Is there any correlation between otitis media and dental malocclusion in children? A systematic review

PURPOSE

This study aims to evaluate whether there is a correlation between otitis and dental malocclusions.

METHODS

Electronic databases were searched for observational studies published until July 2021 without language or time restrictions.

CRD42021270760. Observational studies on children with and without OM and/or malocclusion were included. After removing duplicates and excluding not-eligible articles, two reviewers screened relevant articles independently. Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed data quality and validity through the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) quality assessment tool for non-randomized studies.

RESULTS

Five studies met the selection inclusion criteria and were included in the studies for a total of 499 patients. Three studies investigated the relationship between malocclusion and otitis media, while the remaining two studies analyzed the inverse relationship and one of them considered eustachian tube dysfunction as a proxy of OM. An association between malocclusion and otitis media and vice versa emerged, although with relevant limitations.

CONCLUSION

There is some evidence that there is an association between otitis and malocclusion; however, it is not yet possible to establish a definitive correlation.

Efficacy of intradermal hyaluronic acid plus polynucleotides in vulvovaginal atrophy: a pilot study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of vulvovaginal intradermal injections of polynucleotides (PN) combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) in postmenopausal women affected by vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Postmenopausal women affected by VVA were treated with vulvar and vaginal intradermal injections of one prefilled syringe of 2 ml PN/HA every 2 weeks for four sessions. Patients were evaluated at T0 (baseline), T1 (after session 4) and T2 (1 month after session 4). Evaluation of the treatment was assessed by three international validated questionnaires: Vaginal Health Index (VHI), Vulvar Health Index (VuHI) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The Wilcoxon matched-paired signed-rank test was used to compare the differences in VHI, VuHI, FSFI and FSFI domains within the groups. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

RESULTS

Fifty patients were included in the study (mean age 59.9 ± 7.6 years). Overall, the VHI, VuHI and FSFI reported statistically significant differences between baseline and T1 (p < 0.001) and between baseline and T2 (p < 0.001). All FSFI domains registered a statistically significant increase between baseline and T2 (p < 0.001). No complications or side effects were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

Vulvovaginal intradermal injection of PN/HA is a safe, effective treatment, is not expensive and is a reproducible procedure in postmenopausal women with VVA.

Influence of neurorehabilitation on stroke-induced modifications of the quadriceps muscle in elderly subacute stroke patients with paresis

The influence of intensive multifunctional neurorehabilitation on post-stroke changes at the level of the paretic leg quadriceps muscle was examined in elderly subacute stroke patients. We assessed paretic leg muscle mass thickness and muscle fatty infiltration thickness, as well as clinical outcome measures (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, modified Ranking Scale, and Barthel Index) both before and after neurorehabilitation. Improved outcome measures (p ≤ 0.01) and increased muscle mass thickness (p = 0.005) with decreased muscle fatty infiltration thickness (p = 0.005) were observed after neurorehabilitation. No correlations were found between clinical outcome measures and muscle parameters either before or after neurorehabilitation. The findings of this study suggest that neurorehabilitation has a positive influence on global functional recovery and on remodelling of the quadriceps muscle, even in elderly stroke patients, but they do not support the hypothesis that post-stroke muscle changes might have prognostic significance in terms of the severity of neurological deficit and disability, nor do they suggest that these changes can be regarded as a determinant of stroke severity.

Effectiveness of intensive neurorehabilitation in obese subacute stroke patients

The relationship between abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness (aSAT), body fat percentage (BFP), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) and outcome measures of neurological deficit and functional recovery was evaluated in obese subacute stroke patients before and after neurorehabilitation. Decreased National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (p = 0.0001) and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) (p= 0.002) scores, as well as increased Barthel Index (p= 0.0001) scores were detected after neurorehabilitation. Decreased BMI, aSAT, BFP and WHR observed after neurorehabilitation did not penalize the overall functional recovery as shown by correlations between the clinical measure scores and fat mass indices. The correlation observed after neurorehabilitation between BMI and mRS (rho = 0.4526, p < 0.05) suggests that a high BMI may compromise functional recovery. Monitoring of body fat mass indices may provide information aimed at improving the disability of obese stroke patients.
