A giant exoplanet orbiting a very-low-mass star challenges planet formation models

Surveys have shown that super-Earth and Neptune-mass exoplanets are more frequent than gas giants around low-mass stars, as predicted by the core accretion theory of planet formation. We report the discovery of a giant planet around the very-low-mass star GJ 3512, as determined by optical and near-infrared radial-velocity observations. The planet has a minimum mass of 0.46 Jupiter masses, very high for such a small host star, and an eccentric 204-day orbit. Dynamical models show that the high eccentricity is most likely due to planet-planet interactions. We use simulations to demonstrate that the GJ 3512 planetary system challenges generally accepted formation theories, and that it puts constraints on the planet accretion and migration rates. Disk instabilities may be more efficient in forming planets than previously thought.

Orai1 and Stim1 regulate normal and hypertrophic growth in cardiomyocytes

Cardiac hypertrophy is an independent risk for heart failure (HF) and sudden death. Deciphering signalling pathways dependent on extracellular calcium (Ca(2+)) influx that control normal and pathological cardiac growth may enable identification of novel therapeutic targets. The objective of the present study is to determine the role of the Ca(2+) release-activated Ca(2+) (CRAC) channel Orai1 and stromal interaction molecule 1 (Stim1) in postnatal cardiomyocyte store operated Ca(2+) entry (SOCE) and impact on normal and hypertrophic postnatal cardiomyocyte growth. Employing a combination of siRNA-mediated gene silencing, cultured neonatal rat ventricular cardiomyocytes together with indirect immunofluorescence, epifluorescent Ca(2+) imaging and site-specific protein phosphorylation and real-time mRNA expression analysis, we show for the first time that both Orai1 and Stim1 are present in cardiomyocytes and required for SOCE due to intracellular Ca(2+) store depletion by thapsigargin. Stim1-KD but not Orai1-KD significantly decreased diastolic Ca(2+) levels and caffeine-releasable Ca(2+) from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Conversely, Orai1-KD but not Stim1-KD significantly diminished basal NRCM cell size, anp and bnp mRNA levels and activity of the calcineurin (CnA) signalling pathway although diminishing both Orai1 and Stim1 proteins similarly attenuated calmodulin kinase II (CamKII) and ERK1/2 activity under basal conditions. Both Orai1- and Stim1-KD completely abrogated phenylephrine (PE) mediated hypertrophic NRCM growth and enhanced natriuretic factor expression by inhibiting G(q)-protein conveyed activation of the CamKII and ERK1/2 signalling pathway. Interestingly, only Orai1-KD but not Stim1-KD prevented Gq-mediated CaN-dependent prohypertrophic signalling. This study shows for the first time that both Orai1 and Stim1 have a key role in cardiomyocyte SOCE regulating both normal and hypertrophic postnatal cardiac growth in vitro.

Ten years experience with a conservative approach to radial keratotomy

This retrospective study reports the results of radial keratotomy surgery on 225 eyes of 135 patients by one surgeon. Fifty-one percent of the eyes had four incisions and 45% had eight as the initial procedure. Fifteen percent of the eyes repeated surgery. The mean preoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -5.10 diopters (SD 1.90, range 1.20 to 11.60 D) and at 3 months to 1 year, the mean was -0.60 D (SD 1.00, range -4.80 to +3.40 D). For the entire series, 69% of the eyes achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better, 73% were corrected to within +/- 1.00 D of emmetropia, and 3% were overcorrected by more than +1.00 D. For eyes with low preoperative myopia (-3.00 D and less), 100% achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better, 97% were corrected to within +/- 1.00 D of emmetropia, and 3% were overcorrected by more than +1.00 D. For eyes with moderate myopia (-3.1 to -5.9 D), 73% achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better, 81% were corrected to within +/- 1.00 D of emmetropia, and 3% were overcorrected by more than +1.00 D. For eyes with higher preoperative myopia (-6.0 to -11.60 D), 47% achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better, 45% were corrected to within +/- 1.00 D of emmetropia and 3% were overcorrected by more than +1.00 D. One hundred eyes with a follow-up of 2 years or greater were studied for stability; 77% changed by less than 1.00 D from the 1 year value; 17% changed by 1.00 D or more in the hyperopic direction; 6% changed by 1.00 D or more in the myopic direction. There were no vision threatening complications and only one eye had a postoperative best spectacle corrected visual acuity of less than 20/40.

[The effect of auditory feedback on the perception of verbal behavior in dynamic group psychotherapy]

A controlled experiment under genuine therapy conditions demonstrates that auditive group feedback once a week had the effect of improving the effectivity of the therapy. The individual's experience of his own speech behavior was dependent on the phase of therapy. In general, members of the group adopted a more critical attitude to themselves after listening to the recording. The possibility of generalizing from these results is considered.
