Synthesis and application of recyclable magnetic cellulose nanocrystals for effective demulsification of water in crude oil emulsions

The development of eco-friendly, efficient, and economical demulsifiers for the demulsification of water in crude oil emulsion is one of the important issues in the petroleum industry. Demulsifiers with suitable performance in several demulsification methods are good choices for effective and economical demulsification. In this study, recyclable magnetic cellulose nanocrystals have been synthesized from cotton by a simple method and used in the demulsification of water in crude oil emulsions. Chemical and magnetic demulsification by magnetic cellulose nanocrystals has been investigated. In addition, the effects of time, temperature, and demulsifier concentration on the demulsification efficiency have been evaluated. According to the results, this demulsifier can be used as an effective demulsifier for both chemical and magnetic demulsification and displayed a demulsification efficiency of 100 % at 50 °C without a magnet and 90 % at 20 °C with a magnet. The chemical demulsification efficiency of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was investigated and it showed lower DE compared to magnetic cellulose nanocrystals. The recyclability tests of the demulsifier indicated that magnetic cellulose nanocrystals can be used up to 4 times. Finally, the demulsification mechanism and interfacial tension measurements revealed that this demulsifier reduced the interfacial tension between water and crude oil and increased the water droplet sizes.

A self-healing magneto-responsive nanocellulose ferrogel and flexible soft strain sensor

Crosslinks are the building blocks of hydrogels and play an important role in their overall properties. They may either be reversible and dynamic allowing for autonomous self-healing properties, or permanent and static resulting in robustness and mechanical strength. Hence, a combination of crosslinks is often required to engineer the 3D network of hydrogels with both autonomous self-healing and required robustness for strain sensing application; however, this complicates the fabrication of such hydrogels. The facile, yet versatile, approach used in this study is to forgo the use of extra crosslinks and instead rely solely on the properties of magnetic nanocellulose to fabricate a tough, stretchy, yet magneto-responsive, ionic conductive ferrogel for strain sensing. The ferrogel also gives stimuli-free and autonomous self-healing capacity, as well as the ability to monitor real-time strain under external magnetic actuation. The ferrogel also functions as a touch-screen pen. Based on our findings, this study has the potential to advance the rational design of multifunctional hydrogels, with applications in soft and flexible strain sensors, health monitoring and soft robotics.

Magnetic nanocellulose from Cyperus rotundas grass in the absorptive removal of rare earth element cerium (III): Toxicity studies and interpretation

In this study a very common grass named Cyperus rotundas was used to extract cellulose which was converted to magnetic grass nano cellulose (MGNC) to adsorb rare earth element Cerium (Ce (III)). The prepared MGNC was analyzed with sophisticated technique to determine the alteration in physical and chemical properties before and after adsorption with the pollutant Cerium. Parameters like pH, temperature, MGNC dosage and initial concentration of Ce were optimized to check parameters influencing the adsorption of Ce (III). The optimized experimental data were perfectly modelled into Langmuir model with adsorption capacity of 353.04 mg g ^-1 for Ce (III). For kinetics the data fitted into pseudo second order model. To check the efficacy of MGNC in real scenario, untreated and treated Ce was used for phototoxicity studies with 4 different plant seeds. Apart from this, model fish, Danio rerio was used to check the toxicity level on aquatic organism before and after adsorption of Ce (III) with MGNC. This study showed the efficient use of MGNC and maximum removal of Cerium from wastewater and the magnetic behavior incorporated adds advantage of easy retrieval.

Magnetic nanocellulose from olive industry solid waste for the effective removal of methylene blue from wastewater

The work shown in this article demonstrate a novel example of converting olive industry solid waste (OISW) into a magnetic cellulose nanocrystalline (MNCs) to serve as selective magnetic sorbents for methylene blue. Olive industry solid waste contains about 40% cellulose. The cellulose was extracted in a powder form from olive industry solid waste by subjecting it to a multistep pulping and bleaching process. The extracted powder cellulose was then converted to nanocrystalline cellulose (NCs) by acid hydrolysis. The NCs were then treated with a solution of FeCl₃.6H₂O, FeSO₄, and H₂O by a colloidal suspension method which produced free-flowing porous MNCs. The produced MNCs are characterized by several spectroscopic and analytical techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR VSM, and TGA. The efficiency of the three polymers cellulose powder, NCs, and MNCs toward extracting methylene blue (MB) from water was evaluated. Cellulose powder and NCs showed acceptable tendency for methylene blue. However, MNCs showed excellent extraction efficiency toward MB. The thermodynamic studies revealed a spontaneous adsorption of MB by MNCs at various temperatures. The spontaneous adsorption could be attributed to the electrostatic interaction and H-bonding between MNCs and MB. However, the interaction between cellulose, NCs, and MB is limited to the H-bonding.
