Abstract
Over the past decade, the therapeutic potential of nanomaterials as novel drug delivery systems complementing conventional pharmacology has been widely acknowledged. Among these nanomaterials, lipid-based nanoparticles (LNPs) have shown remarkable pharmacological performance and promising therapeutic outcomes, thus gaining substantial interest in preclinical and clinical research. In this review, we introduce the main types of LNPs used in drug formulations such as liposomes, nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, and lipid polymer hybrid nanoparticles, focusing on their main physicochemical properties and therapeutic potential. We discuss computational studies and modeling techniques to enhance the understanding of how LNPs interact with therapeutic cargo and to predict the potential effectiveness of such interactions in therapeutic applications. We also analyze the benefits and drawbacks of various LNP production techniques such as nanoprecipitation, emulsification, evaporation, thin film hydration, microfluidic-based methods, and an impingement jet mixer. Additionally, we discuss the major challenges associated with industrial development, including stability and sterilization, storage, regulatory compliance, reproducibility, and quality control. Overcoming these challenges and facilitating regulatory compliance represent the key steps toward LNP's successful commercialization and translation into clinical settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we aimed to describe the timing of contralateral testicular fixation with our ten year results in postpubertal patients with testicular torsion with a patient-based approach. METHODS Postpubertal patients diagnosed with testicular torsion in a tertiary hospital between January-2012 and September-2022 were divided into 2 groups according to the "patient-based approach" criteria we adopted in our clinic. Group 1 in whom the contralateral teste was fixed in the same surgical act and group 2 in whom the fixation was deferred. Both groups, were retrospectively examined, statistically analyzed and compared. RESULTS A total of 41 patients were included in the study. Among those, 19 (46.3%) were fixed in the same act, and 22 (53.7%) underwent postponed elective contralateral testicular fixation. Early term wound dehiscence was observed in one patient in each group (4.5% Group 1 vs. 5.3% Group 2). In the postoperative period, no contralateral testicular atrophy or torsion was detected in the study groups during 1-year follow-up. CONCLUSION There is no algorithm for when contralateral testicular fixation should be performed in postpubertal patients with testicular torsion. Patient-based approaches, in which the clinical characteristics of the patient are prioritized in determining the timing of contralateral testicular fixation, can produce more effective and safe results.

Abstract
Recent advances in the management of diffuse pleural mesothelioma (DPM) have increased interest in prognostication and risk stratification on the basis that maximum benefit of combination immunotherapy appears to be seen in patients who otherwise would have the worst prognosis. Various grading schemes have been proposed, including the recently published Mesothelioma Weighted Grading Scheme (MWGS). However, predictive modelling using deep learning algorithms is increasingly regarded as the gold standard in prognostication. We therefore sought to develop and validate a prognostic nomogram for DPM. Data from 369 consecutive patients with DPM were used as independent training and validation cohorts to develop a prognostic tool that included the following variables: age, sex, histological type, nuclear atypia, mitotic count, necrosis, and BAP1 immunohistochemistry. Patients were stratified into four risk groups to assess model discrimination and calibration. To assess discrimination, the area-under-the-curve (AUC) of a receiver-operator-curve (ROC), concordance-index (C-index), and dissimilarity index (D-index) were calculated. Based on the 5-year ROC analysis, the AUC for our model was 0.75. Our model had a C-index of 0.67 (95% CI 0.53-0.79) and a D-index of 2.40 (95% CI 1.69-3.43). Our prognostic nomogram for DPM is the first of its kind, incorporates well established prognostic markers, and demonstrates excellent predictive capability. As these factors are routinely assessed in most pathology laboratories, it is hoped that this model will help inform prognostication and difficult management decisions, such as patient selection for novel therapies. Abstract
This study aimed to determine the direct and indirect effects of the independent variables presented by the lactation lenght (LL), age of calving (CAGE), and daily milk yield (DMY) on the dependent variable of lactation milk yield (LMY) in Anatolian buffaloes. In this study, a total of 3761 LMY records of the 834 Anatolian buffaloes calving between 2012 and 2017 in Tokat province and around were used as the research material. In the study, the simple correlation coefficients between the dependent variable of LMY and independent variables were determined positive and significant (P<0.001). The research specified the direct determination coefficients of the independent variables of the LL, CAGE, and DMY on the dependent variable of LMY as 0.378, 0.004, and 0.350, respectively. The path coefficients related to LL, CAGE, and DMY were determined as 0.615, 0.021, and 0.592, respectively. Since the DMY and LL examined in the study had a high direct impact on the lactation milk yield, therefore it could be suggested that using these data as criteria in breeding programs conducted in the herds evaluated in the study will increase the success in the selections applied.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the fatty acid and chemical composition of the Longissimus dorsi (LD) from male Tuj and Hemşin lambs reared in extensive, semi-intensive and intensive feeding systems. At the end of 90 days eight lambs from each breed and feeding system were slaughtered to determine chemical composition, and six lambs in each group were selected at random to assess fatty acid composition. Breed and feeding system interaction affected the quantities of saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and the atherogenic (AI), thrombogenic (TI), and nutritive value (NVI) indices. In Hemşin the ratio of PUFA to SFA was higher in lambs fed in the extensive system than those produced in the semi-intensive and intensive systems, which were similar, whereas in Tuj this ratio decreased from the extensive to semi-intensive to intensive feeding systems. The ratio of omega n-6 to omega n-3 fatty acids was lower in the extensive and semi-intensive systems than it was in intensively fed Hemşin lambs, but increased with the intensity of feeding in Tuj lambs. Intramuscular fat content was higher in Hemşin lambs than in Tuj lambs and increased with the intensity of the feeding system. Conjugated linoleic acid content (CLA) was affected by feeding system in Hemşin lambs, but not in Tuj lambs. Because of their high PUFA/SFA ratio and low TI value, Tuj lambs reared in extensive feeding system were deemed to have the best performance.

