Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of two fluorinated 3,6-diaza-9-hydroxy-9-borafluorene oxonium acids featuring improved hydrolytic stability and the strong electron-deficient character of the diazaborafluorene core is reported. These boracycles served as precursors of fluorescent spiro-type complexes with (O,N)-chelating ligands which revealed specific properties such as delayed emission, white light emission in the solid state and photocatalytic performance in singlet oxygen-mediated oxidation reactions.

Abstract
Over 30 compounds, including para-, meta-, and ortho-phenylenediboronic acids, ortho-substituted phenylboronic acids, benzenetriboronic acids, di- and triboronated thiophenes, and pyridine derivatives were investigated as potential β-lactamase inhibitors. The highest activity against KPC-type carbapenemases was found for ortho-phenylenediboronic acid 3a, which at the concentration of 8/4 mg/L reduced carbapenems' MICs up to 16/8-fold, respectively. Checkerboard assays revealed strong synergy between carbapenems and 3a with the fractional inhibitory concentrations indices of 0.1-0.32. The nitrocefin hydrolysis test and the whole cell assay with E. coli DH5α transformant carrying blaKPC-3 proved KPC enzyme being its molecular target. para-Phenylenediboronic acids efficiently potentiated carbapenems against KPC-producers and ceftazidime against AmpC-producers, whereas meta-phenylenediboronic acids enhanced only ceftazidime activity against the latter ones. Finally, the statistical analysis confirmed that ortho-phenylenediboronic acids act synergistically with carbapenems significantly stronger than other groups. Since the obtained phenylenediboronic compounds are not toxic to MRC-5 human fibroblasts at the tested concentrations, they can be considered promising scaffolds for the future development of novel KPC/AmpC inhibitors. The complexation of KPC-2 with the most representative isomeric phenylenediboronic acids 1a, 2a, and 3a was modeled by quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations. Compound 3a reached the most effective configuration enabling covalent binding to the catalytic Ser70 residue.

Abstract
10H-Dibenzo[b,e][1,4]thiaborinine 5,5-dioxide (SO2B)-a high triplet (T1 =3.05 eV) strongly electron-accepting boracycle was successfully utilised in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters PXZ-Dipp-SO2B and CZ-Dipp-SO2B. We demonstrate the near-complete separation of highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals leading to a low oscillator strength of the S1 →S0 CT transition, resulting in very long ca. 83 ns and 400 ns prompt fluorescence lifetimes for CZ-Dipp-SO2B and PXZ-Dipp-SO2B, respectively, but retaining near unity photoluminescence quantum yield. OLEDs using CZ-Dipp-SO2B as the luminescent dopant display high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 23.3 % and maximum luminance of 18600 cd m-2 with low efficiency roll off at high brightness. For CZ-Dipp-SO2B, reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) is mediated through the vibronic coupling of two charge transfer (CT) states, without involving the triplet local excited state (3 LE), resulting in remarkable rISC rate invariance to environmental polarity and polarisability whilst giving high organic light-emitting diode (OLED) efficiency. This new form of rISC allows stable OLED performance to be achieved in different host environments.

Abstract
Two isomeric benzosiloxaborole derivatives 3a and 5a bearing fluorine and 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl substituents attached to the aromatic rings were obtained. Both compounds were prone to hydrolytic cleavage of the oxazoline ring after initial protonation or methylation of the nitrogen atom. The derivative 3c featuring N-methylammoniumalkyl ester functionality was successfully subjected to N-sulfonylation and N-acylation reactions to give respective derivatives which demonstrates its potential for modular synthesis of structurally extended benzosiloxaboroles. Compound 5c bearing N-ammoniumalkyl ester underwent conversion to a unique macrocyclic dimer due to siloxaborole ring opening. Furthermore, an unexpected 4-electron reduction of the oxazoline ring occurred during an attempted synthesis of 5a. The reaction gave rise to an unprecedented 7-membered heterocyclic system 4a comprising a relatively stable B–O–B–O–Si linkage and stabilized by an intramolecular N–B coordination. It could be cleaved to derivative 4c bearing BOH and SiMe2OH groups which acts as a pseudo-diol as demonstrated by formation of an adduct with Tavaborole. Apart from the multinuclear NMR spectroscopy characterization, crystal structures of the obtained products were determined in many cases by X-ray diffraction. Investigation of biological activity of the obtained compounds revealed that derivatives 3e and 3f with pendant N-methyl arylsulfonamide groups exhibit high activity against Gram-positive cocci such as methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) ATCC 43300 as well as the MRSA clinical strains, with MIC values in the range of 3.12–6.25 mg L−1. These two compounds also showed activity against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and Enterococcus faecium ATCC 6057 (with MICs of 25–50 mg L−1). The results of the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity studies indicate that 3e and 3f can be considered as potential antibacterial agents, especially against S. aureus MRSA. Transformations of oxazoline–benzosiloxaborole conjugates gave rise to novel boracyclic systems as well as functionalized derivatives featuring antibacterial activity.![]()

