable Contact (CP-VC) experiment under fast MAS, at the expense of low sensitivity. Conversely when using ramped-amplitude on the ¹H channel during the CPMAS transfer, nuclei subject to smaller rf field contributes to the transfer, which increases the sensitivity of CPMAS experiment but does not allow an accurate determination of dipolar coupling constants using CP-VC experiment.

Minimizing the t1-noise when using an indirect 1H high-resolution detection of unlabeled samples

The most utilized through-space correlation ¹H-{X} methods with proton indirect detection use two consecutive transfers, ¹H → X and then X → ¹H, with the evolution time t₁ in the middle. When the X isotope is not 100% naturally abundant (NA), only the signal of the protons close to these isotopes is modulated by the ¹H-X dipolar interactions. This signal is theoretically disentangled with phase-cycling from the un-modulated one. However, this separation is never perfect and it may lead to t₁-noise in case of isotopes with very small NA, such as ¹³C or even worse ¹⁵N. One way to reduce this t₁-noise is to minimize, 'purge', during t₁ the un-modulated ¹H magnetization before trying to suppress it with phase-cycling. We analyze experimentally several sequences following the HORROR condition, which allow purging the ¹H transverse magnetization. The comparison is made at three spinning speeds, including very fast ones for ¹H resolution: 27.75, 55.5 and 111 kHz. We show (i) that the efficiency of this purging process increases with the spinning speed, and (ii) that the best recoupling sequences are the two simplest ones: XY and S₁ = SR2¹₂. We then compare the S/N that can be achieved with the two most used ¹H-{X} 2D methods, called D-HMQC and CP-CP. The only difference in between these two methods is that the transfers are done with either two π/2-pulses on X channel (D-HMQC), or two Cross-Polarization (CP) transfers (CP-CP). The first method, D-HMQC, is very robust and should be preferred when indirectly detecting nuclei with high NA. The second method, CP-CP, (i) requires experimental precautions to limit the t₁-noise, and (ii) is difficult to use with quadrupolar nuclei because the two CP transfers are then not efficient nor robust. However, CP-CP is presently the best method to indirectly detect isotopes with small NA, such as ¹³C and ¹⁵N.

High-field 95 Mo and 183 W static and MAS NMR study of polyoxometalates

The potential of high-field NMR to measure solid-state ⁹⁵ Mo and ¹⁸³ W NMR in polyoxometalates (POMs) is explored using some archetypical structures like Lindqvist, Keggin and Dawson as model compounds that are well characterized in solution. NMR spectra in static and under magic angle spinning (MAS) were obtained, and their analysis allowed extraction of the NMR parameters, including chemical shift anisotropy and quadrupolar coupling parameters. Despite the inherent difficulties of measurement in solid state of these low-gamma NMR nuclei, due mainly to the low spectral resolution and poor signal-to-noise ratio, the observed global trends compare well with the solution-state NMR data. This would open an avenue for application of solid-state NMR to POMs, especially when liquid-state NMR is not possible, e.g., for poorly soluble or unstable compounds in solution, and for giant molecules with slow tumbling motion. This is the case of Keplerate where we provide here the first NMR characterization of this class of POMs in the solid state. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

71Ga-77Se connectivities and proximities in gallium selenide crystal and glass probed by solid-state NMR

We introduce two-dimensional (2D) ⁷¹Ga-⁷⁷Se through-bond and through-space correlation experiments. Such correlations are achieved using (i) the J-mediated Refocused Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer (J-RINEPT) method with ⁷¹Ga excitation and ⁷⁷Se Carr-Purcell-Meiboon-Gill (CPMG) detection, as well as (ii) the J- or dipolar-mediated Hetero-nuclear Multiple-Quantum Correlation (J- or D-HMQC) schemes with ⁷¹Ga excitation and quadrupolar CPMG (QCPMG) detection. These methods are applied to the crystalline β-Ga₂Se₃ and the 0.2Ga₂Se₃-0.8GeSe₂ glass. Such glass leads to a homogeneous and reproducible glass-ceramic, which is a good alternative to single-crystalline Ge and polycrystalline ZnSe materials for making lenses transparent in the IR range for thermal imaging applications. We show that 2D ⁷¹Ga-⁷⁷Se correlation experiments allow resolving the ⁷⁷Se signals of molecular units, which are not resolved in the 1D ⁷⁷Se CPMG spectrum. Additionally, the build-up curves of the J-RINEPT and the J-HMQC experiments allow the estimate of the ⁷¹Ga-⁷⁷Se J-couplings via one and three-bonds in the three-dimensional network of β-Ga₂Se₃. Furthermore, these build-up curves show that the one-bond ¹J_71Ga-77Se couplings in the 0.2Ga₂Se₃-0.8GeSe₂ glass are similar to those measured for β-Ga₂Se₃. We also report 2D ⁷¹Ga Satellite Transition Magic-Angle Spinning (STMAS) spectrum of β-Ga₂Se₃ using QCPMG detection at high magnetic field and high Magic-Angle Spinning frequency using large radio frequency field. Such spectrum allows separating the signal of β-Ga₂Se₃ and that of an impurity.

3D correlation NMR spectrum between three distinct heteronuclei for the characterization of inorganic samples: Application on sodium alumino-phosphate materials

We report here an original NMR sequence allowing the acquisition of 3D correlation NMR spectra between three distinct heteronuclei, among which two are half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei. Furthermore, as two of them exhibit close Larmor frequency, this experiment was acquired using a standard triple-resonance probe equipped with a commercial frequency splitter. This NMR technique was tested and applied to sodium alumino-phosphate compounds with ³¹P as the spin-1/2 nucleus and ²³Na and ²⁷Al as the close Larmor frequencies isotopes. To the best of our knowledge, such experiment with direct ³¹P and indirect ²⁷Al and ²³Na detection is the first example of 3D NMR experiment in solids involving three distinct heteronuclei. This sequence has first been demonstrated on a mixture of Al(PO₃)₃ and NaAlP₂O₇ crystalline phases, for which a selective observation of NaAlP₂O₇ is possible through the 3D map edition. This 3D correlation experiment is then applied to characterize mixing and phase segregation in a partially devitrified glass that has been proposed as a material for the sequestration of radioactive waste. The ³¹P-{²³Na,²⁷Al} 3D experiment conducted on the partially devitrified glass material conclusively demonstrates that the amorphous component of the material does not contain aluminum. The as-synthesized material thus presents a poor resistance against water, which is a severe limitation for its application in the radioactive waste encapsulation domain.
