Abstract
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive type of malignant brain tumor. Currently, the predominant clinical treatment is the combination of surgical resection with concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, using temozolomide (TMZ) as the primary chemotherapy drug. Lidocaine, a widely used amide‑based local anesthetic, has been found to have a significant anticancer effect. It has been reported that aberrant hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)/mesenchymal‑epithelial transition factor (MET) signaling plays a role in the progression of brain tumors. However, it remains unclear whether lidocaine can regulate the MET pathway in GBM. In the present study, the clinical importance of the HGF/MET pathway was analyzed using bioinformatics. By establishing TMZ‑resistant cell lines, the impact of combined treatment with lidocaine and TMZ was investigated. Additionally, the effects of lidocaine on cellular function were also examined and confirmed using knockdown techniques. The current findings revealed that the HGF/MET pathway played a key role in brain cancer, and its activation in GBM was associated with increased malignancy and poorer patient outcomes. Elevated HGF levels and activation of its receptor were found to be associated with TMZ resistance in GBM cells. Lidocaine effectively suppressed the HGF/MET pathway, thereby restoring TMZ sensitivity in TMZ‑resistant cells. Furthermore, lidocaine also inhibited cell migration. Overall, these results indicated that inhibiting the HGF/MET pathway using lidocaine can enhance the sensitivity of GBM cells to TMZ and reduce cell migration, providing a potential basis for developing novel therapeutic strategies for GBM.

Abstract
Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), as the most common phthalate, has been extensively used as a plasticizer to improve the plasticity of agricultural products, which pose severe harm to human health. Mitochondrial dynamics and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis are indispensable for maintaining mitochondria-associated ER membrane (MAM) integrity. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of DEHP on the nervous system and its association with the ER-mitochondria interaction. Here, we showed that DEHP caused morphological changes, motor deficits, cognitive impairments, and blood-brain barrier disruption in the brain. DEHP triggered ER stress, which is mainly mediated by protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) signaling. Moreover, DEHP-induced mitofusin-2 (Mfn2) downregulation results in imbalance of the mitochondrial dynamics. Interestingly, DEHP exposure impaired MAMs by inhibiting the Mfn2-PERK interaction. Above all, this study elucidates the disruption of the Mfn2-PERK axis-mediated ER-mitochondria interaction as a phthalate-induced neurotoxicity that could be potentially developed as a novel therapy for neurological diseases.

Abstract
As the most produced phthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely environmental pollutant primarily used as a plasticizer, which cause the harmful effects on human health. However, the impact of DEHP on spleen and its underlying mechanisms are still unclear. Pyroptosis is a novel form of cell death induced by activating NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasomes and implicated in pathogenesis of numerous inflammatory diseases. The current study aimed to explore the impact of DEHP on immune inflammatory response in mouse spleen. In this study, the male ICR mice were treated with DEHP (200 mg/kg) for 28 days. Here, DEHP exposure caused abnormal pathohistological and ultrastructural changes, accompanied by inflammatory cells infiltration in mouse spleen. DEHP exposure arouse heat shock response that involves increase of heat shock proteins 60 (HSP60) expression. DEHP also elevated the expressions of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and myeloid differentiation protein 88 (MyD88) proteins, as well as the activation of NF-κB pathway. Moreover, DEHP promoted NLRP3 inflammasome activation and triggered NLRP3 inflammasome-induced pyroptosis. Mechanistically, DEHP drives splenic inflammatory response via activating HSP60/TLR4/NLRP3 signaling axis-dependent pyroptosis. Our findings reveal that targeting HSP60-mediated TLR4/NLRP3 signaling axis may be a promising strategy for inflammatory diseases treatment.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy(HAIC) for unresectable hepatitis B-related intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ICC). Methods: This is a retrospective controlled study. Data from 140 unresectable ICC patients who received HAIC treatment at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from March 2015 to June 2023 were retrospectively collected, including 72 patients in the hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)negative group (43 males and 29 females, aged (59.6±9.5)years(range: 34 to 81 years)), 68 cases in the HBsAg-positive group (48 males, 20 females, aged (53.4±11.4)years(range: 29 to 82 years)). HAIC treatment used the FOLFOX regimen combined with oxaliplatin, leucovorin,and fluorouracil. The differences in effects, prognosis,and adverse reactions between the two groups of patients after HAIC treatment were analyzed. All variables were expressed as categorical data. The χ2 test or Fisher's exact probability method was used to compare between groups. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to draw survival curves. The difference of survival curve between groups were compared through the Log-rank test. Results: According to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors(RECIST) version 1.1,the objective response rate(ORR) of the HBsAg-negative group was 23.2%(16/69),and the ORR of the HBsAg-positive group was 40.3%(25/62). The difference in ORR between the two groups was statistically significant(χ2=4.459,P=0.035). According to the modified RECIST(mRECIST) criteria,the ORR of the HBsAg-negative group was 27.5%(19/69), and the ORR of the HBsAg-positive group was 45.2%(28/62). The difference in ORR between the two groups was statistically significant(χ2=4.410,P=0.036). The median progression-free survival(PFS) of the HBsAg-negative group and the positive group were 7.1 months(95%CI: 5.8 to 13.2 months) and 7.3 months (95%CI: 5.7 to 10.3 months), respectively, and the median overall survival(OS) were 16.3 months (95%CI: 12.5 to 33.9 months) and 15.9 months (95%CI: 9.2 to 20.7 months) respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in PFS and OS between the two groups (both P>0.05). The main serious adverse reactions of the two groups of patients included increased AST, increased ALT, thrombocytopenia,and neutropenia. There were no statistically significant differences in various adverse reactions between the two groups after HAIC treatment (all P>0.05). Conclusion: Patients with HBsAg-positive unresectable ICC are more likely to benefit from HAIC treatment.

