Visual Puzzles, Figure Weights, and Cancellation: Some Preliminary Hypotheses on the Functional and Neural Substrates of These Three New WAIS-IV Subtests

In this study, five consecutive patients with focal strokes and/or cortical excisions were examined with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and Wechsler Memory Scale-Fourth Editions along with a comprehensive battery of other neuropsychological tasks. All five of the lesions were large and typically involved frontal, temporal, and/or parietal lobes and were lateralized to one hemisphere. The clinical case method was used to determine the cognitive neuropsychological correlates of mental rotation (Visual Puzzles), Piagetian balance beam (Figure Weights), and visual search (Cancellation) tasks. The pattern of results on Visual Puzzles and Figure Weights suggested that both subtests involve predominately right frontoparietal networks involved in visual working memory. It appeared that Visual Puzzles could also critically rely on the integrity of the left temporoparietal junction. The left temporoparietal junction could be involved in temporal ordering and integration of local elements into a nonverbal gestalt. In contrast, the Figure Weights task appears to critically involve the right temporoparietal junction involved in numerical magnitude estimation. Cancellation was sensitive to left frontotemporal lesions and not right posterior parietal lesions typical of other visual search tasks. In addition, the Cancellation subtest was sensitive to verbal search strategies and perhaps object-based attention demands, thereby constituting a unique task in comparison with previous visual search tasks.

Intuition, insight, and the right hemisphere: Emergence of higher sociocognitive functions

Intuition is the ability to understand immediately without conscious reasoning and is sometimes explained as a 'gut feeling' about the rightness or wrongness of a person, place, situation, temporal episode or object. In contrast, insight is the capacity to gain accurate and a deep understanding of a problem and it is often associated with movement beyond existing paradigms. Examples include Darwin, Einstein and Freud's theories of natural selection, relativity, or the unconscious; respectively. Many cultures name these concepts and acknowledge their value, and insight is recognized as particularly characteristic of eminent achievements in the arts, sciences and politics. Considerable data suggests that these two concepts are more related than distinct, and that a more distributed intuitive network may feed into a predominately right hemispheric insight-based functional neuronal architecture. The preparation and incubation stages of insight may rely on the incorporation of domain-specific automatized expertise schema associated with intuition. In this manuscript the neural networks associated with intuition and insight are reviewed. Case studies of anomalous subjects with ability-achievement discrepancies are summarized. This theoretical review proposes the prospect that atypical localization of cognitive modules may enhance intuitive and insightful functions and thereby explain individual achievement beyond that expected by conventionally measured intelligence tests. A model and theory of intuition and insight's neuroanatomical basis is proposed which could be used as a starting point for future research and better understanding of the nature of these two distinctly human and highly complex poorly understood abilities.

A review and empirical study of the composite scales of the Das-Naglieri cognitive assessment system

Alexander Luria’s model of the working brain consisting of three functional units was formulated through the examination of hundreds of focal brain-injury patients. Several psychometric instruments based on Luria’s syndrome analysis and accompanying qualitative tasks have been developed since the 1970s. In the mid-1970s, JP Das and colleagues defined a specific cognitive processes model based directly on Luria’s two coding units termed simultaneous and successive by studying diverse cross-cultural, ability, and socioeconomic strata. The cognitive assessment system is based on the PASS model of cognitive processes and consists of four composite scales of Planning–Attention–Simultaneous–Successive (PASS) devised by Naglieri and Das in 1997. Das and colleagues developed the two new scales of planning and attention to more closely model Luria’s theory of higher cortical functions. In this paper a theoretical review of Luria’s theory, Das and colleagues elaboration of Luria’s model, and the neural correlates of PASS composite scales based on extant studies is summarized. A brief empirical study of the neuropsychological specificity of the PASS composite scales in a sample of 33 focal cortical stroke patients using cluster analysis is then discussed. Planning and simultaneous were sensitive to right hemisphere lesions. These findings were integrated with recent functional neuroimaging studies of PASS scales. In sum it was found that simultaneous is strongly dependent on dual bilateral occipitoparietal interhemispheric coordination whereas successive demonstrated left frontotemporal specificity with some evidence of interhemispheric coordination across the prefrontal cortex. Hence, support for the validity of the PASS composite scales was found as well as for the axiom of the independence of code content from code type originally specified in 1994 by Das, Naglieri, and Kirby.

Bipolar disorder and neurophysiologic mechanisms

Recent studies have suggested that some variants of bipolar disorder (BD) may be due to hyperconnectivity between orbitofrontal (OFC) and temporal pole (TP) structures in the dominant hemisphere. Some initial MRI studies noticed that there were corpus callosum abnormalities within specific regional areas and it was hypothesized that developmentally this could result in functional or effective connectivity changes within the orbitofrontal-basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits. Recent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) white matter fiber tractography studies may well be superior to region of interest (ROI) DTI in understanding BD. A "ventral semantic stream" has been discovered connecting the TP and OFC through the uncinate and inferior longitudinal fasciculi and the elusive TP is known to be involved in theory of mind and complex narrative understanding tasks. The OFC is involved in abstract valuation in goal and sub-goal structures and the TP may be critical in binding semantic memory with person-emotion linkages associated with narrative. BD patients have relative attenuation of performance on visuoconstructional praxis consistent with an atypical localization of cognitive functions. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that some BD alleles are being selected for which could explain the enhanced creativity in higher-ability probands. Associations between ROI's that are not normally connected could explain the higher incidence of artistic aptitude, writing ability, and scientific achievements among some mood disorder subjects.

