Anchoring of Metal Complexes on Au25 Nanocluster for Enhanced Photocoupled Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Atomically precise Au nanoclusters (NCs) with discrete energy levels can be used as photosensitizers for CO2 reduction. However, tight ligand capping of Au NCs hinders CO2 adsorption on its active sites. Here, a new hybrid material is obtained by anchoring of thiol functionalized terpyridine metal complexes (metal=Ru, Ni, Fe, Co) on Au NCs by ligand exchange reactions (LERs). The anchoring of Ru and Ni complexes on Au25 NC (Au25 -Ru and Au25 -Ni) leads to adequate CO2 to CO conversion for photocoupled electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (PECR) in terms of high selectivity, with Faradaic efficiency of CO (FECO ) exceeding 90 % in a wide potential range, remarkable activity (CO production rate up to two times higher than that for pristine Au25 PET18 ) and extremely large turnover frequencies (TOFs, 63012 h-1 at -0.97 V for Au25 -Ru and 69989 h-1 at -1.07 V vs. RHE for Au25 -Ni). Moreover, PECR stability test indicates the excellent long-term stability of the modified NCs in contrast with pristine Au NCs. The present approach offers a novel strategy to enhance PECR activity and selectivity, as well as to improve the stability of Au NCs under light illumination, which paves the way for highly active and stable Au NCs catalysts.

Methylene C(sp3 )-H Arylation Enables the Stereoselective Synthesis and Structure Revision of Indidene Natural Products

The divergent synthesis of two indane polyketides of the indidene family, namely (±)-indidene A (11 steps, 1.7 %) and (+)-indidene C (13 steps, 1.3 %), is reported. The synthesis of the trans-configured common indane intermediate was enabled by palladium(0)-catalyzed methylene C(sp3 )-H arylation, which was performed in both racemic and enantioselective (e.r. 99 : 1) modes. Further elaboration of this common intermediate by nickel-catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling allowed the rapid installation of the aroyl moiety of (±)-indidene A. In parallel, the biphenyl system of (±)- and (+)-indidene C was constructed by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. These investigations led us to revise the structures of indidenes B and C.

Very Low Temperature CO Oxidation over Atomically Precise Au25 Nanoclusters on MnO2

Atomically precise Au25 nanoclusters have garnered significant interest in the field of heterogeneous catalysis due to their remarkable activity and selectivity. However, for the extensively studied reaction of low-temperature CO oxidation, their performance has not been competitive compared to other known gold nanocatalysts. To address this, we deposited Au25(SR)18 (R = CH2CH2Ph) nanoclusters onto a manganese oxide support (Au25/MnO2), resulting in a very stable and highly active catalyst. By optimizing the pretreatment temperature, we were able to significantly enhance the performance of the Au25/MnO2 catalyst, which outperformed most other gold catalysts. Impressively, 100% conversion of CO was achieved at temperatures as low as -50 °C, with 50% conversion being reached below -70 °C. Furthermore, the existence of ligands could also influence the negative apparent activation energy observed at intermediate temperatures. Analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques indicated that the Au25 nanoclusters remained stable on the catalyst surface even after pretreatment at high temperatures. In-situ modulation excitation spectroscopy (MES) spectra also confirmed that the Au cluster was the active site for CO oxidation, highlighting the potential of atomically precise Au25 nanoclusters as primary active sites at very low temperatures.

Directing Intrinsic Chirality in Gold Nanoclusters: Preferential Formation of Stable Enantiopure Clusters in High Yield and Experimentally Unveiling the "Super" Chirality of Au144

Chiral gold nanoclusters offer significant potential for exploring chirality at a fundamental level and for exploiting their applications in sensing and catalysis. However, their widespread use is impeded by low yields in synthesis, tedious separation procedures of their enantiomeric forms, and limited thermal stability. In this study, we investigated the direct synthesis of enantiopure chiral nanoclusters using the chiral ligand 2-MeBuSH in the fabrication of Au25, Au38, and Au144 nanoclusters. Notably, this approach leads to the unexpected formation of intrinsically chiral clusters with high yields for chiral Au38 and Au144 nanoclusters. Experimental evaluation of chiral activity by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy corroborates previous theoretical calculations, highlighting the stronger CD signal exhibited by Au144 compared to Au38 or Au25. Furthermore, the formation of a single enantiomeric form is experimentally confirmed by comparing it with intrinsically chiral Au38(2-PET)24 (2-PET: 2-phenylethanethiol) and is supported theoretically for both Au38 and Au144. Moreover, the prepared chiral clusters show stability against diastereoisomerization, up to temperatures of 80 °C. Thus, our findings not only demonstrate the selective preparation of enantiopure, intrinsically chiral, and highly stable thiolate-protected Au nanoclusters through careful ligand design but also support the predicted "super" chirality in the Au144 cluster, encompassing hierarchical chirality in ligands, staple configuration, and core structure.

Unveiling the Configurational Landscape of Carbamate: Paving the Way for Designing Functional Sequence-Defined Polymers

Carbamate is an emerging class of a polymer backbone for constructing sequence-defined, abiotic polymers. It is expected that new functional materials can be de novo designed by controlling the primary polycarbamate sequence. While amino acids have been actively studied as building blocks for protein folding and peptide self-assembly, carbamates have not been widely investigated from this perspective. Here, we combined infrared (IR), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the conformation of carbamate monomer units in a nonpolar, aprotic environment (chloroform). Compared with amino acid building blocks, carbamates are more rigid, presumably due to the extended delocalization of π-electrons on the backbones. Cis configurations of the amide bond can be energetically stable in carbamates, whereas peptides often assume trans configurations at low energies. This study lays an essential foundation for future developments of carbamate-based sequence-defined polymer material design.

