Persistence of self-injury, aggression and property destruction in children and adults with tuberous sclerosis complex

BACKGROUND

Individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) are at increased risk of developing self-injurious behaviour. The persistence of this deleterious behaviour over years is reported in aetiologically heterogeneous samples to be between 60% and 80% but is unknown for TSC.

METHOD

In this study, we determined the 3-year persistence of self-injury in a sample (n = 52) of children (with and without ID) and adults (with ID) with TSC and examined characteristics associated with persistence.

RESULTS

Findings for self-injury were contrasted to those for aggression and property destruction to examine the specificity of results to this behaviour. Self-injury was persistent in 84.6% of those with TSC who showed this behaviour, in contrast to 66.7% both for aggression and destruction. Persistent self-injury was associated with poor self-help skills, greater overactivity/impulsivity and more behavioural indicators of pain. These latter two characteristics were also associated with persistent aggression. No characteristics were associated with persistence of property destruction.

CONCLUSION

These findings suggest that self-injurious behaviours in individuals with TSC, together with aggressive and destructive behaviours, are highly persistent and would benefit from targeted intervention. Poor adaptive skills, overactivity/impulsivity and painful health conditions may differentiate those at most risk for persistent self-injury or aggression.

Algorithmic analysis of relational learning processes in instructional technology: Some implications for basic, translational, and applied research

A few noteworthy exceptions notwithstanding, quantitative analyses of relational learning are most often simple descriptive measures of study outcomes. For example, studies of stimulus equivalence have made much progress using measures such as percentage consistent with equivalence relations, discrimination ratio, and response latency. Although procedures may have ad hoc variations, they remain fairly similar across studies. Comparison studies of training variables that lead to different outcomes are few. Yet to be developed are tools designed specifically for dynamic and/or parametric analyses of relational learning processes. This paper will focus on recent studies to develop (1) quality computer-based programmed instruction for supporting relational learning in children with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities and (2) formal algorithms that permit ongoing, dynamic assessment of learner performance and procedure changes to optimize instructional efficacy and efficiency. Because these algorithms have a strong basis in evidence and in theories of stimulus control, they may have utility also for basic and translational research. We present an overview of the research program, details of algorithm features, and summary results that illustrate their possible benefits. It also presents arguments that such algorithm development may encourage parametric research, help in integrating new research findings, and support in-depth quantitative analyses of stimulus control processes in relational learning. Such algorithms may also serve to model control of basic behavioral processes that is important to the design of effective programmed instruction for human learners with and without functional disabilities.

Thin film growth of Fe-based superconductors: from fundamental properties to functional devices. A comparative review

Fe-based superconductors bridge a gap between MgB2 and the cuprate high temperature superconductors as they exhibit multiband character and transition temperatures up to around 55 K. Investigating Fe-based superconductors thus promises answers to fundamental questions concerning the Cooper pairing mechanism, competition between magnetic and superconducting phases, and a wide variety of electronic correlation effects. The question addressed in this review is, however, is this new class of superconductors also a promising candidate for technical applications? Superconducting film-based technologies range from high-current and high-field applications for energy production and storage to sensor development for communication and security issues and have to meet relevant needs of today’s society and that of the future. In this review we will highlight and discuss selected key issues for Fe-based superconducting thin film applications. We initially focus our discussion on the understanding of physical properties and actual problems in film fabrication based on a comparison of different observations made in the last few years. Subsequently we address the potential for technological applications according to the current situation.

Influence of the Precipitation Agent in the Deposition−Precipitation on the Formation and Properties of Au Nanoparticles Supported on Al2O3

Au nanoparticles supported on Al2O3 were prepared by deposition-precipitation of HAuCl4 with different precipitation agents NaOH and urea. The samples were investigated by means of different characterization techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that depending on the precipitation agent, the Au particles have a different Au-Au coordination number and size after calcination at 523 K. Whereas the use of NaOH leads to the formation of Au nanoparticles with a Au-Au coordination number of 6.7 and a mean diameter below 2 nm, those prepared with urea have a mean size of 3.1 nm. The Au-Au coordination number could be determined as 8.6. At the smaller particles obtained with NaOH, hints for Au-O interactions were found. For these particles TEM results advise a rather flat lenticular morphology. Different deposition mechanisms depending on the precipitation agent are discussed as the reason for the formation of nanoparticles with different shapes, sizes, and valence states.
