MR imaging features of pancreatic schwannoma: a Chinese case series and a systematic review of 25 cases

BACKGROUND

There is a paucity of existing literature centering on the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features of pancreatic schwannomas, due to the neoplasm's nonspecific presentation and its rarity. We aimed to identify the characteristic imaging features of pancreatic schwannoma.

METHODS

This retrospective search was conducted for histologically confirmed pancreatic schwannoma in multi-institutional database of pathology. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed before histologic examination and their MR imaging studies were independently reviewed. The search yielded six adults (mean age, 46 years) with a definitive histologic postoperative diagnosis of single pancreatic schwannoma each. Additionally, a comprehensive English and Chinese literature review for pancreatic schwannoma and reported MR-imaging findings since 1961 was also conducted. MR imaging features of those cases in the literature were analyzed, summarized and compared with our case series.

RESULTS

This rare entity appeared to be a well-circumscribed, exophytic, oval or round pancreatic mass with a mean greatest diameter of 3.7 cm. Five schwannomas were located in the pancreatic head-neck and one in the pancreatic tail. On MRI, all cases appeared hypointense on T1-weighted images, inhomogeneous hyperintense on T2-weighted images, and hyperintense on diffusion-weighted images. The mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of pancreatic schwannoma were 1.11 ± 0.29 × 10- 3 mm2/s and significantly lower than the surrounding pancreas. The lesion-to-pancreas signal intensity ratio (SIR) at unenhanced T1-weighted images was 0.53 ± 0.07. On dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, most of the lesions (67%, 4/6) showed homogeneously iso- or hypointense on arterial and portal venous phases, and hyperenhancement on delayed phase compared with the surrounding pancreas. In our analysis of the time intensity curves, all cases exhibited a gradual enhancement pattern.

CONCLUSIONS

A well-circumscribed mass displaying inhomogeneous hyperintensity on T2, marked hypointensity on T1, hyperintensity on DWI, and with early slight enhancement at arterial phase and progressive enhancement at portal venous and delayed phase, may suggest the diagnosis of pancreatic schwannoma.

Research into the intervention effect of folic acid on arsenic-induced heart abnormalities in fetal rats during the periconception period

BACKGROUND

The incidence of CHD is the highest among birth defects and is increasing year to year. CHD seriously harms the health of infants and young children and presents a large economic burden to families and society. The pathogenesis of CHD and preventive measures are the focus of current research. Our research aimed to explore the intervention effect of folic acid on heart abnormalities resulting from sodium arsenic (NaAsO2) exposure during the periconception period.

METHODS

Sixty 35-day-old female SD rats were randomly divided into 5 groups with 12 rats in each group. Group A was the control group. The rats were given distilled water and ordinary chow. The rats in group B were given distilled water containing 75 mg/L NaAsO2 and ordinary chow. The rats in groups C, D, and E were given distilled water containing 75 mg/L NaAsO2 and chow containing 0.53 mg/kg, 5.3 mg/kg, and 10.6 mg/kg folic acid, respectively. The general condition of the embryos and the histopathology of the embryonic hearts were examined. The acetylation levels of histone H3K9 in heart tissues and the expression levels of Mef2C (which is related to heart development) were observed.

RESULTS

The embryo weight and placental weight of groups B-E were significantly lower than those of group A (P < 0.05). The heart malformation rate of the fetal rats in groups B-E was significantly higher than that of the fetal rats in group A (P < 0.05). We found that the level of H3K9 acetylation in fetal rat cardiomyocytes in groups B-E was significantly higher than that in group A (P < 0.05) and that the level of H3K9 acetylation in groups C-E was lower than that in group B (P < 0.05). The mRNA level of Mef2C in fetal rat cardiomyocytes in group B-E was significantly higher than that in group A (P < 0.05), and the mRNA level of Mef2C in groups C-E was significantly lower than that in group B (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Supplementation with folic acid during the periconception period can interfere with the toxic effects of arsenic on the heart. The mechanism may be that lowering the acetylation levels of histone H3K9 in heart tissues leads to decreased expression levels of Mef2C, which may play a protective role in heart development in fetal rats.

Brassinosteroid signaling may regulate the germination of axillary buds in ratoon rice

BACKGROUND

Rice ratooning has traditionally been an important component of the rice cropping system in China. However, compared with the rice of the first harvest, few studies on factors effecting ratoon rice yield have been conducted. Because ratoon rice is a one-season rice cultivated using axillary buds that germinate on rice stakes and generate panicles after the first crop's harvest, its production is mainly affected by the growth of axillary buds. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the sprouting mechanism of axillary buds to improve the ratoon rice yield.

RESULTS

First, we observed the differentiation and growth dynamics of axillary buds at different nodes of Shanyou 63, and found that they differentiated from bottom to top before the heading of the mother stem, and that they developed very slowly. After heading they differentiated from top to bottom, and the ones on the top, especially the top 2nd node, developed much faster than those at the other nodes. The average length and dry weight of the axillary buds were significantly greater than those at other nodes by the yellow ripe stage, and they differentiated into pistils and stamens by 6 d after the yellow ripe stage. The morphology of vegetative organs from regenerated tillers of Shanyou 63 also suggested the superior growth of the upper buds, which was regulated by hormones, in ratoon rice. Furthermore, a comprehensive proteome map of the rice axillary buds at the top 2nd node before and after the yellow ripe stage was established, and some proteins involved in steroid biosynthesis were significantly increased. Of these, four took part in brassinosteroid (BR) biosynthesis. Thus, BR signaling may play a role in the germination of axillary buds of ratoon rice.

