Bipolar Polymeric Protective Layer for Dendrite-Free and Corrosion-Resistant Lithium Metal Anode in Ethylene Carbonate Electrolyte

The unstable interface between Li metal and ethylene carbonate (EC)-based electrolytes triggers continuous side reactions and uncontrolled dendrite growth, significantly impacting the lifespan of Li metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, a bipolar polymeric protective layer (BPPL) is developed using cyanoethyl (-CH2CH2C≡N) and hydroxyl (-OH) polar groups, aiming to prevent EC-induced corrosion and facilitating rapid, uniform Li+ ion transport. Hydrogen-bonding interactions between -OH and EC facilitates the Li+ desolvation process and effectively traps free EC molecules, thereby eliminating parasitic reactions. Meanwhile, the -CH2CH2C≡N group anchors TFSI- anions through ion-dipole interactions, enhancing Li+ transport and eliminating concentration polarization, ultimately suppressing the growth of Li dendrite. This BPPL enabling Li|Li cell stable cycling over 750 cycles at 10 mA cm-2 for 2 mAh cm-2. The Li|LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 and Li|LiFePO4 full cells display superior electrochemical performance. The BPPL provides a practical strategy to enhanced stability and performance in LMBs application.

Mechanistic insights into the lignin dissolution behavior in amino acid based deep eutectic solvents

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) composed by amino acids (L-arginine, L-proline, L-alanine) as the hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and carboxylic acids (formic acid, acetic acid, lactic acid, levulinic acid) as hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) were prepared and used for the dissolution of dealkaline lignin (DAL). The mechanism of lignin dissolution in DESs was explored at molecular level by combining the analysis of Kamlet-Taft (K-T) solvatochromic parameters, FTIR spectrum and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of DESs. Firstly, it was found that the formation of new hydrogen bonds between lignin and DESs mainly drove the dissolution of lignin, which were accompanied by the erosion of hydrogen bond networks in both lignin and DESs. The nature of hydrogen bond network within DESs was fundamentally determined by the type and number of functional groups in both HBA and HBD, which affected its ability to form hydrogen bond with lignin. One hydroxyl group and carboxyl group in HBDs provided active protons, which facilitated proton-catalyzed cleavage of β-O-4, thus enhancing the dissolution of DESs. The superfluous functional group resulted in more extensive and stronger hydrogen bond network in the DESs, thus decreasing the lignin dissolving ability. Moreover, it was found that lignin solubility had a closed positive correlation with the subtraction value of α and β (net hydrogen donating ability) of DESs. Among all the investigated DESs, L-alanine/formic acid (1:3) with the strong hydrogen-bond donating ability (acidity), weak hydrogen-bond accepting ability (basicity) and small steric-hindrance effect showed the best lignin dissolving ability (23.99 wt%, 60 °C). On top of that, the value of α and β of L-proline/carboxylic acids DESs showed some positive correlation with the global electrostatic potential (ESP) maxima and minima of the corresponding DESs respectively, indicating the analysis of ESP quantitative distributions of DESs could be an effective tool for DESs screening and design for lignin dissolution as well as other applications.

Konjac glucomannan-dihydromyricetin complex improves viscosity and hydration capacity of konjac glucomannan as well as the thermal stability of dihydromyricetin

The nutritional benefits of soluble dietary fiber were mainly attributed to its viscosity and hydration capacity. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of the interaction between konjac glucomannan (KGM) and dihydromyricetin (DMY) on the viscosity and hydration capacity of KGM and the thermal stability of DMY. In contrary to most reports, the addition of DMY to KGM resulted in an increase of viscosity and hydration capacity determined via rheology and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy characterization. Meanwhile the prototype retention of DMY in the presence of heating condition at 60 °C and 100 °C were improved. The radical scavenging capacity of DMY under heating condition was improved at 100 °C via the quantification of ABTS⁺ and DPPH. KGM-DMY complex was a non-covalent compound connected by hydrogen bonds which was characterized with particle size analyses, zeta potential analyses, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and isothermal titration calorimetry. This study was beneficial to the development of polyphenol-enriched nutrition based on KGM, especially in the aspects of satiety, appetite regulation and glucose regulation.

Ultra-high resolution near-infrared spectrum by wavelet packet transform revealing the hydrogen bond interactions

Resolution is always an obstacle to analyzing the fine structure of a spectrum. The problem is particularly serious in the analysis of the near-infrared (NIR) spectra of aqueous solutions, because the spectrum is generally composed of overlapping broad peaks making the understanding of the structures and the interactions notoriously difficult. In this work, wavelet packet transform (WPT) was adopted to enhance the resolution of the NIR spectra of aqueous mixtures. Due to the microscopic ability of WPT in both position and frequency, the fine details of a spectrum can be observed in the spectral components of different frequencies obtained by WPT decomposition. Ultra-high resolution spectrum can be obtained from the high-frequency component representing the spectral features. Spectral features of different hydrogen-bonded OH, as well as the OH in HOH and HOD, were identified from the high-resolution NIR spectra of water and heavy water mixtures and validated by the variation of the spectral intensity with the mole ratio of H₂O and D₂O. The high-resolution spectrum was further applied in analyzing the interaction of amine and water. The spectral features of the hydrogen bonding between CH/NH in tert-butylamine (TBA) and OH in water were observed. The structures of CH bonded to one water molecule, and the structures of NH connecting with one and two water molecules were identified.

