Abstract
BACKGROUND Comprehensive genome profiling (CGP) serves as a guide for suitable genomically matched therapies for patients with cancer. However, little is known about the impact of the timing and types of cancer on the therapeutic benefit of CGP. MATERIALS AND METHODS A single hospital-based pan-cancer prospective study (TOP-GEAR; UMIN000011141) was conducted to examine the benefit of CGP with respect to the timing and types of cancer. Patients with advanced solid tumors (>30 types) who either progressed with or without standard treatments were genotyped using a single CGP test. The subjects were followed up for a median duration of 590 days to examine therapeutic response, using progression-free survival (PFS), PFS ratio, and factors associated with therapeutic response. RESULTS Among the 507 patients, 62 (12.2%) received matched therapies with an overall response rate (ORR) of 32.3%. The PFS ratios (≥1.3) were observed in 46.3% (19/41) of the evaluated patients. The proportion of subjects receiving such therapies in the rare cancer cohort was lower than that in the non-rare cancer cohort (9.6% and 17.4%, respectively; P = 0.010). However, ORR of the rare cancer patients was higher than that in the non-rare cancer cohort (43.8% and 20.0%, respectively; P = 0.046). Moreover, ORR of matched therapies in the first or second line after receiving the CGP test was higher than that in the third or later lines (62.5% and 21.7%, respectively; P = 0.003). Rare cancer and early-line treatment were significantly and independently associated with ORR of matched therapies in multivariable analysis (P = 0.017 and 0.004, respectively). CONCLUSION Patients with rare cancer preferentially benefited from tumor mutation profiling by increasing the chances of therapeutic response to matched therapies. Early-line treatments after profiling increase the therapeutic benefit, irrespective of tumor types.

Abstract
Studying the gravity-dependent characteristics of regolith, fine-grained granular media covering extra-terrestrial bodies is essential for the reliable design and analysis of landers and rovers for space exploration. In this study, we propose an experimental approach to examine a granular flow under stable artificial gravity conditions for a long duration generated by a centrifuge at the International Space Station. We also perform a discrete element simulation of the granular flow in both artificial and natural gravity environments. The simulation results verify that the granular flows in artificial and natural gravity are consistent. Further, regression analysis of the experimental results reveals that the mass flow rate of granular flow quantitatively follows a well-known physics-based law with some deviations under low-gravity conditions, implying that the bulk density of the granular media decreases with gravity. This insight also indicates that the bulk density considered in simulation studies of space probes under low-gravity conditions needs to be tuned for their reliable design and analysis.

Abstract
We investigated the change in the metal-molecule interaction in a 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT) single-molecule junction using a combination of surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectra and current-voltage curves. During the stretching process, the conductance of the junction systematically decreased, accompanied by an increase in the vibrational energy of the CC stretching mode. By analyzing the current-voltage curves and Raman spectra, we found that the interaction between the π orbital of BDT and the electronic states of Au was diminished by the orientation change of BDT during the stretching process. A comparison with a 4,4'-bipyridine single-molecule junction revealed that the reduction of coupling of the Au-S contacts was smaller than that of Au-pyridine contacts. Therefore, the electronic states originating from the contact geometry are responsible for the tolerance to the stretching of thiol-terminated molecular junctions.

Abstract
The atomic switches have attracted wide attention owing to their applications in nonvolatile electric devices. The atomic switch is operated by the formation and dissipation of a metallic filament inside a metal sulfide film, which is controlled by a solid electrochemical reaction. Although the metallic filament is considered to consist of metal atoms, the chemical species of the metallic filament are difficult to be identified due to challenges in observing the metallic filament inside the solid. In this study, we report the investigation on the metallic filament in the atomic switch with metal sulfide based on point-contact spectroscopy (PCS). By cooling the atomic switch, the switch voltage increased to 1 V, which allowed for the PCS measurement. The PCS revealed that the metallic filament was composed of Ag atoms in the case of the Pt/Ag2S/Ag atomic switch. We applied this technique to the Pt/Cu2S/Ag and Pt/Ag2S/Cu atomic switches to uncover the formation process of the metallic filament. In both atomic switches, the chemical species of the metallic filament were Ag. The metal atoms were supplied from both the metal electrode and the sulfide layer.

