Abstract
Clostridium autoethanogenum can to convert waste gases (CO2, CO, H2) and xylose from hydrolyzed biomass into acetate, lactate, formate, ethanol and 2,3-butanediol, being a candidate for the transformation of waste streams of lignocellulosic biorefineries. Electro-fermentation (EF) modify the pattern of traditional fermentations resulting in improved product yields as has been shown when using Clostridium strains. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of pH on microbial growth and product distribution during fermentation and EF of xylose by C. autoethanogenum DSM10061. Fermentation and EF were carried out in a H-type reactor at three controlled pH: 5.0, 5.5 and 5.8, and at a fixed potential of -600 mV (versus Ag/AgCl) in the EF. The experiments showed that maximum biomass concentration increased as the pH increased in fermentation and EF. In accordance with maximum biomass reached, the highest substrate conversion was observed at pH 5.8 for both systems, with 76.80 % in fermentation and 96.18 % in EF. Moreover, the highest concentrations of acetic acid (1.41 ± 0.07 g L-1) and ethanol (1.45 ± 0.15 g L-1) were obtained at the end of cultures in the EF at pH 5.8. The production of lactic and formic acid decreased by the application of the external potential regardless of the pH value, reaching the lowest productivity at pH 5.8. In contrast, the specific productivity of acetic acid and ethanol was lower in both fermentation and EF at the lowest pH. Furthermore, the presence of 0.06 g L-1 of 2,3-butanediol was only detected in EF at pH 5.8. The results revealed that EF modulated microbial metabolism, which can be explained by a possible increased generation of NADP+/NADPH cofactors, which would redirect the metabolic pathway to more reduced products.

Abstract
Medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), the secondary products of traditional anaerobic fermentation, can be produced via chain elongation (CE), a process often retarded due to the difficulty during interspecies electron transfer (IET). This study employed redox mediators, neutral red (NR), methyl viologen (MV), and methylene blue (MB) as electron shuttles to expedite the electro-fermentation for caproate production by improving IET. Results showed that MV increased the MCFAs production by promoting acetate to ethanol conversion, leading to the highest MCFAs selectivity of 68.73%. While NR was indicated to improve CE by encouraging H2 production, and the biocathode had the highest electrical activity due to the smallest internal resistance and largest capacitance increase of 96% than the control. A higher proportion of Sutterella, Prevotella, and Hydrogenophaga, linked with the H2 mediated interspecies electron transfer (MIET) during CE process, was observed across redox mediators supplied groups compared to the control. The presence of mediators led to an elevated abundance of key enzymes for enhanced CE process and electron transfer. This study provided the perspective of the stimulated electron transfer for improved MCFAs production in electro-fermentation systems.

Abstract
Succinate is the end product of anaerobic metabolism of Escherichia coli, and its over-production needs abundant reducing force. Electro-fermentation (EF) is a novel biotechnology to steer and control fermentative processes by supplying extra electrons. However, E.coli is a non-electroactive strain which needs the support of electron shuttle in EF. Here, membrane engineering strategies of "Building bridges" via screening direct electron transport pathway and "Digging tunnels" via screening membrane porins were developed to improve the transmembrane transport of electron during the cathodic electro-fermentation (CEF). As a result, the total electron quantity during electro-fermentation was increased from 1.21 mmol to 7.90 mmol, and succinate yield was increased by 23.3% when these strategies simultaneously were applied to the succinate candidate E. coli Suc260. Hence, this study provides a reference mode for designing and constructing non-electroactive bacteria for electro-fermentation of reductive metabolites.

Abstract
In this study, we show how electrochemically mediated bioconversion can greatly increase the co-production of 1,3-propanediol and organic acids from glycerol in an industrial bioprocess using a Clostridum pasteurianum mutant. Remarkably, an enhanced butyrate formation was observed due to a weakened butanol pathway of the mutant. This allowed the strain to have a higher ATP generation for an enhanced growth, higher glycerol consumption and PDO production. The PDO titer reached as high as 120.67 g/L at a cathodic current of -400 mA, which is 33% higher than that without electricity, with a concurrent increase of butyric acid by 80%. To fully recover the increased PDO and organic acids, a novel downstream process combining thin film evaporation of PDO and esterification of organic acids with ethanol was developed. This enables the efficient co-production of PDO, ethyl acetate and ethyl butyrate with a high overall carbon use of 87%.

