Boosting the Viable Water Harvesting in Solar Vapor Generation: From Interfacial Engineering to Devices Design

Continuously increasing demand for the life-critical water resource induces severe global water shortages. It is imperative to advance effective, economic, and environmentally sustainable strategies to augment clean water supply. The present work reviews recent reports on the interfacial engineering to devices design of solar vapor generation (SVG) system for boosting the viability of drinkable water harvesting. Particular emphasis is placed on the basic principles associated with the interfacial engineering of solar evaporators capable of efficient solar-to-thermal conversion and resulting freshwater vapor via eliminating pollutants from quality-impaired water sources. The critical configurations manufacturing of the devices for fast condensation is then highlighted to harvest potable liquid water. Fundamental and practical challenges, along with prospects for the targeted materials architecture and devices modifications of SVG system are also outlined, aiming to provide future directions and inspiring critical research efforts in this emerging and exciting field.

Electroencephalography microstates as novel functional biomarkers for insomnia disorder

Background

Insomnia disorder (ID) is one of the most common mental disorders. Research on ID focuses on exploring its mechanism of disease, novel treatments and treatment outcome prediction. An emerging technique in this field is the use of electroencephalography (EEG) microstates, which offer a new method of EEG feature extraction that incorporates information from both temporal and spatial dimensions.

Aims

To explore the electrophysiological mechanisms of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for ID treatment and use baseline microstate metrics for the prediction of its efficacy.

Methods

This study included 60 patients with ID and 40 age-matched and gender-matched good sleep controls (GSC). Their resting-state EEG microstates were analysed, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and polysomnography (PSG) were collected to assess sleep quality. The 60 patients with ID were equally divided into active and sham groups to receive rTMS for 20 days to test whether rTMS had a moderating effect on abnormal microstates in patients with ID. Furthermore, in an independent group of 90 patients with ID who received rTMS treatment, patients were divided into optimal and suboptimal groups based on their median PSQI reduction rate. Baseline EEG microstates were used to build a machine-learning predictive model for the effects of rTMS treatment.

Results

The class D microstate was less frequent and contribute in patients with ID, and these abnormalities were associated with sleep onset latency as measured by PSG. Additionally, the abnormalities were partially reversed to the levels observed in the GSC group following rTMS treatment. The baseline microstate characteristics could predict the therapeutic effect of ID after 20 days of rTMS, with an accuracy of 80.13%.

Conclusions

Our study highlights the value of EEG microstates as functional biomarkers of ID and provides a new perspective for studying the neurophysiological mechanisms of ID. In addition, we predicted the therapeutic effect of rTMS on ID based on the baseline microstates of patients with ID. This finding carries great practical significance for the selection of therapeutic options for patients with ID.

Urantide alleviates atherosclerosis-related liver and kidney injury via the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in ApoE(-/-) mice

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the role of urantide in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis (AS)-related liver and kidney injury by antagonizing the urotensin II/urotensin receptor (UII/UT) system and regulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

METHODS

Atherosclerotic ApoE-/- mice were treated with 20 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, and 40 mg/kg urantide for 14 days.

RESULTS

When ApoE-/- mice developed AS, significant pathological changes occurred in the liver and kidney, and the UII/UT system in tissue was highly activated; furthermore, the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway was activated, and proteins related to this signalling pathway, such as GSK-3β, AXIN2, CK‑1, and APC, were significantly downregulated. After urantide treatment, the pathological damage to the liver and kidney was effectively improved, the activity of the UII/UT system was effectively inhibited, and the expression of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway and related proteins was restored. Wnt/β-catenin signals were mainly localized in the cytoplasm, renal tubules, and interstitium.

CONCLUSION

Urantide could improve AS-related liver and kidney injury by antagonizing the UII/UT system, and the improvements in liver and kidney function in atherosclerotic ApoE-/- mice may be related to inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway.

Proteomics analysis of serum from thymoma patients

Thymoma is the most common malignant tumor in thymic epithelial tumors (TETS). This study aimed to identify the changes in serum proteomics in patients with thymoma. Proteins were extracted from twenty patients with thymoma serum and nine healthy controls and prepared for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. Data independent acquisition (DIA) quantitative proteomics technique was used to examine the serum proteome. Differential proteins of abundance changes in the serum were identified. Bioinformatics was used to examine the differential proteins. Functional tagging and enrichment analysis were conducted using the Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases. The string database was used to assess the interaction of different proteins. In all, 486 proteins were found in all samples. There were differences in 58 serum proteins between patients and healthy blood donors, 35 up-regulated and 23 down-regulated. These proteins are primarily exocrine and serum membrane proteins involved in controlling immunological responses and antigen binding, according to GO functional annotation. KEGG functional annotation showed that these proteins play a significant role in the complement and coagulation cascade and the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signal pathway. Notably, the KEGG pathway (complement and coagulation cascade) is enriched, and three key activators were up-regulated: von willebrand factor (VWF), coagulation factor v (F5) and vitamin k-dependent protein c (PC). Protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis showed that six proteins ((VWF, F5, thrombin reactive protein 1 (THBS1), mannose-binding lectin-associated serine protease 2 (MASP2), apolipoprotein B (APOB), and apolipoprotein (a) (LPA)) were up-regulated and two proteins (Metalloproteinase inhibitor 1(TIMP1), ferritin light chain (FTL)) were down-regulated. The results of this study showed that several proteins involved in complement and coagulation cascades were up-regulated in the serum of patients.

Operating characteristics of the factor flow networks in rural areas: A case study of a typical industrial town in China

The networks of factor flows in rural areas are the main support for rural revitalization, which has become one of the research trends in rural geography. Taking a typical industrial town in China as an example, the study explored the operating characteristics of rural factor flow networks and the relations of multi-factor flows based on the social survey method and fine-grained flows data. Results showed that population flows, capital flows and policy flows increased significantly in rural areas. Thereinto, population flows, especially labor flows, mainly ran into the townships and industrial cluster villages, so did capital inflows and outflows, while policy flows ran around the township. The villages with dense population and capital flows formed the "central villages", which had exceeded the township in the two flow networks. Policy flows and capital flows played a guiding role in population flows, so did the policy flows on the capital flows. Meanwhile, the population flows and the capital flows could reinforce each other. In conclusion, a multi-center structure network with the separation of economic center and administrative center had been formed in rural areas. And there was a close interaction between these factor flows. Furthermore, the theoretical model of town-village symbiotic network was constructed.