Abstract
As the global population ages, the prevalence of neuroinflammatory diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and stroke continues to increase. Therefore, it is necessary to develop preventive and therapeutic methods against neuroinflammatory diseases. Lipofundin is a lipid emulsion commonly used in clinical anesthetic solvents and nutritional supplements. Lipid emulsions have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties. However, the potential beneficial effect of lipofundin against neuroinflammation requires elucidation. In the present study, two cell models were used to investigate the efficacy of lipofundin against neuroinflammation. In the first model, BV2 mouse microglial cells were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce nitric oxide (NO) production as a model of neuroinflammation. In the second model, HMC3 human microglial were activated by LPS, and changes in the secretion of factors associated with inflammation were analyzed using Luminex xMAP® technology. Griess assay results revealed that lipofundin significantly prevented and treated LPS-induced NO production. An anti-neuroinflammatory effect was also observed in HMC3 cells, where lipofundin exhibited excellent preventive and therapeutic properties by reducing the LPS-induced expression and secretion of interleukin-1β. Notably, lipofundin also promoted the secretion of certain growth factors, suggesting a potential neuroprotective effect. These results demonstrate that, in addition to its role as a solvent for drugs and nutritional support, lipofundin may also have beneficial effects in alleviating the progression of neuroinflammation. These findings may serve as an important reference for future translational medicine applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is influenced by the amount and duration of alcohol consumption. The resulting liver damage can range from reversible stages, such as steatosis, steatohepatitis and alcoholic fibrosis, to the advanced and irreversible stage of cirrhosis. Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member A1 (AKR1A1) is a member of the aldo-keto reductase family that catalyzes the reduction of aldehyde groups to their corresponding alcohols in an NADPH-dependent manner. AKR1A1 was found to be downregulated in patients diagnosed with ALD. This study aims to interpret the protective effects of AKR1A1 on the development of ALD. METHODS A 5% alcohol-fed (AF) Akr1a1 knockout (Akr1a1-/-) mouse model and an AML12 hepatocyte model were used. The effects of AKR1A1 on liver function, inflammation, oxidative stress, lipid accumulation, and fibrosis were assessed by ELISA, western blotting, RT‒PCR, and a variety of histological staining methods in AF-induced wild-type (WT) and Akr1a1-/- mice compared to control liquid diet-fed (PF) WT and Akr1a1-/- mice. RESULTS The results demonstrated that AF-WT mice expressed higher levels of AKR1A1 than WT mice fed a control diet, and they did not show any noticeable liver steatosis. However, AF-Akr1a1-/- mice displayed a lower survival rate and more severe liver injury than AF-WT mice, as demonstrated by increased proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, lipid accumulation, fibrosis, and reduced antioxidant enzymes in their livers. Additionally, elevated levels of 4-HNE and p53 phosphorylation were observed in AF-Akr1a1-/- mice, suggesting that the loss of AKR1A1 led to increased 4-HNE accumulation and subsequent activation of p53, which contributed to the progression of ALD. Furthermore, in AML12 hepatocytes, Akr1a1 knockdown aggravated oxidative stress and steatosis induced by palmitic acid/oleic acid (P/O) inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and fibrosis induced by TGF-β1. CONCLUSIONS This loss-of-function study suggests that AKR1A1 plays a liver-protective role during chronic alcohol consumption by reducing the accumulation of 4-HNE and inhibiting 4-HNE-mediated p53 activation.

Abstract
Hemophilia is a genetic disorder linked to the sex chromosomes, resulting in impaired blood clotting due to insufficient intrinsic coagulation factors. There are approximately one million individuals worldwide with hemophilia, with hemophilia A being the most prevalent form. The current treatment for hemophilia A involves the administration of clotting factor VIII (FVIII) through regular and costly injections, which only provide temporary relief and pose inconveniences to patients. In utero transplantation (IUT) is an innovative method for addressing genetic disorders, taking advantage of the underdeveloped immune system of the fetus. This allows mesenchymal stromal cells to play a role in fetal development and potentially correct genetic abnormalities. The objective of this study was to assess the potential recovery of coagulation disorders in FVIII knockout hemophilia A mice through the administration of human amniotic fluid mesenchymal stromal cells (hAFMSCs) via IUT at the D14.5 fetal stage. The findings revealed that the transplanted human cells exhibited fusion with the recipient liver, with a ratio of approximately one human cell per 10,000 mouse cells and produced human FVIII protein in the livers of IUT-treated mice. Hemophilia A pups born to IUT recipients demonstrated substantial improvement in their coagulation issues from birth throughout the growth period of up to 12 weeks of age. Moreover, FVIII activity reached its peak at 6 weeks of age, while the levels of FVIII inhibitors remained relatively low during the 12-week testing period in mice with hemophilia. In conclusion, the results indicated that prenatal intrahepatic therapy using hAFMSCs has the potential to improve clotting issues in FVIII knockout mice, suggesting it as a potential clinical treatment for individuals with hemophilia A.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To prevent aesthetic and functional deformities, precisely closed reduction is crucial in the management of nasal fractures. Plain film radiography (PF), ultrasonography (USG), and computed tomography can help confirm the diagnosis and classification of fractures and assist in performing closed reduction. However, no study in the literature reports on precisely closed reduction assisted with PF measurements under the picture archiving and communication system (PACS). METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 153 patients with nasal bone fracture between January 2013 and December 2017. Surgeons conducted precisely closed reduction assisted with PF measurement of the distance between the fracture site and nasal tip under PACS on 34 patients (group A). Another group on 119 patients were reduced under surgeon's experience (group B). RESULTS No significant differences in age, gender, Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen (AO) classification, and reduction outcome were observed between group A and group B (P > .05). The operative time of the group A was significantly lower (12.50 ± 4.64 minutes) compared to group B (23.78 ± 11.20 minutes; P < .001). After adjusted age, gender, and AO classification, patients in group A scored 10.46 minutes less on the operative time than those in group B (P < .001). In addition, the severity of nasal bone fracture (AO classification, β = 3.37, P = .002) was positive associated with the operative time. CONCLUSIONS In this study, closed reduction in nasal bone fracture assisted with PF measurements under PACS was performed precisely, thereby effectively decreasing operative time and the occurrence of complications. This procedure requires neither the use of new instruments or C-arm nor USG or navigation experience. Moreover, reduction can be easily performed using this method, and it requires short operative time, helps achieve great reduction, less radiation exposures, and is cost-effective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suction-curettage by arthroscopic shaver is the most effective treatment for bromhidrosis; however, postoperative complications require wound management and exhibit a high risk of hypertrophic scarring. We investigated factors affecting postoperative complications. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated data for 215 patients (430 axillae) with bromhidrosis treated with suction-curettage by arthroscopic shaver between 2011 and 2019. Cases followed for less than 1 year were excluded. Complications of hematoma or seroma, epidermis decortication, skin necrosis, and infection were recorded. Multinomial logistic analysis was used to calculate odds ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals for the complication of the surgery, adjusting for relevant statistically significant variables. RESULTS Complications occurred in 52 axillae (12.1%). Epidermis decortication occurred in 24 axillae (5.6%), with a significant difference for age (P < 0.001). Hematoma occurred in 10 axillae (2.3%) with a significant difference in tumescent infiltration use (P = 0.039). Skin necrosis occurred in 16 axillae (3.7%) with a significant difference for age (P = 0.001). Infection occurred in 2 axillae (0.5%). Severe scarring occurred in 15 axillae (3.5%), with complications related to more severe skin scarring (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Older age was a risk factor for complications. Use of tumescent infiltration resulted in good postoperative pain control and less hematoma. Patients with complications presented with more severe skin scarring, but none experienced limited range of motion after massage.