Abstract
As a chain elongation (CE) model strain, Clostridium kluyveri has been used in the studies of bioaugmentation of caproate production. However, its application in the novel electro-fermentation CE system for bioaugmentation is still unclear. In this study, the CE performances, with or without bioaugmentation and in conventional or electro-fermentation systems were compared. And the mechanism of electrochemical-bioaugmentation by constructing a co-culture of Acetobacterium woodii and Clostridium kluyveri were further verified. Results demonstrated that the bioaugmentation treatments have better CE performance, especially in electro-fermentation system, with a highest caproate concentration of 4.68 g·L-1. Mechanism analysis revealed that C. kluyveri responded to the electric field and emerged synergy with the acetogens, which was proved by the increases of C. kluyveri colonization and the acetogens abundance in biofilm and supported by the co-culture experiment. This study provides a novel insight of microbial synergy mechanism of C. kluyveri during CE bioaugmentation in electro-fermentation system.

Abstract
Substrate toxicity would limit the upgrading of waste biomass to medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). In this work, two fermentation modes of electro-fermentation (EF) and traditional fermentation (TF) with different concentration of liquor fermentation waste (20%, 40%, 60%) were used for MCFAs production as well as mechanism investigation. The highest caproate (4.04 g/L) and butyrate (13.96 g/L) concentrations were obtained by EF at 40% substrate concentration. TF experiments showed that the substrate concentration above 40% severely inhibited ethanol oxidation and products formation. Compared with TF mode, the total substrates consumption and product yields under EF mode were significantly increased by 2.6%-43.5% and 54.0%-83.0%, respectively. Microbial analysis indicated that EF effectively alleviated substrate toxicity and enriched chain elongation bacteria, particularly Clostridium_sensu_stricto 12, thereby promoting ethanol oxidation and products formation. Caproiciproducens tolerated high-concentration substrates to ensure normal lactate metabolism. This study provides a new way to produce MCFAs from high concentration wastewater.

Abstract
Electro-fermentation (EF) has been proposed as a method to improve the yield of medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA). In this study, MCFA production from Chinese liquor wastewater (yellow water) was investigated and corresponding composite electron donors (lactate and ethanol in yellow water) were investigated by different electrical stimulation modes. The caproate yield under whole period electrical stimulation increased by 250.9% compared with open circuit. The oxidation-dominated and reduction-dominated periods of the fermentation process were divided, and the segmented electrical stimulation experiment showed the caproate yield under reduction-dominated EF system further increased by 288.5% compared with open circuit. The microbial diversity analysis demonstrated that Clostridium 12 might be enriched better by keeping open circuit during EDs consumption, meanwhile the bacteria with potential negative effects on CE were inhibited. The electrical stimulation mode of EF process was optimized and provided a new way to recycle organic wastewater.

Abstract
Biotransformation of organic substrates via acidogenic fermentation (AF) to high-value products such as C1-C6 carboxylic acids and alcohol serves as platform chemicals for various industrial applications. However, the AF technology suffers from low product titers due to thermodynamic constraints. Recent studies suggest that augmenting AF redox potential can regulate the metabolic pathway and provide seamless electron flow by lowering the activation energy barrier, thus positively influencing the substrate utilization rate, product yield, and speciation. Hence, the augmented AF system with an exogenous electricity supply is termed as electro-fermentation (EF), which has enormous potential to strengthen the fermentation technology domain. Therefore, this critical review systematically discusses the current understanding of EF with a special focus on the extracellular electron transfer mechanism of electroactive bacteria and provides perspectives and research gaps to further improve the technology for green chemical synthesis, sustainable waste management, and circular bio-economy.

