Metal-injection and interface density engineering induced nickel diselenide with rapid kinetics for high-energy sodium storage

The key to the innovation of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is to find efficient sodium-storage electrode. Here, metal Mo doping of NiSe2 is proposed by modified electrospinning strategy followed by in situ conversion process. The Mo-NiSe2 anchoring on hollow carbon nanofibers (HCNFs) would make full use of the multi-channel HCNFs in the inner layer and the active sites of Mo-NiSe2 in the outer layer, which plays an important role in buffering the volume stress of Na+ (de)insertion and reducing the adsorption energy barrier of Na+. Innovatively, it is proposed to jointly regulate the SIBs performance of NiSe2 by both metal atom doping and interface effects, thereby adjusting the sodium ion adsorption barrier of NiSe2. The Mo-NiSe2@HCNFs exhibits remarkable performance in SIBs, demonstrating a high specific capacity of 396 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 1 A/g. Moreover, it maintains outstanding cycling stability, retaining 77.6 % of its capacity (211 mAh/g) even after 1000 cycles at 10 A/g. This comprehensive electrochemical performances are due to the structural stability and outstanding electronic conductance of the Mo-NiSe2@HCNFs, as evidenced by the diffusion analysis and ex situ charge-discharge process characterization. Furthermore, coupled with the Na3V2(PO4)2O2F cathodes, the full cell also achieves a high energy density of 123 Wh kg-1. The theoretical calculation of the hypervalent Mo doing further proves the benefit of its Na+ adsorption and denser conduction band distribution. This study provides a reference for the construction of transition metal selenide via doping and interface engineering in sodium storage.

Nitrogen-rich polycyclic pentazolate salts as promising energetic materials: theoretical investigating

Pentazolate (cyclo-N₅^-) salts are nitrogen-rich compounds with great development potential as energetic materials due to their full nitrogen anion. However, the densities of available N₅^- salts are generally low, which seriously lowers their performances. It is necessary to screen out cyclo-N₅^- salts with high density. To this end, eight new non-metallic cyclo-N₅^- salts based on fused heterocycle were designed. -NH₂, -NO₂, and -O^- groups were introduced into the compounds to adjust and improve the detonation performance and impact sensitivity of cyclo-N₅^- salts. By theoretical calculations and Hirshfeld surface analyses, the densities, heats of formation, detonation performance, sensitivities, and crystal structures of the title compounds were predicted, and the contribution of hydrogen bond as well as π-π stacking to the stability of cyclo-N₅^- salt was revealed. The results indicate that the densities of title compounds are higher than 1.85 g cm^‒3, and the sensitivities of these compounds are predicted to be lower than that of HMX. The detonation properties of a (D = 9.47 km s^-1, P = 41.21 GPa) and d (D = 9.44 km s^-1, P = 40.26 GPa) are better than those of HMX. These mean that using fused ring as a cation and introducing proper substituents are an effective method to improve cyclo-N₅^- salt's density and balance the detonation performance and sensitivity.

Boosting reaction kinetics and reversibility in Mott-Schottky VS2/MoS2 heterojunctions for enhanced lithium storage

Heterostructures have lately been recognized as a viable implement to achieve high-energy Li-ion batteries (LIBs) because the as-formed built-in electric field can greatly accelerate the charge transfer kinetics. Herein, we have constructed the Mott-Schottky heterostructured VS₂/MoS₂ hybrids with tailorable 1T/2H phase based on their matchable formation energy, which are made of metallic and few-layered VS₂ vertically grown on MoS₂ surface. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil that such heterojunctions drive the rearrangement of energy band with a facilitated reaction kinetics and enhance the Li adsorption energy more than twice compared to the MoS₂ surface. Furthermore, the VS₂ catalytically expedites the Li-S bond fracture and meantime the enriched Mo⁶⁺ enables the sulfur anchoring toward the oriented reaction with Li⁺ to form Li₂S, synergistically enhancing the reversibility of electrochemical redox. Consequently, the as-obtained VS₂/MoS₂ hybrids deliver a very large specific capacity of 1273 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 with 61% retention even at 5 A g^-1. It can also stabilize 100 cycles at 0.5 A g^-1 and 500 cycles at 1 A g^-1. The findings provide in-depth insights into engineering heterojunctions towards the enhancement of reaction kinetics and reversibility for LIBs.
