Serological evidence of the infection of H7 virus and the co-infection of H7 and H9 viruses in farmed fur-bearing animals in eastern China

Avian influenza virus (AIV) usually infects wild birds and domestic poultry; however, this virus could be transmitted to mammals and humans. The previous studies reported that the farmed mink could be infected with the H5 AIV and H9 AIV, indicating that the farmed fur-bearing animals may be susceptible to AIV. Here, we report the serological evidence of infection of H7 AIV and co-infection of H7 and H9 AIV in healthy framed fur-bearing animals. We collected serum specimens from healthy farmed fur-bearing animals (farmed mink and farmed fox) and make an investigation of serological surveillance of clade 2.3.2 H5 AIV, clade 7.2 H5 AIV, clade 2.3.4.4 H5 AIV, H7 AIV, and H9 AIV. We did not find the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies against clade 2.3.2 H5 AIV, clade 7.2 H5 AIV, or clade 2.3.4.4 H5 AIV in the serum specimens of farmed fur-bearing animals. However, we found that both farmed mink and farmed fox possess HI antibodies against H7 AIV or H9 AIV; furthermore, we found that some serum specimens possess both anti-H7 AIV antibodies and anti-H9 AIV HI antibodies, suggesting that one farmed fur-bearing animal can be infected with two different subtype AIVs and may play an important role in the reassortment course of the novel avian influenza viruses. Taken together, our data suggested that the enhanced surveillance of AIV in farmed fur-bearing animals and humans or animals in close contact with them is needed.

The use of phoxim and bendiocarb for control of fleas in farmed mink (Mustela vison)

Background

Fleas (Ceratophyllus sciurorum) are common on farmed mink in Denmark. When present, the fleas have a negative impact on the health of the farmed mink and are of nuisance for farm staff. Severe infestations of fleas cause anemia, poor growth and may result in death of mink kits. Changed behavior of the dams is also observed. Further it has been demonstrated that the fleas are vectors of Aleutian disease virus. Flea control is based on use of a few insecticides and resistance has been reported against permethrin. There is thus a need for new flea control products. In this blinded, randomized clinical trial according to GCP standard, phoxim spray and bendiocarb powder for flea control on mink farms were investigated.

Results

Both the phoxim spray solution and bendiocarb powder were found to be efficient for the control of C. sciurorum fleas on farmed mink. Phoxim treatments reduced the number of fleas by 98.4% and the bendiocarb treatments reduced the number of fleas by 99.0% in the mink nest boxes when compared to counts in controls. No clinical signs were observed post treatment.

Conclusions

The study demonstrated that phoxim sprayed on the animals and the use of bendiocarb powder in the nest box material were highly efficient for the control of the C. sciurorum fleas on farmed mink. Both products were safe to use at the recommended dose rate. Both compounds are recommended to be integrated in a new farm management plan suggested here.

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is widespread in farmed mink (Neovison vison)

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) clonal complex (CC) 398 is widespread in the Danish pig production with around 90% of herds being positive. Since 2009, cases of CC398 LA-MRSA infections in Danish mink farmers have been observed. The objective of the study was to examine the presence of LA-MRSA in farmed mink. The investigation comprised three different sample types 1) clinical samples from carcasses submitted to the laboratory for diagnostic examination, 2) paws and pharyngeal swabs from healthy animals collected at pelting, and 3) feed samples from mink feed producers. In clinical samples, LA-MRSA was found in 34% of submissions and was most prevalent in samples from paws (33%) and pharynx (17%), followed by nasal and intestinal samples (each 13%), whereas it was never detected in perineal samples. LA-MRSA was found in healthy animals on 40% of the investigated farms, including paw samples (29%) and pharyngeal samples (16%). Twenty out of the 108 feed samples from feed producers were positive for LA-MRSA. The dominant spa-types were t034 and t011 associated to CC398, corresponding to the dominant spa-types detected in the Danish pig production, from which slaughter offal is used for mink feed. The spa-types, the high prevalence of LA-MRSA on paws and in pharynx, and its detection in feed samples, suggest feed as a possible source of LA-MRSA in mink.
