The Z-scheme NH2-UiO-66/PTCDA composite for enhanced photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction under low-power LED visible light

Series Z-scheme NH₂-UiO-66/PTCDA (NU100PX) composites constructed from NH₂-UiO-66 and PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride) were obtained by simple ball-milling method. The photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction activities of the NU100PX composites were conducted upon the irradiation of low power LED visible light. The results revealed that the introduction of a small amount of PTCDA on the surface of NH₂-UiO-66 could broaden the light absorption range and boost the separation of photo-induced charge carriers to promote the photocatalysis efficiency. The influence factors toward photocatalytic Cr(VI) cleanup performances of NU100P10 like pH, initial Cr(VI) concentrations, the impacts of small organic acids as hole capture agents along with various co-existing foreign matters were clarified. After 5 runs' adsorption-photoreduction towards Cr(VI), the NU100P10 still exhibited superior reduction activity and reusability. The Z-scheme mechanism of photocatalytic Cr(VI) removal over NU100P10 was put forward and certificated by electrochemical experiment, ESR (electron spin resonance) test, XPS determination, photo-deposition and DFT (density functional theory) calculation.

Performance of EDTA modified magnetic ZnFe2O4 during photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution under UV irradiation

The photocatalytic reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to non-pernicious Cr(III) using ZnFe₂O₄/EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) under UV irradiation was evaluated. The reduction of Cr(VI) with bare ZnFe₂O₄ under UV irradiation was negligible. However, the Cr(VI) in the solution was completely reduced within 3 h after the introduction of EDTA. EDTA could consume valence band holes and could be oxidized by holes into inorganic products. Therefore, photo-generated electrons could be used to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The effect of concentration of EDTA, ZnFe₂O₄ photocatalyst dosages, and initial pH on the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) was investigated. The results revealed that the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) accelerated by increasing EDTA concentration and ZnFe₂O₄ dosage. The present reduction process confirms the pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction. The quasi reduction rate constant increased from 3.5 x 10^-4min^-1 to 2.6 x 10^-2min^-1 with the increase in initial EDTA concentration from 0 to 1000 mg L^-1. The acidic solution is preferable for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). The entire reduction of Cr(VI) was carried out within 2 h under the optimum conditions with pH 2, 20 mg ZnFe₂O₄, and 500 mg L^-1 EDTA. The formation of [Cr-EDTA]³⁺ complex may be advantageous to accelerate the Cr(VI) reduction. A probable mechanism for the photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction was speculated here.

Facile synthesis of hierarchically nanostructured bismuth vanadate: An efficient photocatalyst for degradation and detection of hexavalent chromium

Heterostructured nanomaterials can paid more significant attention in environmental safety for the detection and degradation/removal of hazardous toxic chemicals over a decay. Here, we report the preparation of hierarchically nanostructured shuriken like bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) as a bifunctional catalyst for photocatalytic degradation and electrochemical detection of highly toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) using the green deep eutectic solvent reline, which allows morphology control in one of the less energy-intensive routes. The SEM results showed a good dispersion of BiVO₄ catalyst and the HR-TEM revealed an average particle size of ca. 5-10 nm. As a result, the BiVO₄ exhibited good photocatalytic activity under UV-light about 95% reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was observed in 160 min. The recyclability of BiVO₄ catalyst exhibited an appreciable reusability and stability of the catalyst towards the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). Also, the BiVO₄-modified screen printed carbon electrode (BiVO₄/SPCE) displayed an excellent electrochemical performance towards the electrochemical detection of Cr(VI). Besides, the BiVO₄/SPCE demonstrated tremendous electrocatalytic activity, lower linear range (0.01-264.5 μM), detection limit (0.0035 μM) and good storage stability towards the detection of Cr(VI). Importantly, the BiVO₄ modified electrode was also found to be a good recovery in water samples for practical applications.