Abstract
Maternal nutrient intake during early- and mid-gestation can alter fetal growth and development with long-term consequences on the postnatal productivity and health of offspring. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal nutrition level during mid-gestation on postnatal growth rate, carcass composition, muscle fibre characteristics and meat quality in lambs. Ewes were fed from Days 30 to 80 of gestation as follows: 100% (control group, C), 50% (undernutrition, UN) or 175% (overnutrition, ON) of their daily requirement. During the rest of the gestation, the ewes in all groups were fed 100% of their daily requirements. Birth and weaning (at Day 90) weights of lambs born to ewes in nutritional groups were similar, but slaughter weights (at Day 150) and daily weight gain during finishing period of lambs born to the UN group were lower (P < 0.05). Similarly, a decrease in weights of semitendinosus (ST), semimembranosus and gastrocnemius muscles was observed in the lambs born to the UN group (P < 0.05). Lambs born to the ON group had a higher (P < 0.05) concentration of DNA in longissimus dorsi (LD) and ST muscles than UN groups, but they had a lower (P < 0.05) total protein and other proteins concentrations in LD and ST muscles than those to C and UN groups. Protein to DNA ratio in LD and ST muscles of lambs born to ON group were lower than those to C and UN groups (P < 0.05). However, lambs born to the ON group had a higher number of Type IIA and IIB muscle fibres in ST muscles but not in LD muscles than those in the C and UN groups (P < 0.05). Additionally an increase in the number of fibres/mm2 muscle area in lambs born to the ON group was observed in LD and ST muscles (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between treatment groups in terms of meat quality parameters studied. This study confirms that maternal nutrition level during mid-gestation alters the postnatal growth and muscle fibre development of lambs.

Abstract
We evaluated the impact of transrectal prostate needle biopsy (TPNB) on erectile function and on the prostate and bilateral neurovascular bundles using power Doppler ultrasonography imaging of the prostate. The study consisted of 42 patients who had undergone TPNB. Erectile function was evaluated prior to the biopsy, and in the 3rd month after the biopsy using the first five-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). Prior to and 3 months after the biopsy, the resistivity index of the prostate parenchyma and both neurovascular bundles was measured. The mean age of the men was 64.2 (47-78) years. Prior to TPNB, 10 (23.8%) patients did not have erectile dysfunction (ED) and 32 (76.2%) patients had ED. The mean IIEF-5 score was 20.8 (range: 2-25) prior to the biopsies, and the mean IIEF-5 score was 17.4 (range: 5-25; p < 0.001) after 3 months. For patients who were previously potent in the pre-biopsy period, the ED rate was 40% (n = 4/10) at the 3rd month evaluation. In these patients, all the resistivity index values were significantly decreased. Our results showed that TPNB may lead to an increased risk of ED. The presence of ED in men after TPNB might have an organic basis.