Abstract
The review covers the chemistry of organoboron heterocycles structurally related to benzoxaboroles where one of the carbon atoms in a boracycle or a fused benzene ring is replaced by a heteroelement such as boron, silicon, tin, nitrogen, phosphorus, or iodine. Related ring expanded systems including those based on naphthalene and biphenyl cores are also described. The information on synthetic methodology as well as the basic structural and physicochemical characteristics of these emerging heterocycles is complemented by a presentation of their potential applications in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, the latter aspect being mostly focused on the promising antimicrobial activity of selected compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis of potassium 6-hydroxy-7-chloro-1,1-dimethyl-3,3-difluorobenzo-1,2,3-siloxaborolate 5b from readily available 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol was developed. This compound proved useful in various derivatizations resulting in a wide range of O-functionalized benzosiloxaboroles. Reactions of 5b with selected substituted benzoyl chlorides gave rise to a series of respective derivatives with 6-benzoate side groups attached to the benzosiloxaborole core. Furthermore, treatment of 5b with substituted benzenesufonyl chlorides afforded several benzosiloxaboroles bearing functionalized benzenesulfonate moieties at the 6 position. The synthesis of related chloropyridine-2-yloxy substituted benzosiloxaboroles was accomplished by a standard approach involving silylation/boronation of appropriate heterodiaryl ethers. Investigation of biological activity of obtained compounds revealed that some benzoate and most benzenesulfonate derivatives exhibit high activity against Gram-positive cocci such as methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P as well as methicillin-resistant S. aureus ATCC 43300 with the MIC values in the range of 0.39–3.12 mg L−1. Some benzenesulfonate derivatives showed also potent activity against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and E. faecium ATCC 6057 with MIC = 6.25 mg L−1. Importantly, for the most promising cocci-active benzenesulfonate derivatives the obtained MIC values were far below the cytotoxicity limit determined with respect to human normal lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). For those derivatives, the obtained IC50 values were higher than 12.3 mg L−1. The results of antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity indicate that the tested compounds can be considered as potential antibacterial agents. The synthesis of potassium 6-hydroxy-7-chloro-1,1-dimethyl-3,3-difluorobenzo-1,2,3-siloxaborolate 5b from readily available 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol was developed.![]()

Abstract
Two covalent organic frameworks comprising Lewis basic PIII centers and Lewis acidic boron atoms were prepared by poly-condensation reactions of newly obtained tris(4-diisopropoxyborylphenyl)phosphine with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dimethylanthracene. Obtained materials exhibit significant sorption of dihydrogen (100 cm3 g-1 at 1 bar at 77 K), methane (20 cm3 g-1 at 1 bar at 273 K) and carbon dioxide (50 cm3 g-1 at 1 bar at 273 K). They were exploited as solid-state ligands for coordination of Pd0 centers. Alternatively, in a bottom-up approach, boronated phosphine was treated with Pd2 dba3 and poly-condensated, yielding hybrid materials where the polymer networks are formed by means of covalent boronate linkages and coordination P-Pd bonds. In addition, the analogous materials based on phosphine oxide were synthesized. The DFT calculations on framework-guest interactions revealed that the behavior of adjacent boron and phosphorus/phosphine oxide centers is reminiscent of that found in Frustrated Lewis Pairs and may improve sorption of selected molecules.

Abstract
Fluorinated benzosiloxaboroles–silicon congeners of benzoxaboroles, were synthesized and tested as molecular receptors for mono- and disaccharides. The receptors differed in the Lewis acidity of the boron center as well as in the number of potential binding sites. The calculated stability constants indicated different binding affinity of benzosiloxaborole derivatives towards selected saccharides, enabling their classification using a receptor array-based sensing. Unique fluorescence fingerprints were created on the basis of competitive interactions of the studied receptors with both Alizarin Red S (ARS) and tested saccharide molecules. Detailed chemometric analysis of the obtained fluorescence data (based on partial least squares-discriminant analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis) provided the differential sensing of common saccharides, in particular the differentiation between glucose and fructose. In addition, DFT calculations were carried out to shed light on the binding mechanism under different pH conditions.