Engineering ligand chemistry on Au25 nanoclusters: from unique ligand addition to precisely controllable ligand exchange

Au25 nanoclusters (NCs) protected by 18 thiol-ligands (Au25SR18, SR is a thiolate ligand) are the prototype of atomically precise thiolate-protected gold NCs. Studies concerning the alteration of the number of surface ligands for a given Au25SR18 NC are scarce. Herein we report the conversion of hydrophobic Au25PET18 (PET = 2-phenylethylthiolate) NCs to Au25SR19 [Au25PET18(metal complex)1] induced by ligand exchange reactions (LERs) with thiolated terpyridine-metal complexes (metal complex, metal = Ru, Fe, Co, Ni) under mild conditions (room temperature and low amounts of incoming ligands). Interestingly, we found that the ligand addition reaction on Au25PET18 NCs is metal dependent. Ru and Co complexes preferentially lead to the formation of Au25SR19 whereas Fe and Ni complexes favor ligand exchange reactions. High-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) was used to determine the molecular formula of Au25SR19 NCs. The photophysical properties of Au25PET18(Ru complex)1 are distinctly different from Au25PET18. The absorption spectrum is drastically changed upon addition of the extra ligand and the photoluminescence quantum yield of Au25PET18(Ru complex)1 is 14 times and 3 times higher than that of pristine Au25PET18 and Au25PET17(Ru complex)1, respectively. Interestingly, only one surface ligand (PET) could be substituted by the metal complex when neutral Au25PET18 was used for ligand exchange whereas two ligands could be exchanged when starting with negatively charged Au25PET18. This charge dependence provides a strategy to precisely control the number of exchanged ligands at the surface of NCs.

Advanced Catalyst for CO2 Photo-Reduction: From Controllable Product Selectivity by Architecture Engineering to Improving Charge Transfer Using Stabilized Au Clusters

Despite enormous progress and improvement in photocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR), the development of photocatalysts that suppress H₂ evolution reaction (HER), during CO₂ RR, remains still a challenge. Here, new insight is presented for controllable CO₂ RR selectivity by tuning the architecture of the photocatalyst. Au/carbon nitride with planar structure (p Au/CN) showed high activity for HER with 87% selectivity. In contrast, the same composition with a yolk@shell structure (Y@S Au@CN) exhibited high selectivity of carbon products by suppressing the HER to 26% under visible light irradiation. Further improvement for CO₂ RR activity was achieved by a surface decoration of the yolk@shell structure with Au₂₅ (PET)₁₈ clusters as favorable electron acceptors, resulting in longer charge separation in Au@CN/Au_c Y@S structure. Finally, by covering the structure with graphene layers, the designed catalyst maintained high photostability during light illumination and showed high photocatalytic efficiency. The optimized Au@CN/Au_c /G Y@S structure displays high photocatalytic CO₂ RR selectivity of 88%, where the CO and CH₄ generations during 8 h are 494 and 198 µmol/gcat., respectively. This approach combining architecture engineering and composition modification provides a new strategy with improved activity and controllable selectivity toward targeting applications in energy conversion catalysis.

Multistate Aggregation-Induced Chiroptical Properties of Enantiopure Disulfide-Mediated BisPyrene Macrocycles

A chiral bispyrene macrocycle designed for exclusive intermolecular excimer fluorescence upon aggregation was synthesized by a double hydrothiolation of a bis enol ether macrocycle followed by intramolecular oxidation of free thiols. Unusually high stereoselectivity was achieved for the thiol-ene additions under templated conditions and Et3B/O2 radical initiation. After enantiomer separation (chiral stationary phase HPLC), aqueous conditions provoked aggregation. Detailed structural evolution was afforded by ECD/CPL monitoring. Three regimes can be observed and characterized by strong modifications in chiroptical patterns under, at, or above a 70% H2O:THF threshold. In luminescence, high glum dissymmetry factors values were obtained, up to 0.022, as well as a double sign inversion of CPL signals during the aggregation, a behavior rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. Langmuir layers of enantiopure disulfide macrocycles were formed at the air-water interface and transferred onto solid substrates to afford Langmuir-Blodgett films, which were then studied by AFM and UV/ECD/fluorescence/CPL.

Influence of Time Scale on the Reaction Mechanism of CO Oxidation over a Au/TiO2 Catalystt

Knowledge of the reaction mechanism is key for rational catalyst improvement. Traditionally mechanistic studies focus on structure and the reaction conditions like temperature, pH, pressure, etc, whereas the time dimension is often overlooked. Here, we demonstrate the influence of time on the mechanism of a catalytic reaction. A dual catalytic mechanism was identified for the CO oxidation over Au/TiO2 by time-resolved infrared spectroscopy coupled with modulation excitation spectroscopy. During the first seconds CO on the gold particles is the only reactive species. As the reaction proceeds the redox properties of TiO2 dominate the catalytic activity through electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). CO induces the reduction and reconstruction of TiO2 whereas oxygen leads to its oxidation. The activity of the catalyst follows the spectroscopic signature of the EMSI. These findings demonstrate the power of studying the short-time kinetics for mechanistic studies.

Intracluster ligand rearrangement: an NMR-based thermodynamic study

Ligand and metal exchange reactions are powerful methods to tailor the properties of atomically precise metal nanoclusters. Hence, a deep understanding of the mechanisms behind the dynamics that rule the ligand monolayer is crucial for its specific functionalization. Combining variable-temperature NMR experiments and dynamic-NMR simulations, we extract the thermodynamic activation parameters of a new exchange reaction: the intracluster ligand rearrangement between the two symmetry-unique positions in [Ag₂₅(DMBT)₁₈]^- and [Ag₂₄Au(DMBT)₁₈]^- clusters. We report for the first time that this peculiar intracluster modification does not seem to proceed via metal-sulphur bond breaking and follows a first-order rate law, being therefore a process independent from the well-described collisional ligand exchange.