Abstract
Electro-fermentation (EF) is an attractive way to implement the chain elongation (CE) process, by controlling the fermentation environment and reducing the dosage of external electron donors (EDs). However, besides the coexistence performance of external EDs and electrode, applications of EF technology on the fermentation broth containing both EDs and electron acceptors during CE process, are all still limited. The current study investigated the contribution of EF to caproate production, under different acetate: ethanol ratios (RA/E). The effect of multiple EDs, both from ethanol and the bio-cathode, on caproate production, was also assessed. A proof-of-concept, based on experimental data, was presented for the EF-mediated ethanol-driven CE process. Experimental results showed that ethanol, together with the additional electron donors from the bio-cathode, was beneficial for the stable caproate production. The caproate concentration increased with the decrease of RA/E, while the bio-cathode further contributed to 10.7%-26.1 % increase of caproate concentration. Meanwhile, the hydrogen partial pressure tended to 0.10 ± 0.01 bar in all controlled EF reactors, thus favoring caproate production. This was attributed to the increased availability EDs, i.e., hydrogen and ethanol, generated by the electrode and electrochemically active bacteria (EAB), which might create multiple additional pathways to achieve caproate production. Molecular ecological networks analysis of the key microbiomes further revealed underlying cooperative relationships, beneficial to the chain elongation process. The genus Clostridium_sensu_stricto, as the dominant microbial community, was positively related to acetogens, EAB and fermenters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-cost raw materials such as lignocellulosic materials have been utilized in second-generation ethanol production process. However, the sequential and slow conversion of xylose into target products remains one of the main challenges for realizing efficient industrial lignocellulosic biorefinery. RESULTS By applying different constant potentials to different microbial electrolysis cells with xylose as the sole carbon source, we analyzed the output of metabolites, microbial community structures, electron flow, and carbon flow in the process of xylose electro-fermentation by domesticated activated sludge. The bioreactors produced currents when applying positive potentials. The peak currents of the + 0.242 V, + 0.542 V and + 0.842 V reactors were 0.96 × 10-6 A, 3.36 × 10-6 A and 6.43 × 10-6 A, respectively. The application of potentials promoted the xylose consumption, and the maximum consumption rate in the + 0.542 V reactor was 95.5%, which was 34.8 times that of the reactor without applied potential. The potential application also promoted the production of ethanol and acetate. The maximum ethanol yield (0.652 mol mol-1 xylose) was obtained in the + 0.842 V reactor. The maximum acetate concentration (1,874 µmol L-1) was observed in the + 0.842 V reactor. The optimal potential for ethanol production was + 0.842 V with the maximum ethanol yield and energy saving. The application of positive potential caused the microorganisms to carry out ethanol fermentation, and the application of negative potential forced the microorganisms to carry out acetic fermentation. The potential application changed the diversity and community structure of microorganisms in the reactors, and the two most significantly changed families were Paenibacillaceae and Bacillaceae. CONCLUSION The constructed microbial electrolysis cells with different potentials obtained better production yield and selectivity compared with the reactor without applied potential. Our work provides strategies for the subsequent fermentation processes with different needs.

Abstract
Fermentation technology has unprecedented potential to upgrade state-of-art biotechnology and refine the processes used in existing ones, taking into account of complex technical, economic and environmental factors. Given the economic importance and ongoing challenges of biotech sector, multidisciplinary engineering technologies is poised to become an increasingly important tool along with the emergence of modern technology and innovation. This article reviews recent technology advancement in the field of fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Interesting research progress has been made by leveraging multiple engineering fields such as electrical engineering, information engineering, electrochemical engineering and new material development, leading to recent development of novel real-time probes (electronic nose technology, analysis of yeast morphology and metabolites, timely control of glucose feed), improved understanding of electro-fermentation (enhanced electronic transfer provision), as well as application of cost-effective and sustainable materials (bioreactor vessel manufactured from textile, and yeast immobilisation support matrix made from abundant natural biomass). To the best of our knowledge, the subject is reviewed for the first time in recent years. Furthermore, this review also constitutes a futuristic S. cerevisiae fermentation process based on the recent advancement discussed.

Abstract
To enhance the co-production of butanol and hydrogen by the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation of Clostridium beijerinckii, a novel cathodic electro-fermentation (CEF) system was constructed with neutral red (NR) as electron mediator. With the mediation of NR, production of butanol and hydrogen from glucose in the CEF system achieved 5.49 ± 0.28 g/L and 3.74 ± 0.16 L/L, 569.5% and 325.0% higher than that in the open circuit (OC) system, respectively. The butanol and hydrogen yield of 0.30 ± 0.02 g/g and 206.53 ± 8.20 mL/g was 172.7% and 71.4% higher than that in the OC system, respectively. The effective co-production of butanol and hydrogen in the NR-mediated CEF system was attributed to the cooperation of the introduced polarized electrode and the additional NR. With the control of the polarized electrode, a feasible ORP was available for the effective hydrogen production. And the additional NR had induced more carbon source and electrons to the synthesis of butanol.

