Abstract
We investigated California's 1982 decision to stop funding Medicaid neonatal circumcision. We examined male neonatal circumcision rates for those born 1977-1981 and 1983-1987 by region, race, and insurance status. Overall, West-Medicaid circumcision rates decreased from 56.5% in 1979-81 to 26.7% in 1983-85. California's 1982 decision to defund Medicaid circumcision coverage was associated with a 25.0-30.8% point decrease in West-Medicaid circumcision rates compared other groups, p < 0.01. This provides the earliest data to support that funding coverage for neonatal circumcision affects circumcision rates and magnifies healthcare disparities. Other states have since defunded Medicaid male neonatal circumcision. Circumcision have been associated with lower rates of sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and urinary tract infections. Lawmakers should consider re-funding Medicaid male neonatal circumcision.

Abstract
Metabolic surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in patients not morbidly obese (BMI <35) has been widely studied. Taking into account that ∼12% of pancreas transplants are performed in patients with T2DM, our goal was to evaluate the impact of metabolic surgery on the management of obese patients with T2DM on waiting lists for a pancreas transplant. We performed a Roux-en-Y gastrointestinal bypass in 5 patients with insulin-dependent T2DM who were candidates for pancreas after kidney transplant and with a BMI <35. Three patients became insulin independent by the end of the first year while the other 2 reduced their insulin requirements by 70%. Furthermore, all patients achieved improved control of lipid levels. We concluded that the surgery was effective in controlling blood glucose and lipid metabolism in these obese T2DM kidney transplant recipients. In this population, a pancreas transplant, along with its associated morbidity, may be avoided.

Abstract
In 1977, a hair sample was taken from 26 newborn babies and their mothers and analysed for lead and cadmium. Six years later, each of these 26 children was given a psychometric test (McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities). Statistical analysis shows a significant negative relationship between the degree of in utero exposure to cadmium and lead and the child's motor and perceptual abilities. Any effect on memory or verbal skills was not statistically significant. Allowing for the confounding variables does not consistently affect these results.

Abstract
Meat wrapper's asthma is a typical example of occupational asthma due to emissions from chemical products. The authors report three new cases due to the use of the now classic meat packaging techniques in supermarkets. The chemical agents involved were identified. Inhalation tests have been carried out in one patient with the complete wrappings, i.e. the PVC film and the price labels, and separate tests were performed with eight additives of the PVC film, and with phthalic anhydride and di-cyclohexylphthalate emitted from heated price labels. These tests incriminate two products: phthalic anhydride seems to be the principal causal agent and epoxidized soybean oil can be suspected as a secondary agent causing this occupational asthma.

Abstract
The classical ray optics approximation has been applied to compute the angular scattering of light by finitesized hexagonal ice crystals in the form of columns and plates. The results are presented at a wavelength of 0.55 microm for a random orientation of the crystals either in space or in a plane. The results are also compared to those of ice spheres. For the first time the angular light scattering of platelike crystals and a quantitative description of the 46 degrees halo are given. Contrary to earlier studies, it is shown that both plate- and columnlike ice crystals show a strong backscattering. In agreement with previous studies, ice spheres are found to scatter-when compared to ice prisms-less energy at angles near 90 degrees . With regard to the effect of orientation on the light scattering, it is shown that columnlike crystals randomly oriented in a plane behave rather like spherical particles and not like columns randomly oriented in space.