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett Films of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles

Recently the focus of the Langmuir-Blodgett technique as a method of choice to transfer monolayers from the air/water interface onto solid substrates in a controllable fashion has been shifting toward purely hydrophobic gold and silver nanoparticles. The fundamental interactions between particles that become relevant in the absence of polar groups range from dispersive attractions from the metal cores and repulsions between ligand shells to weaker entropic factors. The layer evolution is explored, starting with interfacial self-assembly upon solution spreading and domain and circular island formation, which subsequently merge into a complete monolayer and finally form multilayers or macroscopic wrinkles. Moreover, structural properties such as the core:ligand size ratio are investigated in the context of dispersive forces, whereby the nanoparticles with small cores and long ligands tend not to aggregate sufficiently to produce continuous films, those with large cores and short ligands were found to aggregate irreversibly, and those in between the two extremes were concluded to be able to form highly organized crystalline films. Similarly, the characteristics of the spreading solution such as the concentration and the solvent type crucially influence the film crystallinity, with the deciding factor being the degree of affinity between the capping ligand and the solvent used for spreading. Finally, the most common strategies employed to enhance the mechanical stability of the metal nanoparticle films along with the recent attempts to functionalize the particles in attempts to improve their applicability in the industry are summarized and evaluated in relation to their future prospects. One of the objectives of this feature article is to elucidate the differences between hydrophobic metal nanoparticles and typical amphiphilic molecules that the majority of the literature in the field describes and to familiarize the reader with the knowledge required to design Langmuir-Blodgett nanoparticle systems as well as the strategies to improve existing ones.

Exceptionally Stable Dimers and Trimers of Au25 Clusters Linked with a Bidentate Dithiol: Synthesis, Structure and Chirality Study

A bidentate chiral dithiol (diBINAS) is utilised to bridge Au₂₅ nanoclusters to form oligomers. Separation by size allows the isolation of fractions that are stable thanks to the bidentate nature of the linker. The structure of the products is elucidated by small-angle X-ray scattering and calculated using density functional theory. Additional structural details are studied by diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Significant changes in the optical properties are analysed by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies, with the latter demonstrating a strong emission enhancement. Furthermore, the emergent chiral characteristics are studied by circular dichroism. Due to the geometry constraints of the nanocluster assemblies, diBINAS can be regarded as a templating molecule, taking a step towards the directed self-assembly of metal clusters.

Final Products of One-Electron Oxidation of Cyclic Dipeptides Containing Methionine Investigated by IRMPD Spectroscopy: Does the Free Radical Choose the Final Compound?

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and the hydroxyl radical (^•OH) have specific functions in biological processes, while their uncontrolled production and reactivity are known to be determining factors in pathophysiology. Methionine (Met) residues act as endogenous antioxidants, when they are oxidized into methionine sulfoxide (MetSO), thus depleting ROS and protecting the protein. We employed tandem mass spectrometry combined with IR multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy to study the oxidation induced by OH radicals produced by γ radiolysis on model cyclic dipeptides c(LMetLMet), c(LMetDMet), and c(GlyMet). Our aim was to characterize the geometries of the oxidized peptides in the gas phase and to understand the relationship between the structure of the 2-center 3-electron (2c-3e) free radical formed in the first step of the oxidation process and the final compound. Density functional theory calculations were performed to characterize the lowest energy structures of the final product of oxidation and to interpret the IR spectra. Collision-induced dissociation tandem mass spectrometry (CID-MS²) experiments of oxidized c(LMetLMet)H⁺ and c(LMetDMet)H⁺ led to the loss of one or two oxidized sulfenic acid molecules, indicating that the addition of one or two oxygen atoms occurs on the sulfur atom of both methionine side chains and no sulfone formation was observed. The CID-MS² fragmentation mass spectrum of oxidized c(GlyMet)H⁺ showed only the loss of one oxidized sulfenic acid molecule. Thus, the final products of oxidation are the same regardless of the structure of the precursor sulfur-centered free radical.

Crystallization of SrAl12O19 Nanocrystals from Amorphous Submicrometer Particles

Advanced instrumentation and modern analysis tools such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have led to phenomenal progress in understanding crystallization, in particular from solution, which is a prerequisite for the design-based preparation of a target crystal. Nevertheless, little has been understood about the crystallization pathway under high-temperature annealing (HTA) conditions. Metal oxide crystals are prominent materials that are usually obtained via HTA. Despite the widespread application of hydro-/solvothermal methods on the laboratory scale, HTA is the preferred method in many industries for the mass production of metal oxide crystals. However, poor control over the morphology and grain sizes of these crystals under extreme HTA conditions limits their applications. Here, applying ex-situ TEM, the transformation of a single amorphous spherical submicrometer precursor particle of SrAl12O19 (SA6) at 1150 °C toward a nanosized thermodynamically favored hexagonal crystal is explored. It is illustrated in real space, step by step, how both kinetic and thermodynamic factors contribute to this faceting and morphology evolution. These results demonstrate a nonclassical nucleation and growth process consisting of densification, crystallite domain formation, oriented attachment, surface nucleation, 2-dimensional (2D) growth, and surface diffusion of the atoms to eventually result in the formation of a hexagonal platelet crystal. The TEM images further delineate a parent crystal driving the crystal lattice and morphological orientation of a network of interconnected platelets.