Abstract
Aims: Vascular calcification (VC) and osteoporosis were previously considered two distinct diseases. However, current understanding indicates that they share common pathogenetic mechanisms. The available medicines for treating VC and osteoporosis are limited. We previously demonstrated that kefir peptides (KPs) alleviated atherosclerosis in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE−/−) mice. The present study further addressed the preventive effects of KPs on VC and osteoporosis in ApoE−/− mice fed a high-cholesterol atherogenic diet (AD).Main methods: Seven-week-old ApoE−/− and wild-type C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into five groups (n = 6). The development of VC and osteoporosis was evaluated after AD feeding for 13 weeks in KP-treated ApoE−/− mice and compared to C57BL/6 and ApoE−/− mice fed a standard chow diet (CD).Key findings: The results indicated that KP-treated ApoE−/− mice exhibited lower serum total cholesterol, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and creatine kinase (CK) activities, which suggested that KPs prevented hyperlipidemia and possible damages to the liver and muscle in ApoE−/− mice. KPs reduced serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and the local expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, and macrophage-specific CD68 markers in aortic tissues, which suggested that KPs inhibited inflammatory responses in AD-fed ApoE−/− mice. KPs reduced the deposition of lipid, collagen, and calcium minerals in the aortic roots of AD-fed ApoE−/− mice, which suggested that KPs inhibited the calcific progression of atherosclerotic plaques. KPs exerted osteoprotective effects in AD-fed ApoE−/− mice, which was evidenced by lower levels of the bone resorption marker CTX-1 and higher levels of the bone formation marker P1NP. KPs improved cortical bone mineral density and bone volume and reduced trabecular bone loss in femurs.Significance: The present data suggested that KPs attenuated VC and osteoporosis by reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in AD-fed ApoE−/− mice. Our findings contribute to the application of KPs as preventive medicines for the treatment of hyperlipidemia-induced vascular and bone degeneration.

Abstract
Recent reports have revealed that oncolytic viruses (OVs) play a significant role in cancer therapy. The infection of OVs such as oncolytic vaccinia virus (OVV), vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), parvovirus, mammalian reovirus (MRV), human adenovirus, Newcastle disease virus (NDV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), avian reovirus (ARV), Orf virus (ORFV), inactivated Sendai virus (ISV), enterovirus, and coxsackievirus offer unique opportunities in immunotherapy through diverse and dynamic pathways. This mini-review focuses on the mechanisms of OVs-mediated virotherapy and their effects on immunogenic cell death (ICD), apoptosis, autophagy and regulation of the immune system.

Abstract
Phthalates are widely used to improve the flexibility of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) polymer agriculture products. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a type of addition to plastic and can lead to many health problems. Hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an extremely important molecule that releases enzymatic products to promote ferroptosis. This research aimed to explore the function of HO-1 in DEHP-induced renal proximal tubule cell ferroptosis. In the experiment, ICR male mice are exposed to (0, 50, 200, and 500 mg/kg BW/day) DEHP for 28 days. Here, we observed that DEHP induced glomeruli atrophy and the tubules swell. Furthermore, DEHP exposure could increase ferrous iron content and decrease antioxidant activity. We also found that DEHP exposure increased the expression of nuclear factor-erythroid 2 p45-related factor 2 (NFE2L2) in the nucleus. In particular, the expression of (HO-1) is significantly increased both in protein and mRNA levels. Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) as an endogenous control of ferroptosis was downregulated, which proved the occurrence of ferroptosis. In the study, exposure to DEHP activated the NFE2L2/HO-1 signaling pathway and resulted in ferroptosis of the proximal tubule. This research connects ferroptosis with HO-1, providing new insights into the potential roles of phthalates in nephrotoxicity.

Abstract
The global rate of human male infertility is rising at an alarming rate owing to environmental and lifestyle changes. Phthalates are the most hazardous chemical additives in plastics and have an apparently negative impact on the function of male reproductive system. Ferroptosis is a recently described form of iron-dependent cell death and has been linked to several diseases. Transferrin receptor (TfRC), a specific ferroptosis marker, is a universal iron importer for all cells using extracellular transferrin. We aim to investigate the potential involvement of ferroptosis during male reproductive toxicity, and provide means for drawing conclusions on the effect of ferroptosis in phthalates-induced male reproductive disease. In this study, we found that di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) triggered blood-testis barrier (BTB) dysfunction in the mouse testicular tissues. DEHP also induced mitochondrial morphological changes and lipid peroxidation, which are manifestations of ferroptosis. As the primary metabolite of DEHP, mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) induced ferroptosis by inhibiting glutathione defense network and increasing lipid peroxidation. TfRC knockdown blocked MEHP-induced ferroptosis by decreasing mitochondrial and intracellular levels of Fe2+. Our findings indicate that TfRC can regulate Sertoli cell ferroptosis and therefore is a novel therapeutic molecule for reproductive disorders in male patients with infertility.

Abstract
Phthalates as a large group of environmental pollutants are used primarily as plasticizers and solvents, which have become a growing problem worldwide. Epidemiological results show that severity of heart disease is related to degree of environmental contamination. As the most usually used phthalate, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has toxic effects on organism health and is also a major cause of heart damage. Ingestion of food, liquid, or dust contaminated with DEHP are major routes of exposure. The purpose of the present research was to determine the mechanism of cardiotoxicity in mice after exposure to DEHP. Here, male mice were treated by gavage with three different doses of (50, 200 and 500 mg/kg b.w.) DEHP for 28 days. Our research showed that DEHP brought about histopathological changes involving cardiomyocyte lysis and rupture, and ultrastructural damage such as dissolution and loss of mitochondrial cristae. Furthermore, DEHP induced oxidative stress and a significant decline in the antioxidant function, which activates nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme-oxygense-1 (HO-1) signaling pathways. Interestingly, DEHP resulted in lipid peroxidation and increased ferrous ion content, suggesting that ferroptosis occurred in mouse hearts. Therefore, our findings demonstrated that DEHP could induce cardiac ferroptosis via upregulation of HO-1. The present study provides novel evidence of HO-1 as a target for DEHP-induced cardiotoxicity.

