Effects of aloe vera gel on the induction of endometriosis and regression of endometrial explants in a rat model

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION

To evaluate the preventive and reducing effect of aloe vera gel on surgically-induced endometrial foci in rats.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty-four reproductive aged female non-pregnant, nulligravid Sprague-Dawley albino rats were used. The rats were randomly divided to three groups (Group 1: control, Group 2: aloe vera endometriosis formation, and Group 3: aloe vera endometriosis treatment). A peritoneal lavage using one-ml saline was taken at all the operations for determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and catalase (CAT). Forty-eight horns were implanted in 24 rats.

RESULTS

All the implants were properly formed after implantation. In Group 3, before aloe vera application, the sum of the volumes was 87.2 ± 20.4 mm³ and after treatment the volumes dropped to 28.9 ± 14.9 mm3 (p = 0.01). As evaluation of aloe vera on the formation of endometriosis in the second operation in Group 2, the sum of the volumes was 2.9±1.4 mm³ and in Group 1, 118.9 ± 20.0 mm3 (p = 0.001). Likewise, similar changes were observed in the histopatological scores.

CONCLUSION

The application of aloe vera was seen to raise antioxidant levels in the peritoneal fluid and to reduce oxidative stress markers. Aloe vera is effective in the inhibition of formation and regression of endometriotic lesions.

A randomised controlled study comparing valethamate bromide and placebo in shortening the duration of active labour

The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of valethamate bromide and placebo against placebo in shortening the duration of active labour. A prospective randomised trial of 158 low-risk women in spontaneous labour was conducted. After evaluation of the patients according to exclusion criteria 30 women were given valethamate bromide (Group 1) and 32 women were given placebo (Group 2). Labour duration was the main outcome measure. The duration of the active phase after starting the treatment was similar in the two groups at 225 and 219 min, respectively. However, differences were not significant between the 2 groups. Side effects such as tachycardia, flushing of the face and dryness of mouth were noted with valethamate bromide administration. In conclusion, valethamate bromide did not significantly shortened the duration of active labour in nulliparous women with a singleton pregnancy at term.

Is the Left Kidney the Right One for Kidney Donation in Women Planning on Future Pregnancy?

The kidney transplantation surgery requires left nephrectomy because of the anatomical disadvantages. But hydroureteronephrosis is the most significant renal functional alteration of pregnancy, accounted for by both hormonal and mechanical factors. Dilatation of the ureters and renal pelvis is more prominent on the right side than the left side and is seen in up to 80% of pregnant women. A 23-year-old woman who become pregnant after 4 months from left kidney donation was admitted to our emergency department with acute right kidney injury during her 39(th) week of pregnancy. She did not response to conservative treatment and required emergency delivery because of the progressive increase in her serum creatinine levels. After delivery, progressive decrease at creatinine level had been observed and in one month, it had reached the normal level. Mother candidates should be advised they donate their kidneys after completing their childbearing if possible, or undergo right nephrectomy.

Isolated torsion of fallopian tube complicating pregnancy: case report

OBJECTIVE

Isolated fallopian tube torsion is a very uncommon condition in pregnancy. Most of the cases presented were in the third trimester. Only one case was reported in labor. The authors report the second case of the isolated tubal torsion during labor.

CASE REPORT

A 18-year-old primigravid woman at 37 weeks of gestation was admitted to labor room with painful uterine contraction. Cervix was one-cm dilated and 70% effaced. Her sonographic and laboratory findings were unremarkable. Approximately four hours later the patient reported sudden pain at lower abdomen. The fetal heart rate tracing showed late deceleration. Preoperative diagnosis was considered as ablatio placenta. Isolated torsion of the right fallopian tube was revealed in cesarean delivery. Healthy infant was delivered and right salpingectomy was performed. Postoperative course was uncomplicated.

CONCLUSION

In case of pain unrelated to uterine contraction during labor may be a sign of fallopian tube torsion which is an uncommon condition complicating pregnancy. In such condition, fallopian tube torsion should be kept in mind since early diagnosis may help to preserve the affected tube during labor.
