Molecular Symmetry of Small-Molecule Passivating Agents Improves Crystal Quality of Perovskite Solar Cells

Direct interaction with the defect sites of perovskite, functional groups have become the focal point of attention as passivating agents. However, the molecular parent nucleus determines the overall physical properties of the molecule, including the push-pull electronic characteristics of the functional groups, which poses significant challenges in terms of selectivity. Here, we discovered that the binary acid structure based on thiophene as the parent nucleus, due to changes in molecular symmetry, caused significant changes in the molecular dipole moment, resulting in significant changes in the passivation effects on under-coordinated Pb2+ in perovskite solar cells. For the axially symmetric thiophen-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (TPDC), the high dipole moment formed a concentrated surface negative potential on the carboxyl group, showing significant superiority over the centrally symmetric thieno[3,2-b] thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (TTDC) in forming high-quality perovskite crystals, suppressing charge recombination, enhancing effective charge transport, and raising internal electric fields. The power conversion efficiencies of the fully printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells based on TPDC and TTDC were 17.15 % and 14.79 %, respectively, exhibiting important research value in the field of small molecule passivation mechanism research.

Self-Assembly of Glycolipid Epimers: Their Supramolecular Morphology Control and Immunoactivation Function

Although advances have been made in carbohydrate-based macromolecular self-assembly, harnessing epimers of carbohydrates to perform molecular assembly and further investigating the properties of supramolecular materials remain little explored. Herein, two classes of stereoisomeric glycolipid amphiphiles based on d-N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) are reported, and they can aggregate into ribbon-like structures in the aqueous solution due to amphiphilic property, which allow to obtain glycocalyx-mimicking supramolecular materials. The subtle distinction in glycoside configuration of GalNAc-α-SSA and GalNAc-β-SSA dictates the different molecular packing in self-assembled structures. Since driven by the distinguishing carbohydrate-carbohydrate interactions, the ribbon-like architectures transform into spherical nanostructures via mixing GalNAc-α-SSA and GalNAc-β-SSA. The resulting spherical micelles fabricated by blending glycolipid epimers can potentiate the macrophage- and dendritic cell-mediated immune responses in vitro. Such glycolipid epimers will pave the way to create glycocalyx-mimicking immune modulators by incorporating stereochemistry into supramolecular self-assembly.

Mechanically Interlocked [2]Rotaxane Aerogels with Tunable Morphologies and Mechanical Properties

Mechanical bonds have been utilized as promising motifs to construct mechanically interlocked aerogels (MIAs) with mechanical adaptivity and multifunctionality. However, fabricating such aerogels with not only precise chemical structures but also dynamic features remains challenging. Herein, we present MIAs carrying dense [2]rotaxane units, which bestow both the stability and flexibility of the aerogel network. Owing to the stable chemical structure of a [2]rotaxane, MIAs possessing a precise and full-scale mechanically interlocked network could be fabricated with the aid of diverse solvents. In addition, the dynamic nature of the [2]rotaxane resulted in morphologies and mechanical performances of the MIAs that can be dramatically modulated under chemical stimuli. We hope that the structure-property relationship in MIAs will facilitate the development of mechanically interlocked materials and provide novel opportunities toward constructing smart materials with multifunctionalities.

Sequence-Activated Fluorescent Nanotheranostics for Real-Time Profiling Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), as one of the most malignant tumors with dense desmoplastic stroma, forms a specific matrix barrier to hinder effective diagnosis and therapy. To date, a paramount challenge is in the search for intelligent nanotheranostics for such hypopermeable tumors, especially in breaking the PDAC-specific physical barrier. The unpredictable in vivo behaviors of nanotheranostics, that is, real-time tracking where, when, and how they cross the physical barriers and are taken up by tumor cells, are the major bottleneck. Herein, we elaborately design sequence-activated nanotheranostic TCM-U11&Cy@P with dual-channel near-infrared fluorescence outputs for monitoring in vivo behaviors in a sequential fashion. This nanotheranostic with a programmable targeting capability effectively breaks through the PDAC barriers. Ultimately, the released aggregation-induced emission (AIE) particle TCM-U11 directly interacts with PDAC cells and penetrates into the deep tissue. Impressively, this fluorescent nanotheranostic intraoperatively can map human clinical PDAC specimens with high resolution. We believe that this unique sequence-activated fluorescent strategy expands the repertoire of nanotheranostics in the treatment of hypopermeable tumors.

Exploring a naturally tailored small molecule for stretchable, self-healing, and adhesive supramolecular polymers

Polymeric materials with integrated functionalities are required to match their ever-expanding practical applications, but there is always a trade-off between complex material performances and synthetic simplification. A simple and effective synthesis route is reported to transform a small molecule of biological origin, thioctic acid, into a high-performance supramolecular polymeric material, which combines processability, ultrahigh stretchability, rapid self-healing ability, and reusable adhesivity to surfaces. The proposed one-step preparation process of this material involves the mixing of three commercially available feedstocks at mild temperature without any external solvent and a subsequent cooling process that resulted in a dynamic, high-density, and dry supramolecular polymeric network cross-linked by three different types of dynamic chemical bonds, whose cooperative effects in the network enable high performance of this supramolecular polymeric material.
