Genetic variability of hepatitis B virus in Uruguay: D/F, A/F genotype recombinants

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a serious global health problem. Approximately 2 billion people worldwide have been infected, and approximately 350 million individuals currently suffer from HBV-induced chronic liver infection, which causes 600,000 deaths annually from chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV is classified in eight genotypes (A-H), and two more have been proposed (I-J). In this paper, complete genome sequences of nine Uruguayan HBV are reported. Five samples belong to genotype F1b and one to genotype A2. Three HBV recombinants were detected: A1/F1b, A2/F1b and D3/F1b. The following mutations were detected: a G1896A substitution, a 33-nucleotide deletion from position 2896 to 2928 in the Pre-S1 region involving Pre-S1 residues 3-13, a 33-nt deletion in the Pre-S1 region involving nt 2913-2945 and Pre-S1 residues 9-19. More F genotypes strains than expected were detected in this study, supporting the hypothesis that there are more people of indigenous origin than declared in our population. Also, one third of the samples analyzed were recombinants. This cannot be explained by the low HBV prevalence in Uruguay, but a high HBV infection rate in drug addicts and dialysis patients could act in favor of multiple-genotype HBV infections that could lead to recombination.

Pancreatic enzyme secretion in response to test meals differing in the quality of dietary fat (olive and sunflowerseed oils) in human subjects

The aim of the present study was to investigate in human subjects whether or not the ingestion of two liquid meals that differed only in their fatty acid composition (due to the addition of olive oil (group O) or sunflowerseed oil (group S) as the source of dietary fat) would lead to differences in the pancreatic enzyme activities secreted into the duodenum. The experiments were performed in eighteen cholecystectomized subjects who, during the 30 d period immediately before surgery, modified their habitual diets in such a way that their fat composition would reflect, as far as possible, that of the experimental meals. Lipase (EC 3.1.1.3), colipase, amylase (EC 3.2.1.1), chymotrypsin (EC 3.4.21.1) and trypsin (EC 3.4.21.4) activities were measured in duodenal contents aspirated before and after the ingestion of the test meals. The plasma levels of secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK) were also examined. Duodenal enzyme activities were similar in resting conditions. No significant differences were revealed in postprandial enzyme activities, except for lipase activity, which was higher in group O, probably in relation to the greater plasma CCK concentrations observed in this group. In the absence of enzyme output data, we should not exclude the possibility that the type of dietary fat will affect human pancreatic enzyme secretion to a greater extent than is evident from the present study, for instance through a flow-mediated effect, as we previously observed in dogs.

Mapping techniques for document processing

An information retrieval system should provide references to the set of documents the user must evaluate in order to satisfy his/her information requirements. A major concern in this evaluation process is whether or not a document meets the user's needs. In many document retrieval systems there is no relevant information regarding the content of the documents. This makes it very difficult to evaluate if a document is relevant to the user's initial query. This suggests the need for a method to compare the documents on a word by word basis. Fully automated methods are too complex and difficult to generalize upon. A semiautomated user driven method for document mapping is described in this paper. It should decrease the amount of time required to validate the information content of a query.
