The immobilization of cadmium by rape straw derived biochar in alkaline conditions: Sorption isotherm, molecular binding mechanism, and in-situ remediation of Cd-contaminated soil

The issue of cadmium (Cd) contamination in alkaline soils is escalating, necessitating the prompt implementation of effective passivation strategies. Biochar has gained significant attention for its potential in immobilizing heavy metals; however, the suitability of biochar as a remediation material and its micro-scale interaction mechanisms with Cd under alkaline conditions remain unclear. Rape straw (RS) were pyrolyzed at 400 °C (RB400) and 700 °C (RB700) to produce biochar. Adsorption and soil incubation experiments were carried out to assess the feasibility of using rape straw derived biochar pyrolyze at different temperatures and understanding their remediation mechanisms in alkaline environments. The sorption capacity for Cd immobilization was evaluated using sorption isotherms, revealing that RB700 exhibited enhanced Cd sorption performance with a maximum sorption capacity of 119.33 mg g-1 calculated from the Langmuir isotherm equation at pH 8. Cd L3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy analysis confirmed that the dominant sorption species of Cd were organic Cd in RB400, with CdCO3 precipitation increased to 73.9% in RB700. Solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) spectroscopy demonstrated that aromatic and carboxyl C functional groups are involved in the organic sorption of Cd through complexation and Cd2+-π interactions in alkaline solutions. The precipitation of CdCO3 in RB700 may resulted in a more effective passivation effect compared to RB400, leading to a significant 15.54% reduction in the DTPA-Cd content in Cd-contaminated soil. These findings highlight the effective Cd passivation Cd in alkaline environments by rape straw derived biochar, providing new molecular insights into the Cd retention mechanism of biochar. Furthermore, it presents novel ideas for improving remediation approaches for alkaline Cd-contaminated soils.

Alder encroachment alters subsoil organic carbon pool and chemical structure in a boreal peatland of Northeast China

Boreal peatlands have been experiencing increased abundances of symbiotic dinitrogen-fixing woody plants (mainly alder species). However, how alder encroachment alters soil organic carbon (C) pool and stability is unclear. To examine the effects of alder encroachment on soil organic C, we measured soil organic C pool, phenol oxidase (POX) activity, organic C mineralization rate, and organic C chemical structure (alkyl C, O-alkyl C, aromatic C, and carbonyl C) using solid-state ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-40 cm depths in the Alnus sibirica islands and adjacent open peatlands in the north of Da'xingan Mountain, Northeast China. A. sibirica islands had 28 %, 25 %, and 30 % greater POX activity and 36 %, 31 %, and 100 % higher organic C mineralization than open peatlands in the 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-40 cm soil depths, respectively. Despite no significant changes in the 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm depths, alder encroachment reduced soil organic C pool in the 20-40 cm depth. Soil organic C pool in the 0-40 cm depth was lower in A. sibirica islands (298 Mg ha^-1) than in the open peatlands (315 Mg ha^-1). Moreover, alder encroachment increased alkyl (7 %) and carbonyl (57 %) C fractions but reduced O-alkyl C fraction (16 %) in the 20-40 cm depth, resulting in increased aliphaticity and recalcitrance indices. These findings suggest that alder encroachment will reduce soil organic C accumulation by accelerating microbial decomposition, and highlight that increased biochemical stabilization would attenuate soil organic C loss after alder expansion in boreal peatlands. Our results will help assess and project future C budgets in boreal peatlands.

Synthesis and bioactivities of novel thioether/sulfone derivatives containing 1,2,3-thiadiazole and 1,3,4-oxadiazole/thiadiazole moiety

A series of new thioether/sulfone compounds containing 1,2,3-thiadiazole and 1,3,4-oxadiazole/1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety were synthesized, the structures of all products were confirmed by IR, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, and element analysis. Preliminary antifungal activity test showed that compound 8a exhibited moderate antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum at 50μg/mL. Preliminary antiviral activity results showed that compounds 7a, 7c, 7d, 8a, and 9a displayed high antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic virus. The present work demonstrates that thioether/sulfone heterocyclic derivatives could be considered as new lead compounds for antiviral studies.

Synthesis and anticancer activities of 5,6,7-trimethoxy-N-phenyl(ethyl)-4-aminoquinazoline derivatives

A series of 5,6,7-trimethoxy-N-phenyl(ethyl)-4-aminoquinazoline compounds was prepared by microwave irradiation and conventional heating methods. Compounds 6p, 6q, and 6x strongly inhibited extracellular regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) phosphorylation induced by epidermal growth factor (EGF) at 1.28 μM in PC3 cells. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay showed that all compounds had certain anticancer activities, and the IC₅₀ values of 6x were 6.2 ± 0.9, 3.2 ± 0.1, and 3.1 ± 0.1 μM against PC3, BGC823, and Bcap37 cells, respectively. Acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining, Hoechst 33258 staining, DNA ladder, and flow cytometry analyses revealed that 6x induced cell apoptosis in PC3 cells, with apoptosis ratios of 11.6% at 1 μM and 31.8% at 10 μM after 72 h.
