Chalcogen and Pnictogen Bonding-Modulated Multiple-Constituent Chiral Self-Assemblies

Chalcogen and pnictogen-based σ-hole interactions have shown limited applications in controlling supramolecular chirality. In this work, we employed chalcogen and pnictogen bonding to control supramolecular chirality in a multiple-constituent system with modulate chiral optics. Phenyl phosphonium-selenium conjugates with electrophilic σ-hole regions were allowed to coassemble with the π-conjugated deprotonated amino acids. Control experimental and computational results evidenced that the chalcogen and pnictogen bonding formed with carboxylates induced morphological transformation from achiral membranes to chiral helical nanotubes with emerging supramolecular chirality. Also, the chiral helical architectures accomplished inverted handedness and chiroptical activities, including circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. Finally, synergistic chalcogen and pnictogen bonding was employed to stabilize the charge-transfer complexation to afford ternary chiral co-assemblies with evolved chiral optics and luminescence. This work, showing the role of chalcogen and pnictogen bonding in manipulating supramolecular chirality and optics, will expand the toolbox in the fabrication and property-tuning of chiral materials containing elements of Group VA and VIA.

σ-Hole interactions in small-molecule compounds containing divalent sulfur groups R1-S-R2

Hydrogen bonds, aromatic stacking contacts and σ-hole interactions are all noncovalent interactions commonly observed in biological systems. Structural data derived from the Protein Data Bank showed that methionine residues can interact with oxygen atoms through directional S...O contacts in the protein core. In the present work, the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) was used in conjunction with ab initio calculations to explore the σ-hole interaction properties of small-molecule compounds containing divalent sulfur. CSD surveys showed that 7095 structures contained R₁-S-R₂ groups that interact with electronegative atoms like N, O, S and Cl. Frequencies of occurrence and geometries of the interaction were dependent on the nature of R₁ and R₂, and the hybridization of carbon atoms in C,C-S, and C,S-S fragments. The most common interactions in terms of frequency of occurrence were C,C-S...O, C,C-S...N and C,C-S...S with predominance of Csp². The strength of the chalcogen interaction increased when enhancing the electron-withdrawing character of the substituents. The most positive electrostatic potentials (V_S,max; illustrating positive σ-holes) calculated on R₁-S-R₂ groups were located on the S atom, in the S-R₁ and S-R₂ extensions, and increased with electron-withdrawing R₁ and R₂ substituents like the interaction strength did. As with geometric data derived from the CSD, interaction geometries calculated for some model systems and representative CSD compounds suggested that the interactions were directed in the extensions of S-R₁ and S-R₂ bonds. The values of complexation energies supported attractive interactions between σ-hole bond donors and acceptors, enhanced by dispersion. The interactions of R₁-S-R₂ with large V_S,max and nucleophiles with large negative V_S,min coherently provided more negative energies. According to NBO analysis, chalcogen interactions consisted of charge transfer from a nucleophile lone pair to an S-R₁ or S-R₂ antibonding orbital. The directional σ-hole interactions at R₁-S-R₂ can be useful in crystal engineering and the area of supramolecular biochemistry.

The protonated 2-halogenated imidazolium cation as the noncovalent interaction donor: the σ-hole and π-hole interactions

The σ-hole and π-hole of the protonated 2-halogenated imidazolium cation (XC₃H₄N₂⁺; X = F, Cl, Br, I) were investigated and analyzed. The monomers of (CH₃)₃SiY(Y=F, Cl, Br, I), considered as the Lewis base, were combined with the σ-hole and π-hole of XC₃H₄N₂⁺ to form the σ-hole and π-hole interactions in the bimolecular complexes (CH₃)₃SiY · · · XC₃H₄N₂⁺ and (CH₃)₃SiY · · · C₃(X)H₄N₂⁺(X/Y=F, Cl, Br, I), respectively. For both the σ-hole and π-hole interactions, the equilibrium geometries of complexes show regular changes according to the sequence of heavy sequence of the noncovalent interaction acceptors and donors. The electrostatic energy is the main contribution in the formation of both kinds of interactions, it has linear relations with the V _S,max values of σ-hole and the V' _S,max values of π-hole. Both the σ-hole and π-hole interactions belong to the closed-shell and noncovalent interactions. The π-hole interactions are stronger than the σ-hole interactions. For the π-hole interactions, the contribution percents of the dispersion energies are somewhat greater than those of the σ-hole interactions, while it is contrary for the polarization energy. Comparative studies on group III σ-hole and π-hole interactions

The σ-hole of M2 H6 (M = Al, Ga, In) and π-hole of MH3 (M = Al, Ga, In) were discovered and analyzed, the bimolecular complexes M2 H6 ···NH3 and MH3 ···N2 P2 F4 (M = Al, Ga, In) were constructed to carry out comparative studies on the group III σ-hole interactions and π-hole interactions. The two types of interactions are all partial-covalent interactions; the π-hole interactions are stronger than σ-hole interactions. The electrostatic energy is the largest contribution for forming the σ-hole and π-hole interaction, the polarization energy is also an important factor to form the M···N interaction. The electrostatic energy contributions to the interaction energy of the σ-hole interactions are somewhat greater than those of the π-hole interactions. However, the polarization contributions for the π-hole interactions are somewhat greater than those for the σ-hole interactions.