Abstract
Male infertility is an attracting growing concern owing to decline in sperm quality of men worldwide. Phthalates, in particular to di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) or its main metabolite mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), affect male reproductive development and function, which mainly accounts for reduction in male fertility. Lycopene (LYC) is a natural antioxidant agent that has been recognized as a possible therapeutic option for treating male infertility. Testosterone (T)/androgen receptor (AR) signaling pathway is involved in maintaining spermatogenesis and male fertility. How DEHP causes spermatogenesis disturbance and whether LYC could prevent DEHP-induced male reproductive toxicity have remained unclear. Using in vivo and vitro approaches, we demonstrated that DEHP caused T biosynthesis reduction in Leydig cell and secretory function disorder in Sertoli cell, and thereby resulted in spermatogenic impairment. Results also showed that MEHP caused mitochondrial damage and oxidative damage, which imposes a serious threat to the progress of spermatogenesis. However, LYC supplement reversed these changes. Mechanistically, DEHP contributed to male infertility via perturbing T/AR signaling pathway during spermatogenesis. Overall, our study reveals critical role for T/AR signal transduction in male fertility and provides promising insights into the protective role of LYC in phthalate-induced male reproductive disorders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Male infertility is a multifactorial pathological condition and may be a harbinger of future health. Phthalates are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that have been implicated in the global decline in male fertility. Among them, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most prevalently used. Lycopene (LYC) is a possible preventive and therapeutic agent for male infertility owing to its antioxidant properties. The blood-testis barrier (BTB) is formed between Sertoli cells where it creates a unique microenvironment for spermatogenesis. OBJECTIVES We hypothesize that phthalate caused male infertility and LYC plays an important role in phthalate-induced male fertility disorders. METHODS Hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining, ultrastructure observation, and fluorescence microscopy were used to examine the morphological changes. RNA-Seq, and western blotting were conducted to detect gene and protein levels. Routine testing for sperm morphology and sperm-egg binding assay were conducted to examine the morphological structure and function of sperm. Cell scratch assay and transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) were used to detect cell migration capacity and barrier integrity. RESULTS In vivo experiments, we showed that LYC prevented DEHP-induced impairment of BTB integrity, which provided a guarantee for the smooth progress of spermatogenesis. LYC improved DEHP-induced change in sperm parameters and fertilization ability. Subsequent in vitro experiments, LYC alleviated MEHP-induced disruption of intercellular junctions in mouse Spermatogonia cells (GC-1 cells) and mouse Sertoli cells (TM4 cells). In MEHP-induced BTB impairment models of Sertoli cells, treatment with LYC or overexpressing connexin-43 (Cx43) promoted cell migration capacity and normalized BTB integrity. Cx43 knockdown inhibited cell migration capacity and perturbed BTB reassembly in LYC preventing DEHP-induced BTB impairment. CONCLUSION Our study provides evidence for the role of LYC in phthalates-induced spermatogenic disorders and points to Cx43 as a potential target for male fertility.

ABSTRACT Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a rare disorder resulting in disfiguring facial asymmetry. Ocular manifestations can result in complex strabismus. There were limited reports on the treatment of PRS with coexisting strabismus. We present a multistaged surgical approach to manage the facial asymmetry and strabismus.

Abstract
At present, the classification, nomenclature, and definition of carcinoma of the bile ducts are controversial. Moreover, there is no uniformity between China and aboard, which has brought confusion to clinical practice. It needs to clarify regarding tumor naming principles, anatomical location, tumor origin, pathological classification, biological characteristics, clinical manifestations, treatment methods, etc. Additionally, the WHO tumor classification, UICC staging, ICD disease classification, relevant Chinese regulations, EASL, AJCC staging, and NCCN guidelines were also needed to be referred. After investigating the above-mentioned latest authoritative literature, based on the existing problems, combined with clinical practice in China, the author reevaluated the definition, classification, and nomenclature of cholangiocarcinoma, and proposes updated suggestions. Hoping to standardize and unify clinical practice for classification and nomenclature of cholangiocarcinoma in China.

Abstract
PURPOSE Modern cataract surgeries aim to treat impaired vision and also improve quality of life. An appropriate pre-operative selection of the intraocular lens is important to post-operative quality of life. Patients often have difficulty in choosing the best fit for individual needs. Patient decision aids (PDAs) are useful tools to assist patients in such decision-making process. However, most PDAs are paper-based and lack user interaction. This study is aimed to develop and evaluate an interactive computerized patient decision aid (cPDA) to help patients in the selection of an appropriate intraocular lens model before cataract surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients and their families who were making the decision regarding intraocular lens selection before cataract surgeries were eligible to participate in this study. A cPDA was built on an interactive robot, to help the patients in the decision-making process. The usefulness of the cPDA was measured with the Decision Self-Efficacy (DSE) scale and Preparation for Decision Making (PrepDM) scale. RESULTS A total of 50 participants (18 men and 32 women) were enrolled in the pilot test. The mean pre-cPDA DSE score was 46.5 ± 13.6, and the post-cPDA DSE score was 72.6 ±12.8. The average gain score on DSE was 26.1, and the standard deviation was 8.0. The gain score on DSE was statistically significant, and the effect size was bigger than 3. The patients with junior or senior high degrees had the highest gain score on DSE, and the ones with college or above degrees had the lowest. The patients with college or above degrees had the highest PrepDM score, and the ones with elementary school or below had the lowest. Age and sex were not significant correlates of PrepDM. The patients with college or above degrees had the highest preparedness, but the lowest gain on DSE. CONCLUSION Education levels are associated with the usefulness of cPDA, both for the preparedness and decision efficacy of patients. The results provide insight into the feasibility of cPDA for the decision-making of pre-operative intraocular lens selection.

Abstract
Among the different types of oral cancer, >90% of cases are oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a commonly used treatment for OSCC, but cells typically display resistance to the drug. Propofol, an intravenous anesthetic agent, exhibits certain anticancer effects, including the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Secreted proteins, such as growth factors and cytokines are involved in cancer development and progression, but the effect of propofol on secreted proteins in OSCC is not completely understood. An MTT assay, flow cytometry and western blotting were performed to determine the anticancer effects of propofol. The secretion profile of OSCC was determined using an antibody array, and clinical importance was assessed using the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis database. The results were verified by performing reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and western blotting. 5-FU-resistant cells were established to determine the role of the gene of interest in drug resistance. The results demonstrated that propofol decreased cell viability and promoted cell apoptosis. The antibody array results showed that propofol attenuated the secretion of multiple growth factors. The bioinformatics results indicated that amphiregulin (AREG) was expressed at significantly higher levels in cancer tissues, which was also related to poor prognosis. The results of RT-qPCR and western blotting revealed that propofol decreased AREG expression. Pretreatment with exogenous recombinant AREG increased EGFR activation and conferred propofol resistance. Moreover, the results indicated that the expression and activation of AREG was also related to 5-FU resistance, but propofol ameliorated 5-FU drug resistance. Therefore, the present study suggested that propofol combination therapy may serve as an effective treatment strategy for OSCC.

