Advancing air quality monitoring: A low-cost sensor network in motion - Part I

In urban areas, high levels of air pollution pose significant risks to human health, emphasising the need for detailed air quality (AQ) monitoring. However, traditional AQ monitoring relies on the data from Reference Monitoring Stations, which are sparsely distributed and provide only hourly or daily data, failing to capture the spatial and temporal variability of air pollutant concentrations. Addressing this challenge, we introduce in this article the ExpoLIS system, an all-weather mobile AQ monitoring system that integrates various AQ low-cost sensors (LCSs), providing high spatio-temporal resolution data. This study demonstrates that the inclusion of an extended sampling device may mitigate the effect of the meteorological parameters and other disturbances on readings. At the same time, it did not reduce the quality of the data, both in static conditions and in motion, as we were able to maintain a certain level of agreement between the LCSs. In conclusion, the ExpoLIS system proves its versatility by enabling the collection of large quantities of accurate data, allowing a deeper understanding of the AQ dynamics in urban environments.

A Low-Cost Sensor System Installed in Buses to Monitor Air Quality in Cities

Air pollution is an important source of morbidity and mortality. It is essential to understand to what levels of air pollution citizens are exposed, especially in urban areas. Low-cost sensors are an easy-to-use option to obtain real-time air quality (AQ) data, provided that they go through specific quality control procedures. This paper evaluates the reliability of the ExpoLIS system. This system is composed of sensor nodes installed in buses, and a Health Optimal Routing Service App to inform the commuters about their exposure, dose, and the transport's emissions. A sensor node, including a particulate matter (PM) sensor (Alphasense OPC-N3), was evaluated in laboratory conditions and at an AQ monitoring station. In laboratory conditions (approximately constant temperature and humidity conditions), the PM sensor obtained excellent correlations (R²≈1) against the reference equipment. At the monitoring station, the OPC-N3 showed considerable data dispersion. After several corrections based on the k-Köhler theory and Multiple Regression Analysis, the deviation was reduced and the correlation with the reference improved. Finally, the ExpoLIS system was installed, leading to the production of AQ maps with high spatial and temporal resolution, and to the demonstration of the Health Optimal Routing Service App as a valuable tool.

Using Rapid Chlorophyll Fluorescence Transients to Classify Vitis Genotypes

When a dark-adapted leaf is illuminated with saturating light, a fast polyphasic rise of fluorescence emission (Kautsky effect) is observed. The shape of the curve is dependent on the molecular organization of the photochemical apparatus, which in turn is a function of the interaction between genotype and environment. In this paper, we evaluate the potential of rapid fluorescence transients, aided by machine learning techniques, to classify plant genotypes. We present results of the application of several machine learning algorithms (k-nearest neighbors, decision trees, artificial neural networks, genetic programming) to rapid induction curves recorded in different species and cultivars of vine grown in the same environmental conditions. The phylogenetic relations between the selected Vitis species and Vitis vinifera cultivars were established with molecular markers. Both neural networks (71.8%) and genetic programming (75.3%) presented much higher global classification success rates than k-nearest neighbors (58.5%) or decision trees (51.6%), genetic programming performing slightly better than neural networks. However, compared with a random classifier (success rate = 14%), even the less successful algorithms were good at the task of classifying. The use of rapid fluorescence transients, handled by genetic programming, for rapid preliminary classification of Vitis genotypes is foreseen as feasible.

Hospital-at-Home for Advanced Cancer Patients within the Framework of the Bologna Eubiosia Project: An Evaluation

Aims and background

An evaluation of the Bologna Hospital-at-Home (BHH) was undertaken to examine the following aspects: 1) median daily costs of the BHH; 2) delivery of medical services; 3) patient satisfaction with the care received and frequency of requests for transfer to the alternative setting. Delivery of services and patient's satisfaction in the BHH were compared with data collected for a traditional hospital (Ospedale Sant'Orsola Malpighi, Bologna - OSM).

Methods

Our analysis was performed as a cost analysis considering two periods of time in 1992 and 1993/94. Included were direct and indirect costs; no intangible costs were found. The patient's perspective was selected for the analysis. The observational study examining delivery of service and quality of life of patients admitted to the two care settings, BHH and OSM, considered patient's clinical history and an interview conducted by the evaluation team 6 weeks after admission to either facility. Data included patient's characteristics, quantity of diagnostic and therapeutic measures, circumstances of life, satisfaction with the care received, and intention for transfer to the alternative setting of nursing. The statistical significance of our assumption of comparable care intensity and better patient quality of life in the BHH was tested by the Pearson Chi-square test.

