Abstract
Dental implantology is one of the most dynamically developing fields of dentistry, which, despite developing clinical knowledge and new technologies, is still associated with many complications that may lead to the loss of the implant or the development of the disease, including peri-implantitis. One of the reasons for this condition may be the fact that dental implants cannot yield a proper osseointegration process due to the development of oral microbiota dysbiosis and the accompanying inflammation caused by immunological imbalance. This study aims to present current knowledge as to the impact of oral microflora dysbiosis and deregulation of the immune system on the course of failures observed in dental implantology. Evidence points to a strong correlation between these biological disturbances and implant complications, often stemming from improper osseointegration, pathogenic biofilms on implants, as well as an exacerbated inflammatory response. Technological enhancements in implant design may mitigate pathogen colonization and inflammation, underscoring implant success rates.

Abstract
COVID-19 is a complex multisystemic disease that can result in long-term complications and, in severe cases, death. This study investigated the effect of COVID-19 on carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) as a measurement to evaluate its impact on arterial stiffness and might help predict COVID-19-related cardiovascular (CV) complications. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for relevant studies, and meta-analysis was performed. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (nr. CRD42023434326). The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Scale was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. Nine studies reported cfPWV among COVID-19 patients and control groups. The pooled analysis showed that cfPWV in COVID-19 patients was 9.5 ± 3.7, compared to 8.2 ± 2.2 in control groups (MD = 1.32; 95% CI: 0.38-2.26; p = 0.006). A strong association between COVID-19 infection and increased cfPWV suggests a potential link between the virus and increased arterial stiffness. A marked increase in arterial stiffness, a known indicator of CV risk, clearly illustrates the cardiovascular implications of COVID-19 infection. However, further research is required to provide a clearer understanding of the connection between COVID-19 infection, arterial compliance, and subsequent CV events.

Abstract
Tobacco smoking is one of the most serious health problems. Potentially lethal effects of nicotine for adults can occur with as little as 30 to 60 mg, although severe symptoms can arise with lower doses. Furthermore, the route of administration also influences the toxicity. Cytisine is one of the most popular medications in nicotinism treatment. Like nicotine, cytisine is a plant alkaloid, signaling through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Our study evaluated the effects of cytisine in nicotine-induced embryotoxic effects using zebrafish larvae. We examined the teratogenicity of nicotine and cytisine alone or in combination. Nicotine increased mortality and delayed hatching of zebrafish larvae in a dose-dependent manner. Cytisine did not affect mortality in a wide range of concentrations, and hatching delay was observed only at the highest concentrations, above 2 mM. Administering compounds together partially reduced the adverse teratogenic effect induced by nicotine alone. The protective effect of cytisine against the nicotine effect, observed in zebrafish, will contribute to future studies or treatments related to nicotine addiction or prenatal nicotine exposure in humans.