Abstract
Soybean oil (SO)-, SO medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)-, olive oil (OO)-, and fish oil (FO)-based lipid emulsions are generally applied in clinical practice via intravenous injection for patients with nutritional requirements. The function of lipid emulsions on immune modulation remains inconsistent, and their effects on macrophages are limited. In the present study, we used a model of S. aureus-infected mouse RAW264.7 macrophages to determine the influence of three different compositions of lipid emulsions (Lipofundin, ClinOleic, and Omegaven) on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, phagocytosis, and bacterial survival. The three individual lipid emulsions similarly enhanced bacterial survival but reduced S. aureus-stimulated ROS, phagocytosis of S. aureus bioparticles conjugate, polymerization of F-actin, and phosphorylation of AKT, JNK, and ERK. Compared with the JNK and ERK inhibitors, the PI3K inhibitor markedly suppressed the phagocytosis of S. aureus bioparticles conjugate and the polymerization of F-actin, whereas it significantly increased the bacterial survival. These results suggest that the three lipid emulsions diminished ROS production and phagocytosis, resulting in increased bacterial survival. PI3K predominantly mediated the inhibitory effects of the lipid emulsions on the phagocytosis of mouse RAW264.7 macrophages.

Abstract
Currently, the systematized nomenclature of medicine (SNOMED) of liver cancer is confusing, and it is mixed with the SNOMED of cholangiocarcinoma. We hereby presented our own points, hoping to provide a reference for standardizing the nomenclatures and classifications of liver cancer in future clinical studies. The preface of Chinese Guidelines of Primary Liver Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment (2019 Edition) indicated that primary liver cancer mainly includes three different pathological types, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), and mixed-type carcinoma of both HCC and ICC. These three types of carcinoma show great differences in terms of pathogenesis, biological behavior, histological morphology, treatment methods, and prognosis, among which, HCC accounts for 85% to 90%. Therefore, this study is a detailed analysis of the above-mentioned related SNOMED and proposes suggestions for corrections.

Abstract
We report the case of a 38-year-old man with abducens palsy following a traumatic skull injury who failed multiple strabismus surgeries. A suture-armed 5 mm micro bone screw was placed on the anterior face of the lateral orbital rim and used to tether and abduct the globe. The patient remained orthotropic in primary position 12 months postoperatively.

Abstract
Lipofundin is the solvent for propofol in the intravenous injection of Propofol-Lipuro® and is used in patients who need intravenous feeding to provide fatty acids and fat for energy. In addition to propofol, Lipofundin also affects the immune modulation of phagocytes. In a previous study, we reported that intravenous propofol effectively decreased Staphylococcus aureus-stimulated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, IL-1β secretion, and phagocytosis in RAW264.7 macrophages. It is important to separately assess the effects of pure propofol, Lipofundin, and Propofol-Lipuro. By using an S. aureus-infected RAW264.7 macrophage model, the levels of secreted IL-1β in cell supernatants were determined by ELISA. IL-1β mRNA in cell pellets was further analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and Western blotting was performed to detect pro-IL-1β synthesis. Total ROS levels were determined by a luminol chemiluminescence assay. Compared with pure propofol, treatment with clinically relevant concentrations of Propofol-Lipuro and Lipofundin obviously reduced IL-1β secretion (>85% inhibition), S. aureus-stimulated ROS production (50% inhibition), and phagocytosis (>60% inhibition) to similar levels. Treatment with pure propofol alone significantly decreased IL-1β mRNA levels and pro-IL-1β protein synthesis, and slightly inhibited phagocytosis. In contrast, treatment with Propofol-Lipuro did not influence IL-1β mRNA or pro-IL-1β protein expression, even though treatment with Lipofundin increased the levels of both IL-1β mRNA and its precursor protein. In conclusion, IL-1β secretion is regulated at the posttranslational level. Lipofundin mediated the major effect of Propofol-Lipuro on the inhibition of IL-1β secretion, ROS production, and phagocytosis in S. aureus-infected RAW264.7 cells.

Abstract
Autologous breast reconstructions using deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps create a large incision, presenting an opportunity for surgical site complications. In this pilot study, we aimed to examine outcomes in DIEP donor site incisions managed with standard dressings (control; n = 5) or closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT; n = 5). We observed no significant differences between group age, body mass index, and past medical history. Both treatment groups had a similar duration of hospital stay, the number of blood transfusions, and pain scores on postoperative day 2 (P > .05). There was a trend of higher drainage (P = .251) and shorter time to incision healing (P = .067) in the ciNPT group than the control though the difference was not statistically significant. We did observe a significant improvement in scar pigmentation, vascularity, and pliability at 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgery in the ciNPT group compared with control (P < .05). No surgical site complications were reported in the ciNPT group within the follow-up period. In the control group, one patient developed wound edge fat necrosis requiring reoperation. In conclusion, we report that ciNPT is a useful incision management system for DIEP flap donor site incisions and it facilitated improved scar quality over standard dressings in this small pilot study. Further clinical studies are required to assess the full advantages provided by ciNPT.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the correlation between the parameters of the new generation of Acoustic Cardiography and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and cardiac function grading in the diagnosis of heart failure. Methods: One hundred and sixty-eight inpatients, who were hospitalized in Department of Cardiology, Haikou People's Hospital from May 2016 to July 2017, were enrolled as heart failure group, including NYHA class Ⅰ(n=29), NYHA class Ⅱ(n=40), NYHA class Ⅲ(n=64), NYHA class Ⅳ (n=35). And eighty-seven patients with normal cardiac function were selected as healthy control group. The data of the two groups were analyzed after the Acoustic Cardiography test, BNP determination and LVEF examination. Results: The differences in QRS duration, electromechanical activation time (EMAT), EMAT%, systolic dysfunction index (SDI), third heart sound (S3) and other indicators among the groups with different levels of cardiac function were statistically significant (P<0.05). The difference in left ventricular systolic time (LVST) between the cardiac function grade Ⅰ and healthy group was not significant (P>0.05), while the differences among the rest groups were significant. There was a positive correlation between QRS duration, EMAT%, SDI, S3 and BNP (t=9.46, 11.38, 12.14, 9.67, respectively, P<0.05); LVST and BNP were negatively correlated (t=-14.27, P<0.05). There was a negative correlation between QRS duration, EMAT%, SDI, S3 and LVEF (t=11.24, -8.764, -2.393, -0.579, respectively, P<0.05). There was a positive correlation between LVST and LVEF (t=23.48, P<0.05). There was a positive correlation between QRS duration, EMAT%, SDI, S3 and cardiac function grading (β=0.003, 0.234, 0.419, 0.352, respectively, P<0.05). There was a negative correlation between LVST and cardiac function grade (β=-0.021, P<0.05). Conclusion: The parameters of the Acoustic Cardiography test (EMAT%, EMAT, SDI, S3 ) are closely related to BNP, LVEF and cardiac function grading, and can be used as assistant indexes for the diagnosis and evaluation of heart failure.