Effect of the Combination of Gold Nanoparticles and Polyelectrolyte Layers on SERS Measurements

In this study, polyelectrolyte (PE) layers are deposited on substrates made by glass covered with an array of gold nanoparticles (GNPs). In particular, the samples studied have 0 PE layers (GGPE0), 3 PE layers (GGPE3), 11 PE layers (GGPE11), and 21 PE layers (GGPE21). All samples have been studied by micro-Raman spectroscopy. An acetic acid solution (10% v/v) has been used as a standard solution in order to investigate the SERS effect induced by different numbers of PE layers in each sample. The Surface Enhancement Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) effect correlating to the number of PE layers deposited on the samples has been shown. This effect is explained in terms of an increase in the interaction between the photon of the laser source and the plasmonic band of the GNPs due to a change of the permittivity of the surrounding medium around the GNPs. The trends of the ratios of the intensities of the Raman bands of the acetic acid solution (acetic acid and water molecules) on the band at 1098 cm-1 ascribed to the substrates increase, and the number of PE layers increases.

The Atomically Precise Gold/Captopril Nanocluster Au25(Capt)18 Gains Anticancer Activity by Inhibiting Mitochondrial Oxidative Phosphorylation

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are an emerging class of quantum-sized nanomaterials with well-defined molecular structures and unique biophysical properties, rendering them highly attractive for biological applications. We set out to study the impact of different ligand shells of atomically similar nanoclusters on cellular recognition and response. To understand the effects of atomically precise nanoclusters with identical composition on cells, we selected two different water-soluble gold nanoclusters protected with captopril (Capt) and glutathione (GSH): Au₂₅(Capt)₁₈ (CNC) and Au₂₅(GSH)₁₈ (GNC), respectively. We demonstrated that a change of the ligand of the cluster completely changes its biological functions. Whereas both nanoclusters are capable of internalization, only CNC exhibits remarkable cytotoxicity, more specifically on cancer cells. CNC shows enhanced cytotoxicity by inhibiting the OXPHOS of mitochondria, possibly by inhibiting the ATP synthase complex of the electron transport chain (ETC), and by initiating the leakage of electrons into the mitochondrial lumen. The resulting increase in both mitochondrial and total cellular ROS triggers cell death indicated by the appearance of cellular markers of apoptosis. Remarkably, this effect of nanoclusters is independent of any external light source excitation. Our findings point to the prevailing importance of the ligand shell for applications of atomically precise nanoclusters in biology and medicine.

Evidence for stereoelectronic effects in ligand exchange reactions on Au25 nanoclusters

Ligand exchange reaction (LER) is an important post-synthesis strategy and has been studied widely. The mechanism of this dynamic process for gold nanoclusters proved to be associative (SN2). Many factors affect the LER of clusters, including stability, solubility, chirality, electronic properties and so on. Some of these factors are not well understood and need further exploration. Here, we use a chiral fluoro-substituted ligand (R)-5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-octafluoro-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-2,2'-dithiol (8F-R-BINAS) to investigate the stereoelectronic and stereospecific effects during LER on achiral Au₂₅ cluster. It is demonstrated that the fluorine-substituted BINAS significantly decreases the LER reactivity both at the molecule and the related cluster level. The stereoelectronic effect is global and can be transmitted to the cluster surface. In contrast, the stereospecific effect is marginal.

Hygroline derivatives from Schizanthus tricolor and their anti-trypanosomatid and antiplasmodial activities

Chemical investigation of the alkaloid extract of the aerial parts of Schizanthus tricolor led to the targeted isolation of 26 hygroline derivatives of which 20 were fully characterized. They have not yet been described in the literature and their structures were established by 1D and 2D NMR, UV and IR spectroscopy, and HRESIMS. The configuration was determined by Gauge-Independent Atomic Orbital NMR chemical shift calculations supported by the advanced statistical method DP4 plus, vibrational circular dichroism, and measurement of optical rotation. Their anti-trypanosomatid, antiplasmodial and cytotoxic activities were measured. Several compounds exhibited low micromolar activity against Plasmodium falciparum. None of the identified molecules was cytotoxic.

Predictive optical photoabsorption of Ag24Au(DMBT)18 - via efficient TDDFT simulations

We report a computational study via time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) methods of the photo-absorption spectrum of an atomically precise monolayer-protected cluster (MPC), the Ag₂₄Au(DMBT)₁₈ single negative anion, where DMBT is the 2,4-dimethylbenzenethiolate ligand. The use of efficient simulation algorithms, i.e., the complex polarizability polTDDFT approach and the hybrid-diagonal approximation, allows us to employ a variety of exchange-correlation (xc-) functionals at an affordable computational cost. We are thus able to show, first, how the optical response of this prototypical compound, especially but not exclusively in the absorption threshold (low-energy) region, is sensitive to (1) the choice of the xc-functionals employed in the Kohn-Sham equations and the TDDFT kernel and (2) the choice of the MPC geometry. By comparing simulated spectra with precise experimental photoabsorption data obtained from room temperature down to low temperatures, we then demonstrate how a hybrid xc-functional in both the Kohn-Sham equations and the diagonal TDDFT kernel at the crystallographically determined experimental geometry is able to provide a consistent agreement between simulated and measured spectra across the entire optical region. Single-particle decomposition analysis tools finally allow us to understand the physical reason for the failure of non-hybrid approaches.

Absolute configuration retention of a configurationally labile ligand during dynamic processes of thiolate protected gold clusters

Monolayer protected metal clusters are dynamic nanoscale objects. For example, the chiral Au38(2-PET)24 cluster (2-PET: 2-phenylethylthiolate) racemizes at moderate temperature. In addition, ligands and metal atoms can easily exchange between clusters. Such processes are important for applications of monolayer protected metal clusters; however, the mechanistic study of such processes turns out to be challenging. Here we use a configurationally labile, axially chiral ligand, biphenyl-2,2'-dithiol (R/S-BiDi), as a probe to study dynamic cluster processes. It is shown that the ligand exchange of free R/S-BiDi on a chiral Au38(2-PET)24 cluster is diastereospecific. Using chiral chromatography, isolated single diastereomers of the type anticlockwise/clockwise-Au38(2-PET)22(R/S-BiDi)1 could be isolated. Upon heating, the cluster framework racemizes, while the R/S-BiDi ligand does not. These findings demonstrate that during cluster racemization and/or ligand exchange between clusters, the R/S-BiDi ligand is sufficiently confined, thus preventing its racemization, and exclude the possibility that the ligand desorbs from the cluster surface.

