Transfer learning and self-distillation for automated detection of schizophrenia using single-channel EEG and scalogram images

Schizophrenia (SZ) has been acknowledged as a highly intricate mental disorder for a long time. In fact, individuals with SZ experience a blurred line between fantasy and reality, leading to a lack of awareness about their condition, which can pose significant challenges during the treatment process. Due to the importance of the issue, timely diagnosis of this illness can not only assist patients and their families in managing the condition but also enable early intervention, which may help prevent its advancement. EEG is a widely utilized technique for investigating mental disorders like SZ due to its non-invasive nature, affordability, and wide accessibility. In this study, our main goal is to develop an optimized system that can achieve automatic diagnosis of SZ with minimal input information. To optimize the system, we adopted a strategy of using single-channel EEG signals and integrated knowledge distillation and transfer learning techniques into the model. This approach was designed to improve the performance and efficiency of our proposed method for SZ diagnosis. Additionally, to leverage the pre-trained models effectively, we converted the EEG signals into images using Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). This transformation allowed us to harness the capabilities of pre-trained models in the image domain, enabling automatic SZ detection with enhanced efficiency. To achieve a more robust estimate of the model's performance, we employed fivefold cross-validation. The accuracy achieved from the 5-s records of the EEG signal, along with the combination of self-distillation and VGG16 for the P4 channel, is 97.81. This indicates a high level of accuracy in diagnosing SZ using the proposed method.

COV-MobNets: a mobile networks ensemble model for diagnosis of COVID-19 based on chest X-ray images

BACKGROUND

The medical profession is facing an excessive workload, which has led to the development of various Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems as well as Mobile-Aid Diagnosis (MAD) systems. These technologies enhance the speed and accuracy of diagnoses, particularly in areas with limited resources or remote regions during the pandemic. The primary purpose of this research is to predict and diagnose COVID-19 infection from chest X-ray images by developing a mobile-friendly deep learning framework, which has the potential for deployment in portable devices such as mobile or tablet, especially in situations where the workload of radiology specialists may be high. Moreover, this could improve the accuracy and transparency of population screening to assist radiologists during the pandemic.

METHODS

In this study, the Mobile Networks ensemble model called COV-MobNets is proposed to classify positive COVID-19 X-ray images from negative ones and can have an assistant role in diagnosing COVID-19. The proposed model is an ensemble model, combining two lightweight and mobile-friendly models: MobileViT based on transformer structure and MobileNetV3 based on Convolutional Neural Network. Hence, COV-MobNets can extract the features of chest X-ray images in two different methods to achieve better and more accurate results. In addition, data augmentation techniques were applied to the dataset to avoid overfitting during the training process. The COVIDx-CXR-3 benchmark dataset was used for training and evaluation.

RESULTS

The classification accuracy of the improved MobileViT and MobileNetV3 models on the test set has reached 92.5% and 97%, respectively, while the accuracy of the proposed model (COV-MobNets) has reached 97.75%. The sensitivity and specificity of the proposed model have also reached 98.5% and 97%, respectively. Experimental comparison proves the result is more accurate and balanced than other methods.

CONCLUSION

The proposed method can distinguish between positive and negative COVID-19 cases more accurately and quickly. The proposed method proves that utilizing two automatic feature extractors with different structures as an overall framework of COVID-19 diagnosis can lead to improved performance, enhanced accuracy, and better generalization to new or unseen data. As a result, the proposed framework in this study can be used as an effective method for computer-aided diagnosis and mobile-aided diagnosis of COVID-19. Reconstructed State Space Features for Classification of ECG Signals

Background:

Cardiac arrhythmias are considered as one of the most serious health conditions; therefore, accurate and quick diagnosis of these conditions is highly paramount for the electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Moreover, are rather difficult for the cardiologists to diagnose with unaided eyes due to a close similarity of these signals in the time domain.

Objective:

In this paper, an image-based and machine learning method were presented in order to investigate the differences between the three cardiac arrhythmias of VF, VT, SVT and the normal signal.

Material and Methods:

In this simulation study, the ECG data used are collected from 3 databases, including Boston Beth University Arrhythmias Center, Creighton University, and MIT-BIH. The proposed algorithm was implemented using MATLAB R2015a software and its simulation. At first, the signal is transmitted to the state space using an optimal time delay. Then, the optimal delay values are obtained using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and normalized mutual information criterion. Furthermore, the result is considered as a binary image. Then, 19 features are extracted from the image and the results are presented in the multilayer perceptron neural network for the purpose of training and testing.

Results:

In order to classify N-VF, VT-SVT, N-SVT, VF-VT, VT-N-VF, N-SVT-VF, VT-VF-SVT and VT-VF-SVT-N in the conducted experiments, the accuracy rates were determined at 99.5%, 100%, 94.98%, 100%,100%, 100%, 99.5%, 96.5% and 95%, respectively.

Conclusion:

In this paper, a new approach was developed to classify the abnormal signals obtained from an ECG such as VT, VF, and SVT compared to a normal signal. Compared to Other related studies, our proposed system significantly performed better
