AusTraits, a curated plant trait database for the Australian flora

We introduce the AusTraits database - a compilation of values of plant traits for taxa in the Australian flora (hereafter AusTraits). AusTraits synthesises data on 448 traits across 28,640 taxa from field campaigns, published literature, taxonomic monographs, and individual taxon descriptions. Traits vary in scope from physiological measures of performance (e.g. photosynthetic gas exchange, water-use efficiency) to morphological attributes (e.g. leaf area, seed mass, plant height) which link to aspects of ecological variation. AusTraits contains curated and harmonised individual- and species-level measurements coupled to, where available, contextual information on site properties and experimental conditions. This article provides information on version 3.0.2 of AusTraits which contains data for 997,808 trait-by-taxon combinations. We envision AusTraits as an ongoing collaborative initiative for easily archiving and sharing trait data, which also provides a template for other national or regional initiatives globally to fill persistent gaps in trait knowledge.

The importance of farmers' perceptions of salinity and adaptation strategies for ensuring food security: Evidence from the coastal rice growing areas of Bangladesh

Coastal salinity causes substantial adverse impacts on agricultural productivity and food security. Farmers' choice of salinity adaptation strategies might depend on how they perceive the problem. This research examined rice farmers' perceptions of salinity, adaptation strategies, and its implications for policy initiatives to sustain rice production in the affected coastal areas of Bangladesh. Boro rice growers (n = 109) randomly selected from two coastal sub-districts were interviewed using a semi-structured survey. Awareness of salinity and its increase over the past 20 years was widespread among rice farmers. A high proportion of farmers (90%) perceived the reproductive (e.g. booting, heading, and flowering) stages of the rice plant as the most sensitive to salinity problems. Salinity (ECe) was measured in the farmers' fields and were categorized according to farmers' perceptions and scientific interpretation (e.g. high or low). Farmers perceived a field affected by high salinity at a lower EC reading than the scientific interpretation of the salinity level. Most of the farmers (67%) were undertaking early transplanting and applying irrigation in order to adapt to salinity problems which occur later in rice crop growth during Boro season. Thus, farmers' actions demonstrated that their perceptions of salinity and adaptation responses were pre-emptive of when salinity was most likely to have an impact on the rice crop. Farmers' perceptions of salinization and measures to manage salinity need to be considered in research prioritization and policy formulation by the government. This action could potentially secure rice production and thus contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-1, 2 and 3).

Measurements of δ13C in CH4 and using particle dispersion modeling to characterize sources of Arctic methane within an air mass

A stratified air mass enriched in methane (CH4) was sampled at ~600 m to ~2000 m altitude, between the north coast of Norway and Svalbard as part of the Methane in the Arctic: Measurements and Modelling campaign on board the UK's BAe-146-301 Atmospheric Research Aircraft. The approach used here, which combines interpretation of multiple tracers with transport modeling, enables better understanding of the emission sources that contribute to the background mixing ratios of CH4 in the Arctic. Importantly, it allows constraints to be placed on the location and isotopic bulk signature of the emission source(s). Measurements of δ13C in CH4 in whole air samples taken while traversing the air mass identified that the source(s) had a strongly depleted bulk δ13C CH4 isotopic signature of -70 (±2.1)‰. Combined Numerical Atmospheric-dispersion Modeling Environment and inventory analysis indicates that the air mass was recently in the planetary boundary layer over northwest Russia and the Barents Sea, with the likely dominant source of methane being from wetlands in that region.

Safety and efficacy of target controlled infusion (Diprifusor) vs manually controlled infusion of propofol for anaesthesia

In this multi-centre, randomized trial, we compared the safety and efficacy of Diprifusor TCI with manually controlled infusion (MCI) of propofol for anaesthesia. With approval, 123 adult male and female patients were studied. Firstly, each investigator anaesthetized five patients to familiarize themselves with Diprifusor TCI. In Stage 2, 98 patients were randomized to receive propofol-based anaesthesia via TCI or MCI. Adjuvant drugs, airway management and monitoring were managed at the discretion of the anaesthetist. Results are presented as mean (SD). Induction times were significantly longer [67 (32) vs 54 (17)s] and induction doses were significantly lower [14 (5) vs 16 (4) ml] in the TCI vs the MCI group. Recovery times and total doses were not significantly different. There were statistically but not clinically significant differences in mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate. Quality of anaesthesia and ease of control of anaesthesia were similar. We conclude that Diprifusor TCI and MCI are similar in terms of safety and efficacy.

