No evidence of host-specific egg mimicry in Asian koels

Avian brood parasitism is costly for the host, in many cases leading to the evolution of defenses like discrimination of parasitic eggs. The parasite, in turn, may evolve mimetic eggs as a counter-adaptation to host egg rejection. Some generalist parasites have evolved host-specific races (gentes) that may mimic the eggs of their main hosts, while others have evolved ‘jack-of-all-trades’ egg phenotypes that mimic key features of the eggs of several different host species. The Asian koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus) is a widely distributed generalist brood parasite that exploits a wide range of host species. Based on human vision, previous studies have described Asian koel eggs as resembling those of its main host, the house crow (Corvus splendens). Using measurements of egg length and breadth, digital image analysis, reflectance spectrophotometry and avian visual modelling, we examined Asian koel egg variation and potential mimicry in egg size and shape, and eggshell pattern and color in three sympatrically occurring host species in Bangladesh: the common myna (Acridotheres tristis), house crow, and long-tailed shrike (Lanius schach). We found some differences among Asian koel eggs laid in different host nests: a) Asian koel eggs in long-tailed shrike nests were larger than those laid in common myna and house crow nests, and b) Asian koel eggs in house crow nests were less elongated than those in common myna nests. However, these changes in Asian koel egg volume and shape were in the opposite direction with respect to their corresponding host egg characteristics. Thus, our study found no evidence for Asian koel host-specific egg mimicry in three sympatrically occurring host species.

Incidence and evaluation of an AGUS Papanicolaou smear in primary care

BACKGROUND

The category atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS) occurs in about 0.5% of Papanicolaou smears. Although recent case series report a great many dysplastic, cancerous, and precancerous lesions of the cervix and endometrium associated with AGUS, little attention has been focused on this issue in primary care literature.

METHODS

We report a case series of 52 women with AGUS Papanicolaou smears in a family health center during 2 years (1997 to 1998), along with colposcopy and biopsy results and 18 months of follow-up findings. These results were compared with findings of recent reports.

RESULTS

The incidence of AGUS was 0.5%, 52 of 10,564 Papanicolaou smears. Colposcopy was performed in 45. Biopsy (n = 46) showed 2 adenocarcinomas of the endometrium, and 6 high-grade dysplastic lesions, including 1 squamous cell carcinoma in situ. Nineteen women had cervical intraepithelial neoplasia stage I-changes of human papillomavirus effect, and 4 had endocervical polyps. Three women were lost to follow-up. The frequency of dysplastic and cancerous lesions in our population (17.4%) is consistent with series findings from cytology and obstetrics and gynecology literature, reporting that 19.5% of women with AGUS have either cancer--adenocarcinoma of the endometrium, squamous cell carcinoma, or extrauterine (8%)--or high-grade lesions--cervical intraepithelial neoplasia II-III, carcinoma in situ, or cervical adenocarcinoma in situ, (11.5%).

CONCLUSIONS

A relatively large percentage of women with AGUS on Papanicolaou smears have cancerous and dysplastic squamous and glandular lesions of the exocervix, endocervix, and endometrium. Clinical practice guidelines recommend patients with AGUS should be evaluated with colposcopy and endocervical curettage. Consensus supports endometrial sampling in women 35 years and older and in those with a laboratory report of AGUS, favors neoplasia or suggests an endometrial source.

Staff attitudes towar a family planning service in the mental hospital

Staff attitudes toward an innovative family planning and gynecological service offered to patients in three psychiatric hospitals were assayed. Despite structural differences between hospitals, generally similar and favorable reports were obtained at all sites. However, comparison of verbal responses and actual utilization of the family planning service suggests that a theoretical position held by a minority as well as scattered personal biases militate against fullest cooperation with the program.