Regulation nature of water-choline amino acid ionic liquid mixtures on the disaggregation behavior of starch

Fully green and renewable choline amino acid (choline glycine, [Cho][Gly]) ionic liquid (IL) was firstly explored and evaluated as a solvent for starch. By a thorough investigation of microstructure evolution of water-[Cho][Gly] (w:IL) mixtures, its regulation mechanism on disaggregation behaviors of starch was revealed and illuminated. Compared with pure water, existed hydrated free ions in w:IL-9:1 and w:IL-7:3 restrict starch-water interactions to disaggregate of starch, thus hampering gelatinization of starch. While the gelatinization temperatures decreased at w:IL-5:5 and w:IL-4:6 mixtures with a result of homogeneous starch solutions. The tight and water-separated ion pairs existed at w:IL-5:5 and w:IL-4:6 mixtures allow adequate ions to interact with starch to facilitate the disaggregation of starch. At w:IL-2:8 and w:IL-0:10 mixtures, an exothermic dissolution of starch was observed at high temperatures as a result of predominant starch-ion interactions. These results provide the possibility of using [Cho][Gly] solvent to meet various application requirements of starch.

Dataset on the DFT-QSAR, and docking approaches for anticancer activities of 1, 2, 3-triazole-pyrimidine derivatives against human esophageal carcinoma (EC-109)

The investigation of the novel hybrid, 1, 2, 3-triazole moiety combined with pyrimidine derivatives against human esophageal carcinoma is an unexplored field of theoretical/computational chemistry. Also, the development of new drugs still remains a major challenge, cost-intensive and time-consuming, thus making the computational approach now a hot topic due to its ability to hasten up and aid the process of drug designs. Here, the use of the quantum chemical method via density functional theory (DFT) was employed in calculating molecular descriptors for developing the quantitative structure-activity relation (QSAR) model which predicts bioactivity of the selected 1, 2, 3-triazole-pyrimidine derivatives. Quantum chemical method implemented in Spartan 14, was used in calculating the molecular descriptors. The obtained results were imputed into Gretl and SPSS (software package for social sciences) to generate a novel QSAR model equation for human esophageal carcinoma (EC-109) through multiple linear regression. The relationship between the experimental and predicted inhibition efficiency (IC50) of 1,2,3-triazole-pyrimidine with EC-109 was calculated which gives good correlation results. QSAR was validated using CV.R2and R a 2 . Fitting value (R2) of 0.999 with an adjusted fitting value ( R a 2 ) of 0.995 was obtained and the result of validating QSAR performance gave CV.R2 and R a 2 value that is greater than 0.6, signifying its appropriateness and dependability. Molecular docking through simulation using Discovery Studio 4.1, Autodock Tool 1.5.6 and AutodockVina 1.1.2 was also carried out to calculate the free energy of ligand-receptor interactions as well as ligand conformation in the receptor-binding site. The results obtained revealed the presence of hydrogen bond interaction of the ligands with the amino acids residue in the binding sites of the receptor. Conformation of the ligands was essential property for binding ligand with the receptor. Critical examination and the correlations between the IC50 and binding energy showed the activeness of ligand conformation in the gouge of the receptor with binding energy greater than the 5-fluorouracil (5- Fu) that was used as the standard compound.

Developing cysteamine-modified SERS substrate for detection of acidic pigment with weak surface affinity

In this paper, we developed cysteamine-modified surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for detecting detect trace amount of acidic pigment that shows weak affinity with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). To realize sensitive and reproducible detection of pigment with weak affinity, the SERS substrate was prepared by attaching cysteamine (CA) to the Au NPs, the acidic pigment molecule could rapidly reached to the surface of Au NPs because of the formation of multi‑hydrogen-bond and electrostatic interaction between the pigment and CA molecule. The proposed method allowed us to detect five kinds of acidic pigment with a limit of 1.0 ppm, which is below the strictest safety limit. Compared with the previous methods, the advantages of the present substrate were its simple substrate preparation, high reproducibility and good universality. Furthermore, the reliable and enough accurate results had been obtained by using of the proposed substrates in the assay of trace pigment in real samples.

Design of inhibitors using a combinatorial library for HIV-Nef and human SH3 domain interaction

The HIV-1 Nef protein has the ability to down regulate important molecules at the immune synapse. These include class I and class II (Human Leukocyte Antigen) HLA on the Antigen Presenting Cells (APC). The receptors in these molecules consist of SH-3 domain and their interaction with the HIV-1 Nef is critical. Therefore, it is important to inhibit this HIV-Nef and human SH3 domain interaction. Thus, we used a combinatorial library to screen for molecules to inhibit this interaction. The exercise identified a group of top ranking compounds for further consideration.

A Combinatorial approach: To design inhibitory molecules on Hemagglutinin protein of H1N1 virus (Swine Flu)

The Hemagglutinin (HA) is a protein of influenza A virus. It is present on the surface of influenza A virus and it is a glycoprotein. The HA is identified as potential drug target. H1N1 thiazolides, proved to be a potent drug in the inhibition of H1N1 replication. It is also known as inhibitor of other strains of influenza A virus. Thiazolide drug represses viral HA's maturation at a level which exists just before the resistance from digestion of endoglycosidase-H and thereby it hampers, HA insertion in host membrane. Blocking the appropriate active site of hemagglutinin protein helps in the disease control. In the present work, we have generated diverse combinatorial library based ligands on known inhibitor thiazolides and they were used for virtual screening by Molegro virtual docker program. K-means clustering approach was used for finding new inhibitory molecules with more appropriate features. These resulted molecules are may be helpful in the treatment of swine flu and many other related diseases.