CONCLUSIONS

The data provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying BR signaling, and may allow researchers to explore further the biological functions of endogenous BRs in the germination of axillary buds of ratoon rice.

C4-HSL aptamers for blocking qurom sensing and inhibiting biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its structure prediction and analysis

This study aimed to screen DNA aptamers against the signal molecule C4-HSL of the rhl system for the inhibition of biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa using an improved systematic evolution of ligand by exponential enrichment (SELEX) method based on a structure-switching fluorescent activating bead. The aptamers against the C4-HSL with a high affinity and specifity were successfully obtained and evaluated in real-time by this method. Results of biofilm inhibition experiments in vitro showed that the biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa was efficiently reduced to about 1/3 by the aptamers compared with that of the groups without the aptamers. Independent secondary structure simulation and computer-aided tertiary structure prediction (3dRNA) showed that the aptamers contained a highly conserved Y-shaped structural unit. Therefore, this study benefits the search for new methods for the detection and treatment of P. aeruginosa biofilm formation.

From population to individuals: a new indicator for evaluating the appropriateness of clinical application of antibiotics

BACKGROUND

This study aims to establish a new indicator based on the anatomical therapeutic chemical/defined daily dose (ATC/DDD) system.

METHODS

Utilization data of antibiotics of inpatients in a university hospital were used to calculate the indicators of use rate (UR), use density (UD), and ratio of use density to use rate (UD/UR). According to the professional characteristics, the recommended values of UD/UR in different departments were established respectively. Crosswise comparison and appropriateness evaluation between different treatment groups with the same profession were performed. For individual inpatients with abnormally increased drug utilization index (DUI) and ratios of antimicrobial course to length of stay (C/S), detailed analysis was performed to examine whether any irrational drug utilization occurred.

RESULTS

The indicator UD/UR combines both dose and duration of treatment, which were the two main factors affecting the appropriateness of clinical application of antibiotics. Thus, it can more sensitively reveal the drug utilization of inpatients receiving antibiotics. UD/UR is also more suitable for evaluating the clinical appropriateness of antibiotic application than the macroscopic indicator, total UD, and could be applied at the macroscopic and microscopic levels.

CONCLUSIONS

The ratio UD/UR has great practical value and can serve as a reference for evaluating the appropriateness of clinical application of antibiotics.

Simultaneous photocatalytic and microbial degradation of dye-containing wastewater by a novel g-C3N4-P25/photosynthetic bacteria composite

Azo dyes are very resistant to light-induced fading and biodegradation. Existing advanced oxidative pre-treatment methods based on the generation of non-selective radicals cannot efficiently remove these dyes from wastewater streams, and post-treatment oxidative dye removal is problematic because it may leave many byproducts with unknown toxicity profiles in the outgoing water, or cause expensive complete mineralization. These problems could potentially be overcome by combining photocatalysis and biodegradation. A novel visible-light-responsive hybrid dye removal agent featuring both photocatalysts (g-C₃N₄-P₂₅) and photosynthetic bacteria encapsulated in calcium alginate beads was prepared by self-assembly. This system achieved a removal efficiency of 94% for the dye reactive brilliant red X-3b and also reduced the COD of synthetic wastewater samples by 84.7%, successfully decolorized synthetic dye-contaminated wastewater and reduced its COD, demonstrating the advantages of combining photocatalysis and biocatalysis for wastewater purification. The composite apparently degrades X-3b by initially converting the dye into aniline and phenol derivatives whose aryl moieties are then attacked by free radicals to form alkyl derivatives, preventing the accumulation of aromatic hydrocarbons that might suppress microbial activity. These alkyl intermediates are finally degraded by the photosynthetic bacteria.

Adult Tea Green Leafhoppers, Empoasca onukii (Matsuda), Change Behaviors under Varying Light Conditions

Insect behaviors are often influenced by light conditions including photoperiod, light intensity, and wavelength. Understanding pest insect responses to changing light conditions may help with developing alternative strategies for pest control. Little is known about the behavioral responses of leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) to light conditions. The behavior of the tea green leafhopper, Empoasca onukii Matsuda, was examined when exposed to different light photoperiods or wavelengths. Observations included the frequency of locomotion and cleaning activities, and the duration of time spent searching. The results suggested that under normal photoperiod both female and male adults were generally more active in darkness (i.e., at night) than in light. In continuous darkness (DD), the locomotion and cleaning events in Period 1 (7:00-19:00) were significantly increased, when compared to the leafhoppers under normal photoperiod (LD). Leafhoppers, especially females, changed their behavioral patterns to a two day cycle under DD. Under continuous illumination (continuous quartz lamp light, yellow light at night, and green light at night), the activities of locomotion, cleaning, and searching were significantly suppressed during the night (19:00-7:00) and locomotion activities of both females and males were significantly increased during the day (7:00-19:00), suggesting a shift in circadian rhythm. Our work suggests that changes in light conditions, including photoperiod and wavelength, can influence behavioral activities of leafhoppers, potentially affecting other life history traits such as reproduction and development, and may serve as a method for leafhopper behavioral control.