Abstract
This phase 1 dose-escalation study evaluated pomalidomide, bortezomib (subcutaneous (SC) or intravenous (IV)) and low-dose dexamethasone (LoDEX) in lenalidomide-refractory and proteasome inhibitor-exposed relapsed or relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). In 21-day cycles, patients received pomalidomide (1-4 mg days 1-14), bortezomib (1-1.3 mg/m2 days 1, 4, 8 and 11 for cycles 1-8; days 1 and 8 for cycle ⩾9) and LoDEX. Primary endpoint was to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD). Thirty-four patients enrolled: 12 during escalation, 10 in the MTD IV bortezomib cohort and 12 in the MTD SC bortezomib cohort. Patients received a median of 2 prior lines of therapy; 97% bortezomib exposed. With no dose-limiting toxicities, MTD was defined as the maximum planned dose: pomalidomide 4 mg, bortezomib 1.3 mg/m2 and LoDEX. All patients discontinued treatment by data cutoff (2 April 2015). The most common grade 3/4 treatment-emergent adverse events were neutropenia (44%) and thrombocytopenia (26%), which occurred more frequently with IV than SC bortezomib. No grade 3/4 peripheral neuropathy or deep vein thrombosis was reported. Overall response rate was 65%. Median duration of response was 7.4 months. Pomalidomide, bortezomib and LoDEX was well tolerated and effective in lenalidomide-refractory and bortezomib-exposed patients with RRMM.

Abstract
With the development of early diagnostic and surgical techniques, the postoperative outcome of patients with liver cancer is gradually improved, but long-term outcome remains unsatisfactory. The therapeutic methods for recurrent tumors include multidisciplinary therapeutic methods such as reoperation, local treatment, and systematic treatment. Multidisciplinary therapies can improve the overall response of recurrent liver cancer, and it can combine various therapies from different disciplines according to the patient's condition and take advantages of each therapy in order to achieve the best therapeutic effect.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association between serum keratin 18 (K18) level and prognosis in patients with HBV-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). Methods: A total of 120 patients who visited Department of Hepatology in Fuzhou Infectious Disease Hospital and were diagnosed with HBV-related ACLF from December 2012 to March 2014 were enrolled and followed up for 3 months. The patients were divided into death group and survival group. The serum levels of K18 fragments (M30 and M65) were measured and related laboratory data were collected to analyze the differences in M30, M65, M30/M65, and other laboratory markers. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to screen out independent risk factors for death in patients with HBV-related ACLF, and the corresponding logistic regression model (LRM) was established. Another 51 patients with HBV-related ACLF from April to October, 2014 were enrolled; M30 and M65 were measured and related clinical data were collected to calculate LRM value and validate the diagnostic value of LRM. Results: The 120 patients with HBV-related ACLF were followed up for 3 months, and 40 of them died, resulting in a mortality rate of 33.3%. Compared with the survival group, the death group had significantly higher age, percentage of neutrophils, blood ammonia, international normalized ratio, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, and M65, as well as significantly lower prothrombin time activity and alpha-fetoprotein level. The death group also had significantly higher incidence rates of underlying diseases and complications such as diabetes, liver cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy (HE), pulmonary infection, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and hepatorenal syndrome than the survival group. Age, HE, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, direct bilirubin (DBil), and M30/M65 were independent risk factors for the prognosis of patients with HBV-related ACLF. The model established was LRM = 0.061 × age + 0.69 × HE + 4.11 × upper gastrointestinal bleeding + 3.201 × ln(DBil) - 3.875 × ln(M30/M65) - 24.248. The 51 patients with HBV-related ACLF were followed up for 3 months, and the LRM value and MELD score were calculated. The areas under the ROC curve for the LRM model and MELD score were 0.889 and 0.858, respectively, and there was no significant difference between them (Z = 0.417, P > 0.05). Conclusion: M30/M65 ratio has a high value in the diagnosis of HBV-related ACLF, and the LRM model containing M30/M65 ratio can well predict the short-term outcome of patients with HBV-related ACLF.

Abstract
Incorporation of selected diphosphates of nucleoside phosphonates and triphosphates of currently approved anti-human immunodeficiency virus nucleoside analogues into DNA by human DNA polymerases α, β and γ was studied. All three polymerases were able to incorporate diphosphates of 9-(2-phosphonomethoxyethyl)adenine (PMEApp), 9-(2-phosphonomethoxyethyl)guanine (PMEGpp), ( R)-9-(2-phosphonomethoxypropyl)adenine (PMPApp), ( R)-9-(2-phosphononomethoxypropyl)-2,6-diaminopurine (PMPDAPpp) and ( 2R,5R)-9-[2,5-dihydro-5-(phosphonomethoxy)-2-furanyl]adenine (D4APpp) into primer/template DNA of defined sequence. After incorporation, these nucleoside phosphonates acted as terminators of primer extension. Kinetic constants of their incorporation were determined and compared with those for incorporation of ddATP, ddCTP, (-)-2′-deoxy-3′-thiacytidine triphosphate (3TC-TP), 2′,3′-didehydro-3′-deoxythymidine triphosphate (d4T-TP) and 3′-azido-3′-deoxythymidine triphosphate (AZT-TP). Relative efficiencies of incorporation (percentage of the incorporation efficiency for the corresponding natural deoxynucleoside triphosphate) by DNA polymerase a ranged from 0.05% for 3TC-TP to 51% for PMEGpp. DNA polymerase β catalysed the incorporation with relative efficiencies ranging from 0.014% for AZT-TP to 125% for ddCTP, and efficiencies of incorporation by DNA polymerase γ varied between 0.13% for 3TC-TP and 25% for ddCTP. Generally, the lowest incorporation efficiencies with all three polymerases were found for PMPApp (0.06–1.4%) and PMPDAPpp (0.075–2.2%).

