Barren ground depressions, natural H2 and orogenic gold deposits: Spatial link and geochemical model

A review of the localities in continental rocks where H₂-rich gases have been reported, showed that they are mainly located near orogenic gold deposits. Two types of geomorphological features known as markers of gas venting in sedimentary basins were also systematically observed near orogenic gold deposits on satellite images. They consist in both barren ground depressions and high densities of small (<20 m in diameter) circular- and comet-shaped white spots in 32 and 7 localities, respectively. Point pattern analysis revealed that the white spots are self-organized, and similar to previously described vegetation patterns associated with termite mounds and fairy circles. We proposed a geochemical model to account for this relationship between orogenic gold deposits, H₂ emanations and geomorphological features. Fe‑carbonates are ubiquitous mineral products associated with gold mineralization. They can further dissolve in the presence of aqueous fluid due to their high reactivity below 200 °C to produce magnetite and up to ∼1 mol H₂ per kg of rock along with ∼3 mol/kg CO₂. This process induces a solid volume decrease of 50 %. Therefore, we propose that Fe‑carbonate dissolution is (1) the primary source of H₂ in orogenic gold deposit areas, and (2) involved in the formation of the geomorphological structures reported here, providing a new framework to understand their seemingly complex formation. Ground depressions and white spots are possible tools for gold exploration. Actually, we identified four new areas where we suspect possible orogenic gold deposits. The association between H₂-rich gas and ground depressions was also made near other formations containing Fe‑carbonates such as iron formations and carbonatites. This suggests that H₂ production through Fe‑carbonate dissolution is not restricted to gold deposits. The global H₂ production in crustal rocks associated with Fe‑carbonate alteration is estimated to 3 × 10⁵ mol/yr.

Revisiting Theron's hypothesis on the origin of fairy circles after four decades: Euphorbias are not the cause

Background

The Euphorbia hypothesis on the origin of fairy circles (FCs) in Namibia dates back to 1979. It proposes that the remains of decaying shrubs would induce an allelopathic interaction with the grasses and thereby cause bare-soil FCs. Here, we investigated this hypothesis based on revisiting marked Euphorbias after four decades, comparing the typical size distribution of dead Euphorbia damarana and FCs, and analyzing the spatial patterns of Euphorbias and FCs within the same drone-mapped study plots in three regions of Namibia.

Results

We found four dead Euphorbias in the southern Giribes that were marked by G.K. Theron about 40 years ago. Those locations did not develop into FCs over this time span. However, for the four dead Euphorbias, we provide photographic evidence that grass tufts were growing at the metal pins of those decaying shrubs, agreeing with previous research findings that the soil taken from beneath dead E. damarana shrubs was stimulating rather than inhibiting the growth of grasses. In the Giribes, there were very large FCs that ranged in diameter from 13.0 to 19.1 m. By contrast, the measured dead E. damarana, including the largest plants that we could find, ranged in size only between 4.2 and 11.7 m. At Brandberg, we found particularly small FCs with diameters between 2.4 and 2.7 m but the dead E. damarana, including the smallest dead shrubs in the area, ranged in size between 4.1 and 7.2 m. Hence given these size mismatches, the decaying Euphorbias cannot induce such observed FCs in the two regions. Spatial patterns of E. damarana and FCs in the two regions Giribes and Brandberg, as well as of E. gummifera and FCs near Garub, showed a strong mismatch within the same habitat: in four out of five plots the patterns differed significantly. FCs were regularly distributed while Euphorbias were predominantly clustered.

Conclusions

We reject the Euphorbia hypothesis based on the fact that grass growth was not prevented under decaying shrubs, the size of dead Euphorbias cannot explain the size of observed FCs and the spatial distribution of Euphorbias cannot cause the specific pattern signature of FCs.

The allelopathic, adhesive, hydrophobic and toxic latex of Euphorbia species is the cause of fairy circles investigated at several locations in Namibia

Background

In this multidisciplinary study we present soil chemical, phytochemical and GIS spatial patterning evidence that fairy circles studied in three separate locations of Namibia may be caused by Euphorbia species.

Results

We show that matrix sand coated with E. damarana latex resulted in faster water-infiltration rates. GC-MS analyses revealed that soil from fairy circles and from under decomposing E. damarana plants are very similar in phytochemistry. E. damarana and E. gummifera extracts have a detrimental effect on bacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of Stipagrostis uniplumis and inhibit grass seed germination. Several compounds previously identified with antimicrobial and phytotoxic activity were also identified in E. gummifera. GIS analyses showed that perimeter sizes and spatial characteristics (Voronoi tessellations, distance to nearest neighbour ratio, pair correlation function and L-function) of fairy circles are similar to those of fairy circles co-occurring with E. damarana (northern Namibia), and with E. gummifera (southern Namibia). Historical aerial imagery showed that in a population of 406 E. gummifera plants, 134 were replaced by fairy circles over a 50-year period. And finally, by integrating rainfall, altitude and landcover in a GIS-based site suitability model, we predict where fairy circles should occur. The model largely agreed with the distribution of three Euphorbia species and resulted in the discovery of new locations of fairy circles, in the far southeast of Namibia and part of the Kalahari Desert of South Africa.

Conclusions

It is proposed that the allelopathic, adhesive, hydrophobic and toxic latex of E. damarana, E. gummifera, and possibly other species like E. gregaria, is the cause of the fairy circles of Namibia in the areas investigated and possibly in all other areas as well.