Abstract
We have studied the formation process of the metal atomic filament for metal sulfide atomic switches by electrical measurement. The switching between ON and OFF states of the atomic switch is controlled by the application of the bias voltage for the atomic switches. The SET (OFF → ON) and RESET (ON → OFF) voltages were investigated for the atomic switch where the Ag2S or Cu2S layer were sandwiched between the Pt and Ag or Cu electrodes. The SET and RESET voltages of the Ag/Cu2S/Pt and Cu/Ag2S/Pt were close to those of the Ag/Ag2S/Pt atomic switch, and different from those of the Cu/Cu2S/Pt atomic switch. These results indicated that the dominant chemical species of the making and breaking part of the metal filament was Ag, and that the source of the metal filament was both the sulfide layer and the metal electrode.

Abstract
Background Lupus nephritis (LN) is a major risk factor for overall morbidity and mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods We retrospectively analyzed cases of proliferative and membranous LN patients who underwent a renal biopsy at our hospital in 1993–2016. We analyzed the association between complete renal response (CR) rates at 12 months after induction therapy and predictive factors for CR and their association with renal flares. Results Of the 95 cases analyzed, we were able to track the therapeutic responses of 81 patients at 12 months after their induction therapy. The median follow-up duration after renal biopsy was 51 months (interquartile range: 16.5–154.5 months). The Cox proportional hazards model showed that, compared to not attaining CR at 12 months, the attainment of CR at 12 months was correlated with being free from renal flares. The multivariate logistic analysis revealed that the predictive factors for CR at 12 months were the anti-La/SSB antibodies (U/ml) (odds ratio (OR) 1.22, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01–1.63, p = 0.0220), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (OR 0.68, 95% CI 0.44–0.90, p = 0.00048) and serum β2 microglobulin (MG) (OR 0.26, 95% CI 0.06–0.74, p = 0.00098) levels. Conclusions Among LN patients, being free from renal flares was associated with attaining CR at 12 months after induction therapy. Anti-La/SSB antibodies were a positive predictive factor, and BUN and serum β2MG levels were negative predictive factors of CR at 12 months.

Abstract
Background Lupus nephritis (LN) is a major determinant of mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Here we evaluated the association between complete renal response (CR) and mortality in LN. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the cases of 172 of 201 patients with LN for whom data on the therapeutic response at 6 and 12 months after induction therapy were available. The patients underwent a renal biopsy at Nagasaki University Hospital and community hospitals in Nagasaki between the years 1990 and 2016. We determined the CR rates at 6 and 12 months after induction therapy initiation and evaluated the predictive factors for CR and their relationship with mortality. We performed univariate and multivariable competing risks regression analyses to determine the factors predictive of CR. The patients' survival data were analyzed by the Kaplan–Meier method with a log-rank test. Results The median follow-up duration after renal biopsy was 120 months (interquartile range: 60.3–191.8 months). The 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-year survival rates of our cohort were 99.3, 94.6, 92.0 and 85.4%, respectively. During follow-up, nine patients (5.2%) died from cardiovascular events, infection, malignancy and other causes. The multivariate analysis revealed that the following factors were predictive of CR. At 6 months: male gender (odds ratio (OR) 0.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.08–0.65, p = 0.0028), proteinuria (g/gCr) (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.71–0.97, p = 0.0098) and index of activity (0–24) (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.71–0.99, p = 0.0382). At 12 months: male gender (OR 0.25, 95% CI 0.09–0.67, p = 0.0043) and index of activity (0–24) (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.69–0.98, p = 0.0236). The Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that compared to not achieving CR at 12 months, achieving CR at 12 months was significantly correlated with the survival rate (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.04–0.92, p = 0.0339). Conclusions Our results suggest that the survival rate of patients with LN is associated with the achievement of CR at 12 months after induction therapy, and that male gender and a higher index of activity (0–24) are the common predictive factors for failure to achieve CR at 6 and 12 months.

