Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effects of Buzhong Yiqi granule on thyroid function and ovarian function in rats with experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT). METHODS EAT model was replicate by using the method of mixing and injecting porcine thyroglobulin with Freund's adjuvant and high iodine. Rats were randomly divided into normal control (NC) group, EAT model (EAT) group, selenium yeast (PC) group, low dose Buzhong Yiqi (BZYQ-L) group, medium dose Buzhong Yiqi (BZYQ-M) group and high dose Buzhong Yiqi (BZYQ-H) group. After two months of drug intervention according to dosage, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the levels of free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb) in peripheral blood of rats. The pathological changes of rat thyroid tissues were observed under light microscope with HE staining; ELISA was used to determine estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T), anti-müllerian hormone (AMH), and the pathological changes of rat ovarian tissues were observed under light microscope with hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS Compared with the NC group, BZYQ granule improved the thyroid and ovarian tissue morphology, and the levels of TPOAb, TGAb and TSH in the model group rats significantly increased (P < 0.05), the thyroid tissue was severely destroyed, the levels of E2, FSH, LH, T, AMH significantly increased (P < 0.05), and the ovary exhibited polycystic changes; Compared with the model group, TSH level in the BZYQ-L group rats decreased (P < 0.05), FSH, T, AMH levels decreased (P < 0.05), in the BZYQ-M group TPOAb, TSH levels decreased (P < 0.05), FSH, LH, T, AMH levels significantly decreased (P < 0.05), BZYQ-H group TPOAb, TGAb, TSH levels significantly decreased (P < 0.05), FSH, LH, T, AMH levels significantly decreased (P < 0.05), with the greatest improvement and significantly better than selenium yeast group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS BZYQ granule could regulate the thyroid function of EAT rats, reduce thyroid antibody titers, then act on the ovarian function, regulate hormone disorders, and alleviate the pathological damage of rat's ovarian tissues. The effect of high dose Buzhong Yiqi granule is the best.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of glutamine (Gln) on blood biochemistry and activity of serum enzymes in broilers challenged with Salmonella enteritidis. 240 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were distributed into four groups treated in a completely randomized design for 21 days. The groups included a noninfection control (CON); infected with S. enteritidis (SCC); infected +0.5% Gln (Gln 1), and infected +1.0% Gln (Gln 2). The plasma total protein, albumin, and globulin concentration, AST, LDH and CK activity in SCC group were lower than the CON overall except the albumin at 14, 21 d, and CK at 14 d. SCC group had lower RBC at 7 d; lower MCHC at 14 d; higher MCHC, and MCH at 7 d, or 21 d; higher WBC at d 7, 14, and 21; higher γ-GGT activity at d 14, and 21than the CON group. Gln group had higher plasma total protein, albumin, and globulin concentration, AST, LDH and CK activity than those in SCC overall except the albumin at 14, 21 d, and CK at 14 d. Gln group had higher RBC at 7 d; higher MCHC at 14 d; lower MCHC, and MCH at 7 d, or 21 d; lower WBC at d 7, 14, and 21, and lower γ-GGT activity at d 14, and 21 than the SCC group. These results suggest that Gln could effective improve the physiological responses and maintain the normal health status of S. enteritidis infection of broilers.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been demonstrated to be implicated in disorder of insulin secretion and diabetes mellitus. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the protective role of tempol, a powerful antioxidant, in chronic intermittent hypoxia
(IH)-induced pancreatic injury. The rat model of OSA was established by IH exposure. The pathological changes, increased blood-glucose level, and raised proinsulin/insulin ratio in pancreatic tissues of rats received IH were effectively relieved by tempol delivery. In addition, the enhanced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and inflammatory mediators, PGE2, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), NO, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in pancreatic tissue were suppressed by tempol. Moreover, tempol inhibited IH-induced apoptosis in pancreatic tissue as evidenced by upregulated Bcl-2 level, and downregulated Bax and cleaved caspase-3 levels. Finally, the abnormal activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling pathways induced by IH was restrained by tempol administration. In summary, our study demonstrates that tempol relieves IH-induced pancreatic injury by inhibiting inflammatory response and apoptosis, which provides theoretical basis for tempol as an effective treatment for OSA-induced pancreatic injury.

Abstract
Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) due to Staphylococcus aureus have become increasingly common in the outpatient setting; however, risk factors for differentiating methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) SSTIs are needed to better inform antibiotic treatment decisions. We performed a case-case-control study within 14 primary-care clinics in South Texas from 2007 to 2015. Overall, 325 patients [S. aureus SSTI cases (case group 1, n = 175); MRSA SSTI cases (case group 2, n = 115); MSSA SSTI cases (case group 3, n = 60); uninfected control group (control, n = 150)] were evaluated. Each case group was compared to the control group, and then qualitatively contrasted to identify unique risk factors associated with S. aureus, MRSA, and MSSA SSTIs. Overall, prior SSTIs [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 7·60, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3·31-17·45], male gender (aOR 1·74, 95% CI 1·06-2·85), and absence of healthcare occupation status (aOR 0·14, 95% CI 0·03-0·68) were independently associated with S. aureus SSTIs. The only unique risk factor for community-associated (CA)-MRSA SSTIs was a high body weight (⩾110 kg) (aOR 2·03, 95% CI 1·01-4·09).
