Giant Pressure Dependence and Dimensionality Switching in a Metal-Organic Quantum Antiferromagnet

We report an extraordinary pressure dependence of the magnetic interactions in the metal-organic system [CuF_{2}(H_{2}O)_{2}]_{2}pyrazine. At zero pressure, this material realizes a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. By high-pressure, high-field susceptibility measurements we show that the dominant exchange parameter is reduced continuously by a factor of 2 on compression. Above 18 kbar, a phase transition occurs, inducing an orbital re-ordering that switches the dimensionality, transforming the quasi-two-dimensional lattice into weakly coupled chains. We explain the microscopic mechanisms for both phenomena by combining detailed x-ray and neutron diffraction studies with quantitative modeling using spin-polarized density functional theory.

Pauling Entropy, Metastability, and Equilibrium in Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} Spin Ice

Determining the fate of the Pauling entropy in the classical spin ice material Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} with respect to the third law of thermodynamics has become an important test case for understanding the existence and stability of ice-rule states in general. The standard model of spin ice-the dipolar spin ice model-predicts an ordering transition at T≈0.15  K, but recent experiments by Pomaranski et al. suggest an entropy recovery over long timescales at temperatures as high as 0.5 K, much too high to be compatible with the theory. Using neutron scattering and specific heat measurements at low temperatures and with long timescales (0.35  K/10^{6}  s and 0.5  K/10^{5}  s, respectively) on several isotopically enriched samples, we find no evidence of a reduction of ice-rule correlations or spin entropy. High-resolution simulations of the neutron structure factor show that the spin correlations remain well described by the dipolar spin ice model at all temperatures. Furthermore, by careful consideration of hyperfine contributions, we conclude that the original entropy measurements of Ramirez et al. are, after all, essentially correct: The short-time relaxation method used in that study gives a reasonably accurate estimate of the equilibrium spin ice entropy due to a cancellation of contributions.

Dipolar Spin Ice States with a Fast Monopole Hopping Rate in CdEr_{2}X_{4} (X=Se, S)

Excitations in a spin ice behave as magnetic monopoles, and their population and mobility control the dynamics of a spin ice at low temperature. CdEr_{2}Se_{4} is reported to have the Pauling entropy characteristic of a spin ice, but its dynamics are three orders of magnitude faster than the canonical spin ice Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}. In this Letter we use diffuse neutron scattering to show that both CdEr_{2}Se_{4} and CdEr_{2}S_{4} support a dipolar spin ice state-the host phase for a Coulomb gas of emergent magnetic monopoles. These Coulomb gases have similar parameters to those in Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}, i.e., dilute and uncorrelated, and so cannot provide three orders faster dynamics through a larger monopole population alone. We investigate the monopole dynamics using ac susceptometry and neutron spin echo spectroscopy, and verify the crystal electric field Hamiltonian of the Er^{3+} ions using inelastic neutron scattering. A quantitative calculation of the monopole hopping rate using our Coulomb gas and crystal electric field parameters shows that the fast dynamics in CdEr_{2}X_{4} (X=Se, S) are primarily due to much faster monopole hopping. Our work suggests that CdEr_{2}X_{4} offer the possibility to study alternative spin ice ground states and dynamics, with equilibration possible at much lower temperatures than the rare earth pyrochlore examples.

Temperature- and Pressure-Induced Spin Crossover in Co1+xCr2-xSe4 (x = 0.24): A Diffraction Study

The Co(2+) ions of the Co1+xCr2-xSe4 phase (Co1.24Cr1.76Se4 composition with x = 0.24, C2/m space group, Cr3S4-type structure) undergo a high- to low-spin-state transition around 230 K, as concluded from the temperature-dependent single-crystal synchrotron radiation diffraction experiments and the previously reported physical property studies. The change of the spin state is not instantaneous and goes through a wide spin-crossover (SCO) region of 75 K. A similar Co(2+) high- to low-spin-state transition is suggested at a pressure of 14.5 GPa, as is evident from the pressure-dependent single-crystal synchrotron radiation diffraction experiments. The corresponding SCO region is equal to 5 GPa, and the structural behavior is different from the one observed during the temperature-dependent transition. Coupling between the spin-conversion process in Co1+xCr2-xSe4 and the concomitant changes in the physical properties opens a way for a controlled tuning of the observed physical response through compositional and structural modifications.

Spin-stripe phase in a frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain

Motifs of periodic modulations are encountered in a variety of natural systems, where at least two rival states are present. In strongly correlated electron systems, such behaviour has typically been associated with competition between short- and long-range interactions, for example, between exchange and dipole-dipole interactions in the case of ferromagnetic thin films. Here we show that spin-stripe textures may develop also in antiferromagnets, where long-range dipole-dipole magnetic interactions are absent. A comprehensive analysis of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat and neutron diffraction measurements unveils β-TeVO4 as a nearly perfect realization of a frustrated (zigzag) ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Notably, a narrow spin-stripe phase develops at elevated magnetic fields due to weak frustrated short-range interchain exchange interactions, possibly assisted by the symmetry-allowed electric polarization. This concept provides an alternative route for the stripe formation in strongly correlated electron systems and may help understanding of other widespread, yet still elusive, stripe-related phenomena.