Abstract
A series of 8 luminescent borafluorene complexes were extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically in order to elucidate the effect of organoboron moiety rigidification on the physicochemical properties of these compounds. Due to the spiro geometry of the boron atom, borafluorene and ligand units are perpendicularly aligned, which considerably affects the flexibility of the molecule as well as its solid-state structure. Through comparative analysis with close diphenyl analogues, we show how these structural features influence the thermal, photoluminescent and charge mobility behaviour of the studied compounds. Crystal structural analysis revealed that the molecules are connected mostly through C-HO and C-Hπ interactions formed between perpendicularly aligned borafluorene and ligand moieties from neighboured molecules, serving as a complementary donor and acceptor of electron density, respectively. This also efficiently prevents molecules from engaging in unfavoured π-stacking contact. Furthermore, structural analysis suggests that borafluorene complexes possess a considerable degree of flexibility due to OBN heterocycle distortions and mutual borafluorene-ligand plane movements. The magnitude of these effects strictly depends on the ligand structure and may lead either to enhancing or lowering the quantum yield value with respect to BPh2 analogues, while the absorption and emission wavelength are slightly affected. The measured photophysical parameters for solid-state samples showed that the studied complexes are much better emitters in their crystalline states that in amorphous films. The TD-DFT and NTO calculations revealed a significant change in frontier molecular distribution, with the HOMO localized on the borafluorene moiety. However, as the HOMO-LUMO transition is geometrically not favoured, excitation occurred from HOMO-1 localized on the ligand. Finally, aggregation effects were discussed based on supramolecular arrangements in crystal structures and charge transfer rates obtained from theoretical calculations in the framework of the Marcus-Hush approximation. They suggest that borafluorene complexes are much better electron carriers with respect to non-annulated BPh2 complexes.

Abstract
A series of isomeric boronated acridinium dyes were obtained by reactions of 10-(4'-octyloxyphenyl) functionalized 9(10H)-acridanone derivative with lithiated phenylboronic azaesters followed by aromatization with perchloric acid. The effect of the position of boronic group attached at ortho, meta, and para positions of the 9-phenyl ring on the photophysical properties was investigated. Conversion to related betaine trifluoroborato-substituted compounds was successfully performed, and the effect of this structural change on UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy characteristics was established. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry studies revealed that electrochemical behavior of cationic versus betaine structures is different in terms of redox potential values as well as stability. The theoretical calculations revealed a different scheme for molecular excitation processes in B(OH)2 versus BF3 --substituted compounds as charge transfer to acridinium core is observed from N-aryl or B-aryl moiety, respectively. Obtained compounds were active as photocatalysts in selected visible-light-promoted addition reactions to unsaturated substrates.

Abstract
A fluorescent bis(8-oxyquinolato) diborinic complex with a central 2,2'-biphenyl backbone 1 and its octafluoro analogue 2 were synthesized to study the optical-structural relationship of sterically encumbered molecules featuring close intramolecular π-stacking interactions involving chromophore units. The crystal structure of 1 revealed a unique π-stacked arrangement of two pendant phenyl groups and two 8-oxyquinolato ligands (Q) located in the inner part of the complex. Unlike 1, the closely related complex 2 features conformational isomerism, and two major forms, namely 2-syn and 2-anti, are observed in solution to a varying extent depending on the solvent polarity. Form 2-syn, a geometrical analogue of 1, is preferable in polar solutions, whereas its rotational isomer 2-anti featuring π-stacking interactions between the terminal phenyl group and Q ligand dominates in benzene and chloromethane solutions. The observed conformational equilibria strongly affect the optical properties of the system, specifically leading to a significant increase of the quantum yield of emission (from 22% in MeCN to 38% in benzene) accompanied by a bathochromic shift (Δλ = 10 nm) of absorption and hypsochromic shifts (Δλ = -8 nm) of emission spectra with decreasing solvent polarity. This effect was ascribed to the variation in frontier orbital distributions.

Abstract
The conversion of 2,4,6-tris(4'-bromophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine to the respective triboronic acid was successfully accomplished by a simple triple Br/Li exchange followed by boronation. Further dehydrative condensation reactions with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene or 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dilalkylanthracenes (R = Me, Et) resulted in materials featuring good porosity and sorption properties with the nitrogen uptake exceeding 500 cm3/g (STP) and SBET up to 1267 m2/g (T = 77.2 K). In addition, simple dehydration of this compound was employed for the preparation of a hybrid 2D COF composed of triazine, boroxine, and benzene rings. The formation of materials was confirmed by the IR analysis and NMR studies on water-decomposed samples. All obtained COFs exhibit high thermal stability with decomposition temperatures in the range of 400-600 °C. They also show quite different morphology ranging from regular 0.5-4 μm spherical and ellipsoidal clusters to 5-12 μm bent rodlike particles. The PXRD studies supported by periodic DFT modeling in Crystal09 package revealed the formation of crystalline 2D honeycomb-type lattices with eclipsed stacking models. In addition, the differences between boroxine-triazine material and related COF-1 and CTF-1 structures were investigated by comparing layer interaction energies, work function values as well as atomic charges and electrostatic potential maps plotted on the electron density surfaces. It demonstrates that the interactions between layers are enhanced by the stacking of triazine and boroxine rings. Finally, we have investigated the upper limit to space accessible volume using a procrystal electron density approach.