Deposition of Extended Ordered Ultrathin Films of Au38 (SC2 H4 Ph)24 Nanocluster using Langmuir-Blodgett Technique

Langmuir-Blodgett technique is utilized to deposit ultrathin films of Au₃₈ (SC₂ H₄ Ph)₂₄ nanocluster onto solid surfaces such as mica and silicon. The morphologies of the films transferred at various surface pressures within the mono/bi/trilayer regime are studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The time spent on the water surface before the deposition has a decisive effect on the final ordering of nanoclusters within the network and is studied by fast AFM, X-ray reflectivity, and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering.

Combined spectroscopic studies on post-functionalized Au25 cluster as an ATR-FTIR sensor for cations

Recently, significant research activity has been devoted to thiolate-protected gold clusters due to their attractive optical and electronic properties. These properties as well as solubility and stability can be controlled by post-synthetic modification strategies. Herein, the ligand exchange reaction between Au25(2-PET)18 cluster (where 2-PET is 2-phenylethanethiol) and di-thiolated crown ether (t-CE) ligands bearing two chromophores was studied. The post-functionalization aimed to endow the cluster with ion binding properties. The exchange reaction was followed in situ by UV-vis, 1H NMR and HPLC. MALDI mass analysis revealed the incorporation of up to 5 t-CE ligands into the ligand shell. Once functionalized MALDI furthermore showed complexation of sodium ions to the cluster. ATR-FTIR spectroscopic studies using aqueous solutions of K+, Ba2+, Gd3+ and Eu3+ showed noticeable spectral shifts of the C-O stretching band around 1100 cm-1 upon complexation. Further spectral changes point towards a conformational change of the two chromophores that are attached to the crown ether. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the di-thiol ligand bridges two staple units on the cluster. The calculations furthermore reproduce the spectral shift of the C-O stretching vibrations upon complex formation and reveal a conformational change that involves the two chromophores attached to the crown ether. The functionalized clusters have therefore attractive ion sensing properties due to the combination of binding properties, mainly due to the crown ether, and the possibility for signal transduction via an induced conformational change involving chromophore units.

Copper nanoclusters: designed synthesis, structural diversity, and multiplatform applications

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (MNCs) have gained tremendous research interest in recent years due to their extraordinary properties. The molecular-like properties that originate from the quantized electronic states provide novel opportunities for the construction of unique nanomaterials possessing rich molecular-like absorption, luminescence, and magnetic properties. The field of monolayer-protected metal nanoclusters, especially copper, with well-defined molecular structures and compositions, is relatively new, about two to three decades old. Nevertheless, the massive progress in the field illustrates the importance of such nanoobjects as promising materials for various applications. In this respect, nanocluster-based catalysts have become very popular, showing high efficiencies and activities for the catalytic conversion of chemical compounds. Biomedical applications of clusters are an active research field aimed at finding better fluorescent contrast agents, therapeutic pharmaceuticals for the treatment and prevention of diseases, the early diagnosis of cancers and other potent diseases, especially at early stages. A huge library of structures and the compositions of copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) with atomic precisions have already been discovered during last few decades; however, there are many concerns to be addressed and questions to be answered. Hopefully, in future, with the combined efforts of material scientists, inorganic chemists, and computational scientists, a thorough understanding of the unique molecular-like properties of metal nanoclusters will be achieved. This, on the other hand, will allow the interdisciplinary researchers to design novel catalysts, biosensors, or therapeutic agents using highly structured, atomically precise, and stable CuNCs. Thus, we hope this review will guide the reader through the field of CuNCs, while discussing the main achievements and improvements, along with challenges and drawbacks that one needs to face and overcome.

Ligand exchange reactions on thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters

As a versatile post-synthesis modification method, ligand exchange reaction exhibits great potential to extend the space of accessible nanoclusters. In this review, we summarized this process for thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters. In order to better understand this reaction we will first provide the necessary background on the synthesis and structure of various gold clusters, such as Au25(SR)18, Au38(SR)24, and Au102(SR)44. The previous investigations illustrated that ligand exchange is enabled by the chemical properties and flexible gold-sulfur interface of nanoclusters. It is generally believed that ligand exchange follows a SN2-like mechanism, which is supported both by experiments and calculations. More interesting, several studies show that ligand exchange takes place at preferred sites, i.e. thiolate groups -SR, on the ligand shell of nanoclusters. With the help of ligand exchange reactions many functionalities could be imparted to gold nanoclusters including the introduced of chirality to achiral nanoclusters, size transformation and phase transfer of nanoclusters, and the addition of fluorescence or biological labels. Ligand exchange was also used to amplify the enantiomeric excess of an intrinsically chiral cluster. Ligand exchange reaction accelerates the prosperity of the nanocluster field, and also extends the diversity of precise nanoclusters.

Observation of Carbonic Acid Formation from Interaction between Carbon Dioxide and Ice by Using In Situ Modulation Excitation IR Spectroscopy

Carbonic acid, H₂ CO₃ , is of fundamental importance in nature both in living and non-living systems. Providing direct spectroscopic evidence for carbonic acid formation is however a challenge. Here we provide clear evidence by in situ attenuated total reflection IR spectroscopy combined with modulation excitation spectroscopy and phase-sensitive detection that CO₂ adsorption on ice surfaces is accompanied by carbonic acid formation. We demonstrate that carbonic acid can be formed from CO₂ on ice in the absence of high-energy irradiation and without protonation by strong acids. The formation of carbonic acid is favored at low temperature, whereas at high temperature it rapidly dissociates to form bicarbonate (HCO₃ ^- ) and carbonate (CO₃ ^2- ). The direct formation of carbonic acid from adsorption of CO₂ on ice could play a role in the upper troposphere in cirrus clouds, where all the necessary ingredients to form carbonic acid, that is, low temperature, CO₂ gas, and ice, are present.

