Is it me or others who matter? The interplay between consumer values vis-à-vis status and affiliation motives as shapers of meat alternative interest

This study is about the role of consumers' personal values (Self-enhancement, Openness to change, Self-transcendence, and Conservation) in consumers' interest towards meat alternatives. In addition, the underlying role of two social motives, status and group affiliation are analysed. A conceptual model with hypotheses was developed and validated, and the hypotheses were tested through PLS-SEM with data from four European countries (Finland, the UK, Germany, and Sweden, total N = 3600). The results show that self-focused personal values (Self-enhancement and Openness to change) are not associated with consumers' interest towards meat alternatives. The case is different with other-focused values. Self-transcendence had a positive connection to interest while Conservation had a negative relationship. Finally, the data suggest an underlying role of social motive status between Self-enhancement and interest and the same for group affiliation between Self-transcendence and Conservation and interest. Based on the results, strategies to support meat alternative adoption such as value activation through priming, cognition and emotion-driven marketing are proposed.

Ambivalent attendees: Transitions in group affiliation among those who choose a 12-step alternative for addiction

BACKGROUND

Mutual-help alternatives for addiction are numerous, and research attests to the benefits of involvement in such alternatives. Yet, virtually nothing is known about affiliation patterns over time among 12-step alternatives. We investigated the patterns, correlates, and outcomes of transitions in affiliation (including changing groups and dropping out) within alternatives for alcohol problems.

METHODS

We analyzed data from the Peer ALternatives for Addiction (PAL) Study, a longitudinal study comparing the nature and effectiveness of 12-step groups, WFS, LifeRing, and SMART (N = 647). First, using all data, we compared affiliation patterns over time across 12-step and 12-step alternative members at baseline. Second, analyzing exclusively 12-step alternative members at baseline, we compared baseline characteristics and 6-month outcomes of those who changed and dropped out of (vs. retained) their primary groups at 6 months.

RESULTS

While drop-out rates were low, and similar, across groups, members of the alternatives were more likely (vs. 12-step) to change groups at 6 months, and transitioned predominantly to 12-step. Further, among the 12-step alternatives, both changing groups and dropping out was associated with lower group cohesion and satisfaction. Meanwhile, in multivariate analyses of 6-month outcomes, changing (vs. retaining) groups robustly predicted lower cohesion, higher negative affect, and lower quality of life, whereas dropping out was associated with lower odds of alcohol abstinence.

CONCLUSIONS

While dropping out is known to be risky, changing groups is more common among the 12-step alternatives, and connotes risk of future problems that may be partially explained by dissatisfaction with the new group (usually 12-step).

Group therapy for women with substance use disorders: In-session affiliation predicts women's substance use treatment outcomes

In-session affiliation among members is a hypothesized mechanism of action of group therapy for women with substance use disorders (SUDs). We evaluated group affiliation as an independent predictor of SUD treatment outcome in women (n = 100), 18 years or older diagnosed with substance dependence, who were randomized to the single-gender Women's Recovery Group (WRG) or mixed-gender group therapy (Group Drug Counseling; GDC). Affiliative statements made by members in both groups were measured for 39 women in each treatment arm. We studied the relationship between frequency of affiliative statements categorized in quintiles and the trajectory of days of any drug use during 3 months treatment and 6 months post-treatment using a Poisson regression model with estimation via generalized estimating equations. Furthermore, we investigated whether the effect of affiliation on substance use was moderated by group therapy type. The relationship between amount of affiliation and substance use reduction was non-linear. At the end of the treatment phase (3 months), women who experienced the highest level of affiliation (>65 affiliative statements on average) were found to reduce substance use by about 1.75 days more (p-value = 0.02) than women who experienced the lowest level of affiliation (<26). The effects of affiliation persisted 6 months post-treatment and were moderated by therapy group, whereby women enrolled in the single-gender WRG appeared to benefit more from affiliation post-treatment. Training therapists to facilitate verbal affiliation may provide added therapeutic benefit to group therapy for women with SUDs.