Abstract
Vitamin D can modulate immune responses, and its deficiency is linked to increased autoimmunity and susceptibility to infection. In the general population, it has been observed that serum vitamin D levels are connected with the risk of COVID-19 and its severity. Our study aims to examine reported findings on the effect of vitamin D serum levels on infection of COVID-19 during pregnancy. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant studies. Serum vitamin D serum levels in COVID-19-positive and COVID-19-negative pregnant women were 24.61 ± 20.86 ng/mL and 24.12 ± 17.33 ng/mL, respectively. In mild vs. moderate to critical COVID-19 pregnant women, vitamin D serum levels were 16.71 ± 9.04 ng/mL vs. 10.7 ± 9.37 ng/mL and severe vs. non-severe were 13.21 ± 11.47 ng/mL vs. 15.76 ± 10.0 ng/mL. Only one study reported vitamin D serum levels in the placenta of COVID-19-positive pregnant women compared with the control and results varied and amounted to 14.06 ± 0.51 ng/mL vs. 12.45 ± 0.58 ng/mL, respectively. Vitamin D deficiency tends to be common in pregnant women who have COVID-19, and the level of this vitamin has been demonstrated to have a strong correlation with the severity of the illness. As vitamin D serum levels correlate with COVID-19 symptoms and even with its occurrence, appropriate vitamin D supplementation in the prenatal period is suggested.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a global pandemic, required the donning of personal protective equipment during clinical contact, and continues to be a significant worldwide public health concern. Pediatric cardiac arrest is a rare but critical condition with a high mortality rate, the outcomes of which may be negatively affected by donning personal protective equipment. The aim of this study is to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric cardiac arrest outcomes. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis in the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library from their inception to 1 October 2022. We included studies published in English on pediatric patients with cardiac arrest, dichotomized by the pre- and during-COVID-19 periods and then stratified by COVID-19 positive or negative status, to evaluate clinical outcomes associated with cardiac arrest. Six studies were included in the meta-analysis. In witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients, there were no differences between the pandemic and pre-pandemic periods for witnessed cardiac arrest (28.5% vs. 28.7%; odds ratio (OR) = 0.99; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.87 to 1.14; p = 0.93), administration of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (61.5 vs. 63.6%; OR = 1.11; 95%CI: 0.98 to 1.26; p = 0.11), bystander automated external defibrillator use (both 2.8%; OR = 1.00; 95%CI: 0.69 to 1.45; p = 0.99), return of spontaneous circulation(8.4 vs. 8.9%; OR = 0.93; 95%CI: 0.47 to 1.88; p = 0.85), survival to hospital admission (9.0 vs. 10.2%, OR = 0.81; 95%CI: 0.45 to 1.44; p = 0.47), or survival to hospital discharge (13.4 vs. 12.4%; OR = 0.62; 95%CI: 0.22 to 1.72; p = 0.35). COVID-19 did not change pediatric cardiac arrest bystander interventions or outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND About 87% of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients (mostly oropharyngeal cancer-OPC) are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV). Recent studies have demonstrated a significant correlation between HPV infection and nutritional disorders in HNC patients. Therefore, we formed a hypothesis that nutritional disorders or their severity in HNC patients may be associated with the occurrence of HPV infection due to known molecular differences in involved tissue. This literature review aimed to evaluate the influence of HPV infection on the occurrence and severity of nutritional disorders in HNC patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PubMed database was used to search papers with the keywords "HPV", "HNC", and "nutritional disorders" in different variants and combinations. CONCLUSIONS The data available in the discussed papers indicate, among other things, that HPV-positive patients may be at higher risk of malnutrition, critical weight loss, and necessity for gastrostomy after radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy (C-RT). It should be highlighted that despite some studies demonstrating positive results, currently available data regarding the influence of HPV infection on the occurrence and severity of nutritional disorders in HNC remain limited and inconclusive, and thus further research on this issue is warranted.

Abstract
Background: Malnutrition is a nutritional disorder observed in 52% of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Malnutrition is frequently related to the increased level of proinflammatory cytokines. In turn, ongoing inflammation is associated with increased catabolism of skeletal muscle and lipolysis. Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays a pivotal role in the development of malnutrition and cachexia in cancer patients. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between a functional single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) −610 T > G (rs4149570) of the TNFRSF1A gene and the occurrence of nutritional disorders in patients subjected to RT due to HNC. Methods: The study group consisted of 77 patients with HNC treated at the Oncology Department of the Medical University in Lublin. Genotyping of the TNFRSF1A gene was performed using capillary electrophoresis (Genetic Analyzer 3500). Results: Multivariable analysis revealed that the TT genotype of the TNFRSF1A gene (−610 T > G) was an independent predictor of severe malnutrition (odds ratio—OR = 5.05; p = 0.0350). Moreover, the TT genotype of this gene was independently related to a higher risk of critical weight loss (CWL) (OR = 24.85; p = 0.0009). Conclusions: SNP (−610 T > G) of the TNFRSF1A may be a useful marker in the assessment of the risk of nutritional deficiencies in HNC patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).