Abstract
A theoretical model, informed by numerical simulations based on the shallow water equations, is developed to predict the flow passing through and around a uniform porous obstacle in a shallow channel, where background friction is important. This problem is relevant to a number of practical situations, including flow through aquatic vegetation, the performance of arrays of turbines in tidal channels and hydrodynamic forces on offshore structures. To demonstrate this relevance, the theoretical model is used to (i) reinterpret core flow velocities in existing laboratory-based data for an array of emergent cylinders in shallow water emulating aquatic vegetation and (ii) reassess the optimum arrangement of tidal turbines to generate power in a tidal channel. Comparison with laboratory-based data indicates a maximum obstacle resistance (or minimum porosity) for which the present theoretical model is valid. When the obstacle resistance is above this threshold the shallow water equations do not provide an adequate representation of the flow, and the theoretical model over-predicts the core flow passing through the obstacle. The second application of the model confirms that natural bed resistance increases the power extraction potential for a partial tidal fence in a shallow channel and alters the optimum arrangement of turbines within the fence.

Abstract
Morphometric (i.e., shape and size) differences in the anatomy of cortical structures are associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Such differences can be quantized and detected by a powerful tool called Labeled Cortical Distance Map (LCDM). The LCDM method provides distances of labeled gray matter (GM) voxels from the GM/white matter (WM) surface for specific cortical structures (or tissues). Here we describe a method to analyze morphometric variability in the particular tissue using LCDM distances. To extract more of the information provided by LCDM distances, we perform pooling and censoring of LCDM distances. In particular, we employ Brown-Forsythe (BF) test of homogeneity of variance (HOV) on the LCDM distances. HOV analysis of pooled distances provides an overall analysis of morphometric variability of the LCDMs due to the disease in question, while the HOV analysis of censored distances suggests the location(s) of significant variation in these differences (i.e., at which distance from the GM/WM surface the morphometric variability starts to be significant). We also check for the influence of assumption violations on the HOV analysis of LCDM distances. In particular, we demonstrate that BF HOV test is robust to assumption violations such as the non-normality and within sample dependence of the residuals from the median for pooled and censored distances and are robust to data aggregation which occurs in analysis of censored distances. We recommend HOV analysis as a complementary tool to the analysis of distribution/location differences. We also apply the methodology on simulated normal and exponential data sets and assess the performance of the methods when more of the underlying assumptions are satisfied. We illustrate the methodology on a real data example, namely, LCDM distances of GM voxels in ventral medial prefrontal cortices (VMPFCs) to see the effects of depression or being of high risk to depression on the morphometry of VMPFCs. The methodology used here is also valid for morphometric analysis of other cortical structures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) accumulations are commonly seen in the neck-related muscles of the surgical and non-surgical sides after surgery with neck dissection (ND) for oral cancers, which leads to radiologists having difficulty in diagnosing the lesions. To examine the alterations in 18F-FDG accumulation in neck-related muscles of patients after ND for oral cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS 18F-FDG accumulations on positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) in neck-related muscles were retrospectively analyzed after surgical dissection of cervical lymph nodes in oral cancers. RESULTS According to the extent of ND of cervical lymph nodes, the rate of patients with 18F-FDG-PET-positive areas increased in the trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, and posterior neck muscles of the surgical and/or non-surgical sides. In addition, SUVmax of 18F-FDG-PET-positive areas in the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles were increased according to the extent of the ND. CONCLUSIONS In evaluating 18F-FDG accumulations after ND for oral cancers, we should pay attention to the 18F-FDG distributions in neck-related muscles including the non-surgical side as false-positive findings.