Abstract
The Lake Eacham rainbowfish (Melanotaenia eachamensis) was once thought to be confined to its type locality within the Lake Eacham World Heritage National Park. M. eachamensis disappeared from the lake following the translocation of several species into the lake and the species was pronounced extinct in the wild in 1987. In a 2007 survey we noticed that rainbowfish were present in the lake once again. We used a molecular marker to identify these fish and the likely source population. Analysis of the D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA revealed that the species now present in the lake is Melanotaenia splendida, and is most closely related to several M. splendida populations in the immediate vicinity. Here we explore a range of scenarios that may have led to this colonisation event and highlight the dangers associated with translocation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although various local anesthesia techniques have been suggested to decrease pain and discomfort during a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy, the best method has not yet been defined. The present prospective, double-blind, randomized study aims to investigate the clinical efficacy of 'walking' caudal block compared with an intrarectal lidocaine gel for this procedure. METHODS One hundred patients were randomly assigned to two groups. In the lidocaine gel group, 10 ml of gel containing 2% lidocaine was given intrarectally. In the caudal group, 20 ml 0.1% bupivacaine with 75 microg fentanyl was injected. Pain scores, anal sphincter tone and patient satisfaction were evaluated. RESULTS The pain scores were significantly lower in the caudal group at all stages. Verbal rating scores (scale 1-4) during probe insertion, probe maneuver and biopsies were 1 (0-2), 1 (0-2) and 1 (0-2) vs. 3 (0-5), 2 (1-3) and 4 (2-6), respectively (P value <0.0001 at all stages). The anal sphincter was more relaxed in the caudal group than in the gel group (P value <0.0001 in all categories). Highly satisfied patients were more frequently encountered in the caudal group, 34 (68%) vs. 8 (16%), P<0.0001, and unsatisfied patients were more frequently found in the gel group 1 (2%) vs. 12 (24%); P<0.001. All patients were able to walk without any assistance immediately after the procedures. CONCLUSION 'Walking' caudal analgesia is an efficacious method for relieving the pain during TRUS-guided prostate biopsies in ambulatory practice.

Abstract
In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) on apoptosis of testicular germ cells after repair of testicular torsion in rats. Twenty-four adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups, with six rats in each group: sham operation, torsion/detorsion (T/D), T/D + vehicle, and T/D + DHEA. Three hours before detorsion, 50 mg kg(-1) DHEA was given intraperitoneally to T/D + DHEA group. In all groups, bilateral orchiectomies were performed and both testicles were histologically examined, with apoptosis detected using the in situ DNA fragmentation [terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling (TUNEL)] system, with morphological damage detected using a four-level grading scale in each specimen. The testes of the sham group showed a normal histology. In T/D and T/D + vehicle groups, apoptotic spermatogonia and spermatocyte number were significantly higher than in the sham group (P < 0.01 for all). The T/D + DHEA group showed a reduction in apoptotic spermatocyte and spermatogonia number in seminiferous epithelia compared with T/D group (P < 0.01 for both). Apoptotic cell number of contralateral testes did not reveal any significant differences among these groups (P > 0.05). Specimens from T/D and T/D + vehicle had a significantly greater histological injury than sham and T/D + DHEA groups in the ipsilateral testes (P < 0.01 for both). Therefore, the results suggest that DHEA may be a protective agent for preventing apoptosis caused by testicular torsion.

