Changes in the nutrient ratios and phytoplankton community after declines in nutrient concentrations in a semi-enclosed bay in Hong Kong

Tolo Harbour is a landlocked bay with poor tidal flushings in the northeastern part of Hong Kong. During the 1980s, excessive nutrient loading led to dramatic increase in nutrient concentrations, accompanied by lower N:P ratios, higher algal biomass and shifts in the phytoplankton community. We studied the effects of nutrient loading reduction measures on nutrient concentrations, nutrient ratios and phytoplankton dynamics in Tolo Harbour by comparing data collected before the full implementation of nutrient loading reduction measures (1986-1997) to those after the implementation (1998-2008). Such measures led to declines in nutrient concentrations, changes in N:P and N:Si ratios, lower chlorophyll-a concentrations and fewer algal blooms. Diatoms were the most abundant phytoplankton group in Tolo Harbour both before and after declines in nutrient concentrations. The density of dinoflagellates did not change, but substantial increase in other algal group abundance was recorded.

Toxicity assessment of sediments containing tributyltin around Hong Kong harbour

Rather high levels of tributyltin (TBT) in sediments were found in certain areas around the Hong Kong coastline. Sediments from two contaminated sites (Tsing Yi and Yam O) and two clean sites were used to study the release of TBT contaminants from resuspended sediment to the water column by elutriate tests. The chemical analysis data of elutriates were compared with the effective or lethal concentrations from the toxicity tests of spiked solution using marine microalga (Dunaliella tertiolecta) and benthic invertebrate (Melita koreana) to assess the potential ecotoxicological impacts arising from the dredging work. Concentrations of TBT in filtered sediment elutriates were mostly below 0.002 microg/l which suggested that very little of TBT was released in soluble form. The lethal toxicity of TBT for the invertebrate expressing as 10 day-LC(50) was 2.31 microg/l for TBT and the alga expressing as 48 h-EC(50) was 0.46 microg/l. The results of this evaluation demonstrated that the release of TBT from two contaminated sites during dredging was unlikely to attain the effective or lethal concentrations on the two test species.

Long-term changes in water quality and phytoplankton characteristics in port shelter, Hong Kong, from 1988-1998

This study analysed monthly physico-chemical and phytoplankton data collected from 10 marine monitoring stations in Port Shelter Hong Kong, from 1988 to 1998. Cluster analysis based on all water quality parameters measured shows that the 10 monitoring stations can be grouped into three clusters: Cluster I consists of stations located in Outer Port Shelter; Cluster II consists of stations located in Inner Port Shelter and Cluster III consists of a single station in Hebe Heaven, a well-sheltered Bay in Inner Port Shelter. Factor analysis shows high positive loadings for nutrients and nutrient ratios in the first two factors of the three clusters, which indicates that the stations of the three clusters were primarily grouped according to their respective nutrient conditions. In Inner Port Shelter, and particularly Station PM5 in the sheltered Hebe Haven, the influence of surface runoff and pollution loading from the surrounding catchment area was apparent. Five stations located along a transect from Inner to Outer Port Shelter were selected for trend analysis. An increasing trend for temperature and a decreasing trend for pH are observed in all Stations except PM10 which is at the mouth of Port Shelter. The results of canonical analysis revealed that temperature and pH could also play an important role in determining the density and biovolume of the minor algal groups in Port Shelter.