Abstract
We present a modification of Matrix Product State time evolution to simulate the propagation of signal fronts on infinite one-dimensional systems. We restrict the calculation to a window moving along with a signal, which by the Lieb-Robinson bound is contained within a light cone. Signal fronts can be studied unperturbed and with high precision for much longer times than on finite systems. Entanglement inside the window is naturally small, greatly lowering computational effort. We investigate the time evolution of the transverse field Ising (TFI) model and of the S = 1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet in their symmetry broken phases after several different local quantum quenches. In both models, we observe distinct magnetisation plateaus at the signal front for very large times, resembling those previously observed for the particle density of tight binding (TB) fermions. We show that the normalised difference to the magnetisation of the ground state exhibits similar scaling behaviour as the density of TB fermions. In the XXZ model there is an additional internal structure of the signal front due to pairing, and wider plateaus with tight binding scaling exponents for the normalised excess magnetisation. We also observe parameter dependent interaction effects between individual plateaus, resulting in a slight spatial compression of the plateau widths. In the TFI model, we additionally find that for an initial Jordan-Wigner domain wall state, the complete time evolution of the normalised excess longitudinal magnetisation agrees exactly with the particle density of TB fermions.

Abstract
Aberrant pancreas is used to describe ectopic pancreatic tissue lying outside its normal location with no anatomic or vascular connection to the pancreas proper. Patients with aberrant pancreas are usually asymptomatic, so aberrant pancreas are typically discovered incidentally during endoscopy, surgery, or autopsy. This time, we report a case of gastric aberrant pancreas bleeding was repeated and endoscopic hemostasis was difficult. A 22-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with a complaint of epigastric pain and melena. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) revealed a submucosal tumor with a bleeding ulcer at the anterior wall of the antrum in the stomach, and diagnosed it as an aberrant pancreas. It was hard to stop bleeding by in total 7 times endoscopic hemostasis and anemia was gradually progressed, so partial gastrectomy was performed. This gastric tumor measured 40 mm × 30 mm × 20 mm and had a severe ulcerative change. The pathological diagnosis was aberrant pancreas with Langerhans islet, acinous cells and excretory duct. (Heinrich type) Until December 2013 in Japan, 13 cases of gastric aberrant pancreas with bleeding have been reported and in these, a surgery was done in 11 cases. In gastric aberrant pancreas cases with ulcer formation like this case, endoscopic hemostasis is expected to be difficult, and surgery is necessary. Hence, early accurate diagnosis by EUS is a very important to decide better treatment plan.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We report a case of low-risk stomach gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) which has been under a long-term observation, obtaining from this experience knowledge useful in determining the treatment formula for this disease. RESULTS During the observation for 6 years, no such change as ulcer formation was observed in the appearance of the tumor. The measurement of tumor diameter, however, showed gradual growth of maximum tumor diameter from 2.7 to 5.0 cm. When the changes in the diameter of tumor during this period is plotted, taking the timeon the horizontal axis and the tumor diameter on the vertical axis, the growth of the tumor can be approximated with a secondary function, making it possible to estimate the developmental period of the GIST concerned from the approximated secondary function. Thus, the developmental period in this case was estimated to go back 19 years before the time when it was discovered for the 1(st) time. Further, it was considered that the coefficient of the secondary function represents the rate of tumor growth, and that comparison with this coefficient contributed to the evaluation of malignancy stage of the GIST concerned. CONCLUSION The growth curve predicting the growth of tumor could be depicted by measuring the diameter of the tumor in GIST twice or more at an interval of 6-12 months with EUS, and it was thought that this was utilizable for determining treatment formula for GISTs.