Abstract
Male rats were equally divided into trained rest (TR), trained exhaustive exercise (TE), untrained rest (UR), and untrained exhaustive exercise (UE). Endurance training consisted of treadmill running for 1.5 h/d, 5 days a week for 8 weeks reaching the speed of 2.1 km/h at the fortieth week. For acute exhaustive exercise, graded treadmill running was conducted reaching the speed of 2.1 km/h at 95th min, 10% uphill, continued until exhaustion. Testicular tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant potential (AOP) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT) activities were determined. There was a slight decrease, but not significant, in the SOD activity in UE group compared to TE and TR groups. Activity of GSH-Px decreased in the UE group compared to UR, TR and TE groups. Acute exhaustive exercise did not affect testicular tissue GSH-Px activity in trained rats. Testicular tissue GST activity of the UE group was similar to TE group, but lower than UR and TR groups. In UE group, testicular tissue AOP values were lower than UR, TR and TE groups. The oxidative effects of acute exhaustive exercise on the rat testis decreased with endurance training. Endurance training prevents oxidative injuries by eliminating oxygen radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation via preventing decreases in antioxidant enzyme activities.

Abstract
Previous studies showed that subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) was associated with cardiovascular disorders, such as endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and myocardial dysfunction. Only one study investigated left ventricular (LV) function using pulsed tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) in patients with SH. However, no study has used this technique in the identification of right ventricular (RV) function in these patients. We aimed to investigate the effect of SH on RV and LV function using TDE technique. The present study included 36 newly diagnosed SH patients and 28 healthy controls. For each subjects, serum free T3 (FT3), free T4 (FT4), total T3 (TT3), total T4 (TT4), TSH, peroxidase antibody (TPOab) and thyroglobulin antibody (TGab) levels were measured, and standard echocardiography and TDE were performed. In patients with SH, TSH levels were significantly higher, and TPOab and TGab levels were significantly higher when compared to healthy controls. TDE showed that the patients had significantly lower early diastolic mitral and tricuspid annular velocity (Ea) and early/late (Ea/Aa) diastolic mitral and tricuspid annular velocity ratio (p<0.05, p<0.05 and p<0.001, p<0.001, respectively), and significantly longer isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT) of left and right ventricles (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). However, Aa, Sa, and isovolumetric contraction time (ICT) and ET (ejection time) of left and right ventricle did not significantly differ (p=ns for all). In addition, a negative correlation between TSH and TD-derived tricuspid Ea velocity and Ea/Aa ratio, and a positive correlation between TSH and IRT of right ventricle were observed. Our findings demonstrated that SH is associated with impaired RV diastolic function in addition to impaired LV diastolic function.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to review 9 cases with urinary tract hydatid disease in terms of symptoms, findings, laboratory tests, radiological findings and treatment modalities. There were 7 males and 2 females with a mean age of 33.6 years (range from 7 to 67 years). In 6 patients hydatid cyst was located in the kidney (1 involved the liver), in 2 the cysts were in the paravesical and retrovesical region (1 coexisted bladder tumor) and 1 the cyst was located adrenal gland. The investigations included urinalysis, eosinophil count, Casoni skin test, indirect haemagglutination test (IHA), transabdominal ultrasonography (TAUS), intravenous urography (IVU) and computed tomography (CT). All patients underwent various surgical procedures and were followed-up for an average of 3 years (range: 1 month to 5 years) period in terms of complications and recurrence rates. The most common symptom was lumbar or abdominal pain. Eosinophilia was seen in 4 patients (44.4%), IHA positivity in 3 patients (33.3%) and Casoni skin test were positive in 3 patients (33.3%). The most diagnostic method of radiological investigations was abdominal pelvic CT (100%). After surgical treatment, in mean a 3 year (range: 1 month to 5 years) follow-up period, no complication and recurrence were seen. Hydatid disease of the urinary tract is relatively uncommon and is likely to cause considerable diagnostic difficulties for clinicians and radiologists: therefore, it should be born in mind in the differential diagnosis of space-occupying lesions of the urinary tract.