Abstract
Electro-fermentation system (EFS) emerges its effectiveness on treating microalgae for biodiesel production, but much is unknown about biodegradation behaviors, biodiesel characteristics, and microbial community. Compared with conventional fermentation system (CFS), microbial electrolysis cell-based EFS (MEC-EFS) and microbial fuel cell-based EFS (MFC-EFS) were investigated for the performance while treating microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. Results indicated that MEC-EFS presented much higher first-order decomposition rate coefficients of carbohydrates and proteins (1.212/d and 0.951/d) than those of CFS (0.615/d and 0.794/d) and MFC-EFS (0.518/d and 0.415/d). Compared with MFC-EFS, MEC-EFS showed better electrochemical performance (2.17 A/m3vs. 0.95 A/m3). Moreover, MEC-EFS reached the highest extracted lipid to biomass ratio (43.3%), followed by MFC-EFS (32.3%) and CFS (27.7%). By strengthened microbial biohydrogenation, MEC-EFS and MFC-EFS had higher saturated fatty acids ratio (78.8% and 70.6%) than that of CFS (56.1%). For MEC-EFS, enriched Ruminococcus and Geobacter in anodic biofilm might contribute to favorable biohydrogenation and electrochemical performance.

Abstract
Bio-electrochemical system (BES) emerges as a versatile approach to handling environmental problems with the harvest of sustainable energy and value-added chemicals. To enhance the butyric acid production from rice straw, microbial fuel cell (MFC) and cathodic electro-fermentation (CEF) systems were constructed in this study. Inoculated with the same mixed culture, fermentative butyric acid production efficiency of the two BESs were evaluated with/without neutral red (NR) as electron mediator, respectively. It was found that the butyric acid fermentation efficiency in the MFC system was inefficient. While, the CEF system presented an evident positive effect on butyric acid production. The production and specific yield of butyric acid in the CEF system reached 5.54 g/L and 0.41 g/g, higher than that in the open circuit (OC) system by 17.37% and 28.13%, respectively. Mass percentage of butyric acid in the produced total volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was also increased from 44.74% to 52.76%. The addition of NR had no positive effect on the butyric acid production, due to the low contribution of electric current to the end-products. With the cathode potential of -0.80 V (vs Ag/AgCl), relative abundance of the butyric acid fermenting bacteria (Clostridium cluster IV and cluster XIVa) in the microbial mixture was increased from 20.25% in the OC system to 33.61% in the CEF system. This research work not only presents a novel method for enhancing butyric acid production by rice straw fermentation, but also aids an understanding of the fermentation mechanism in CEF systems.

In this study, the feasibility of free nitrous acid (FNA) pretreatment coupled with quorum sensing (QS) was investigated to enhance hydrogen recovery from waste activated sludge (WAS) via electro-fermentation (EF). 3-oxo-hexanoyl-homoserine lactone (3OC6-HSL), as the signal molecule, was only added in the first three cycles of sludge inoculation at the phase of microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) startup. Results showed that QS combined FNA (AHL-FMEC) enabled highest hydrogen yield and current (4.3 mg/g VSS and 4.5 mA), while that generated from sole FNA/QS treated WAS (FMEC/AHL-RMEC) were only 3.5/3.0 mg/g VSS and 1.5/1.5 mA, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra illustrated the effective conversion of organics in AHL-FMEC, the utilization efficiencies of proteins and carbohydrates achieved to 75.0% and 79.7%, respectively. Besides, the internal resistance decreased from 34.5 Ω (FMEC) to 22.9 Ω (AHL-RMEC), further to 18.0 Ω, indicating the promoted bioelectrochemical activity of electroactive bacteria (EAB) in AHL-FMEC. Correspondingly, both EAB (21.7%), e.g., Geobacter (9.3%) and Pseudomonas (3.2%) and anaerobic fermentation bacteria (AFB, 28.6%), e.g., Proteiniclasticum (14.2%) and Petrimonas (3.6%) enriched to peaks in AHL-FMEC. Moreover, molecular ecological network (MEN) analysis revealed the underling relationships among AFB, EAB and homo-acetogen in EF system, suggesting the possible cooperative QS has been constructed. The results obtained in this study may provide a new insight for efficient hydrogen recovery from electro-fermentation of WAS.

