Dental implications in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. A case report

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is an unusual disease entity afflicting many body systems. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction has been described in an isolated number of cases. Ensuing complications should be recognized and the treatment plan modified accordingly. The following is a case report and review of the literature.

Treatment of a central arteriovenous malformation of the mandible with cyanoacrylate: a 4-year follow-up

Large arteriovenous malformations of the jaws are relatively rare, potentially life-threatening lesions. When the lesion is not suspected, extraction of teeth can be fatal. The occurrence and treatment of arteriovenous vascular communications in the head and neck region have traditionally presented most perplexing problems. Traditional treatment has usually involved the obtaining of proximal and distal vascular control and surgical removal of the lesions, when feasible. This article presents a case that is of particular interest because it illustrates the successful use of cyanoacrylate as the only treatment for a large arteriovenous malformation of the left side of the mandible. A 4-year follow-up shows no evidence of the lesion and demonstrates complete regeneration of bone in the same area.

Facial defect augmentation with a dermal-fat graft

The augmentation of facial soft-tissue defects can pose a difficult problem for the surgeon. Bone tends to resorb, giving unpredictable results, and alloplastic materials are firm to the touch and can migrate in the tissues. The dermal-fat graft provides a soft, natural-appearing augmentation. In the case reported here a 2-year follow-up shows excellent results obtained with the use of a dermal-fat graft to augment a soft-tissue defect over the mandible.

Sagittal osteotomy of the mandibular horizontal ramus for correction of apertognathia: report of case

A case of anterior skeletal open bite was successfully treated with a sagittal osteotomy of the mandibular horizontal ramus. Advantages of this technique are good access and ease of surgery, broad medullary contact at osteotomy sites, and elimination of the need for a bone graft. Close cooperation between speech pathologist and surgeon is essential when apertognathia is acquired by tongue-thrust or abnormal oral habits. Removal of causal factors and adequate immobilization will reduce the chance for relapse often seen in open bite surgery.