Abstract
There is an inverse correlation between seminal plasma nitric oxide (NO) concentration and sperm parameters (motility and concentration) in patients with varicocele. This study investigated whether this occurs in patients with oligo- and/or asthenozoospermia due to causes other than varicocele. A total of 69 (19 with varicocele and oligo- and/or asthenozoospermia [group 1], 30 from oligo- and/or asthenozoospermic ones without varicocele [group 2], and 20 from healthy subjects [control group]) semen samples were analyzed. While group 1 had a significantly higher NO concentration in the seminal plasma compared to both the control group and group 2, there was no significant difference between group 2 and the control group (p >.05). In group 1, but not in the other groups, there was an inverse correlation between the seminal plasma NO concentration and sperm motility and concentration. NO production could be specifically related to the varicocele, since NO production in oligo- and/or asthenozoospermia cases without varicocele is not increased.

Abstract
This study reviews urinary hydatid disease in seven males and three females (mean age, 32.1 +/- 17.7 years; range, 7-67 years). Cysts were located in the kidney in six cases (one also involved the liver), the paravesical and retrovesical region in two cases (one coexisted with a bladder tumour), the adrenal gland (one case) and in the right parapelvic region (one case). Investigations included urinalysis, eosinophil count, Casoni skin test, indirect haemagglutination test (IHA), abdominal ultrasonography, intravenous urography and computed tomography (CT). All patients underwent surgery and were followed for an average of 5.6 years. Lumbar or abdominal pain was the most common symptom. Eosinophilia was seen in five patients (50%), IHA positivity occurred in four patients (40%) and the Casoni skin test was positive in four patients (40%). Abdominal CT was the most useful diagnostic method of radiological investigation (100%). No complications or recurrences were seen on follow-up. Urinary hydatid disease is uncommon and is likely to cause considerable diagnostic difficulties, and should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis of space-occupying lesions of the urinary tract.

Abstract
We measured the circulatory levels of nitric oxide and estradiol in men over 50 years with estrogenisation findings. We investigated relation between nitric oxide, which is the principal signal for relaxation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and estradiol levels in serum in men over 50 years with estrogenisation. This study included 14 men with (group 1) and 20 without estrogenisation findings (group 2). Mean nitric oxide and estradiol levels were found to be significantly lower in group 2 than group 1. Group 2 had lower levels sex-hormone binding globin and higher both systolic and diastolic blood pressure values than group 1. There was a significant correlation between nitric oxide and estradiol in esrogenisation group.

Abstract
The kinetic properties of placental glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were studied, since this enzyme is expected to be an important component of the placental protection system. In this capacity it is also very important for the health of the fetus. The placental enzyme obeyed "Rapid Equilibrium Ordered Bi Bi" sequential kinetics with K(m) values of 40+/-8 microM for glucose-6-phosphate and 20+/-10 microM for NADP. Glucose-6-phosphate, 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate and galactose-6-phosphate were used with catalytic efficiencies (k(cat)/K(m)) of 7.4 x 10(6), 4.89 x 10(4) and 1.57 x 10(4) M(-1).s(-1), respectively. The K(m)app values for galactose-6-phosphate and for 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate were 10+/-2 and 0.87+/-0.06 mM. With galactose-6-phosphate as substrate, the same K(m) value for NADP as glucose-6-phosphate was obtained and it was independent of galactose-6-phosphate concentration. On the other hand, when 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate used as substrate, the K(m) for NADP decreased from 30+/-6 to 10+/-2 microM as the substrate concentration was increased from 0.3 to 1.5 mM. Deamino-NADP, but not NAD, was a coenzyme for placental glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. The catalytic efficiencies of NADP and deamino-NADP (glucose-6-phosphate as substrate) were 1.48 x 10(7) and 4.80 x 10(6) M(-1)s(-1), respectively. With both coenzymes, a hyperbolic saturation and an inhibition above 300 microM coenzyme concentration, was observed. Human placental glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was inhibited competitively by 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (K(i)=15+/-3 mM) and NADPH (K(i)=17.1+/-3.2 microM). The small dissociation constant for the G6PD:NADPH complex pointed to tight enzyme:NADPH binding and the important role of NADPH in the regulation of the pentose phosphate pathway.