Abstract
BACKGROUND This meta-analysis outlines the role of elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in assessing the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS The current study was designed as a systematic review and meta-analysis. Embase, Pub- Med, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched to identify the usefulness of LDH as a marker of COVID-19 severity. All extracted data were analyzed using RevMan V.5.4 or STATA V.14 software. RESULTS A total of 264 records were selected for this meta-analysis. Pooled analysis showed that LDH levels were statistically significantly lower in the group of survivors compared to patients who died in hospital (standardized mean differences [SMD] = -3.10; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -3.40 to -2.79; I2 = 99%; p < 0.001). Lower LDH levels were observed in non-severe groups compared to severe course of COVID-19 (SMD = -2.38; 95% CI: -2.61 to -2.14; I2 = 99%; p < 0.001). The level of LDH was statistically significantly lower in the severe group compared to the critical group (SMD = -1.48; 95% CI: -2.04 to -0.92; I2 = 98%; p < 0.001). Patients who did not require treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) showed significantly lower levels of LDH compared to patients who required treatment in the ICU (SMD = -3.78; 95% CI: -4.48 to -3.08; I2 = 100%; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis showed that elevated LDH was associated with a poor outcome in COVID-19.

Abstract
The μ-opioid receptors belong to the family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and their activation triggers a cascade of intracellular relays with the final effect of analgesia. Classical agonists of this receptor, such as morphine, are the main targets in the treatment of both acute and chronic pain. However, the dangerous side effects, such as respiratory depression or addiction, significantly limit their widespread use. The allosteric centers of the receptors exhibit large structural diversity within particular types and even subtypes. Currently, a considerable interest is aroused by the modulation of μ-opioid receptors. The application of such a technique may result in a reduction in the dose or even discontinuation of classical opiates, thus eliminating the side effects typical of this class of drugs. Our aim is to obtain a series of 1-aryl-5,6(1H)dioxo-2,3-dihydroimidazo[1,2-a]imidazole derivatives and provide more information about their activity and selectivity on OP3 (MOP, human mu opioid receptor). The study was based on an observation that some carbonyl derivatives of 1-aryl-2-aminoimidazoline cooperate strongly with morphine or DAMGO in sub-threshold doses, producing similar results to those of normal active doses. To elucidate the possible mechanism of such enhancement, we performed a few in vitro functional tests (involving cAMP and β-arrestin recruitment) and a radioligand binding assay on CHO-K1 cells with the expression of the OP3 receptor. One of the compounds had no orthosteric affinity or intrinsic activity, but inhibited the efficiency of DAMGO. These results allow to conclude that this compound is a negative allosteric modulator (NAM) of the human μ-opioid receptor.

Abstract
Background: Muscle atrophy is a complex catabolic condition developing under different inflammatory-related systemic diseases resulting in wasting of muscle tissue. While the knowledge of the molecular background of muscle atrophy has developed in recent years, how the atrophic conditions affect the long non-coding RNA (lncRNAs) machinery and the exact participation of the latter in the mediation of muscle loss are still unknown. The purpose of the study was to assess how inflammatory condition developing under the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) treatment affects the lncRNAs’ expression in a mouse skeletal muscle cell line. Materials and method: A C2C12 mouse myoblast cell line was treated with TNF-α to develop atrophy, and inflammatory-related lncRNAs mediating muscle loss were identified. Bioinformatics was used to validate and analyze the discovered lncRNAs. The differences in their expression under different TNF-α concentrations and treatment times were investigated. Results: Five lncRNAs were identified in a discovery set as atrophy related and then validated. Three lncRNAs, Gm4117, Ccdc41os1, and 5830418P13Rik, were selected as being significant for inflammatory-related myotube atrophy. Dynamics changes in the expression of lncRNAs depended on both TNF-α concentration and treatment time. Bioinformatics analysis revealed the mRNA and miRNA target for selected lncRNAs and their putative involvement in the molecular processes related to muscle atrophy. Conclusions: The inflammatory condition developing in the myotube under the TNF-α treatment affects the alteration of lncRNAs’ expression pattern. Experimental and bioinformatics testing suggested the prospective role of lncRNAs in the mediation of muscle loss under an inflammatory state.

