Functional chicken-liver hydrolysates ameliorate insulin resistance and cognitive decline in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice

As part of the slaughtering processing in Taiwan, approximately 10,000 metric tons of broiler livers are produced yearly. However, these livers are regarded as waste. Our team has successfully developed a functional chicken-liver hydrolysate (CLH) with several useful activities. It has been reported that there is a positive relationship between diabetes mellitus (DM) patients and cognitive decline. To maximize broiler-livers' utilization and add value, we investigated the modulative effects of the CLHs on glucose homeostasis and cognitive decline in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic mice. After a 9-wk experiment, CLH supplementation lowered blood glucose by increasing GLUT4 protein expressions in the brains, livers, and muscles of STZ-induced mice (P < 0.05). CLHs also enhanced antioxidant capacities in the livers and brains of STZ-induced mice. Amended memory and alternation behavior were tested by using water and Y-maze assays (P < 0.05). Besides, STZ-induced mice with CLH supplementation had less contracted neuron bodies in the hippocampus and lower (P < 0.05) Aβ depositions in the dentate gyrus area. Less AGE accumulation and apoptosis-related proteins (RAGE, JNK, and activated Caspase 3) in the brains of STZ-induced mice were also detected by supplementing CLHs (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the results from this study offer not only scientific evidence on the amelioration of insulin resistance and cognitive decline in hyperglycemia but also add value to this byproduct.

A national survey of psychosocial job stressors and their implications for health among working people in Taiwan

OBJECTIVES

The prevalence of job stress, distributions of major job stressors, and the associations of job stress with multiple self-reported health complaints were examined in a national survey conducted in 1994 in Taiwan.

METHODS

A total of 9,746 men and 5,599 women who were employed at the time of the survey and aged between 25 and 65-years were studied. Information on employment status, perceived level of job stress, major job stressors, and health complaints were obtained by a self-administered questionnaire.

RESULTS

Overall, 7.6% of men and 6.5% of women reported often or always feeling very stressed at work. Higher levels of perceived job stress were found among subjects who were younger, with higher education level, working in a larger firm, working for longer hours per week, and who were administrators or managers. Problems with individual job content were ranked as the most important job stressor in men across all employment categories and in most women. Other major job stressors included problems with monetary rewards and lack of career prospects. The patterns of major job stressors appear to vary by employment grade and by gender. After adjustment for age and education, employees who perceived higher levels of job stress had significantly increased risks of multiple health problems, including strained eyes, ringing ears, chronic cough with phlegm, chest tightness. stomach problems, headache, and musculoskeletal discomfort.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that psychosocial stress in the workplace has profound impacts on health. This study identified high-risk groups and major types of job stressors for further investigation.

Capture envelopes of rectangular hoods in cross drafts

The suction fields of the rectangular hoods of various aspect ratios varying from 0.1 to 10 that are subject to the influence of cross drafts were experimentally studied in an apparatus consisting of a hood model/wind tunnel assembly. The velocity field on the symmetry plane was measured with a two-component laser Doppler anemometer. Being under the influence of cross draft, the suction field presents a characteristic capture envelope, which is described by a dividing streamline. The characteristics of the capture envelope were found to be determined by the cross-draft to hood-suction velocity ratio R and the hood-opening aspect ratio AR. The flow characteristics of the hoods with aspect ratios less than unity were dramatically different from those with aspect ratios greater than one. If areas of the hood openings had the same values, the hydraulic-diameter normalized characteristic length scales of the capture zone of the square hood were as same as those of the circular hood. When the diameter of a circular hood was equal to the width of a square hood, the physical dimensions of the capture zones created by these two hoods coincided with each other.

The capture envelope of a flanged circular hood in cross drafts

The flow patterns of an exterior circular hood subject to the influence of various uniform cross drafts were experimentally studied in an apparatus consisting of hood-model/wind-tunnel assembly. A two-component laser Doppler anemometer was employed to measure the velocity field on the symmetry plane. The streamline patterns were obtained from the measured velocity data. The cross draft caused a characteristic envelope similar to a half Rankine body-of-revolution to form in the flow field. The boundary of the envelope is described by a dividing streamline. All streamlines within the envelope lead to the opening; those outside the envelope evolve to the downstream area. The normalized geometry of the capture envelope is theoretically justified and correlated by modifying the potential theory of point-sink-plus-rectilinear-flow. The domain and shape of the envelope enclosing the hood opening are determined primarily by the velocity ratio between the cross draft and hood suction. The correlated formula is applicable to design the hood parameters, including the sizes of opening and flange as well as the location of contaminant sources.