Abstract
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was purified from human placenta using DEAE-Sepharose fast flow, 2',5'-ADP Sepharose 4B column chromatography, and chromatofocusing on PBE 94 with PB 74. The enzyme was purified with 62% yield and had a specific activity of 87 units per milligram protein. The pH optimum was determined to be 7.8, using zero buffer extrapolation method. The purified placental glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase gave two activity bands on native PAGE: one band, constituting about 3--5% of total activity, moved slower than the remaining 95%. Among the activity bands only the faster moving band gave a band on protein staining. The slower moving band, which probably corresponded to the higher polymeric form of the G6PD with high specific activity, was not seen on native PAGE due to insufficient protein for Coomassie brilliant blue staining. The observation of one band on SDS--PAGE with an M(r) of 54 kDa and a specific activity lower than expected, suggests the presence of both forms of the G6PD, the high polymeric form at low concentration and the inactive form at high concentration, in our preparation. Measuring the activities of placental glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase between 20 and 50 degrees C, the activation energy, activation enthalpy, and Q(10) were calculated to be 8.16 kcal/mol, 7.55 kcal/mol, and 1.57, respectively. It was found that human placental G6PD obeys Michaelis-Menten kinetics. K(m) values were determined using the concentration ranges of 20--300 microM for G6P and 10--200 microM for NADP(+). The K(m) value for G6P was 40 microM; the K(m) value NADP(+) was found to be 20 microM. Double-reciprocal plots of 1/Vm vs 1/G6P (at constant [NADP(+)]) and of 1/Vm vs 1/NADP(+) (at constant [G6P]) intersected at the same point on the 1/V(m) axis to give V(m) = 87 U/mg protein.

Abstract
A review of our records between 1993 and 1998 identified 25 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder who were less than 40 years old, 22 males and 3 females. The youngest patient was 19 years old. At the time of diagnosis 16 patients had superficial (Ta/T1) and 9 had invasive disease. Twenty-four patients were followed up for a period of 3-71 months (mean: 19.2 months). The recurrence rate for patients with superficial disease was 12.5%, and the progression rate for patients with invasive disease was 77.7%. We concluded that the patients under 30 years of age presented with lower grade and lower stage disease than those over 30. Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder in young adults has a natural history similar to that seen in older patients. Accordingly, all patients, regardless of age, should be treated as aggressively as necessary on the basis of the stage and the grade of the tumour.

Abstract
We investigated the relationship between seminal plasma nitric oxide (NO) concentrations and conventional semen parameters in patients with varicocele. Semen samples were obtained from infertile patients with varicocele (n = 55) and from normal controls (n = 48). The mean NO concentration in the seminal plasma of patients with varicocele was significantly higher than that of the controls (P < 0.01). A significant negative correlation was noted between NO and sperm motility (r = -0.29, P = 0.003), NO and sperm concentration (r = -0.26, P = 0.008) and NO and normal morphology (normal %) (r = -0.25, P = 0.01). It was concluded that increased NO production may influence sperm production, motility and morphology in patients with varicocele.

Abstract
The first step in the separation of adenine nucleotides from different types of tissues or cells is deproteinization. Several sample preparation methods successfully used for a number of tissues or cells failed to work with erythrocytes. Use of strong acids or bases for deproteinization resulted in a low yield due to the hydrolysis of adenine nucleotides. Moreover, the neutralization of these acids or bases increased the ionic strength, resulting in broad and overlapping peaks. In neutral salt precipitation methods, saturated salts caused clogging of the capillaries. A new deproteinization procedure method was developed. The samples were deproteinized by heating of erythrocytes in boiling distilled water at 95 degrees C for 5 min. The denatured proteins were removed by centrifugation and membrane filtration. The adenine nucleotides were then separated using a polyacrylamide coated capillary. Depending on the type, diameter, length of the capillary and the voltage applied, an average of 16.50 min was sufficient for the separation of adenine nucleotides. All adenine nucleotides were clearly resolved and gave very sharp peaks. The amount of each adenine nucleotide was calculated from the areas under the peaks and AEC values were calculated using the integrator software. The AEC value of 0.91+/-0.04 (n=10) obtained for healthy persons was in good agreement with the literature value of 0.85-0.95. These reported method for sample preparation and capillary electrophoresis is simple, fast and inexpensive compared to the previously reported sample preparation, HPLC and enzymatic methods for the determination of AEC.

