Immunity testing against COVID-19 from blood by an IoT-enabled and AI-controlled multiplexed microfluidic platform

Developing herd immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is pivotal for changing the course of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, the uncertainty of vaccine-induced immunity development and inequitable distribution of vaccines hinders the global vaccination effort. Therefore, routine serodiagnosis and ensuring effective vaccination on a time-to-time basis are essential for developing sustainable immunity against SARS-CoV-2. Herein, an AI-driven multiplexed point-of-care testing (POCT) platform capable of utilizing a microfluidic lab-on-a-chip (LOC) device has been proposed for analyzing bodily fluid response against SARS-CoV-2. The developed platform has been successfully utilized for the quantification of SARS-CoV-2 S-protein, N-protein, IgM, and IgG from human blood samples with limits of detection (LODs) as low as 0.01, 0.02, 0.69, and 0.61 ng/mL respectively. Finally, a data-receptive web-based dashboard system has been developed and demonstrated to provide real-time, territory-specific analysis of herd immunity progress from the test results. Thus, the proposed platform could be an imperative tool for healthcare authorities to analyze and restrain ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks or similar pandemics in the future by ensuring effective immunization.

A Novel Expectation-Maximization-Based Blind Receiver for Low-Complexity Uplink STLC-NOMA Systems

In this paper, we revisit a two-user space-time line coded uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (STLC-NOMA) system for Internet-of-things (IoT) networks and propose a novel low-complexity STLC-NOMA system. The basic idea is that both IoT devices (stations: STAs) employ amplitude-shift keying (ASK) modulators and align their modulated symbols to in-phase and quadrature axes, respectively, before the STLC encoding. The phase distortion caused by wireless channels becomes compensated at the receiver side with the STLC, and thus each STA's signals are still aligned on their axes at the access point (AP) in the proposed uplink STLC-NOMA system. Then, the AP can decode the signals transmitted from STAs via a single-user maximum-likelihood (ML) detector with low-complexity, while the conventional uplink STLC-NOMA system exploits a multi-user joint ML detector with relatively high-complexity. We mathematically analyze the exact BER performance of the proposed uplink STLC-NOMA system. Furthermore, we propose a novel expectation-maximization (EM)-based blind energy estimation (BEE) algorithm to jointly estimate both transmit power and effective channel gain of each STA without the help of pilot signals at the AP. Somewhat interestingly, the proposed BEE algorithm works well even in short-packet transmission scenarios. It is worth noting that the proposed uplink STLC-NOMA architecture outperforms the conventional STLC-NOMA technique in terms of bit-error-rate (BER), especially with high-order modulation schemes, even though it requires lower computation complexity than the conventional technique at the receiver.

Methodology for integrating artificial intelligence in healthcare systems: learning from COVID-19 to prepare for Disease X

Artificial intelligence and edge devices have been used at an increased rate in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article we review the lessons learned from COVID-19 to postulate possible solutions for a Disease X event. The overall purpose of the study and the research problems investigated is the integration of artificial intelligence function in digital healthcare systems. The basic design of the study includes a systematic state-of-the-art review, followed by an evaluation of different approaches to managing global pandemics. The study design then engages with constructing a new methodology for integrating algorithms in healthcare systems, followed by analysis of the new methodology and a discussion. Action research is applied to review existing state of the art, and a qualitative case study method is used to analyse the knowledge acquired from the COVID-19 pandemic. Major trends found as a result of the study derive from the synthesis of COVID-19 knowledge, presenting new insights in the form of a conceptual methodology-that includes six phases for managing a future Disease X event, resulting with a summary map of various problems, solutions and expected results from integrating functional AI in healthcare systems.

Enterprise architecture breakthrough for telecommunications transformation: A reconciliation model to solve bankruptcy

Observations of communication service providers (CSPs) over the past five years have revealed that text services have reduced radically by around 75%, followed by voice services and the average revenue per user (ARPU). This condition signifies that telecommunications companies are being affected by digital disruption. A fundamental analysis of current business processes is thus necessary for future telecommunications success. In the area of corporate strategic management, studies on conversion of the Internet of Things (IoT)-based industry as a new customer are gaining popularity. This research analyzes the breakthrough operational activities through a customer-centric approach as well as end-to-end CSP business activities towards a new customer reconciliation model. The customer-centric activities address problem to solution and complaint to solution. In the future, CSPs are expected to have large numbers of newly registered customers from IoT-based industries. The strategic mechanism for transforming leaps from old business processes into new ones is a novel research subject using the business process management (BPM) method. Business process analysis has been facilitated by the Internationa Telecommunication Union (ITU) telecommunications standards body developed by TMForum as the global telecommunications industry association. This transformation involves development of organizational structure, business activities, technical specifications, information and communication flow, and operational schemes, modeled under the enterprise architecture strategic notation, whose result is a breakthrough enterprise architecture design for future telecommunications companies. The design contributes to strategic management knowledge on how collaboration between the telecommunications industry and other IoT-based industries is determined for real operations. This research presents a transformation scheme that can solve the potential problem of bankruptcy in the telecommunications industry through a case study of a smart city in the IoT-based industry.

A Novel Certificateless Signature Scheme for Smart Objects in the Internet-of-Things

Rapid advances in wireless communications and pervasive computing technologies have resulted in increasing interest and popularity of Internet-of-Things (IoT) architecture, ubiquitously providing intelligence and convenience to our daily life. In IoT-based network environments, smart objects are embedded everywhere as ubiquitous things connected in a pervasive manner. Ensuring security for interactions between these smart things is significantly more important, and a topic of ongoing interest. In this paper, we present a certificateless signature scheme for smart objects in IoT-based pervasive computing environments. We evaluate the utility of the proposed scheme in IoT-oriented testbeds, i.e., Arduino Uno and Raspberry PI 2. Experiment results present the practicability of the proposed scheme. Moreover, we revisit the scheme of Wang et al. (2015) and revealed that a malicious super type I adversary can easily forge a legitimate signature to cheat any receiver as he/she wishes in the scheme. The superiority of the proposed certificateless signature scheme over relevant studies is demonstrated in terms of the summarized security and performance comparisons.
