A Rare Case of Pregnancy After Surgical Treatment for Stage III Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory skin condition primarily affecting areas with apocrine glands. It commonly manifests as painful nodules, abscesses, and sinus tracts, significantly impacting the patient's well-being. In this report, we discuss a case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman with Hurley stage III hidradenitis suppurativa who had undergone surgical reconstruction of the vulva before conception. The patient underwent a cesarian section and received topical treatment for her lesions near the genitalia. The importance of early identification, a collaborative approach involving multiple specialists, and individualized treatment strategies for managing this debilitating condition during pregnancy are emphasized in this case study.

Non-Obstetric Traumatic Vulvar Hematoma Managed in a Low-Resource Setting: A Case Report of a Rare Condition

Most cases of vulvar hematomas are caused by either genital tract injury during childbirth or trauma. Although uncommon, instances of spontaneous vulvar hematomas occurring without trauma or unusual sexual practices have been reported. In this report, we present the case of a 24-year-old woman who experienced an injury after a fall, resulting in a rapidly enlarging vulvar hematoma. Due to the worsening pain and swelling, surgical intervention was undertaken for her management.

An Eight-Year-Old Child With Sneddon Syndrome: A Rare Case Report

We present a rare case of slow-progressing neurocutaneous vasculopathy described as Sneddon syndrome. A child presented with global developmental delay, congenital livedo racemosa, unilateral vision loss, and a past history of focal neurological deficit. Our main objective is to make physicians aware of this nature of presentation in children.

Extensive Nevus Comedonicus, Complicated with Recurrent Abscesses, Successfully Treated with Surgical Resurfacing

Nevus comedonicus is a rare epidermal abnormality of the pilosebaceous unit, which is congenital in most patients but may also appear early in childhood. It may be localized or have an extensive involvement, the latter showing a unilateral predominance with only a few cases presenting bilaterally. Extensive nevus comedonicus can be associated with musculoskeletal defects, eye and neurological involvement, which constitutes nevus comedonicus syndrome. Uncomplicated nevus comedonicus can be treated with topical keratolytics, diode, erbium laser, and ultrapulse CO₂ laser. Surgical excision can be performed to ensure complete removal and nonrecurrence. This case report refers to a young male patient with extensive nevus comedonicus present over left chest, left axilla, and left upper back without systemic involvement, treated with staged surgical excision and resurfacing.

Complications of hair restoration surgery: a retrospective analysis

Background:

Hair restoration surgery (HRS) is a very promising and sought after aesthetic procedure with very few complications. Complications may occur in the donor or the recipient area, and it may be due to surgical or idiopathic causes.

Aim:

The aim was to analyze the complications in male patients who underwent HRS for androgenetic alopecia (AGA).

Materials and Methods:

We conducted a retrospective analysis of male patients who underwent HRS for AGA from December 2010 to August 2014. Data were collected from the registers, telephonic enquiry and electronic mails. All complications during and after surgery, and their subjective feeling about hair growth was recorded.

Results:

Seventy-three patients were included in the analysis. A total of 65 patients had undergone follicular unit transplant, 7 patients underwent FUE, and one patient had body hair transplantation. Postoperative edema was found in 42.47% of patients, followed by sterile folliculitis in 23.29% of patients, wide donor scar in 15.07% of patients, bacterial folliculitis and numbness/paresthesia in 10.96% of patients. Other complications such as raised scar, hiccups, pruritus, excessive bleeding were found in isolated cases.

Conclusion:

Thorough preoperative evaluation, skillful surgical techniques, good communication and postoperative follow-up go a long way in giving satisfactory outcome with fewer complications in HRS.

Inhibition of gastric H(+),K(+)-ATPase and Helicobacter pylori growth by phenolic antioxidants of Curcuma amada

Gastric ulcer is the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorder, resulting from oxidative stress, Helicobacter pylori infection, up-regulation of proton potassium ATPase (PPA) activity, down-regulation of gastric mucosal defense, etc. In this paper it is reported that phenolic fractions of Curcuma amada, commonly known as mango ginger, acted as potent inhibitors of PPA and H. pylori growth. Mango ginger free phenolics (MGFP) and mango ginger bound phenolics (MGBP) inhibited PPA at IC50 values of 2.2 +/- 0.21 and 0.7 +/- 0.08 microg/mL, respectively, exhibiting 9-27-fold better potency over lansoprazole (IC(50) of 19.3 +/- 2.2 microg/mL). MGFP is constituted by caffeic (26%), gentisic (24%), ferulic (20%), gallic (10%), cinnamic (7%), and protocatechuic acids (7%) and MGBP by ferulic (47%), cinnamic (29%), p-coumaric acid (11%), and syringic (5%) acids as major phenolic acids. MGFP and MGBP further exhibited free radical scavenging (IC(50) of 2.2 +/- 0.17 and 4.2 +/- 0.36 microg/mL), reducing power abilities (193-104 units/g), inhibition of lipid peroxidation (IC(50) of 10.3 +/- 0.91 and 15.6 +/- 1.6 microg/mL), and DNA protection (80% at 4 microg), indicating strong antioxidative properties. MGFP and MGBP thus may be potential and inexpensive multistep blockers against ulcers.