Abstract
We have documented the data of squamous metaplasia of the bladder in 14 patients who had undergone cystoscopies for different reasons. In two biopsies, there were marked keratinization and cellular atypia. One of these two subjects was diagnosed as squamous carcinoma of the prostate and transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. The lesions of 8 female patients were on the trigone and evaluated as normal anatomical variants due to hormonal changes. Three of them were remarkable because of recurrent urinary infections. Apart from the two male patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate the two male patients with current squamous metaplasia have been following up. In this study, we have also reviewed the relationship between squamous metaplasia, infection and malignancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, a randomized and placebo controlled trial, we aimed to study the effectiveness and safety of doxazosin based upon urodynamic parameters, especially pressure/flow studies, in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 57 men (29 doxazosin, 28 placebo) 48-82 years of age with BPH were enrolled. Yet, 8 of 29 in the doxazosin group and 10 of 28 in the placebo group were excluded due to side effects of doxazosin and intolerability of urodynamic assessment of free uroflow, postvoiding residual urine volume (PVR) and pressure/flow studies. RESULTS There were improvements in all urodynamic parameters (Free Qmax: 30.4% and 28%, PVR: 14 ml and 12 ml, invasive Qmax: 29.3% and 26.2%, Pdet at Qmax: -32.7% and -30%, Pdet-max: -29% and -27.7% at end of the 1st and 6th months whereas placebo effects were worsening in all urodynamic parameters. CONCLUSIONS We suggest that doxazosin is an important treatment option for patients with BPH, and efficacy of doxazosin should be evaluated with objective, quantitative urodynamic studies not with subjective symptom scores. But additional costs and invasiveness of urodynamic studies restrict their common usefulness.

Abstract
Abdominal and pelvic operations at Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and General Surgery play an important role in ureteral, bladder and rarely urethral injuries. Fifty-nine patients with iatrogenic ureteral, bladder and urethral injuries were treated at the Department of Urology, Atatürk University Research Hospital, between 1985 and 1995. These injuries were urinary vaginal fistulas in 43 patients (vesicovaginal 33, ureterovaginal 7, urethrovaginal 2 and vesicovaginal plus urethrovaginal 1), ureteric ligation in 9, bladder laceration in 7. These injuries were treated by different methods. All patients were followed up by intravenous urography (IVU) and urine culture three months later. It must be borne in mind that iatrogenic urinary tract injuries are not rare. Bladder and ureteral catheterization must be performed to prevent these complications.

Abstract
An infant enclosed in a rigid-walled chamber displaces a volume of air equal to its own volume. The volume of air displaced can be estimated by the change in pressure produced by a standard reduction in the chamber's volume according to Boyle's law. An instrument embodying this principle has been developed in which the differential pressure between two identical chambers is measured during equal sinusoidally imposed volume changes in the two. Problems arising from variable departure of conditions of pressure cycling, from isothermal towards adiabatic, have been dealt with by empirically derived corrections. Data are presented on the use of the method for low birth-weight infants.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine the slaughter and carcass traits of male lambs of the Akkaraman (A), Morkaraman (M), Awassi (IW), Karayaka (KR), Kıvırcık (KV) and Middle Anatolian Merino (MAM) sheep breeds. Fattening of all lambs started when they were at 90 days at weaning and finished when they reached bodyweight of 40 kg. The cold dressing percentage of lambs of A, M, and IW breeds were significantly lower than those of KV, KR and MAM. Fat depth and muscle area were significantly greater in KV and MAM lambs than those of the other breeds. There were significant differences among breeds in shoulder, leg and lean weights. Weights of back loin in KV and MAM lambs were significantly greater than those of the other breeds. The highest values for carcass fleshiness were obtained in MAM and IW lambs, but they had a significantly lower carcass fatness score. There were significant differences among the breeds in carcass compactness and leg conformation. The results of the present study indicated that A and MAM breeds could be recommended for desirable carcass characteristics.Keywords: Carcass cuts, indigenous sheep breed, intensive lamb finishing, meat formation, SEUROP classification