Abstract
In this review, we argue for a research initiative on wheat's responses to biotic stress. One goal is to begin a conversation between the disparate communities of plant pathology and entomology. Another is to understand how responses to a variety of agents of biotic stress are integrated in an important crop. We propose gene-for-gene interactions as the focus of the research initiative. On the parasite's side is an Avirulence (Avr) gene that encodes one of the many effector proteins the parasite applies to the plant to assist with colonization. On the plant's side is a Resistance (R) gene that mediates a surveillance system that detects the Avr protein directly or indirectly and triggers effector-triggered plant immunity. Even though arthropods are responsible for a significant proportion of plant biotic stress, they have not been integrated into important models of plant immunity that come from plant pathology. A roadblock has been the absence of molecular evidence for arthropod Avr effectors. Thirty years after this evidence was discovered in a plant pathogen, there is now evidence for arthropods with the cloning of the Hessian fly's vH13 Avr gene. After reviewing the two models of plant immunity, we discuss how arthropods could be incorporated. We end by showing features that make wheat an interesting system for plant immunity, including 479 resistance genes known from agriculture that target viruses, bacteria, fungi, nematodes, insects, and mites. It is not likely that humans will be subsisting on Arabidopsis in the year 2050. It is time to start understanding how agricultural plants integrate responses to biotic stress.

Abstract
Acute cerebral hemorrhage (ACH) is an important clinical problem that is often
monitored and studied with expensive devices such as computed tomography,
magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography. These devices are
not readily available in economically underdeveloped regions of the world,
emergency departments, and emergency zones. We have developed a less expensive
tool for non-contact monitoring of ACH. The system measures the magnetic
induction phase shift (MIPS) between the electromagnetic signals on two coils.
ACH was induced in 6 experimental rabbits and edema was induced in 4 control
rabbits by stereotactic methods, and their intracranial pressure and heart rate
were monitored for 1 h. Signals were continuously monitored for up to 1 h at an
exciting frequency of 10.7 MHz. Autologous blood was administered to the
experimental group, and saline to the control group (1 to 3 mL) by injection of
1-mL every 5 min. The results showed a significant increase in MIPS as a
function of the injection volume, but the heart rate was stable. In the
experimental (ACH) group, there was a statistically significant positive
correlation of the intracranial pressure and MIPS. The change of MIPS was
greater in the ACH group than in the control group. This high-sensitivity system
could detect a 1-mL change in blood volume. The MIPS was significantly related
to the intracranial pressure. This observation suggests that the method could be
valuable for detecting early warning signs in emergency medicine and critical
care units.

Abstract
Due to the development of drug resistance, the outcome for the majority of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (acute myelogenous leukemia; AML) remains poor. To prevent drug resistance and increase the therapeutic efficacy of treating AML, the development of new combinatory drug therapies is necessary. Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is expressed in AML biopsies and is essential for the drug resistance of cancer stem cells of AML. AML patients are frequently infected by bacteria and exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LPS itself, its derivatives, and its downstream effectors, such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferons (IFNs), have been shown to provoke anti-tumor effects. The application of a Shh inhibitor against AML cells in the presence of LPS/TNF-α/IFNs has not been investigated. We found that the Shh inhibitor cyclopamine in combination with LPS treatment synergistically induced massive cell apoptosis in THP-1 and U937 cells. The cytotoxic effects of this combined drug treatment were confirmed in 5 additional AML cell lines, in primary AML cells, and in an AML mouse model. Replacing cyclopamine with another Shh inhibitor, Sant-1, had the same effect. LPS could be substituted by TNF-α or IFNs to induce AML cell death in combination with cyclopamine. Our results suggest a potential strategy for the development of new therapies employing Shh antagonists in the presence of LPS/TNF-α/IFNs for the treatment of AML patients.

Abstract
A manual guided vehicle (MGV) is used to handle heavy materials in thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) manufacturing clean rooms. This study focuses on evaluating the force exertions and muscle activities in MGV operations. The independent variables include gender, force direction, handle height, load handled and wheel diameter of the MGV. The results show the force direction, handle height and load handling effects are significant in most measures except for F(ending) (the peak force required to stop the MGV) and the EMG of the anterior deltoid. The wheel diameter had a significant effect on F(initial) (the peak force required to move the MGV) and F(ending) responses. Gender did not significantly effect any measures. Moreover, the pushing and pulling force is less at 115cm handle height than at 101.5cm and 88cm handle heights. Using 15.3cm (6 inch) diameter wheels requires less force than 20.3cm (8 inch) diameter wheels because the two front wheels are fixed and the two rear wheels are rotatable. The design implications are discussed.

Abstract
Metal oxides and oxide thin films are extensively used as active catalysts and catalytic supports, as well as in many other important technical applications. Unlike TiO(2), which is a semiconductor and can be investigated using a variety of surface science techniques, most metal oxides are insulators, which seriously restricts their use as model surfaces with modern surface science techniques. This difficulty can be circumvented by synthesizing ultrathin oxide films a few nanometers in thickness with well-defined structures, that mimic the corresponding bulk oxides yet are thin enough to be sufficiently conducting. In this review, preparations, structures, electronic and chemical properties of four representative oxides, alumina, magnesium oxide, silica, and titania, are addressed. Of these MgO is found to grow in a layer-by-layer fashion, allowing preparation of crystalline thin film structures with varying thicknesses. Crystalline TiO(2) and Ti(2)O(3) can also be synthesized, whereas SiO(2) and Al(2)O(3), although amenable to synthesis as well-defined monolayer structures, have only been grown to date as amorphous multilayers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are widely used during the induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Postoperative residual curarization (PORC) following the use of NMBAs still occurs even though intermediate-acting NMBAs were used. Train-of-four (TOF) stimulation is used to quantify the degree of neuromuscular blockade. The TOF ratio of 0.7 in the adductor pollicis muscle was associated with normal respiratory function. Pharyngeal function returned to normal while the TOF ratio reached 0.9. The aim of this study was to survey the PORC in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). METHODS In this observational study, 308 patients who received general anesthesia with NMBAs were enrolled. Residual curarization was evaluated using the TOF-Watch acceleromyograph upon arrival in the PACU. Three consecutive TOF stimulations were applied and recorded at 15-second intervals. Two thresholds of TOF ratios (0.9 and 0.7) were used to assess the presence of residual curarization. RESULTS TOF ratios less than 0.7 and 0.9 were observed in 15 (5%), and 97 (31%) patients, respectively. The differences of the TOF ratios between the male and female patients were significant (p = 0.014). In terms of weight, the differences between the patients with ratios > 0.9 and < or = 0.9 were significant (p = 0.013). There were 67, 49, 15, and three patients who received reversal medication in the > 0.9 group, < or = 0.9 and > 0.7 group, and < or = 0.7 group, respectively. The differences of the TOF ratios between the patients who received and those who did not receive reversal medication were not significant (p = 0.91). CONCLUSION PORC is still a clinical problem in the modern PACU. Objective neuromuscular monitoring needs to be performed to ensure patient safety.