Palladium(0)-Catalyzed Enantioselective Intramolecular Arylation of Enantiotopic Secondary C-H Bonds

The enantioselective functionalization of nonactivated enantiotopic secondary C-H bonds is one of the greatest challenges in transition-metal-catalyzed C-H activation proceeding by an inner-sphere mechanism. Such reactions have remained elusive within the realm of Pd⁰ catalysis. Reported here is the unique reactivity profile of the IBiox ligand family in the Pd⁰ -catalyzed intramolecular arylation of such nonactivated secondary C-H bonds. Chiral C₂ -symmetric IBiox ligands led to high enantioselectivities for a broad range of valuable indane products containing a tertiary stereocenter, as well as the arylation of secondary C-H bonds adjacent to amides. Depending on the amide substituents and upon control of reaction time, indanes containing labile tertiary stereocenters were also obtained with high enantioselectivities. Analysis of the steric maps of the IBiox ligands indicated that the level of enantioselectivity correlates with the difference between the two most occupied and the two less occupied space quadrants, and provided a blueprint for the design of even more efficient ligands.

Experimental Confirmation of a Topological Isomer of the Ubiquitous Au25(SR)18 Cluster in the Gas Phase

High-resolution electrospray ionization ion mobility mass spectrometry has revealed a gas-phase isomer of the ubiquitous, extremely well-studied Au₂₅(SR)₁₈ cluster both in anionic and cationic form. The relative abundance of the isomeric structures can be controlled by in-source activation. The measured collision cross section of the new isomer agrees extremely well with a recent theoretical prediction (MatusM. F.; et al. Chem. Commun.2020, 56, 8087) corresponding to a Au₂₅(SR)₁₈^– isomer that is energetically close and topologically connected to the known ground-state structure via a simple rotation of the gold core without breaking any Au–S bonds. The results imply that the structural dynamics leading to isomerization of thiolate-protected gold clusters may play an important role in their gas-phase reactions and that isomerization could be controlled by external stimuli.

Ligand exchange reactions on the chiral Au38 cluster: CD modulation caused by the modification of the ligand shell composition

Ligand exchange reactions have become a highly versatile post-synthetic strategy to accurately engineer the ligand shell of atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters. Modifying the chemical structure of the exchanging ligand with chromophore substituents or adding chiral centers allow direct functionalization of the cluster with desired properties. As such, post-functionalized gold nanoclusters with unique physicochemical properties find applications in optoelectronics, catalysis and biomedicine. Herein, we successfully carried out ligand exchange reactions between the chiral Au38(2-PET)24 cluster (both racemic and enantiopure forms) and the helically chiral but configurationally labile 2-thio[4]helicene ligand (TH4). The reaction products with a composition of Au38(2-PET)24-x(TH4)x were analyzed using UV-vis spectroscopy and MALDI mass spectrometry. It was found that up to ten 2-PET ligands can be replaced with the helicene ligand on the cluster surface according to MALDI analysis. Consequently, the UV-vis and CD spectra of the cluster have been strongly affected by the ligand exchange reaction. The intensities of the CD signals of Au38(2-PET)24-x(TH4)x were drastically reduced and red shifted with respect to the reference Au38(2-PET)24 cluster. Moreover, the appearance of the other enantiomer in the HPLC chromatogram revealed the partial racemization of the cluster. DFT calculations were performed and they support the experimental observations and show that the observed chiroptical changes in UV-vis and CD spectra are exchange-site dependent. The calculations also demonstrate that charge transfer (CT) transitions occur between the Au38 cluster and the helicene ligand. Thus the ligand is directly involved in these transitions and contributes to the electronic states comprising those transitions.

Amplification of enantiomeric excess by dynamic inversion of enantiomers in deracemization of Au38 clusters

Symmetry breaking and amplification processes have likely played a fundamental role in the development of homochirality on earth. Such processes have not been much studied for inorganic matter at the nanoscale. Here, we show that the balance between left- and right-handed intrinsically chiral metal clusters can be broken by adsorbing a small amount of a chiral molecule in its ligand shell. We studied the amplification of enantiomeric excess of the Au₃₈(2-PET)₂₄ cluster (2-PET = 2-phenylethylthiolate). By exchanging a small fraction of the achiral 2-PET ligand by chiral R-1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′-dithiol (R-BINAS), a mixture of species is obtained composed of anticlockwise (A) and clockwise (C) versions of Au₃₈(2-PET)₂₄ and Au₃₈(2-PET)₂₂(R-BINAS)₁. At 70 °C, the system evolves towards the anticlockwise clusters at the expense of the clockwise antipode. It is shown that the interplay between the diastereospecific ligand exchange, which introduces selectivity but does not change the A/C ratio, and the fast racemization of the Au₃₈(2-PET)₂₄ is at the origin of this observation.

Symmetry breaking and amplification processes play a fundamental role in nature and technology. Here, the authors show that the interplay between racemization and ligand exchange leads to amplification of enantiomeric excess of intrinsically chiral metal clusters.

