Vegetation-edaphic correlation and importance value index in himalayan 'ecotone' temperate conifer forest using the multivariate technique

Himalayan 'Ecotone' temperate conifer forest is the cradle of life for human survival and wildlife existence. In spite of the importance of these areas, they have not been studied in depth. This study aimed to quantify the floristic structure, important value index (IVI), topographic and edaphic variables between 2019 and 2020 utilizing circular quadrant method (10 m x 10 m). The upper-storey layer consisted of 17 tree species belongs to 12 families and 9 orders. Middle-storey shrubs comprised of 23 species representing 14 families and 12 orders. A total of 43 species of herbs, grasses, and ferns were identified from the ground-storey layer, representing 25 families and 21 orders. Upper-storey vegetation structure was dominated by Pinus roxburghii (22.45 %) and middle-storey by Dodonaea viscosa (7.69 %). However, the ground layer vegetation was diverse in species composition (43 species) and distribution. The floral vegetation structure was encompassing of three floral communities which were diverse in IVI, such as, in Piro-Aial (Group 2), Pinus roxburghii (54.46 x 15.94) had the highest IVI value, followed by Pinus wallichiana (45.21 x 14.85) in Piwa-Quin (Group 3) and Ailanthus altissima (22.84 x 19.25) in Aial-Qugal (Group 1). However, the IVI values for Aesculus indica, Celtis australis, and Quercus incana in Aial-Qugal (Group 1) were not determined due to low detection rate. Nevertheless, eleven of these species showed 0 IVI values in Piro-Aial (Group 2) and Piwa-Quin (Group 3). CCA ordination biplot illustrated the significant differences among floral communities and its distribution, which impacted by temperature, rainfall, soil pH, altitude, and topographic features. Ward's agglomerative clustering finding reflected 'Ecotone' temperate conifer forest is rich and diverse floristic structure.

Synthesis of dendritic cobalt with flower-like structure by a facile wet chemistry method as an excellent electromagnetic wave absorber

In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) floral dendritic cobalt (FDC) consisting of layered flakes was effectively synthesized using a facile wet chemistry method. The impact of the molar amount of NaOH on the microscopic morphology, magnetic characteristics, and electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties of the FDC magnetic materials was comprehensively investigated. The results revealed that the prepared FDC features primary, secondary, and multi-level branches, with the majority of secondary branches being parallel to one another. The dendrites grew closely towards the flower's center at one end, while the tips extend in various directions, forming a dendritic flower cluster. The optimal reflection loss (RL) of S3 at 9.3 GHz was -56.34 dB with a thickness of 1.89 mm, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < -10 dB) reached 6.0 GHz (12.0-18.0 GHz) at a thickness of 1.30 mm. Consequently, the FDC magnetic materials produced in this study presented a method for fabricating high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) materials.

Pollination adaptations of group-by-group stamen movement in a meadow plant with temporal floral closure

Floral sexual organ (stamen and pistil) movements are selective adaptations that have different functions in male-female reproduction and the evolution of flowering plants. However, the significance of stamen movements in the spatial-temporal function and separation of male and female organs has not been experimentally determined in species exhibiting floral temporal closure. The current study investigated the role of slow stamen (group-by-group) movement in male-female sexual function, and the effect of stamen movement on pollen removal, male-male and male-female interference, and mating patterns of Geranium pratense, a plant with temporal floral closure. This species uses stamen group-by-group movement and therefore anther-stigma spatial-temporal separation. Spatial separation (two whorls of stamen and pistil length) was shown to be stronger than temporal separation. We found that stamen movements to the center of the flower increase pollen removal, and the most common pollinators visited more frequently and for longer durations during the male floral stage than during the female floral stage. Petal movements increased both self-pollen deposition rate and sexual interference in G. pratense. The fruit and seed set of naturally and outcrossed pollinated flowers were more prolific than those of self-pollinated flowers. Group-by-group stamen movement, dehiscence of stamens, pistil movement, and male-female spatial-temporal functional separation of G. pratense before floral temporal closure may prevent male-female and stamen-stamen interference and pollen discounting, and may increase pollen removal and cross-pollination.

Upregulation of LINC-AP2 is negatively correlated with AP2 gene expression with Turnip crinkle virus infection in Arabidopsis thaliana

A long intergenic noncoding RNA LINC - AP2 is upregulated and negatively correlated with AP2 gene expression with Turnip crinkle virus infection in Arabidopsis. Plant vegetative growth and floral reproductive structure were severely retarded and distorted in Turnip crinkle virus (TCV)-infected Arabidopsis thaliana. Compared to mock-inoculated plants, the stamen filaments were shorter in flowers of TCV-infected plants. However, TCV-infected plants can still produce normal seeds through artificial pollination, indicating both its pollen and stigma were biologically functional. From our high-throughput RNA-Seq transcriptome analysis, a floral structure-related APETALA2 (AP2) gene was found to be downregulated and its neighboring long intergenic noncoding RNAs (lincRNA), At4NC069370 (named LINC-AP2 in this study), were upregulated significantly in TCV-infected plants. This LINC-AP2 was further confirmed for its existence using 5'RACE technology. LINC-AP2 overexpression (LINC-AP2 OE) transgenic Arabidopsis plants were generated to compare with TCV-infected WT plants. TCV-infected LINC-AP2 OE plants which contained lower AP2 gene expression displayed more severe symptoms (including floral structure distortion) and higher TCV-CP gene transcript and coat protein levels. Furthermore, compared to TCV-infected WT plants, TCV-infected ap2 mutant plants failed to open their flower buds and displayed more severe viral symptoms. In conclusion, upregulation of LINC-AP2 is negatively correlated with AP2 gene expression with TCV infection in Arabidopsis.
