Immunostimulatory effect of Tinospora cordifolia Miers leaf extract in Oreochromis mossambicus

Immunostimulatory effect of leaf extract of T. cordifolia on (i) specific immunity (antibody response), (ii) non-specific immunity (neutrophil activity) and (iii) disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila was investigated in O. mossambicus. Ethanol and petroleum ether extracts of the leaves were used. Both ethanol and petroleum ether extracts administered at doses of 0.8, 8 or 80 mg/kg body weight, prolonged the peak primary antibody titres upto one to three weeks. Ethanol extract at the dose of 8 mg/kg and petroleum ether extract at the doses of 0.8 or 8 mg/kg enhanced the secondary antibody response. All the doses of ethanol extract significantly enhanced neutrophil activity. Fish injected with petroleum ether or ethanol extract at a dose of 8 mg/kg were protected against experimental infection with virulent A. hydrophila. The results indicates the potential of T. cordifolia leaf extracts for use as an immunoprophylactic to prevent diseases in finfish aquaculture.

Electron Transfer Reaction of Oxo(salen)chromium(V) Ion with Anilines

The kinetics of oxidation of 16 meta-, ortho-, and para-substituted anilines with nine oxo(salen)chromium(V) ions have been studied by spectrophotometric, ESIMS, and EPR techniques. During the course of the reaction, two new peaks with lambda(max) at 470 and 730 nm appear in the absorption spectrum, and these peaks are due to the formation of emeraldine forms of oligomers of aniline supported by the ESIMS peaks with m/z values 274 and 365 (for the trimer and tetramer of aniline). The rate of the reaction is highly sensitive to the change of substituents in the aryl moiety of aniline and in the salen ligand of chromium(V) complexes. Application of the Hammett equation to analyze kinetic data yields a rho value of -3.8 for the substituent variation in aniline and +2.2 for the substituent variation in the salen ligand of the metal complex. On the basis of the spectral, kinetic, and product analysis studies, a mechanism involving an electron transfer from the nitrogen of aniline to the metal complex in the rate controlling step has been proposed. The Marcus equation has been successfully applied to this system, and the calculated values are compliant with the measured values.

Coordination chemistry of chromium-Salen complexes studied by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

The gas-phase coordination behavior of the [Cr(III)(Salen)]PF(6) complex at the free axial positions has been studied in the presence of amines as ligands (propylamine and a series of diamines) under electrospray ionization conditions. The [Cr(III)(Salen)](+) complex formed stable five- and six-coordinated complex ions, [Cr(III)(Salen)(L)](+) and [Cr(III)(Salen)(L)(2)](+), respectively, where L = solvent molecule or amine. When diamines were used as ligands, abundant [Cr(III)(Salen)(L)](+) ions were observed in which two axial positions of the [Cr(III)(Salen)](+) species are occupied by the two amino groups of the diamine ligand. The relative abundances of ligated complex ions, fragment ions, and solvent adducts of fragment ions in the ESI mass spectra, were found to depend on the cone voltage used to record the spectrum. The ESI mass spectra of [Cr(III)(Salen)](+) in the presence of diamines as ligands, and experiments on ligand-pickup in the collision cell, clearly demonstrated that the [Cr(III)(Salen)(L)](+) complex ion is stable for 1,2-diaminoethane and 1,3-diaminopropane. The stability of [Cr(III)(Salen)(L)](+) ions gradually decreased from 1,4-diaminobutane to 1,6-diaminohexane, and then showed a slight increase for 1,7-diaminoheptane and 1,8-diaminooctane. The collision-induced dissociation spectra of [Cr(III)(Salen)(L)](+) ions support the above observations.

Electronic and steric effects on the oxygenation of organic sulfides and sulfoxides with oxo(salen)chromium(V) complexes

The kinetics of oxygenation of several para-substituted phenyl methyl sulfides and sulfoxides with a series of 5-substituted and sterically hindered oxo(salen)chromium(V) complexes have been studied by a spectrophotometric technique. Though the reaction of sulfides follows simple second-order kinetics, sulfoxides bind strongly with the metal center of the oxidant and the oxygen atom is transferred from the oxidant-sulfoxide adduct to the substrate. The reduction potentials, E(red), of eight Cr(V) complexes correlate well with the Hammett sigma constants, and the reactivity of the metal complexes is in accordance with the E(red) values. The metal complexes carrying bulky tert-butyl groups entail steric effects. Organic sulfides follow a simple electrophilic oxidation mechanism, and the nonligated sulfoxides undergo electrophilic oxidation to sulfones using the oxidant-sulfoxide adduct as the oxidant. Sulfoxides catalyze the Cr(V)-salen complexes' oxygenation of organic sulfides, and the catalytic activity of sulfoxides is comparable to pyridine N-oxide and triphenylphosphine oxide. The rate constants obtained for the oxidation of sulfides and sulfoxides clearly indicate the operation of a pronounced electronic and steric effect in the oxygenation reaction with oxo(salen)chromium(V) complexes.