Development of respirable aerosol samplers using porous foams

Workplace aerosols must be sampled to assess the degree of health hazard caused by the particulate matter. By adjusting the sampling flow rate, most of the samplers can match the 50% cutoff size, but not the slope of the respirable convention defined by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, the International Organization for Standardization, and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Combinations of foams (or other porous material) of different nominal sizes (10-100 ppi) and thicknesses (5-35 mm) were employed to overcome this bias. A foam disk 25 mm in diameter was placed in an asbestos sampling cowl. Dioctylphthalate was the liquid test agent. An aerodynamic particle sizer and an Aerosizer were calibrated against a settling chamber and were employed to measure the aerosol number concentrations and size distributions upstream and downstream of the foams. The sampling efficiency data showed that the 50% cutoff size could be met for foams in series, but that the slope remained sharper than the new definition. Foams in parallel showed great flexibility and many of the parallel combinations flattened the slope, closer to that of the new international respirable convention. For instance, when the total flow rate is set at 10.1 L/min the aerosol penetration through foams in parallel (100 ppi, 20 mm thick, diameter 25 mm + 10 ppi, 20 mm thick, diameter 13 mm) nearly matched the new international standard for respirable fraction. This sampler can be further miniaturized for smaller sampling flow rates to fit the capacity of personal sampling pumps.

The relationship between low back discomfort ratings and the NIOSH lifting index

An epidemiological study was performed to evaluate the relation between low-back discomfort ratings and use of the revised NIOSH lifting guide to assess the risk of manual material handling (MMH) tasks. We surveyed 97 MMH workers on site in 15 factories and designed a questionnaire to systematically collect job-related information. Approximately 90% of the workers had suffered various degrees of lower back discomfort, and 80% had sought medical treatment. The survey showed that 42 of the 97 jobs analyzed had a recommended weight limit of 0, which was attributed to either a horizontal distance or a lifting frequency that exceeded the bounds of the NIOSH lifting index. Apparently, the limits for horizontal distance and maximum allowable frequency are too stringent to accommodate many existing MMH jobs. For the remaining 55 jobs, the significant positive correlation obtained between the lifting index and the severity of low-back discomfort suggests that the lifting index is reliable in assessing the potential risk of low-back injury in MMH. These findings provide useful information on the application of the NIOSH lifting guide to the assessment of low-back pain.

Epidemiologic study of occupational injuries among foreign and native workers in Taiwan

This study was designed to compare the risk of occupational injuries in foreign workers compared to native workers in Taiwan. The cohort of foreign workers under study was constructed by records of legally registered workers migrated from foreign countries to Taiwan from July 1, 1991 to December 31, 1993. The native Taiwanese workers for comparison were labor-insured workers working in the same industries as foreign workers in 1992. The number of occupational injuries in the first year of employment were obtained by matching the cohort of foreign workers with the labor insurance payment records by name, birth date and passport number. The 1-year incidence rate of occupational injuries in the first year of employment was calculated and a standardized morbidity ratio (SMR) was used for comparison with adjustment for age distribution and to accommodate the small sample size of foreign workers. The risk to occupational injuries among total (SMR = 0.86) and male (SMR = 0.58) foreign workers was not higher; indeed, it was even lower, than that among native workers in Taiwan. However, the risk to female migrant workers, especially in the construction industry, was significantly higher than that of female Taiwanese workers (SMR = 1.60). Stratified by industry, the incidence was high in the fabricated metal products manufacturing industry and in machinery and equipment manufacturing industry for male foreign workers, while a high incidence for the female foreign workers occurred in construction industry and rubber products manufacturing industry. The risk of occupational injuries was greater for foreign workers who had been in Taiwan for only a short time. Most of the injuries occurred within the first 6 months of employment. Eighty-four out of the 394 occupational injuries among foreign workers resulted in disabilities. None of the accidents was fatal, but most of the disabilities were severe. The most common disabling injuries were cut or crushed fingers. The finding of a similar distribution of occupational injuries among foreign and native workers indicates that control measures are needed to reduce occupational injuries for all foreign and native workers in Taiwan.

An outbreak of N-hexane induced polyneuropathy among press proofing workers in Taipei

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and the etiology of polyneuropathy observed among press proofing workers in Taipei. Neurological examinations of 59 workers, from 16 press proofing factories, were conducted. Fifty-four of those workers subsequently underwent studies of nerve conduction velocities. Samples of bulk solvent from the involved factories were analyzed for their contents using gas chromatography. Fifteen (25%) of the study group were found to have polyneuropathy. All 15 patients with polyneuropathy were from factories in which solvents containing n-hexane were regularly used, and there was a significant association between n-hexane concentration in the bulk samples and prevalence of polyneuropathy. The air concentration of n-hexane in one factory in which all six employees developed polyneuropathy was 190 ppm. Workers who were exposed to n-hexane at air levels of less than 100 ppm but who frequently worked overtime showed a significant slowing of motor nerve conduction velocities on median, ulnar, and peroneal nerves. Of 13 workers who regularly slept in the factory, 12 (92%) had polyneuropathy compared to three (7%) of 46 workers who did not sleep in the factory. The outbreak of polyneuropathy was attributed to a combination of the use of solvents with high contents of n-hexane, poor ventilation, and the practice of sleeping in the factories between shifts.
