Analysing environmental opinion using highly customisable visualisation tools to understand citizens' attitudes and barriers

Knowledge of public opinion is key to understanding citizens' attitudes towards environmental policies. However, large polls and surveys generate complex datasets from which it is not always easy to draw conclusions. In addition, tailor-made solutions for analysing public opinion face the challenge of handling too many layers of information, which can easily lead to an overwhelming user experience and impair decision-making. Service design methodologies can support the design of ad hoc visualisation tools focused on user needs. We present Op-e-nion, a case study of a visualisation tool for the analysis of public opinion regarding environmental issues, aimed at administrations and public institutions. The involvement of experts from different fields allowed for the identification of the main metrics necessary to target the least engaged socio-demographic groups as well as the barriers that limited their environmental actions. Experts also highlighted useful aspects of the design process and the final prototype to help them define more effective campaigns and policies to address social challenges and promote citizen action. An innovative step was introduced in the methodology by involving non-state actors in the evaluation of the tool, ensuring problem detection and enhancing the sustainability of the final product. Important aspects for the visualisation of multi-categorical data included simplifying the interaction with the tool while prioritising relevant information, and using highly customizable visualisations to answer specific user requirements and changing needs (i.e. analytical vs. managerial tasks). Improved visualisations of public opinion data will, in turn, better support the development of policies shaped by citizens' concerns.

Since its origins, the discipline of information visualization has always walked hand in hand with related technological advances and their evolution. Today, there is a wide variety of software tools and technologies, some using code and some commercial, that allow users to effectively visualize and analyze data. Artificial intelligence and machine learning may also revolutionize the way information is visualized, allowing users to explore, in a more comfortable and efficient way, patterns and trends in large datasets. Resumen Desde sus orígenes, la disciplina de la visualización de información ha caminado siempre de la mano de los avances tecnológicos relacionados y su evolución. Hoy en día, existe una amplia variedad de herramientas de software y tecnologías, algunas de código y otras comerciales, que permiten a los usuarios visualizar y analizar datos de manera efectiva. La inteligencia artificial y el aprendizaje automático parece que también pueden revolucionar la forma en la que se visualiza la información, permitiendo a los usuarios explorar patrones y tendencias en grandes conjuntos de datos de manera más cómoda y eficiente.

Tendencias en la disciplina de la Visualización de Información

Evolution overview of the discipline of information visualization during 2021. We select, on the one hand, various proposals that incorporate innovations regarding visual concepts and resources, and on the other, some examples of visualizations that have attracted attention, not so much for their visual contributions but for the set of data and content they have represented. Finally, to complete this vision of the evolution of this discipline over one year, we address some advances related to the technological development in the field of information visualization. Resumen Panorámica sobre la evolución de la disciplina de la visualización de la información durante 2021. Por un lado, se presentan propuestas que han destacado por incorporar innovaciones respecto a los conceptos y recursos visuales. Por otro, se recogen algunos ejemplos de visualizaciones que han llamado la atención, no tanto por sus aportaciones visuales, sino por el conjunto de datos y contenidos que han representado. Por último, para completar esa visión de la evolución anual de la disciplina, se analizan algunos avances relacionados con el desarrollo tecnológico que se ha producido en el campo de la visualización de información.

Curación de contenidos en periodismo. Indicadores y buenas prácticas

El artículo presenta un método o sistema para el análisis y la evaluación de la curación de contenidos en medios de comunicación digitales. Este sistema se basa en dos dimensiones (Curación y Contenido) que agrupan una serie de parámetros e indicadores a los cuales se les ha asignado una puntuación. Para cada parámetro se señalan los siguientes elementos: definición, explicación, procedimiento y ejemplos. El elemento “procedimiento” se defiende como una metodología para valorar el uso de la curación de contenidos en un sitio web periodístico, lo que incluye una relación de indicadores, y para cada uno de ellos una pregunta de análisis y una puntuación. El elemento “ejemplos” presenta un conjunto de buenas prácticas de curación de contenidos por parte de medios de comunicación digitales.

Comunicación visual de una emergencia sanitaria mundial: el caso de la Covid-19

In the pandemic generated by the coronavirus, governments and the media were suddenly faced with the difficult challenge of communicating about this issue with the population and transferring technical concepts and large volumes of data to the general public. It was necessary to find a way to make this unfamiliar content accessible to everyone, using known and assimilable formulas. In this context, the strategy chosen to make this communication more efficient was clear: transmit all this vital information through the visual representation of data. In this work we analyze the problems associated with the data involved in these visualizations and review a selection of good and bad practices used in these communication strategies. Resumen Frente a la pandemia generada por el coronavirus, los gobiernos y los medios se encontraron de repente con el difícil reto de comunicar sobre este tema con la población y trasladar al gran público conceptos técnicos y grandes volúmenes de datos. Había que buscar una manera de hacer accesibles esos contenidos no familiares para todos, a través de fórmulas conocidas y asimilables. En ese contexto, la estrategia elegida para hacer más eficiente esa comunicación estaba clara: transmitir toda esa información vital a través de la representación visual de datos. En este trabajo analizamos los problemas asociados con los datos involucrados en esas visualizaciones y revisamos una selección de buenas y malas prácticas utilizadas en esas estrategias comunicativas.

Knowledge Management in Organizations

Within the last 10 years we have witnessed the appearance and consolidation of a brand- new discipline, that of knowledge management (KM), which has the organization and organizational environment as its primary focus. This discipline seeks to design systems and strategies to make it possible to systematically take advantage of the knowledge generated by and within an organization. Within the current economic situation characterized by extreme competitiveness and market globalization, the correct application of knowledge management offers an important competitive advantage in the business world, one capable of ensuring a company’s ongoing survival and operation. This article seeks to present a brief analysis of this new discipline and, at the same time, offer a useful conceptual framework as a tool for orientation to the literature of the field. In order to accomplish this, first we shall tackle the historical context of the discipline and describe the two main schools which have dominated the theoretical outlook of knowledge management ever since its inception, as well as their evolution. Secondly we shall compile an outline of the fundamental concepts upon which KM is based, and we shall introduce a detailed working definition of knowledge management. Last of all, we shall consider the methodological and pragmatic aspects involved in developing an effective KM program or system within an organization.