Abstract
Ethanol-type fermentation (ETF) is one of three fermentation types during the acidogenesis of the anaerobic biological treatment. Ethanoligenens, a representative genus of ETF, displays acidophilic, autoaggregative, and ethanol-H2 co-producing characteristics and facilitates subsequent methanogenesis. Here, the latest advances in the molecular mechanisms of the metabolic regulation of ethanol-H2 co-producing bacteria based on multi-omics studies were comprehensively reviewed. Comparative genomics demonstrated a low genetic similarity between Ethanoligenens and other hydrogen-producing genera. FeFe‑hydrogenases (FeFe-H2ases) and pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) played critical roles in the ethanol-H2 co-metabolic pathway of Ethanoligenens. Global transcriptome analysis revealed that highly expressed [FeFe]-H2ases and ferredoxins drove hydrogen production by Ethanoligenens at low pH conditions (4.0-4.5). Quantitative proteomic analysis also proved that this genus resists acetic acid-induced intracellular acidification through the up-regulated expression of pyrimidine metabolism related proteins. The autoaggregation of Ethanoligenen facilitated its granulation with acetate-oxidizing bacteria in co-culture systems and mitigated a fast pH drop, providing a new approach for solving a pH imbalance and improving hydrogen production. In-depth studies of the regulatory mechanism underlying ethanol-H2 co-production metabolism and the syntrophic interactions of ethanol-H2 co-producing Ethanoligenens with other microorganisms will provide insights into the improvement of bioenergy recovery in anaerobic biotechnology. The coupling of ETF with other biotechnologies, which based on the regulation of electron flow direction, syntrophic interaction, and metabolic flux, can be potential strategies to enhance the cascade recovery of energy and resources.

Abstract
Electro-fermentation (EF) is a promising technique to increase the performance of bioprocesses. Here, the effect of EF on the lipid production by the yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides is studied. First, an in silico analysis was performed to unveil possible lipid yield increase and metabolic shifts by EF. Subsequently, cathodic EF (CEF) and anodic EF (AEF) were experimentally tested at different pO2 levels. CEF enabled artificial lowering of the extracellular redox potential to less than -200 mV even under strictly aerobic conditions. CEF and AEF both positively affected lipid yield and productivity. Additional CEF cultivations with the redox mediator Neutral Red yielded an immense increase in the ratio of saturated fatty acids (from 37% to 50%). Overall, this work demonstrates that EF offers broad potential to improve microbial lipid production. In this context, the use of redox mediators might be of special future interest for the production of cocoa-butter equivalents.

Abstract
Electro-fermentation is used as an alternative to conventional anaerobic digestion to enhance system stability and methane production from food waste. In particular, the contributions of electrode materials and an electric current are analyzed separately. The results showed that the introduction of electrodes (conductive carbon brushes without applied voltage) rapidly decreased the average concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from 6617 mg/L to 174 mg/L quickly, accelerated stabilization of digestion system, and improved methane production by 13.5%. When low voltage was supplied, the VFAs concentration declined to 129 mg/L, and methane production increased by 26.3%. Electric current stimulated the growth of hydrogenotrophic methanogens, but acetotrophic Methanosaeta still made up 27.6-61.9% of archaeal community. Geobacter occurred at the cathode with a low abundance. The energy contained in incremental methane was 4.55 times the consumption of electric energy, indicating the enhanced methanogenesis was mainly attributed to the improved digestion environment.

Abstract
Carbon-rich waste materials (solid, liquid, or gaseous) are largely considered to be a burden on society due to the large capital and energy costs for their treatment and disposal. However, solid and liquid organic wastes have inherent energy and value, and similar as waste CO2 gas they can be reused to produce value-added chemicals and materials. There has been a paradigm shift towards developing a closed loop, biorefinery approach for the valorization of these wastes into value-added products, and such an approach enables a more carbon-efficient and circular economy. This review quantitatively analyzes the state-of-the-art of the emerging microbial electrochemical technology (MET) platform and provides critical perspectives on research advancement and technology development. The review offers side-by-side comparison between microbial electrosynthesis (MES) and electro-fermentation (EF) processes in terms of principles, key performance metrics, data analysis, and microorganisms. The study also summarizes all the processes and products that have been developed using MES and EF to date for organic waste and CO2 valorization. It finally identifies the technological and economic potentials and challenges on future system development.

Abstract
The stimulatory effect of conductive particles on anaerobic digestion has been demonstrated in recent years. However, it is yet to be determined whether and how conductive particles affect methanogenesis via electro-fermentation (electro-fermentation methanogenesis). In this study, it was demonstrated, for the first time, that conductive graphite boosted the methane production yield by 54.3% and increased the maximum methane production rate by 72.2% during electro-fermentation methanogenesis. Graphite significantly affected the composition of cathode biofilms, with more live and large aggregates being observed. Spectroelectrochemical analyses further showed that the kinds and intensities of biocatalytic active sites and redox groups on the cathode biofilms increased during graphite-assisted electro-fermentation methanogenesis. Particularly, c-type cytochromes, humic acid-like substances, and humic substances improved the long-range electron transport to methanogens such as Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina. The results have implications for the improvement of electro-fermentation process and the use of conductive materials for biofuel recovery.