Abstract
This study retrospectively investigated the clinical features and risk factors of allergic reactions induced by oxaliplatin administration. This study investigated the incidence of allergic reactions and analysed the background and laboratory data in patients with colorectal cancer treated with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy at Kyushu Medical Center between April 2012 and September 2012. A total of 62 patients were included in this study. The number of patients in the allergic and non-allergic groups was 7 and 55 respectively. The incidence of allergic reactions was 11.3%. We compared the patients' characteristics and laboratory data between the two groups and found that the average dose of dexamethasone in the allergic group was significantly lower than that observed in the non-allergic group (P = 0.0111). Furthermore, the incidence of allergic reactions in the group that received prophylaxis of less than 12 mg of dexamethasone was significantly higher than that observed in the group that received more than 12 mg of dexamethasone (P = 0.0103). In conclusion, a lower dexamethasone dose is a possible risk factor for allergic reactions induced by the administration of oxaliplatin; however, given the retrospective design used in this study, further validation of this finding is warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To elucidate the points that require attention when interpreting fluorine-18-labelled fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ((18)F-FDG)/positron emission tomography (PET) images by demonstration of (18)F-FDG accumulation in various areas of the oral cavity other than primary lesions in patients with oral cancers. METHODS (18)F-FDG accumulations with a maximal standardized uptake value of over 2.5 in various areas of the oral cavity other than primary lesions were identified in 82 patients with oral cancers. RESULTS (18)F-FDG/PET-positive areas, excluding primary tumours, included the front intrinsic muscles of the tongue (89.0%), upper and lower marginal parts of the orbicularis oris muscle (64.6%), sublingual glands, palatine tonsil, pharyngeal tonsil, and lingual tonsil. In addition, some areas in the jaws also showed accumulation. CONCLUSIONS In patients with oral cancers, areas of (18)F-FDG accumulation in the oral cavity should be precisely identified and appropriately diagnosed, because accumulations can be seen in areas other than the primary tumour.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether a proposed suite of generic tests for digital radiography (DR) detectors could be reduced to practice. METHODS MATLAB software was developed to analyze images according to descriptions in a document drafted by the TG150 Detector Subgroup. Forprocessing images were acquired directly from the acquisition stations of three DR and one Computed Radiography system. Images included flat-field exposures at the manufacturer's calibration condition, twice the exposure, ½ the exposure, and a low exposure, plus three images of a lead bar pattern in different orientations, also at the calibration condition. The flat field images were analyzed to determine Detector Response; Gain Correction; Signal, Noise, and Signal-to-noise (SNR) Uniformity; SNR Magnitude; and Anomalous Detector Element (del) Identification. The program also allowed visual inspection for evaluation of collimation and non-uniformity. Bar pattern images were analyzed to evaluate spatial resolution by a variance method. RESULTS Acquisition revealed a number of pitfalls. Some manufacturers have multiple calibration points. For-processing images are not directly available from all systems, and PACS may modify them from their original state. The orientation of the flat field with respect to the anodecathode axis may not be defined by the manufacturer. Care must be taken to ensure collimation outside the edges of detectors, or the software must exclude collimator shadows. The matrix size of images differs among manufacturers, so the size of the region of interest (ROI) for analysis varies from the default size of 100×100 dels, as does the number of ROIs. The approach for dealing with edges and ROIs may affect the numerical results. The detector response function may also affect the interpretation of results. CONCLUSIONS The software successfully implements most of the detector tests recommended by TG150. Comparison of these results with those of the parallel effort will validate the draft test definition.

Abstract
Extremely low levels of serum hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA can be detected by COBAS TaqMan HCV test. To investigate whether the COBAS TaqMan HCV test is useful for measuring rapid virological response (RVR) and early virological response (EVR) to predict sustained virological response (SVR), we compared the virological response to PEG-IFN-alfa 2a plus RBV in 76 patients infected with HCV genotype 1 when undetectable HCV RNA by the COBAS TaqMan HCV test was used, with those when below 1.7 log IU/mL HCV RNA by COBAS TaqMan HCV test was used, which corresponded to the use of traditional methods. Among the 76 patients, 28 (36.8%) had SVR, 13 (17.1%) relapsed, 19 (25.0%) did not respond, and 16 (21.0%) discontinued the treatment due to side effects. The positive predictive values for SVR based on undetectable HCV RNA by COBAS TaqMan HCV test at 24 weeks after the end of treatment [10/10 (100%) at week 4, 21/23 (91.3%) at week 8 and 26/33 (78.7%) at week 12] were superior to those based on <1.7 log IU/mL HCV RNA [17/19 (89.4%) at week 4, 27/38 (71.0%) at week 8, and 27/43 (62.7%) at week 12]. The negative predictive values for SVR based on <1.7 log IU/mL HCV RNA by COBAS TaqMan HCV test [46/57 (80.7%) at week 4, 37/38 (97.3%) at week 8, and 32/33 (96.9%) at week 12] were superior to those based on undetectable HCV RNA [48/66 (72.7%) at week 4, 46/53 (86.7%) at week 8, and 41/43 (95.3%) at week 12]. The utilization of both undetectable RNA and <1.7 log IU/mL HCV RNA by COBAS TaqMan HCV test is useful and could predict SVR and non-SVR patients with greater accuracy.