Magnetoelastic excitations in the pyrochlore spin liquid Tb2Ti2O7

At low temperatures, Tb2Ti2O7 enters a spin liquid state, despite expectations of magnetic order and/or a structural distortion. Using neutron scattering, we have discovered that in this spin liquid state an excited crystal field level is coupled to a transverse acoustic phonon, forming a hybrid excitation. Magnetic and phononlike branches with identical dispersion relations can be identified, and the hybridization vanishes in the paramagnetic state. We suggest that Tb2Ti2O7 is aptly named a "magnetoelastic spin liquid" and that the hybridization of the excitations suppresses both magnetic ordering and the structural distortion. The spin liquid phase of Tb2Ti2O7 can now be regarded as a Coulomb phase with propagating bosonic spin excitations.

Persistent spin dynamics intrinsic to amplitude-modulated long-range magnetic order

An incommensurate elliptical helical magnetic structure in the frustrated coupled-spin-chain system FeTe(2)O(5)Br is surprisingly found to persist down to 53(3) mK (T/T(N)~1/200), according to neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. In this state, finite spin fluctuations at T→0 are evidenced by muon depolarization, which is in agreement with specific-heat data indicating the presence of both gapless and gapped excitations. We thus show that the amplitude-modulated magnetic order intrinsically accommodates contradictory persistent spin dynamics and long-range order and can serve as a model structure to investigate their coexistence.

Coupling of magnetic and ferroelectric hysteresis by a multicomponent magnetic structure in Mn2GeO4

The olivine compound Mn(2)GeO(4) is shown to feature both a ferroelectric polarization and a ferromagnetic magnetization that are directly coupled and point along the same direction. We show that a spin spiral generates ferroelectricity, and a canted commensurate order leads to weak ferromagnetism. Symmetry suggests that the direct coupling between the ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is mediated by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that exist only in the ferroelectric phase, controlling both the sense of the spiral rotation and the canting of the commensurate structure. Our study demonstrates how multicomponent magnetic structures found in magnetically frustrated materials like Mn(2)GeO(4) provide a new route towards functional materials that exhibit coupled ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity.

Incommensurate magnetic order in TbTe3

We report a neutron diffraction study of the magnetic phase transitions in the charge-density wave (CDW) TbTe(3) compound. We discover that in the paramagnetic phase there are strong 2D-like magnetic correlations, consistent with the pronounced anisotropy of the chemical structure. A long-range incommensurate magnetic order emerges in TbTe(3) at T(mag1) = 5.78 K as a result of continuous phase transitions. We observe that near the temperature T(mag1) the magnetic Bragg peaks appear around the position (0, 0, 0.24) (or its rational multiples), that is fairly close to the propagation vector (0,0,0.29) associated with the CDW phase transition in TbTe(3). This suggests that correlations leading to the long-range magnetic order in TbTe(3) are linked to the modulations that occur in the CDW state.

Magnetic structure of CuCrO₂: a single crystal neutron diffraction study

This paper presents results of a recent study of multiferroic CuCrO(2) by means of single crystal neutron diffraction. This system has two close magnetic phase transitions at T(N) = 24.2 K and T(mf) = 23.6 K. The low temperature magnetic structure below T(mf) is unambiguously determined to be a fully three-dimensional proper screw. Between T(N) and T(mf) antiferromagnetic order is found that is essentially two-dimensional. In this narrow temperature range, magnetic near neighbor correlations are still long range in the (H,K) plane, whereas nearest neighbors along the L direction are uncorrelated. Thus, the multiferroic state is realized only in the low temperature three-dimensional state and not in the two-dimensional state.

The magnetic structure of multiferroic BaMnF4

The multiferroic material BaMnF(4) has been investigated with unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction. The structure has been shown to be antiferromagnetic. The magnetic moments are aligned at 12° to the b direction in the bc plane, 3° different from the previously determined value. The ferromagnetic component that is indicative of the linear magnetoelectric effect was not observed.

Diffuse scattering from the lead-based relaxor ferroelectric PbMg1/3Ta2/3O3

The relaxor ferroelectric PbMg1/3Ta2/3O3was studied by single-crystal neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and its detailed atomic structure modelled in terms of static Pb displacements that lead to the formation of polar nanoregions. Similar to the other members of the Pb-based relaxor family like PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3or PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3the diffuse scattering in the [H00]/[0K0] scattering plane has a butterfly shape around theh00 Bragg reflections and is orthogonal to the scattering vector forhh0 peaks. In the [HH0]/[00L] plane the diffuse scattering is elongated along the 〈112〉 directions and is orthogonal to the scattering vector forhhhreflections. It is found that a model consisting of correlated Pb displacements along the 〈111〉 directions reproduces adequately the main features of the diffuse scattering in PbMg1/3Ta2/3O3when the correlation lengths between the Pb-ion displacement vectors are longest along the 〈111〉 and shortest along the 〈11{\overline 2}〉 and 〈1{\overline 1}0〉 directions.