Abstract
High-grade pediatric glioma (p-HGG—WHO 2021, formerly GBM—WHO 2016), as a common, aggressive, and highly lethal primary brain malignancy in adults, accounts for only 3–15% of primary brain tumors in pediatric patients. After leukemia, brain malignancies are the second most common in the pediatric population and first in incidences concerning solid tumors. This study was designed on the basis of 14 pediatric patients hospitalized at Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw, Poland, due to p-HGG treatment. All the patients had a histopathological diagnosis performed by an experienced neuropathologist according to WHO guidelines (WHO 2016 Grade IV Glioblastoma). A significant correlation was found between the miR-155 concentration and the level of PD-L1 expression in p-HGG tumor tissue. Very few reports have indicated PD-L1 expression in pediatric patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Currently, there is a lack of studies combining the relationship between depression, chronic heart failure (CHF) and CRP polymorphisms (SNPs). The objective of the study was the investigation of the potential influence of rs2794521 in CRP on the survival and clinical profile of patients suffering from both depression and CHF. PATIENTS AND METHODS 103 CHF individuals were studied to evaluate depression occurrence and to compare values of cardiac, laboratory and nutritional parameters depending on CRP genotypes. RESULTS The higher frequency of CC genotype was found in depressive patients (p=0.021). Serum CRP concentration was significantly higher in depressed patients than in non-depressed ones (p=0.032). CC depressive individuals demonstrated greater frequency of NYHA grade III-IV (p<0.001) and higher level of circulating CRP (p=0.001) and TNF-α (p=0.042) compared with CT or TT carriers. CC individuals were more frequently classified as moderately or severely malnourished according to SGA (p=0.014). CC genotype was associated with a higher risk of early death during the 72 months of the follow-up (HR=4.01; p=0.006 for CC vs. CT vs. TT and HR=4.46; p<0.001 for CC vs. CT+TT). CONCLUSIONS CC genotype of CRP more frequently occurs in depressive CHF patients, and it is associated with worse clinical outcomes and disease prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the most common metabolic complications of pregnancy are carbohydrate metabolism disorders resulting in hyperglycemia. The aim of the study was the assessment of impact of socio-demographic variables on the levels of social support and self-efficacy and an investigation of whether there is and how the relationship between social support and self-efficacy is shaped in pregnant women with gestational diabetes. In this study 339 pregnant women with diabetes during pregnancy and 337 healthy pregnant women took part. METHODS The Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS), the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and a standardized interview questionnaire were used. RESULTS The respondents rated Perceived Instrumental Support higher (M = 3.52) than Perceived Emotional Support (M = 3.39). In contrast, Actually Received Support (M = 3.53) was rated higher compared to Support Seeking (M = 2.99) and Need for Support (M = 2.95). The mean generalized self-efficacy score was M = 31.58 in women with diabetes during pregnancy and M = 31.85 in healthy pregnant women. CONCLUSIONS The research results obtained prove the existence of a relationship between GSES and BSSS scores. In pregnant women with diabetes and healthy pregnant women, GSES increases with an increase in perceived support. Additionally, among pregnant women with diabetes, the level of GSES increases with an increase in actually received support. However, in the case of healthy pregnant women, a lower level of need for support is associated with higher level of generalized self-efficacy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To date, there are no literature reports combining the relationship between depression and chronic heart failure (CHF) in relations to selective nutritional, cardiac and laboratory parameters. The aim of this study was to correlate the rs1799964 genotypes in TNF-α with clinical outcomes of depressive CHF patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS 94 CHF patients were enrolled to assess depression prevalence and to compare values of cardiac, laboratory and nutritional parameters between depressed and non-depressed patients with different rs1799964 genotypes. RESULTS Depression was diagnosed in 66 individuals (70.2%). We noted significant reduction of EF% in CC genotype carriers compared to other patients (mean EF%: 36±11 CC vs. 44±14 CT and 46±7 TT; p=0.023) and worse outcomes in NYHA examination (p=0.033). We noticed a significant increase in serum CRP and TNF-α in CC patients (p=0.003 and p<0.001). Compared with T allele carriers, the CHF patients bearing CC genotype were more frequently diagnosed as cachectic (cachexia incidence for CC - 80% vs. 28% for CT and 38.7% for TT; p=0.017). CC genotype of rs1799964 was found as unfavorable factor affecting survival of depressive CHF patients (HR=8.87; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The presence of the CC genotype in patients with depression and CHF can be considered an unfavorable prognostic factor related to the risk of shortening the life expectancy and deteriorating its quality, which is reflected in the severity of inflammation.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent, inflammatory condition that is defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Despite the progress in research into the mechanisms leading to the development of endometriosis, its cause has not yet been established. It seems to be possible that the formation of oxidative stress may be one of the main causes of the development of endometriosis. There is much research that studies the potential role of trace elements in the appearance of endometrial-like lesions. Most studies focus on assessing the content of selected trace elements in the blood, urine, or peritoneal fluid in women with endometriosis. Meanwhile, little is known about the content of these elements in endometrial-like implants, which may be helpful in developing the theory of endometriosis. Investigations that are more comprehensive are needed to confirm a hypothesis that some trace elements play a role in the pathomechanism of endometriosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Until now, there are lack of established clinical factors allowing management of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients being at risk of cardiac cachexia (CC). The changes in soluble protein ST2 (sST2) concentrations suggest a valuable and prognostic usefulness of this biomarker in monitoring patients with CHF, especially those who potentially are prompt to develop CC. The aim of this study was to assess the potential role of sST2 in male patients with CHF under cachexia condition. METHODS AND RESULT 91 male patients were selected to the study group and underwent meticulous screening according to recent clinical guidelines in order to CHF and CC detection. Additionally all patients underwent assessment of body composition and sST2 testing. Patients were followed-up for 60 months. Plasma sST2 concentration was significantly increased in cachectic compared with non-cachectic patients (median: 27.40 ng/mL and 20.62 ng/mL; p < 0.001), however, in this group the EF% was reduced (mean: 34 ± 13.5% and 41 ± 14.5%; p = 0.029). Correlations between sST2 and CRP (R = 0.524; p < 0.001) and phase angle (PA) (R = -0.513; p < 0.001) were observed. CHF patients in whose the PA value ranged in Q1 (<3.06°) and sST2 concentration ranged in Q3 (>33.15 ng/mL) had higher risk of death (HR = 9.62 and 8.60, respectively). The death rate was the highest in cachectic group with the simultaneous presence of sST2-Q3 and PA-Q1 (87.5% of this group). They had almost 7-fold higher risk of death during follow-up period (HR = 6.89, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS sST2 demonstrates potential utility in male patients with CHF under cachexia condition in prediction death rate.