Abstract
Recent good results of cardiovascular surgery have led to expansion of its indication to elderly patients and patients with serious complications. Such patients may have serious respiratory complications after cardiac surgery and need to undergo tracheostomy relatively early in the postoperative period. Although the full sternotomy approach is the standard in almost all cardiac surgeries, superficial and deep sternal infections are rather common after early tracheostomy in full sternotomy patients. The lower partial sternotomy approach is a safer and more useful procedure in patients who will need tracheostomy in the early period after cardiac surgery. We report on 2 patients who were successfully tracheostomized within a week after cardiac surgery, with a review of the literature.

Abstract
Neuropsychiatric disorders have been demonstrated to manifest shape differences in cortical structures. Labeled Cortical Distance Mapping (LCDM) is a powerful tool in quantifying such morphometric differences and characterizes the morphometry of the laminar cortical mantle of cortical structures. Specifically, LCDM data are distances of labeled gray matter (GM) voxels with respect to the gray/white matter cortical surface. Volumes and descriptive measures (such as means and variances for each subject) based on LCDM distances provide descriptive summary information on some of the shape characteristics. However, additional morphometrics are contained in the data and their analysis may provide additional clues to underlying differences in cortical characteristics. To use more of this information, we pool (merge) LCDM distances from subjects in the same group. These pooled distances can help detect morphometric differences between groups, but do not provide information about the locations of such differences in the tissue in question. In this article, we check for the influence of the assumption violations on the analysis of pooled LCDM distances. We demonstrate that the classical parametric tests are robust to the non-normality and within sample dependence of LCDM distances and nonparametric tests are robust to within sample dependence of LCDM distances. We specify the types of alternatives for which the tests are more sensitive. We also show that the pooled LCDM distances provide powerful results for group differences in distribution of LCDM distances. As an illustrative example, we use GM in the ventral medial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) in subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD), subjects at high risk (HR) of MDD, and healthy subjects. Significant morphometric differences were found in VMPFC due to MDD or being at HR. In particular, the analysis indicated that distances in left and right VMPFCs tend to decrease due to MDD or being at HR, possibly as a result of thinning. The methodology can also be applied to other cortical structures.

Abstract
We report the case of a 31-year-old male with enlarged kidneys and glomerulocystic kidney disease (GCKD). The patient had no family history of renal disease or other diseases. On initial presentation he complained of poor eyesight, and hypertensive retinopathy and elevated serum creatinine (5.0 mg/dl) were found at that time. Renal biopsy showed cystic dilatation of Bowman's capsule and atrophy of the glomerular tuft. Thus, an adult case of sporadic GCKD was diagnosed. Based on previous reports, kidney size in patients with adult type GCKD varies from small to large. Our patient's kidneys are the largest ever reported (right kidney was 22 cm×10 cm, left kidney was 19 cm×10 cm). A review of the literature dealing with sporadic adult GCKD suggested that it is difficult to diagnose this disease early in its course.

Abstract
We have previously shown that joint distraction and movement with a hinged external fixation device for 12 weeks was useful for repairing a large articular cartilage defect in a rabbit model. We have now investigated the results after six months and one year. The device was applied to 16 rabbits who underwent resection of the articular cartilage and subchondral bone from the entire tibial plateau. In group A (nine rabbits) the device was applied for six months. In group B (seven rabbits) it was in place for six months, after which it was removed and the animals were allowed to move freely for an additional six months. The cartilage remained sound in all rabbits. The areas of type II collagen-positive staining and repaired soft tissue were larger in group B than in group A. These findings provide evidence of long-term persistence of repaired cartilage with this technique and that weight-bearing has a positive effect on the quality of the cartilage.