Abstract
More and more microbes are discovered that are capable of extracellular electron transfer, a process in which they use external electrodes as electron donors or acceptors for metabolic reactions. This feature can be used to overcome cellular redox limitations and thus optimizing microbial production. The technologies, termed microbial electrosynthesis and electro-fermentation, have the potential to open novel bio-electro production platforms from sustainable energy and carbon sources. However, the performance of reported systems is currently limited by low electron transport rates between microbes and electrodes and our limited ability for targeted engineering of these systems due to remaining knowledge gaps about the underlying fundamental processes. Metabolic engineering offers many opportunities to optimize these processes, for instance by genetic engineering of pathways for electron transfer on the one hand and target product synthesis on the other hand. With this review, we summarize the status quo of knowledge and engineering attempts around chemical production in bio-electrochemical systems from a microbe perspective. Challenges associated with the introduction or enhancement of extracellular electron transfer capabilities into production hosts versus the engineering of target compound synthesis pathways in natural exoelectrogens are discussed. Recent advances of the research community in both directions are examined critically. Further, systems biology approaches, for instance using metabolic modelling, are examined for their potential to provide insight into fundamental processes and to identify targets for metabolic engineering.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) is an important platform chemical which can be produced biologically from glycerol. Klebsiella pneumoniae is an ideal biocatalyst for 3-HP because it can grow well on glycerol and naturally synthesize the essential coenzyme B12. On the other hand, if higher yields and titers of 3-HP are to be achieved, the sustained regeneration of NAD+ under anaerobic conditions, where coenzyme B12 is synthesized sustainably, is required. RESULTS In this study, recombinant K. pneumoniae L17 overexpressing aldehyde dehydrogenase (AldH) was developed and cultured in a bioelectrochemical system (BES) with the application of an electrical potential to the anode using a chronoamperometric method (+0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl). The BES operation resulted in 1.7-fold enhancement of 3-HP production compared to the control without the applied potential. The intracellular NADH/NAD+ ratio was significantly lower when the L17 cells were grown under an electric potential. The interaction between the electrode and overexpressed AldH was enhanced by electron shuttling mediated by HNQ (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone). CONCLUSIONS Enhanced 3-HP production by the BES was achieved using recombinant K. pneumoniae L17. The quinone-based electron transference between the electrode and L17 was investigated by respiratory uncoupler experiments. This study provides a novel strategy to control the intracellular redox states to enhance the yield and titer of 3-HP production as well as other bioconversion processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are building blocks for the chemical industry. Sustainable, biological production is constrained by production and recovery costs, including the need for intensive pH correction. Membrane electrolysis has been developed as an in situ extraction technology tailored to the direct recovery of VFA from fermentation while stabilizing acidogenesis without caustic addition. A current applied across an anion exchange membrane reduces the fermentation broth (catholyte, water reduction: H2O + e(-) → ½ H2 + OH(-)) and drives carboxylate ions into a clean, concentrated VFA stream (anolyte, water oxidation: H2O → 2e(-) + 2 H(+) + O2). RESULTS In this study, we fermented thin stillage to generate a mixed VFA extract without chemical pH control. Membrane electrolysis (0.1 A, 3.22 ± 0.60 V) extracted 28 ± 6 % of carboxylates generated per day (on a carbon basis) and completely replaced caustic control of pH, with no impact on the total carboxylate production amount or rate. Hydrogen generated from the applied current shifted the fermentation outcome from predominantly C2 and C3 VFA (64 ± 3 % of the total VFA present in the control) to majority of C4 to C6 (70 ± 12 % in the experiment), with identical proportions in the VFA acid extract. A strain related to Megasphaera elsdenii (maximum abundance of 57 %), a bacteria capable of producing mid-chain VFA at a high rate, was enriched by the applied current, alongside a stable community of Lactobacillus spp. (10 %), enabling chain elongation of VFA through lactic acid. A conversion of 30 ± 5 % VFA produced per sCOD fed (60 ± 10 % of the reactive fraction) was achieved, with a 50 ± 6 % reduction in suspended solids likely by electro-coagulation. CONCLUSIONS VFA can be extracted directly from a fermentation broth by membrane electrolysis. The electrolytic water reduction products are utilized in the fermentation: OH(-) is used for pH control without added chemicals, and H2 is metabolized by species such as Megasphaera elsdenii to produce greater value, more reduced VFA. Electro-fermentation displays promise for generating added value chemical co-products from biorefinery sidestreams and wastes.