Chiral Functionalization of an Atomically Precise Noble Metal Cluster: Insights into the Origin of Chirality and Photoluminescence

We probe the origin of photoluminescence of an atomically precise noble metal cluster, Ag₂₄Au₁(DMBT)₁₈ (DMBT = 2,4-dimethylbenzenethiolate), and the origin of chirality in its chirally functionalized derivatives, Ag₂₄Au₁(R/S-BINAS)_x(DMBT)_18-2x, with x = 1-7 (R/S-BINAS = R/S-1,1'-[binaphthalene]-2,2'-dithiol), using chiroptical spectroscopic measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Combination of chiroptical and luminescence spectroscopies to understand the nature of electronic transitions has not been applied to such molecule-like metal clusters. In order to impart chirality to the achiral Ag₂₄Au₁(DMBT)₁₈ cluster, the chiral ligand, R/S-BINAS, was incorporated into it. A series of clusters, Ag₂₄Au₁(R/S-BINAS)_x(DMBT)_18-2x, with x = 1-7, were synthesized. We demonstrate that the low-energy electronic transitions undergo an unexpected achiral to chiral and back to achiral transition from pure Ag₂₄Au₁(DMBT)₁₈ to Ag₂₄Au₁(R/S-BINAS)_x(DMBT)_18-2x, by increasing the number of BINAS ligands. The UV/vis, luminescence, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopic measurements, in conjunction with DFT calculations, suggest that the photoluminescence in Ag₂₄Au₁(DMBT)₁₈ and its chirally functionalized derivatives originates from the transitions involving the whole Ag₂₄Au₁S₁₈ framework and not merely from the icosahedral Ag₁₂Au₁ core. These results suggest that the chiroptical signatures and photoluminescence in these cluster systems cannot be solely attributed to any one of the structural components, that is, the metal core or the protecting metal-ligand oligomeric units, but rather to their interaction and that the ligand shell plays a crucial role. Our work demonstrates that chiroptical spectroscopic techniques such as circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence represent useful tools to understand the nature of electronic transitions in ligand-protected metal clusters and that this approach can be utilized for gaining deeper insights into the structure-property relationships of the electronic transitions of such molecule-like clusters.

Ligand engineering of immobilized nanoclusters on surfaces: ligand exchange reactions with supported Au11(PPh3)7Br3

The properties of gold nanoclusters, apart from being size-dependent, are strongly related to the nature of the protecting ligand. Ligand exchange on Au nanoclusters has been proven to be a powerful tool for tuning their properties, but has so far been limited to dissolved clusters in solution. By supporting the clusters previously functionalized in solution, it is uncertain that the functionality is still accessible once the cluster is on the surface. This may be overcome by introducing the desired functionality by ligand exchange after the cluster deposition on the support material. We herein report the first successful ligand exchange on supported (immobilized) Au11 nanoclusters. Dropcast films of Au11(PPh3)7Br3 on planar oxide surfaces were shown to react with thiol ligands, resulting in clusters with a mixed ligand shell, with both phosphines and thiolates being present. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the exchange just takes place on the cluster dropcast. Contrary to systems in solution, the size of the clusters did not increase during ligand exchange. Different structures/compounds were formed depending on the nature of the incoming ligand. The feasibility to extend ligand engineering to supported nanoclusters is proven and it may allow controlled nanocluster functionalization.

Antibacterial and ATP Synthesis Modulating Compounds from Salvia tingitana

A surface extract of the aerial parts of Salvia tingitana afforded a nor-sesterterpenoid (1) and eight new sesterterpenoids (2-̵9), along with five known sesterterpenoids, five labdane and one abietane diterpenoid, one sesquiterpenoid, and four flavonoids. The structures of the new compounds were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, HRESIMS, and VCD data and Mosher's esters analysis. The antimicrobial activity of compounds was evaluated against 30 human pathogens including 27 clinical strains and three isolates of marine origin for their possible implications on human health. The methyl ester of salvileucolide (10), salvileucolide-6,23-lactone (11), sclareol (15), and manool (17) were the most active against Gram-positive bacteria. The compounds were also tested for the inhibition of ATP production in purified mammalian rod outer segments. Terpenoids 10, 11, 15, and 17 inhibited ATP production, while only 17 inhibited also ATP hydrolysis. Molecular modeling studies confirmed the capacity of 17 to interact with mammalian ATP synthase. A significant reduction of ATP production in the presence of 17 was observed in Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium isolates.

Amplified vibrational circular dichroism as a manifestation of the interaction between a water soluble gold nanocluster and cobalt salt

Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) is a powerful tool for the structure determination of dissolved molecules. However, the application of VCD to nanostructures is limited up to now due to the weakness of the effect and hence the low signal intensities. Here we show that the addition of a small amount of cobalt(ii) drastically enhances the VCD signals of a thiolate-protected gold cluster Au₂₅(Capt)₁₈ (Capt = captopril) in aqueous solution. An increase of VCD signal intensity of at least one order of magnitude is observed. The enhancement depends on the amount of CoCl₂ added but almost an order of magnitude enhancement is already observed at a cluster : CoCl₂ ratio of 1 : 1. In contrast, circular dichroism (CD) and infrared spectra hardly change. The increase in VCD intensity goes along with a qualitative change of the spectrum and the enhancement increases with time reaching a stable state only after several hours. The enhancement is due to an interaction between the cobalt(ii) and the cluster, which also leads to quenching of its fluorescence. The behaviour is completely different for free captopril, where the addition of cobalt(ii) salt does not affect the VCD spectrum.

Stereochemical significance of O to N atom interchanges within cationic helicenes: experimental and computational evidence of near racemization to remarkable enantiospecificity

Oxygen atoms of cationic dioxa and azaoxa [6]helicenes can be exchanged by amino groups to form azaoxa and diaza [6]helicenes respectively. The mild reaction conditions developed herein allow the construction of libraries of derivatives with sensitive and/or functionalized side chains. Using enantioenriched dioxa or azaoxa helicene precursors, these exchanges lead to either near racemization (es 3%) or to a remarkable enantiospecificity (es up to 97%). This unusual behavior is fully characterized via experimental and computational mechanistic evidence. Based on these investigations, the enantiospecificity of the first transformation can be improved to 57-61%.

