Abstract
Background Shift work is a potential risk factor for women's reproductive health. Evidence suggests that shift work is associated with menstrual disorders, reproductive disturbances, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, previous studies did not systematically examine the results of menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea, and early menopause at the same time. Objective To determine the relationship between shift work and women's menstrual characteristics (e.g., irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, and early menopause). Methods Four databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science) were searched up to December 2022. The study characteristics and risk assessment values of the literature were extracted from 21 studies that met the criteria. Odds ratios (ORs), relative risks (RRs), hazard ratios (HRs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess the relationship between shift work exposure and menstruation. The included studies were evaluated for heterogeneity, publication bias, sensitivity analysis, and subgroup analysis. Results A total of 21 studies with 195,538 female participants, including 16 cross-sectional studies and 5 cohort studies, were included in this meta-analysis. According to the quality evaluation, the included research had high methodological quality. The overall ORs of shift work for the likelihood of irregular menstruation and dysmenorrhea were 1.30 (95% CI, 1.23-1.36) (I2 = 41.9%, P < 0.05) and 1.35 (95% CI, 1.04-1.75) (I2 = 73.0%, P < 0.05), respectively. There was a significant positive association between shift work and the risk of early menopause (HR = 1.09, 95% CI, 1.04-1.14), without significant heterogeneity (I2 = 0.0%, P > 0.05). Conclusions This meta-analysis indicated that shift workers have significantly higher odds of menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhea, and early menopause. This study focuses on female reproductive health and has broad implications for adjusting optimal working hours and shift schedules for female workers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Irregular menstruation is clinically associated with an increased risk for ovarian cancer and disease-related mortality. This relationship remains poorly understood, and a mechanism explaining it has yet to be described. METHODS Ovarian tissues from women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and regular menstruation (n = 10) or irregular menstruation (n = 10) were subjected to DNA methylation sequencing, real-time PCR array, whole-exome sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis. RESULTS We demonstrated that ovarian tissue from PCOS patients with irregular menstruation displayed global DNA hypomethylation, as well as hypomethylation at several functionally and oncologically significant regions. Furthermore, we showed that several cancer-related genes were aberrantly expressed in ovarian tissue from patients with irregular menstruation, and that their mRNA and microRNA profiles shared appreciable levels of coincidence with those from ovarian cancer tissue. We identified multiple point mutations in both the BRCA1 and MLH1 genes in patients with irregular menstruation, and predicted the potential pathogenicity of these mutations using bioinformatics analyses. CONCLUSIONS Due to the nature of ovarian cancer, it is important to broaden our understanding of the pathogenesis and risk factors of the disease. Herein, we provide the first description of a genetic and epigenetic basis for the clinical relationship between irregular menstruation and an increased risk for ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Background Limited evidences were reported about the risk of pre-pregnancy hair dye use or irregular menstruation with abnormal birth weight during pregnancy, and their joint effects were also unknown. The aim of our study was to explore whether the pre-pregnancy exposure of hair dye and irregular menstruation were associated with the risk of abnormal birth weight. Methods We conducted a nested case-control study from a prospective cohort of 6203 pregnant women. Low birth weight study included 315 mother-infant pairs (105 LBW cases and 210 matched controls), and macrosomia study included 381 mother-infant pairs (127 macrosomia cases and 254 matched controls). Meanwhile, lifestyle information including hair dying custom and menstrual history were collected by face-to-face questionnaires and birth outcomes were extracted from the medical records. The logistic regressions models were used to analyze the join effect of irregular menstruation and hair dye use. Results Pre-pregnancy hair dye use was associated with increased risk of LBW (adjusted OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.01–2.92, P = 0.048). Irregular menstruation had high risk of LBW (adjusted OR = 2.79, 95% CI: 1.53–5.09, P = 0.001) and macrosomia (adjusted OR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.09–3.44, P = 0.023). Additionally, in the LBW study, women who used hair dye with pre-pregnancy BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 had higher OR than those with only one risk factor (3.07 vs 2.53, Ptrend = 0.015), and women with both hair dye use and irregular menstruation also had higher risk than those with only one factor (4.53 vs 2.07, Ptrend = 0.05). Moreover, in macrosomia study, women with irregular menstruation and pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 had higher risk than those with one factor (13.31 vs 2.09, Ptrend = 0.001). Conclusion Our study showed that either pre-pregnancy hair dye use or irregular menstruation was associated with abnormal birth weight, especially, their joint effects could furthermore increase the risk of low birth weight infants when these two factors existed simultaneously.

Abstract
Background A regular menstrual cycle is an important indicator of a healthy reproductive system. Previous studies reported obesity, stress, and smoking as the factors that are associated with irregular menstruation and early menopause. However, the integrative effects of these modifiable risk factors have not been fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the modifiable risk factors of menstrual cycle irregularity and premature menopause, as well as their individual and combined effects among adult women in Korea. Method This study selected adult women aged 19 years and above who had been included in the 2007–2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We used a separate dataset to analyze the risk factors of menstrual cycle irregularity and menopause (pre- and postmenopausal women: n = 4788 and n = 10,697, respectively). Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the effects of smoking, drinking, obesity, and perceived level of stress on the menstrual cycle and menopause. Both logit and linear models were used in the analyses of the association between smoking and menopausal age. Equivalized household income, marital status, and educational level were considered as covariates. The modifiable risk factor scores were also calculated to integrate the effect of smoking, drinking, and obesity in the analysis. Result Results showed that smoking status, pack-year, obesity, and perceived level of stress were significantly associated with irregular menstruation among premenopausal women. Especially, women demonstrating > 3 modifiable risk factor scores had 1.7 times higher risk of having irregular menstruation than those who had a 0 score. Meanwhile, early initiation of smoking (≤19 years) and high pack-year (≥5) were also significantly associated with premature menopause among postmenopausal women. Conclusion This study demonstrated that modifiable risk factors, such as smoking, obesity, and stress, were significantly associated with menstrual cycle irregularity. Lifetime smoking was also correlated with early menopause. Our results suggested that healthier lifestyle practices, including, cessation of smoking, weight control, and stress management, were important factors in improving the reproductive health of women throughout life.