Ni3TeO6--a collinear antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic honeycomb planes

We report a comprehensive study of magnetic properties of Ni(3)TeO(6). The system crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric rhombohedral lattice, space group R3. There are three differently coordinated Ni atoms in the unit cell. Two of them form an almost planar honeycomb lattice, while the third one is placed between the layers. Magnetization and specific heat measurements revealed a single magnetic ordering at T(N) = 52 K. Below T(N) the susceptibility with the magnetic field parallel to the c axis drops towards zero while the perpendicular susceptibility remains constant, a characteristic of antiferromagnetic materials. Neutron diffraction confirmed that the system is antiferromagnet below T(N) with ferromagnetic ab planes stacked antiferromagnetically along the c axis. All Ni moments are in the S = 1 spin state and point along the c axis.

Spin amplitude modulation driven magnetoelectric coupling in the new multiferroic FeTe2O5Br

The magnetic and ferroelectric properties of the layered geometrically frustrated cluster compound FeTe2O5Br were investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction and dielectric measurements. An incommensurate transverse amplitude modulated magnetic order with the wave vector q=(1/2,0.463,0) develops below T(N)=10.6(2) K. Simultaneously, a ferroelectric order due to exchange striction involving polarizable Te4+ lone-pair electrons develops perpendicular to q and to Fe3+ magnetic moments. The observed magnetoelectric coupling is proposed to originate from the temperature dependent phase difference between neighboring amplitude modulation waves.

Anomalous magnetic excitations of cooperative tetrahedral spin clusters

An inelastic neutron scattering study of Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl, Br) shows strong dispersive modes with large energy gaps persisting far above TN, notably in Cu2Te2O5Br2. The anomalous features: a coexisting unusually weak Goldstone-like mode observed in Cu2Te2O5Cl2 and the size of the energy gaps cannot be explained by existing theories, such as our mean-field or random-phase approximation. We argue that our findings represent a new general type of behavior due to intercluster quantum fluctuations and call for development of a new theoretical approach.

Orbital dynamics of the 4f shell in DyB2C2

For the first time, fluctuations in the Dy quadrupole (orbital) moment have been observed in DyB(2)C(2) using inelastic neutron scattering. The observed quasielastic response is decomposed into two components, one reflecting transitions within the doublets (narrow) and the other transitions between the doublets (broad) of the effective Dy quartet ground state. The widths of the narrow and broad components are shown to arise from fluctuations in the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole moments, respectively.

Temperature and field dependence of the order parameter in the antiferroquadrupolar phase of CeB6 from mu+ Knight shift measurements

The Fermi contact hyperfine contribution to the Knight shift of positive muons, implanted at the interstitial 3d sites in CeB6, is found to exhibit the same temperature dependence below T(Q) in phase II as the quadrupolar order parameter determined from resonant and nonresonant x-ray scattering. Furthermore, the contact coupling parameter is shown to be anisotropic and field dependent. These unanticipated features are interpreted to arise from the RKKY induced conduction electron spin polarization, which depends on the orientation and expectation value of the ordered 4f quadrupole moments.

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in Cu2Te2O5X2 (X = Cl,Br) studied by neutron diffraction

We present the results of the first neutron powder and single crystal diffraction studies of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems Cu2Te2O5X2 (X = Cl,Br). Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vectors kCl approximately [0.150,0.422,1/2], kBr approximately [0.158,0.354,1/2] sets in below TN = 18 K for X = Cl and 11 K for X = Br. No simple collinear antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic spin arrangements within Cu2+ tetrahedra fit these observations. Fitting the diffraction data to more complex but physically reasonable models with multiple helices leads to a moment of 0.67(1)microB/Cu2+ at 1.5 K for the Cl compound. The reason for such a complex ground state may be geometrical frustration of the spins due to the intratetrahedral and intertetrahedral couplings having similar strengths. In neither compound has any evidence for a structural transition accompanying the magnetic ordering been found.

Neutron scattering study of the field-dependent ground state and the spin dynamics in spin-one-half NH4CuCl3

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on the dimer spin system NH4CuCl3, which shows plateaus in the magnetization curve at m=1/4 and m=3/4 of the saturation value. Two structural phase transitions at T1 approximately 156 K and at T(2)=70 K lead to a doubling of the crystallographic unit cell along the b direction and as a consequence a segregation into different dimer subsystems. Long-range magnetic ordering is reported below T(N)=1.3 K. The magnetic field dependence of the excitation spectrum identifies successive quantum phase transitions of the dimer subsystems as the driving mechanism for the unconventional magnetization process in agreement with a recent theoretical model.

Direct evidence for an intrinsic square vortex lattice in the overdoped high- T(c) superconductor La(1.83)Sr(0.17)CuO(4+delta)

We report here the first direct observations of a well ordered vortex lattice in the bulk of a La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+delta) single crystal (slightly overdoped, x = 0.17). Our small angle neutron scattering investigation of the mixed phase reveals a crossover from triangular to square coordination with increasing magnetic field. The existence of an intrinsic square vortex lattice has never been observed in high-temperature superconductors and is indicative of the coupling of the vortex lattice to a source of anisotropy, such as those provided by a d-wave order parameter or the presence of stripes.