Results

A survey was carried out of 236 patients treated in the BHH or the OSM. The setting of assistance did not influence the provision of services. The time of “talking to the doctor” was notably higher for BHH than for OSM patients. The analysis of satisfaction showed that 98% of the surveyed BHH patients believed it matched the actual needs. The quality of life was considered to be reduced/bad in 67% of the OSM patients but in only 51% of BHH patients. An opinion was also requested with regard to transfer to the alternative setting of nursing: 47% of OSM patients judged BHH care would be better than traditional hospital. The median daily costs in BHH reached 118,789 Lire (range, 108,569-129,027 Lire, depending on performance status).

Conclusions

Although the economic advantage of hospital-at-home care certainly is important, we would like to stress that better quality and dignity of life should be the main point supporting the idea of hospital-at-home care.

Novelty-Driven Cooperative Coevolution

Cooperative coevolutionary algorithms (CCEAs) rely on multiple coevolving populations for the evolution of solutions composed of coadapted components. CCEAs enable, for instance, the evolution of cooperative multiagent systems composed of heterogeneous agents, where each agent is modelled as a component of the solution. Previous works have, however, shown that CCEAs are biased toward stability: the evolutionary process tends to converge prematurely to stable states instead of (near-)optimal solutions. In this study, we show how novelty search can be used to avoid the counterproductive attraction to stable states in coevolution. Novelty search is an evolutionary technique that drives evolution toward behavioural novelty and diversity rather than exclusively pursuing a static objective. We evaluate three novelty-based approaches that rely on, respectively (1) the novelty of the team as a whole, (2) the novelty of the agents' individual behaviour, and (3) the combination of the two. We compare the proposed approaches with traditional fitness-driven cooperative coevolution in three simulated multirobot tasks. Our results show that team-level novelty scoring is the most effective approach, significantly outperforming fitness-driven coevolution at multiple levels. Novelty-driven cooperative coevolution can substantially increase the potential of CCEAs while maintaining a computational complexity that scales well with the number of populations.

New challenges and old problems: end of life care and the dilemma of prognostic accuracy

Dignity of the natural end of life for everybody is one of the new great challenges of medicine and social care for the beginning 21st century. However, many end of life care providing doctors are confused about how to categorize the help they give. One of the central problems is predicting the life expectancy of an individual patient. Difficulties in this field can become ethical dilemmas when physicians are obliged to predict accurately a patient's prognosis as the basis for a certain care strategy. Clinical estimation of the duration of life for patients with end of life cancer needs experience and training. Education programmes in the field should include this topic much more until now. Prognosis should be based more on proven indices and less on intuition. However, there is no doubt that daily clinical practice limits the use of highly sophisticated computer-based score models. Even maximal accuracy of prognosis will not exclude the risk of errors in a great part of patients. This limits their classification in care categories too strictly defined. Health care systems should avoid models for care with standards and budgets based on prognostic estimates and the medical community should avoid claim by disciplines of certain categories of patients defined by their prognoses. What we need is a network of assistance for incurable patients with single parts defined by patients needs and not by predicted life expectancy. Separating palliative and terminal care is artificial and often in contrast to the needs of the patients.

[Home hospital for advanced stage cancer patients: costs and benefits]

15,290 patients have been treated in the Bologna home hospital (BHH) until June 30, 1996. The average daily costs in BHH were estimated as 118789 Liras (ranging from 108 569-129027 Lire depending on the nursing category). Care intensity and patient's quality of life in the BHH are high. 98% of patients were content with the setting in which they were nursed. A questionnaire on the degree of satisfaction with the care was completed by 134 BHH patients and 102 patients of Division Oncologia Medica. Azienda Ospedaliera Sant, Orsola Malpighi, Bologna. Satisfaction with respect to sleeping, meals and family communications was expressed more often by BHH patients. Less patients of the BHH evaluated "quality of life" reduced or bad (51% vs. 67%) or requested a transfer to the alternative setting (03% vs. 47%). Advocating step by step introduction of home care, quality of life aspects have priority. Certainly, home care deserves greatest attention providing care during the life with cancer. However the final decision about the settings of nursing has to be made by the patients themselves in accordance with his understanding of quality of life.