Abstract
Recently we were focused on the synthetic, physicochemical and theoretical evaluation of the properties of borinic 8-oxyquinolinates.[1,2] Such systems are of interest of many groups in the world, as borinic derivatives are promising materials for the preparation of luminescent layers in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).[3] Our aim is to trace the impact of structure on properties of the system. Hence we have conducted polymorph screening for highly strain aromatic heteroleptic borinic system. As a result, we are presenting, the very first examples of polymorphism in the group of aromatic borinic 8-oxyquinolinate complexes [(2-fluoro-3-pyridyl) (2,2`-biphenyl)borinic 8-oxyquinolinate)]. We wanted to extend our investigations on high-pressure crystallography. These investigations were prompted by results obtained by other groups which analysed crystal structures of AlQ3, GaQ3 and InQ3 under low and high pressure. Such studies helped to trace a connection between the motifs present in the crystal phases and optical properties of these complexes as a consequence of orbital interactions. On this basis we were interested in investigation of the influence of high pressure on the packing of synthesized and characterized (2-fluoro-3-pyridyl) (4-iodophenyl)borinic 8-oxyquinolinate.

Abstract
X-ray crystallographic and computational studies are reported for a series of boranthrenes, substituted with halogen atoms. The role of competitive hydrogen (O—H...O, O—H...F, C—H...O) and halogen (Cl...Cl, O...Br, F...F) bonding interactions on the molecular arrangement in the crystal structures is discussed. The structural analysis and calculations reveal that the O—H...O hydrogen bond in the unsubstituted derivative 5,10-dihydroxy-5,10-dihydroboranthrene, C12H10B2O2, is of moderate strength (ca−20 kJ mol−1), but weaker than that in the related thiophene derivative 4,8-dihydro-4,8-dihydroxy-p-diborino[2,3-b:5,6-b]dithiophene, C8H6B2O2S2(ca−40 kJ mol−1). This is due to shielding of the OH group by the H atoms in the β-position of the boranthrene unit. Structural diversity derived from the flexibility of the O—H...O hydrogen bond facilitates the occurrence of other competitive interactions. For instance, in the 1,6-difluoro derivative, C12H8B2F2O2, the crystal packing results from O—H...F and F...F interactions. In turn, the 1,6-dibromo derivative, C12H8B2Br2O2, is dominated by Br...O halogen-bond interactions. In the most interesting case, the 1,6-dichloro derivative, C12H8B2Cl2O2, molecular disorder leads to the formation of two different supramolecular arrangements co-existing in the crystal lattice, one based on the Cl...Cl and C—H...O bonds, and the other stabilized by O—H...O hydrogen bonds. Calculations performed with density-functional theory (DFT;CRYSTAL09) andPIXELmethodologies show that both lattices are characterized by similar energy values (ca−100 kJ mol−1). A mixed arrangement with random or short-range-ordered molecular orientations can also be expected.

Abstract
The mol-ecular structure of the title compound, C10H17BO3Si, features an intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond; the boronic group group has an exo-endo conformation. In the crystal, the mol-ecules inter-act with each other by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, producing centrosymmetric dimers that are linked by weak π-π stacking inter-actions featuring specific short B⋯C contacts [e.g. 3.372 (2) Å], forming an infinite columnar structure aligned along the a-axis direction.

Abstract
In the title mol-ecule, C(18)H(23)BO(4), the dihedral angle between the least-squares planes of the aromatic rings is 84.88 (3)°. The B atom deviates by 0.202 (1) Å from the least-squares plane of the mesityl ring. All of the meth-oxy groups are approximately coplanar with the 2,4,6-trimeth-oxy-phenyl ring, whereas the BOH group is twisted with respect to it by 19.5°. The borinic OH group is engaged in an intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond with one of ortho-meth-oxy groups. The mol-ecular structure is stabilized by weak C-H⋯O contacts. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by weak C-H⋯O and C-H⋯π inter-actions, generating a three-dimensional network.