The deconvolution analysis of ATR-FTIR spectra of diacetylene during UV exposure

We performed a detailed deconvolution analysis of ATR-FTIR peaks of a common diacetylene, 10,12-tricosadiynoic acid (TRCDA) during the polymerization and the blue-to-red transition. Based on the analysis and the solvent dependence on the IR signals, we found that the triple peak from CC stretching mode that has been previously suspected as a consequence of Fermi resonance is rather associated with the macromolecular assembly of TRCDA. Besides these CC triple peaks, we found that the background in the region increased during the UV exposure due to the CC signals from polymers. In addition, the anisotropic compression during polymerization was also detected, which supports the proposed interpretation of X-ray data reported previously. These results are the benefits from the deconvolution analysis.

High-resolution interference microscopy with spectral resolution for the characterization of individual particles and self-assembled meta-atoms

We apply a high-resolution interference microscope with spectral resolution to investigate the scattering response of isolated meta-atoms in real space. The final meta-atoms consist of core-shell clusters that are fabricated using a bottom-up approach. The meta-atoms are investigated with an increasing complexity. We start by studying silica and gold spheres and conclude with the investigation of the meta-atom, which consists of a silica core sphere onto which gold nanospheres are attached. Numerical simulations entirely verify the measured data. The measuring process involves recording the intensity and phase of the total field emerging from the scattering process of an incident light at the particle in the transmitted half-space with spectral and high spatial resolution. We show that spectrally resolved high-resolution interference microscopy can be used to differentiate between nanoparticles and characterize single meta-atoms, something that is rarely accomplished.

Sesquiterpene Lactones from Artemisia argyi: Absolute Configuration and Immunosuppressant Activity

A library of extracts from plants used in Chinese Traditional Medicine was screened for inhibition of T lymphocyte proliferation. An ethyl acetate extract from aerial parts of Artemisia argyi showed promising activity and was submitted to HPLC-based activity profiling to track the active compounds. From the most active time window, three guaianolides (1, 2, and 5) and two seco-tanapartholides (3 and 4) were identified and, in a less active time window, five new sesquiterpene lactones (8-11, 17), along with six known sesquiterpene lactones and two known flavonoids. The absolute configurations of compounds 1, 2, 5-10, 13-15, 17, and 18 were established by comparison of experimental with calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. For seco-tanapartholides B (3) and A (4), ECD yielded ambiguous results, and their absolute configurations were determined by comparing experimental and calculated vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra. Compounds 1-5 showed significant, noncytotoxic inhibition of T lymphocyte proliferation, with IC₅₀ values between 1.0 and 3.7 μM.

Dynamic Origin of Chirality Transfer between Chiral Surface and Achiral Ligand in Au38 Clusters

The transfer of chirality between nanomolecules is at the core of several applications in chiral technology such as sensing and catalysis. However, the origin of this phenomenon and how exactly nanoscale objects transfer chirality to molecules in their vicinity remain largely obscure. Here, we show that the transfer of chirality for the intrinsically chiral gold cluster Au₃₈(SR)₂₄ is site dependent; that is, it differs depending on the ligand-binding sites. This is closely related to the dynamic nature of the ligands on the cluster surface. Using a combination of NMR techniques and molecular dynamics simulations, we could assign the four symmetry-unique ligands on the cluster. The study reveals largely different conformational dynamics of the bound ligands, explaining the diverse diastereotopicities observed for the CH₂ protons of the ligands. Although chirality is a structural property, our study reveals the importance of dynamics for the transfer of chirality.

Doping of thiolate protected gold clusters through reaction with metal surfaces

A new technique is introduced for doping gold nanoclusters by using a metal surface such as Ag, Cu and Cd as a source of heteroatoms. The importance of the thiol ligand in the doping process is examined by following the reactions with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in the presence and the absence of the thiols on the surface. The doping reactions depend greatly on the type of the cluster and the availability of the ligand which is a crucial element for alloying. The thiol acts as a messenger exchanging the metal atoms between the cluster and the metal surface as revealed by the XPS studies performed on the metal surfaces.

Divergent Enantioselective Synthesis of (Nor)illudalane Sesquiterpenes via Pd0-Catalyzed Asymmetric C(sp3)-H Activation

A divergent enantioselective synthesis of (nor)illudalane sesquiterpenes was designed by using a Pd⁰-catalyzed asymmetric C(sp³)-H arylation as a key step to control the isolated, highly symmetric quaternary stereocenter of the target molecules. A matched combination of chiral substrate and catalyst proved optimal to reach good levels of stereoselectivity. This approach enabled the synthesis of three (nor)illudalanes, including ( S)-deliquinone and ( S)-russujaponol F, which are synthesized for the first time in enantioenriched form.

Transformation from [Au25(SCH2CH2CH2CH3)18]0 to Au28(SCH2CH(CH3)Ph)21 gold nanoclusters: gentle conditions is enough

Herein we report the transformation of [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]⁰ into Au₂₈(SR)₂₁ induced by ligand exchange reaction under mild conditions.

Ligand Migration from Cluster to Support: A Crucial Factor for Catalysis by Thiolate-protected Gold Clusters

Thiolate protected metal clusters are valuable precursors for the design of tailored nanosized catalysts. Their performance can be tuned precisely at atomic level, e. g. by the configuration/type of ligands or by partial/complete removal of the ligand shell through controlled pre-treatment steps. However, the interaction between the ligand shell and the oxide support, as well as ligand removal by oxidative pre-treatment, are still poorly understood. Typically, it was assumed that the thiolate ligands are simply converted into SO2, CO2 and H2O. Herein, we report the first detailed observation of sulfur ligand migration from Au to the oxide support upon deposition and oxidative pre-treatment, employing mainly S K-edge XANES. Consequently, thiolate ligand migration not only produces clean Au cluster surfaces but also the surrounding oxide support is modified by sulfur-containing species, with pronounced effects on catalytic properties.
