CropGS-Hub: a comprehensive database of genotype and phenotype resources for genomic prediction in major crops

The explosive amount of multi-omics data has brought a paradigm shift both in academic research and further application in life science. However, managing and reusing the growing resources of genomic and phenotype data points presents considerable challenges for the research community. There is an urgent need for an integrated database that combines genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with genomic selection (GS). Here, we present CropGS-Hub, a comprehensive database comprising genotype, phenotype, and GWAS signals, as well as a one-stop platform with built-in algorithms for genomic prediction and crossing design. This database encompasses a comprehensive collection of over 224 billion genotype data and 434 thousand phenotype data generated from >30 000 individuals in 14 representative populations belonging to 7 major crop species. Moreover, the platform implemented three complete functional genomic selection related modules including phenotype prediction, user model training and crossing design, as well as a fast SNP genotyper plugin-in called SNPGT specifically built for CropGS-Hub, aiming to assist crop scientists and breeders without necessitating coding skills. Grafted Alkene Chains: Triggers for Defeating Contact Thermal Resistance in Composite Elastomers

The pursuit of enhancing the heat transfer performance of composite elastomers as the thermal interface materials (TIMs) is a compelling and timely endeavor, given the formidable challenges posed by interfacial thermal transport in the domains of energy science, electronic technology, etc. Despite the efficacy of phase change materials (PCMs) in enhancing composite elastomers' interfacial compatibility, thereby reducing contact thermal resistance for heat transfer improvement, their leakage post-transition has impeded the widespread adoption of this approach. Herein, a strategy is proposed for developing a solid-solid phase change composite elastomer by grafting alkene chains onto the crosslink network to eliminate the possibility of leakage. A series characterization suggest that the resulting material possesses a self-adjusting interfacial compatibility feature to help reduce contact thermal resistance for heat transfer facilitating. The investigations on adhesion strength and surface energy reveal that the presence of amorphous grafted alkane chains at the interface facilitates easier absorption onto the contacting solid surface, enhancing intermolecular interactions at the interface to promote across-boundary heat transfer. By integrating these findings with the thermal performance evaluation of composite elastomers using a real test vehicle, valuable insights are gained for the design of composite elastomers, establishing their suitability as TIMs in relevant fields.

Elastomer Composites with High Damping and Low Thermal Resistance via Hierarchical Interactions and Regulating Filler

Modern microelectronics and emerging technologies such as wearable electronics and soft robotics require elastomers to integrate high damping with low thermal resistance to avoid damage caused by vibrations and heat accumulation. However, the strong coupling between storage modulus and loss factor makes it generally challenging to simultaneously increase both thermal conductance and damping. Here, a strategy of introducing hierarchical interaction and regulating fillers in polybutadiene/spherical aluminum elastomer composites is reported to simultaneously achieve extraordinary damping ability of tan δ > 1.0 and low thermal resistance of 0.15 cm2  K W-1 , which surpasses state-of-the-art elastomers and their composites. The enhanced damping is attributed to increased energy dissipation via introducing the hierarchical hydrogen bond interactions in polybutadiene networks and the addition of spherical aluminum, which also functions as a thermally conductive filler to achieve low thermal resistance. As a proof of concept, the polybutadiene/spherical aluminum elastomer composites are used as thermal interface materials, showing effective heat dissipation for electronic devices in vibration scenarios. The combination of outstanding damping performance and extraordinary heat dissipation ability of the elastomer composites may create new opportunities for their applications in electronics.

Combining Ability Analysis of Yield-Related Traits of Two Elite Rice Restorer Lines in Chinese Hybrid Rice

Hybrid rice breeding is an important strategy for enhancing grain yield. Breeding high-performance parental lines and identifying combining abilities is a top priority for hybrid breeding. Yuenongsimiao (YNSM) and its derivative variety Yuehesimiao (YHSM) are elite restorer lines with a high ability of fertility restoration, from which 67 derived hybrid combinations have been authorized to different degrees in more than 110 instances in China. In this study, we found that YNSM and YHSM contained three candidate restorer-of-fertility (Rf) genes, Rf3, Rf4, and Rf5/Rf1a, that might confer their restoration ability. Subsequently, we investigated heterosis and combining ability of YNSM and YHSM using 50 F1 hybrids from a 5 × 10 incomplete diallelic mating design. Our results indicated that hybrid combinations exhibited significant genetic differences, and the additive effects of the parental genes played a preponderant role in the inheritance of observed traits. The metrics of plant height (PH), 1000-grain weight (TGW), panicle length (PL), and the number of spikelets per panicle (NSP) were mainly affected by genetic inheritance with higher heritability. Notably, the general combining ability (GCA) of YHSM exhibited the largest positive effect on the number of grains per panicle (NGP), NSP, PL, and TGW. Thus, YHSM had the largest GCA effect on yield per plant (YPP). In addition, the GCA of YNSM exhibited a positive impact on YPP, mainly due to the critical contribution of seed setting percentage (SSP). Moreover, YNSM and YHSM exhibited negative GCA effects on PH, implying that YNSM and YHSM could effectively enhance plant lodging resistance by reducing the plant height of the derived hybrids. Remarkably, among the hybrids, Yuanxiang A/YNSM (YXA/YNSM), Shen 08S/Yuemeizhan (S08S/YMZ), and Quan 9311A/YHSM (Q9311A/YHSM) represent promising new combinations with a higher specific combining ability (SCA) effect value on YPP with a value more than 3.50. Our research thus highlights the promising application for the rational utilization of YNSM and YHSM in hybrid rice breeding.

Mixed pyramid attention network for nuclear cataract classification based on anterior segment OCT images

Nuclear cataract (NC) is a leading ocular disease globally for blindness and vision impairment. NC patients can improve their vision through cataract surgery or slow the opacity development with early intervention. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) image is an emerging ophthalmic image type, which can clearly observe the whole lens structure. Recently, clinicians have been increasingly studying the correlation between NC severity levels and clinical features from the nucleus region on AS-OCT images, and the results suggested the correlation is strong. However, automatic NC classification research based on AS-OCT images has rarely been studied. This paper presents a novel mixed pyramid attention network (MPANet) to classify NC severity levels on AS-OCT images automatically. In the MPANet, we design a novel mixed pyramid attention (MPA) block, which first applies the group convolution method to enhance the feature representation difference of feature maps and then construct a mixed pyramid pooling structure to extract local-global feature representations and different feature representation types simultaneously. We conduct extensive experiments on a clinical AS-OCT image dataset and a public OCT dataset to evaluate the effectiveness of our method. The results demonstrate that our method achieves competitive classification performance through comparisons to state-of-the-art methods and previous works. Moreover, this paper also uses the class activation mapping (CAM) technique to improve our method's interpretability of classification results.

Acoustic topological beam nonreciprocity via the rotational Doppler effect

Reciprocity is a fundamental principle of wave physics related to time-reversal symmetry. Nonreciprocal wave behaviors have been pursued for decades because of their great scientific significance and tremendous potential applications. However, nonreciprocity devices have been based on manipulation of non-topological charge (TC) in most studies to date. Here, we introduce the rotational Doppler effect (RDE) into the acoustic system to achieve nonreciprocal control of the TC beam. We use the metasurface to generate a vortex beam with a defined TC. By rotating the metasurface with specific angular velocity, the wave vector of the transmitted wave obtains positive and negative transition flexibly due to the RDE. As a result, isolated and propagating states of the vortex beam can be realized by controlling the rotation direction, representing nonreciprocal propagation. Our work also provides an alternative method for the application of TC beams and the realization of nonreciprocity.