Low-temperature damage and subsequent recovery of fab1 mutant Arabidopsis exposed to 2 degrees C

The fab1 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, which contains increased levels of saturated fatty acids, was indistinguishable from the wild type when it was grown at 22 or 12 degrees C. During the first 7 to 10 d after transfer to 2 degrees C, the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of the fab1 plants remained indistinguishable from the wild type, with values for the potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II decreasing from 0.8 to 0.7 in plants of both lines. Whereas wild-type plants maintained quantum efficiency of photosystem II at approximately 0.7 for at least 35 d at 2 degrees C, this parameter declined rapidly in the mutant after 7 d and reached a value of less than 0.1 after 28 d at 2 degrees C. This decline in photosynthetic capacity was accompanied by reductions in chlorophyll content and the amount of chloroplast glycerolipids per gram of leaf. Electron microscopic examination of leaf samples revealed a rapid and extensive disruption of the thylakoid and chloroplast structure in the mutant, which is interpreted here as a form of selective autophagy. Despite the almost complete loss of photosynthetic function and the destruction of photosynthetic machinery, fab1 plants retained a substantial capacity for recovery following transfer to 22 degrees C. These results provide a further demonstration of the importance of chloroplast membrane unsaturation to the proper growth and development of plants at low temperature.

Fluxes through the prokaryotic and eukaryotic pathways of lipid synthesis in the '16:3' plant Arabidopsis thaliana

The kinetics of [1-14C]acetate incorporation in Arabidopsis thaliana L. (Heyn) showed almost equal labelling of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and diacylgalactosylglycerol (DGG) at early times and the transfer of radioactivity from PC to DGG and diacyldigalactosylglycerol (DDG) at longer times. These kinetics demonstrated the parallel operation of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic pathways of lipid synthesis [Roughan & Slack (1982) Annu. Rev. Plant Physiol. 33, 97-132] in this tissue. At 2 h after the application of [1-14C]acetate, more than 85% of the radioactivity at the sn-2 position of each chloroplast lipid was in 16-carbon fatty acids. However, after 60 h, molecular species containing labelled C18 fatty acids at position sn-2 and presumably derived from microsomal PC made a large contribution (20-70%) to each chloroplast lipid except phosphatidylglycerol. These findings are consistent with the contention that the chain length of the fatty acid at the sn-2 position of glycerol is an accurate predictor of whether a particular lipid molecule has been synthesized by the prokaryotic or eukaryotic pathway. At 30 min after the start of [1-14C]acetate labelling, only 12.3% of the radioactivity in PC was in saturated fatty acids, but the proportion increased steadily to 24.3% after 142 h. It is suggested that steps involved in the conversion of PC to chloroplast lipids on the eukaryotic pathway discriminate against palmitate-containing species. The step involved does not appear to be transfer of PC to the chloroplast because extrachloroplastic and chloroplast membranes purified from Arabidopsis mesophyll protoplasts each contained PC with a fatty acid composition similar to that of the same lipid from leaves. Positional analysis of unlabelled lipids, together with the information summarized above, is used to construct a quantitative scheme of the fluxes through the prokaryotic and eukaryotic pathways during lipid synthesis in Arabidopsis. This scheme shows that 38% of the fatty acids synthesized de novo in the chloroplast enter the prokaryotic pathway in the chloroplast envelope. Of the 62% which are exported as acyl-CoA species to enter the eukaryotic pathway, 56% (34% of the total) are returned to complete synthesis of the chloroplast's complement of glycerolipids.

Terminations of treatment with gold sodium thiomalate in rheumatoid arthritis

Treatment terminations with gold sodium thiomalate (GST) in 200 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were analyzed using the life table method. The termination rate was 27% at 6 months, 48% at 12 months and 84% at 48 months. The major reason for termination was mucocutaneous reaction. Pretreatment clinical and laboratory status of the RA did not influence terminations significantly. Concurrent administration of oral corticosteroids had no significant effect on gold terminations. Complete control of synovitis was achieved in 38% of patients by a median time of 6 months but sustained for greater than 12 months in only 19%.