A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of the body schema using full human line-drawing figures in an on-line verbal naming and localization task of single body part words

Naming and localization of individual body part words to a high-resolution line drawing of a full human figure was tested in a mixed-sex sample of nine right handed subjects. Activation within the superior medial left parietal cortex and bilateral dorsolateral cortex was consistent with involvement of the body schema which is a dynamic postural self-representation coding and combining sensory afference and motor efference inputs/outputs that is automatic and nonconscious. Additional activation of the left rostral occipitotemporal cortex was consistent with involvement of the neural correlates of the verbalizable body structural description that encodes semantic and categorical representations to animate objects such as full human figures. The results point to a highly distributed cortical representation for the encoding and manipulation of body part information and highlight the need for the incorporation of more ecologically valid measures of body schema coding in future functional neuroimaging studies.

A nonparametric study of the performance of cortical lesion patients on the Cognitive Assessment System

Cortical lesion patients were tested on the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) in the post-acute phase (median > or = 1 month) to determine the degree of sensitivity and specificity of the CAS subtests to neuropsychological impairment. Nonparametric ANOVA and subsequent Mann-Whitney statistics were used. Demographic variables of age, education, handedness, sex were controlled for Matching Numbers was sensitive to right-hemisphere lesions while Verbal-Spatial Relations was sensitive to anterior lesions. Receptive Attention and Figure Memory were sensitive to posterior lesions. Number Detection was sensitive to right anterior lesions. Nonverbal Matrices was sensitive right anterior lesions and the inclusion of a disproportionate number of left-handers within this specific group appeared to be partly moderating this effect. The magnitudes of the performance decrement for these subtests were substantial with Figure Memory demonstrating the largest effect. The results suggest that select CAS subtests could be useful for the multiple baseline assessment of neuropsychological functioning.

Illusory conjunctions in simultanagnosia: Coarse coding of visual feature location?

Simultanagnosia is a disorder characterized by an inability to see more than one object at a time. We report a simultanagnosic patient (ED) with bilateral posterior infarctions who produced frequent illusory conjunctions on tasks involving form and surface features (e.g., a red T) and form alone. ED also produced "blend" errors in which features of one familiar perceptual unit appeared to migrate to another familiar perceptual unit (e.g., "RO" read as "PQ"). ED often misread scrambled letter strings as a familiar word (e.g., "hmoe" read as "home"). Finally, ED's success in reporting two letters in an array was inversely related to the distance between the letters. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that ED's illusory reflect coarse coding of visual feature location that is ameliorated in part by top-down information from object and word recognition systems; the findings are also consistent, however, with Treisman's Feature Integration Theory. Finally, the data provide additional support for the claim that the dorsal parieto-occipital cortex is implicated in the binding of visual feature information.

A case study of strategic infarct dementia investigated with the cognitive assessment system

Two subjects with brain lesions who were matched on demographic variables were tested on the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS). AK had been dependent on caregivers after a frontal aneurysm 6 years previously despite intact receptive and expressive language skills and motor functions. GM sustained multiple infarcts although he continued to function well on his own. Nonparametric analysis showed that AK's T scores on CAS subtests were lower than that of GM's based on a comparison with a heterogeneous group of brain-damaged patients (p < .003). The CAS's broad range of complexity of items within subtests, apparent sensitivity in differentiating rates of cognitive decline in dementia, and convergence with dementia rating scales suggests that it could be useful for assessment of strategic infarct dementia.

Quantitative analyses of schooling effects on executive function in young children

Developmental studies have demonstrated the utility of select executive function (EF) tasks for the early diagnosis of specific learning-related problems (e.g., Snow, 1998). However, previous data demonstrating schooling effects on EF measures suggests potential pitfalls in clinical interpretation. In the present study three common EF measures, (Wisconsin Card Sort, Thurstone Word Fluency, and a mazes task) in addition to a VIQ estimating task, were administered to a cross-section of 115 children aged 7 to 9. Using a school-entrance cut-off design the unique contributions of formal schooling versus age-related changes to performance on the EF measures were examined. Schooling effects were both task and age-dependent supporting the conclusion that the proper use of EF measures with children in this age range depends upon consideration of factors beyond that usually depicted in net-effect models.

Selective removal of the carboxyl-terminal tail end of the Dictyostelium myosin II heavy chain by chymotrypsin

Dictyostelium myosin II is a conventional myosin consisting of two heavy chains of 243,000 Da and two pairs of light chains of 16,000 and 18,000 Da. In this paper, we show that the heavy chain of myosin II can be rapidly and selectively cleaved by chymotrypsin to yield two fragments with molecular weights of 195,000 and 38,000 Da as estimated from sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels. Chymotryptic cleavage at this site occurs most readily in the absence of salt and is greatly inhibited as the salt concentration is increased from 0 to 60 mM. Amino acid sequence analysis of the small fragment demonstrates that its amino terminus corresponds to lysine 1826 of the myosin II heavy chain. If the fragment extends to the carboxyl terminus of the myosin II heavy chain, it would have a molecular weight of 33,700. Upon digestion of myosin II which has been phosphorylated with a high molecular weight Dictyostelium myosin heavy chain kinase (Côté, G.P., and Bukiejko, U. (1987) J. Biol. Chem. 262, 1065-1072), all of the phosphate is recovered on the 33,700-Da tail-end fragment. Chymotrypsin-cleaved myosin II is shown to be capable of forming filaments at salt concentrations between 20 and 100 mM as judged by its ability to be sedimented by centrifugation. Only the large fragment of myosin II is found in the pellet; the 33,700-dalton fragment remains soluble. Chymotrypsin-cleaved myosin II can bind to actin and displays a high Ca2+-activated ATPase activity but has very low actin-activated ATPase activity.