Abstract
Examining individuals with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) provides a rare opportunity to understand how changes in mitochondrial DNA and loss of vision can be related to changes in organization of the whole-brain structural network architecture. In comparison with the previous neuroimaging studies with LHON participants, which were focused mainly on analyzing changes which occur in different areas of the patient's brain, network analysis not only makes it possible to observe single white matter fibers' aberrations but also the whole-brain nature of these changes. The purpose of our study was to better understand whole-brain neural network changes in LHON participants and see the correlation between the clinical data and the changes. To achieve this, we examined fifteen LHON patients and seventeen age-matched healthy subjects with the usage of ultra-high filed 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Basing on the analysis on MRI diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data, whole-brain structural neural networks were reconstructed with the use of the minimum spanning tree algorithm (MST) for every participant. Our results revealed that the structural network in LHON participants was altered at both the local and the global level. The global network structures of LHON subjects were less centralized with path-like organization and there was an imbalance in the main hub centrality. Moreover, the inspection of nodes and hubs in terms of their anatomical placement revealed that in the LHON participants the prominent hubs were located within the basal ganglia (i.e. bilateral caudate, left pallidum), which differed them from healthy controls. An analysis of the relationships between the global MST metrics and LHON participants' clinical characteristics revealed significant correlations between the global network metrics and the duration of illness. Furthermore, the nodal parameters of the optic chiasm were significantly correlated with the duration of illness and the averaged thickness of the right retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). These findings clearly showed that the progression of the disease is accompanied by alterations within the brain network structure and its efficiency.
