Breastfeeding self-efficacy, body image, body acceptance, and partner support: Associations in Israeli postpartum women

PROBLEM

Research suggests that breastfeeding self-efficacy (i.e., a mother's perceived ability and confidence to breastfeed her new-born) is associated with body image experiences and wider psychosocial factors. However, much of this work is focused on negative body image and has relied on samples from predominantly Westernised, industrialised nations.

BACKGROUND

To extend knowledge, we sought to examine the extent to which indices of positive body image (body appreciation), negative body image (body dissatisfaction, breast size dissatisfaction), and psychosocial factors (body acceptance by others, postpartum partner support) are associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in sample of mothers from Israel.

HYPOTHESIS

We hypothesised that body appreciation, body dissatisfaction, breast size dissatisfaction, body acceptance by others, and postpartum partner support would each be significantly associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in Israeli mothers.

METHOD

A total of 352 mothers from Israel, with an infant aged six months or younger, were asked to complete an online survey that measured the aforementioned constructs.

FINDINGS

Correlational and linear model analyses indicated that only body appreciation was significantly associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy. Body acceptance by others was significantly associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in correlational but not regression analyses. These effects were consistent across primiparous and multiparous mothers.

DISCUSSION

In Israeli mothers, at least, a limited set of body image and body image-related indices appear to be associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy.

CONCLUSION

Overall, these findings suggest that positive body image may be associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in women from Israel, though more research is needed.

Reduction in regional cerebral blood flow during normal aging in man

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured by the 133Xenon inhalation method in a selected group of 44 normal non-hospitalized, normotensive subjects aged 19 to 79 years. rCBF was computed as the initial slope index value (ISI). Advancing age was associated with significant reductions in the mean brain and mean hemispheric ISI as well as in individual ISI levels measured from all areas in both hemispheres. Our findings suggest that decline of rCBF is not limited to normal elderly subjects but that it is a progressive phenomenon which begins at an earlier age.

Regional cerebral blood flow in patients with Parkinson's disease

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured by the xenon 133 inhalation method in 60 patients with Parkinson's disease and compared with flow data obtained in 51 age-matched normal control subjects. Mean brain rCBF was significantly reduced in patients with parkinsonism (9.5%, P less than .001). The most marked and significant rCBF decreases were observed in the older patients (18.8%, P less than .001). There was no correlation between degree of rCBF reduction and duration of parkinsonism. Decreases in hemispheric mean rCBF values were similar in both hemispheres even in patients with unilateral signs. The present study provides additional evidence for involvement of the cerebral cortex in Parkinson's disease. The rCBF decline may be associated in part with high prevalence of mental impairment and cortical atrophy and with diminished cerebral metabolic rate due to brain dopamine deficiency in patients with parkinsonism.

Bihemispheric decreases of regional cerebral blood flow in dementia: correlation with age-matched normal controls

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured by the xenon 133 inhalation method in 20 patients with senile and presenile dementia, and values were compared with flow data obtained in a series of 44 age-matched normal controls. The rCBF was reduced in patients with both presenile and senile dementia, and the degree of decrease exceeded the age-related rCBF decline in normal subjects. Similar rCBF reductions were observed in the left and right cerebral hemispheres and in general were homogeneously distributed in the various areas. The rCBF reductions in normal aging and in dementia may be associated with similar underlying cerebral morphological changes. Our findings suggest that the greater rCBF decreases in dementia compared with the values in age-matched controls may quantitatively reflect more severe pathological alterations in the brains of patients with intellectual deterioration.
