Investigating the effects of postural habits and awareness on early adolescent's internet addiction levels

OBJECTIVES

Early adolescence is a period of growth and development determined by the onset of puberty, during which important changes in psychological development and social roles occur. Excessive use of the internet, especially in adolescents in this period, causes health problems such as postural disorders, vision problems, sedentary life, and unbalanced nutrition. When the studies are analyzed, it is observed that postural disorders are observed in children and adolescents. This study was planned to investigate the effect of postural habits and awareness on the level of internet addiction in early adolescents.

METHODS

Physical characteristics of the participants (age, height, weight, gender, body mass index) were recorded. Duration and purpose of internet use and internet addiction were determined with the Young Internet Addiction Test-Short Form, body composition sensitivity level with the Body Awareness Questionnaire, and postural awareness with the Postural Habit and Awareness Scale.

RESULTS

There was a significant positive correlation between internet addiction and duration of internet use (r=0.466) (p=0.000). In addition, there was no relationship between internet usage time and body awareness (r=-0.117) (p=0.084) and postural awareness and habit (r=-0.017) (p=0.798). When internet addiction was compared with body awareness, a significant relationship was found in the opposite direction (r=-0.145) (p=0.031). When internet addiction was compared with postural awareness and habit, a positive relationship was found (r=0.190) (p=0.005).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study showed that internet addiction negatively affects body awareness, and does not affect postural habits, but positively affects postural awareness.

Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the patellofemoral pain severity scale in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to investigate the Turkish validity and reliability of the Patellofemoral Pain Severity Scale (PSS) in patients with patellofemoral pain (PFP) and to adapt it to Turkish.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A pilot study was conducted with 10 patients. 123 patients underwent PSS test-retest at 24-48 h intervals. Construct validity, correlations of PSS with other scales Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), Stair Climbing and Descending Test (SCD), Anterior Knee Pain Scale (AKPS), Tegner Activity Scale (TAS), Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (LDSS), Knee Outcome Survey Activities of Daily Living Scale (KOS-ADL) were evaluated.

RESULTS

The content validity index value of the scale was 0.95. The overall internal consistency (Cronbach α: 0.88) was high. Item-total correlations of the scale were between 0.51 and 0.7. In the evaluation of the convergent validity of the PSS, it was found that there was a positive correlation between the PSSS and TUG and SCD, and a negative correlation between the PSS, TAS, LDSS and KOS-ADL (p = 0.000).

CONCLUSIONS

In this study, it was determined that the PSSS scale had good internal consistency, test-retest validity and adequate construct validity when compared with the KOS-ADL, LDSS and AKPS.

Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale in patients with different lower limb musculoskeletal dysfunctions

Background/Aims

Lower extremity functional scales in Turkish are limited in number and generalisability. The aims of this study were to translate the Lower Extremity Functional Scale into Turkish, and to investigate its reliability and validity in patients with different musculoskeletal conditions in their lower extremities.

Methods

The Turkish Lower Extremity Functional Scale, Visual Analogue Scale and Timed Up and Go test were administered in 256 outpatients with a re-test after 24–48 hours. Internal consistency, test–retest reliability, construct validity, factor structure and floor-ceiling effects were investigated.

Findings

The Scale has good reliability and validity. The Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.91 and intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.923. The standard error of measurement value was 4.015 and internal consistency coefficient was 0.92. Item-total correlation values were 0.46–0.74. It had a 3-factor structure, explaining 58.51% of the total variance and the eigenvalues were 1.04–8.26. It had no floor and ceiling effects, and was negatively correlated with the Visual Analogue Scale and Timed Up and Go test (P=0.000).

Conclusions

The Turkish Lower Extremity Functional Scale is a reliable and valid tool to be used in participants with lower extremity musculoskeletal dysfunctions. Evaluation of its responsiveness and minimal clinically important difference in future studies would have a great value.

Oxidative and antioxidative status in the endometrium of patients with benign gynecological disorders

AIM

Oxidative stress and impaired antioxidative system are implicated in the development of many disease states including gynecological diseases. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the oxidative-antioxidative status in endometrium of patients diagnosed with benign gynecological disorders.

METHODS

Samples of endometria and blood were obtained from 65 patients admitted to our center for abnormal uterine bleeding or postmenopausal bleeding. Endometrial biopsy was performed for the evaluation of histopathology and oxidative-antioxidative status in endometrial tissue. Based on histological examination, subjects were divided into groups as follows: normal controls (n=15); patients with endometrial polyps (n=20); patients with uterine myoma (n=10) patients with chronic endometritis (n=10), and patients with atrophic endometrium (n=10). Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and total antioxidant status (TOS), total oxidant status (TAS) were assessed.

RESULTS

Compared to the normal controls, nonsignificant changes (decrease or increase) were detected in antioxidant enzyme activities, TAS and TOS in the examined groups. Additionally, between TAS and TOS, we also found a strong positive correlation in normal and chronic endomethritis groups and a moderate positive correlation uterine myoma, endometrial polyps and endometrial atrophy groups.

CONCLUSION

Even though, our results do not allow to conclude how oxidative and antioxidative status are influenced in benign gynecological disorders, these findings may provide a basis for the further researches.