Abstract
Tea is the most popular beverage in the world, second only to water. Tea contains an infusion of the leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant rich in polyphenolic compounds known as catechins, the most abundant of which is (-)-EGCG. Although tea has been consumed for centuries, it has only recently been studied extensively as a health-promoting beverage that may act to prevent a number of chronic diseases and cancers. The results of several investigations indicate that green tea consumption may be of modest benefit in reducing the plasma concentration of cholesterol and preventing atherosclerosis. Additionally, the cancer-preventive effects of green tea are widely supported by results from epidemiological, cell culture, animal and clinical studies. In vitro cell culture studies show that tea polyphenols potently induce apoptotic cell death and cell cycle arrest in tumor cells but not in their normal cell counterparts. Green tea polyphenols were shown to affect several biological pathways, including growth factor-mediated pathway, the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase-dependent pathway, and ubiquitin/proteasome degradation pathways. Various animal studies have revealed that treatment with green tea inhibits tumor incidence and multiplicity in different organ sites such as skin, lung, liver, stomach, mammary gland and colon. Recently, phase I and II clinical trials have been conducted to explore the anticancer effects of green tea in humans. A major challenge of cancer prevention is to integrate new molecular findings into clinical practice. Therefore, identification of more molecular targets and biomarkers for tea polyphenols is essential for improving the design of green tea trials and will greatly assist in a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying its anti-cancer activity.

Abstract
We have used in situ polarization-modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy to study the adsorption/dissociation of NO on Rh(111). While these studies have not been conclusive regarding the detailed surface structures formed during adsorption, they have provided important new information on the dissociation of NO on Rh(111). At moderate pressures (< or =10(-6) Torr) and temperatures (<275 K), a transition from 3-fold hollow to atop bonding is apparent. Data indicate that this transition is not due to the migration of the 3-fold hollow NO but rather to the adsorption of gas-phase NO that is directed toward the atop position due to the presence of NO decomposition products, particularly chemisorbed atomic O species at the hollow sites. These results indicate that NO dissociation occurs at temperatures well below the temperature previously reported. Additionally, high pressure (1 Torr) NO exposure at 300 K results in only atop NO, calling into question the surface structures previously proposed at these adsorption conditions consisting of atop and 3-fold hollow sites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is still a common and major complication for surgical patients, which may delay post-anesthetic care unit discharge, prolong hospital stay and thus increase the cost of hospitalization. It is understood that PONV is a multi-factorial outcome and occurs more often with general anesthesia than with other anesthetic methods. Prophylactic administration of antihistamines, antidopaminergics, anticholinergics, phenothiazines, serotonin antagonist, steroids and even acupuncture has been shown to be effective. However, expenses and side effects of these agents have also been a concern for clinical doctors. The aim for this prospective study was to find an agent that is cost effective and side effect free (or at least with a low incidence of side effects) for the prevention of PONV. METHODS A total of 700 adult surgical patients who planned to have surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled in this double-blinded, randomized and placebo-controlled study. Group P received the placebo (0.9% normal saline 2 ml) and Group D received 10 mg dexamethasone intravenously right before the induction of anesthesia. RESULTS We found that during the postoperative period of 1-8 h, patients in Group D reported a lower incidence of PONV (24%) than those in Group P (39%, p < 0.001). Patients in Group D also requested less rescue anti-emetic (17%) than those in Group P (30%, p < 0.05). The same phenomenon was also noted in the 8-to-24-hour interval (PONV 4% vs. 12%, p < 0.05 and rescue anti-emetic 3% vs. 9%, p < 0.05 in Group D vs. Group P, respectively.) CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the prophylactic intravenous administration of 10 mg dexamethasone immediately before the induction of anesthesia is effective in preventing PONV in the general surgical adult patient population.

Abstract
Metallic wire expandable stents are increasingly used to alleviate tracheal obstruction due to malignancies. Patients usually tolerate these stents well and benefit from good to excellent palliation of their symptoms. Nevertheless, some miserable complications have also come to our notice. We report here an unfortunate case in whom severe bilateral main bronchial obstruction occurred immediately after the insertion of a Wall-stent over the tracheal stenosis.

Abstract
This paper presents a method for rendering radially distorted virtual scenes in real-time using the programmable fragment shader commonly found in many main stream graphics hardware. We show that by using the pixel buffer and the fragment shader, it is possible to augment the endoscopic display with distorted virtual images.

Abstract
The high catalytic activity of gold clusters on oxides has been attributed to structural effects (including particle thickness and shape and metal oxidation state), as well as to support effects. We have created well-ordered gold mono-layers and bilayers that completely wet (cover) the oxide support, thus eliminating particle shape and direct support effects. High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and carbon monoxide adsorption confirm that the gold atoms are bonded to titanium atoms. Kinetic measurements for the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide show that the gold bilayer structure is significantly more active (by more than an order of magnitude) than the monolayer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To study a new surgical option of primary placement of a titanium sleeve into hydroxyapatite implants during enucleation or evisceration. METHODS A standard enucleation or cornea preserved evisceration was performed, followed by preplacement of a titanium sleeve into the hydroxyapatite implant by a hand drill sleeve driver. Care must be taken to ensure that the titanium sleeve is positioned centrally when the implant is put inside the orbital socket or eviscerated shell. The Tenon capsule and conjunctiva were meticulously closed with minimal tension. Complications such as sleeve exposure, coralline exposure, and infection of the titanium sleeve were closely observed. RESULTS In all, 30 patients were treated in the above fashion with 10 enucleation and 20 evisceration procedures. The follow-up period ranged from 9 to 24 months. Three of the sleeves were found to have exposed spontaneously at 5 and 7 weeks following original surgery. They had no further complication except one sleeve loosening. The remaining 27 sleeves that did not spontaneously expose pursued secondary exposure of the titanium sleeve and peg insertion by conjunctival cutdown procedure 3 months after original surgery. Two sleeves were found to be oblique positioned after the conjunctival cutdown procedure. Fortunately, all the 30 patients were successfully fit with a peg-coupled prosthesis with good motility. CONCLUSION Primary placement of a titanium sleeve into hydroxyapatite implants has several advantages, including high patient acceptance, technical simplicity, and office-based conjunctival cutdown pegging procedure. By avoiding the expense of postoperative imaging study and additional prosthetic modification, a more rapid and efficient rehabilitation is possible.
