A source and ground motion study of earthquakes in and near Delhi (the National Capital Region), India

We study source parameters of 10 local earthquakes (2.7 ≤  M w ≤ 4.5) that have occurred in the National Capital Region (NCR) since 2001 and the ground motions produced by these events. Moment rate spectra of the earthquakes retrieved from the recordings at hard sites after applying corrections for geometrical spreading (1/R, R ≤ 100 km), anelastic attenuation (Q = 253f ^0.8) and cutoff frequency (f _m = 35 Hz) are reasonably well fit by the Brune ω ²-source model with stress drop ranging between 0.9 and 13 MPa. Neglecting the outlier low-stress drop value, the average stress drop is 6 MPa. We apply a modified standard spectral ratio technique to estimate site effect at 38 soft sites in the NCR as well as the geometrical mean site effect with respect to a reference hard site. Application of the stochastic method, with source characterized by the Brune ω ²- model with stress drop of 6 MPa and the mean site effect for soft sites, yields peak horizontal ground acceleration and velocity curves that are in good agreement with the observed values. These results provide the parameters needed for the application of the stochastic method to predict ground motions at hard and soft sites in the NCR during postulated M w ≤ 5.5 earthquakes.

Socio-demographic profile of suicidal hanging deaths in Delhi and the National Capital Region - a retrospective study

The aim of this retrospective socio-demographic analysis is to identify those at higher risk of suicidal hanging in the region of Delhi and the National Capital Region. All deaths due to suicidal hanging from January 2016 to December 2019 reported in the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital were included. Suicidal hanging accounted for 2.67% of total autopsied cases; 21-30 years old represented 42.62% of the victims. Male:female ratio was 1.7:1 and 38.37% of cases were from the adjoining areas of Vasant Kunj and Vasant Vihar. Therefore, a preventive strategy should focus concern on young adults, the male sex, and areas of Vasant Kunj and Vasant Vihar.

Influence of Qualification and Practice Settings of Dental Practitioners on Antimicrobial Prescribing in Delhi and National Capital Region, India

Background and Objectives:

Inappropriate antimicrobial prescribing is highly reported in dentistry. The objective of the study was to see the effect of dental qualification and practice settings on antimicrobial prescribing practices among dental practitioners in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) of India.

Materials and Methods:

A self-designed and pretested questionnaire was given to 667 dental practitioners holding degrees of graduation, postgraduation, and those pursuing postgraduation, working in academic institutions and private clinics in NCR of India. Data were analyzed using statistical software Stata version 12.0. Chi-square and logistic regression tests were used for analysis.

Results:

Out of total 539 responded, 66.4% of the practitioners prescribed by brand name and 27.8% by generic name. Amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (27.4%) was the first choice. Only 26% of the practitioners asked for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Space infections (91.9%), impacted third molar extractions (89.7%), and periodontal abscess (88.1%) were the conditions where antimicrobials were most frequently prescribed. However, 60.9% and 53.3% of the practitioners also prescribed antimicrobials for acute pulpitis and dry socket, respectively. For prophylaxis in medical conditions, amoxicillin was the first choice. In case of history of allergy to penicillin, 52.3% of the practitioners prescribe erythromycin whereas 14.6% prescribe amoxicillin. The adverse drug reporting culture was negligible, and only 14.3% of the practitioners were aware of the Pharmacovigilance Program of India. Level of qualification had a significant effect on prescribing (P < 0.05).

Interpretation and Conclusion:

Frequent irrational prescribing of antimicrobials used in odontogenic conditions warrants an urgent and continued need for guidelines as well as educational intervention programs in dentistry. This will improve the quality of antimicrobial prescribing practices in dentistry.

Musculoskeletal pain and its associated risk factors in residents of National Capital Region

Background:

Musculoskeletal (MS) pain is responsible for poor quality of life and decreased productivity. Objective information about the burden of musculoskeletal disorders among the general community in India is scanty, and the few reports that exist are based on a small sample size.

Materials and Methods:

This paper examines the issue of MS pain and its associated risk factors in a cross-sectional study of 2086 subjects from National Capital Region (NCR).

Results:

Overall prevalence of MS pain was found to be 25.9%. Pain was found to be more frequent among females (31.3%) as compared with males (20.9%). Significant association of pain in joints/limbs/knee/lower legs with obesity (OR = 2.1, P < 0.001) and high body fat (OR = 2.2, P < 0.001) was established. More than 50% of the subjects complained of backache.

Conclusions:

Our findings confirm that MS pain is a significant burden of disease among the residents of NCR. Women and subjects doing heavy work load, like agriculture and dairy farming, constitute the chief demographic groups. It is high time that a policy is framed to reduce this load of sickness.