Abstract
We have fabricated Nb nanogap electrodes using a combination of molecular lithography and electron beam lithography. Au nano-particles with anchor molecules were placed in the gap, the width of which could be controlled on a molecular scale (approximately 2 nm). Three different anchor molecules which connect the Au nano-particles and the electrodes were tested to investigate their contact resistance, and a local gate was fabricated underneath the Au nano-particles. The electrical transport measurements at liquid helium temperatures indicated single electron transistor (SET) characteristics with a charging energy of about approximately 5 meV, and a clear indication of the effect of superconducting electrodes was not observed, possibly due to the large tunnel resistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish an appropriate steroid treatment regimen for autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). METHODS A retrospective survey of AIP treatment was conducted in 17 centres in Japan. The main outcome measures were rate of remission and relapse. RESULTS Of 563 patients with AIP, 459 (82%) received steroid treatment. The remission rate of steroid-treated AIP was 98%, which was significantly higher than that of patients without steroid treatment (74%, 77/104; p<0.001). Steroid treatment was given for obstructive jaundice (60%), abdominal pain (11%), associated extrapancreatic lesions except the biliary duct (11%), and diffuse enlargement of the pancreas (10%). There was no relationship between the period necessary to achieve remission and the initial dose (30 mg/day vs 40 mg/day) of prednisolone. Maintenance steroid treatment was given in 377 (82%) of 459 steroid-treated patients, and steroid treatment was stopped in 104 patients. The relapse rate of patients with AIP on maintenance treatment was 23% (63/273), which was significantly lower than that of patients who stopped maintenance treatment (34%, 35/104; p = 0.048). From the start of steroid treatment, 56% (55/99) relapsed within 1 year and 92% (91/99) relapsed within 3 years. Of the 89 relapsed patients, 83 (93%) received steroid re-treatment, and steroid re-treatment was effective in 97% of them. CONCLUSIONS The major indication for steroid treatment in AIP is the presence of symptoms. An initial prednisolone dose of 0.6 mg/kg/day, is recommend, which is then reduced to a maintenance dose over a period of 3-6 months. Maintenance treatment with low-dose steroid reduces but dose not eliminate relapses.

Abstract
The antiprogestin mifepristone has been demonstrated to inhibit the growth of R3327HI rat prostatic carcinoma. A comparable antitumor effect of onapristone (ON) on rat Dunning tumors was found in our laboratories. We found the localization of progesterone (P4) receptors (PR) in prostate and prostatic tumors. These findings suggest the involvement of P4 in the mechanism of hormone-dependent growth of prostate and tumors. To study the influence of P4 on the growth of ventral (VP) and dorsolateral prostate (DLP), orchiectomized rats were treated (s.c.) daily with P4 (0.3, 1.0, 3.0 or 10.0 mg), dihydrotestosterone (DHT, 0.05 mg), estradiol (E2, 3.0 microg), ON (3.0 mg), ICI 182780 (1.0 mg) or flutamide (FL, 3.0 mg) for 12 days. One day after the last treatment, animals were sacrificed, and the organ weight of VP and DLP was determined. P4 increased the organ weight of VP and DLP in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast to DHT, which preferentially stimulated the growth of VP, P4 led rather to an increase in the weight of DLP. The effect of P4 on the DLP was enhanced by a simultaneous application of DHT or E2. The antiprogestin ON and the pure antiestrogen ICI 182780 had no appreciable effect on the P4-induced growth of VP and DLP. ON inhibited, however, the E2/P4-induced growth of DLP without affecting the growth of the VP. In contrast the antiandrogen FL suppressed the stimulatory effect of P4 on both the VP and DLP. These findings suggest that the stimulatory effect of P4 on the rat DLP may be partly due to androgenic products derived from P4 and may be also mediated by PR.

Abstract
The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition of the two-dimensional frustrated Ising model on a hyperbolic lattice is investigated by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. The model contains a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and a competing antiferromagnetic interaction J2 . A mean-field-like second-order phase transition is observed when the ratio kappa=J_{2}J_{1} is less than 0.203. In the region 0.203<kappa<14 , the spontaneous magnetization is discontinuous at the transition temperature. Such tricritical behavior suggests that the phase transitions on hyperbolic lattices need not always be mean-field-like.
