Analysis of photocatalytic degradation of polyamide microplastics in metal salt solution by high resolution mass spectrometry

Microplastic pollution has become one of the most concerned focuses in the world. Among many treatment methods, photocatalysis is considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly methods. In this work, the photodegradation behavior of polyamide microplastics is studied by using polyamide 6 PA6) as model microplastics and FeCl3 as catalyst. It is hoped that the PA6 fiber can be effectively degraded by utilizing the strong oxidizing active species that can be produced after FeCl3 is irradiated in water. The results shows that PA6 fiber can be almost completely degraded after 10 days of irradiation in FeCl3 aqueous solution, indicating that it is promising to use this new method to solve the problem of PA6 type microplastics. In addition, the chain scission mechanism and degradation process of PA6 are analyzed in detail by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), which provides a new insight for the study of polymer degradation mechanism.

A novel phosphorus-nitrogen-based hyperbranched polysiloxane for improving the fire safety of PA6 with suppressed melt droplets and good mechanical properties

The combustible defects of polyamide 6 (PA6), especially the flammable melt-dripping behavior, have greatly limited its application in some particular fields. In this work, a halogen-free hyperbranched polysiloxane (PBDSi) containing DOPO and Schiff base was designed via Michael's addition reaction and dehydration-condensation reaction. Results showed that the char yield (Yc) of PBDSi attained 37.9 wt%, confirming the satisfactory charring behavior of PBDSi for preparing flame-retardant PA6. Just by adding 3 wt% of PBDSi, the serious melt droplets of PA6 were suppressed effectively. The prepared PA6/PBDSi-3 with 5 wt% of PBDSi could achieve the highest value of limited oxygen index (LOI) of 27.2 %, while that of PA6 is 21.0 %. Meanwhile, PA6/PBDSi-3 obtained an apparent reduction in the peak heat release rate (PHRR) value of 31.1 % compared with pure PA6. The cooperated effect of DOPO, Schiff base, and polysiloxane that contributed to generating a silicon-phosphorous-rich char layer and releasing incombustible volatiles that were determined to be the essential factor for the improved fire safety of PA6/PBDSi were explored intensively. Inspiringly, PA6/PBDSi composites exhibited a slight mechanical loss concerning PA6, overcoming the great challenge of developing additive flame-retardant materials to balance mechanical properties and fire safety.

Development of an antibacterial and antioxidative nanofibrous membrane using curcumin-loaded halloysite nanotubes for smart wound healing: In vitro and in vivo studies

Endowing wound dressings with drug delivery capability is a suitable strategy to transfer medicinal compounds locally to damaged skin layers. These dressings are especially useful for accelerating the healing rate in the cases of long-term treatment, and adding more functionalities to the platform. In this study, a wound dressing composed of polyamide 6, hyaluronic acid, and curcumin-loaded halloysite nanotubes (PA6/HA/HNT@Cur) was designed and fabricated for wound healing applications. The physicochemical properties of this platform were investigated through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, wettability, tensile strength, swelling, and in vitro degradation were assessed. The HNT@Cur was incorporated in the fibers in three concentrations and 1 wt% was found as the optimum concentration yielding desirable structural and mechanical properties. The loading efficiency of Cur on HNT was calculated to be 43 ± 1.8%, and the release profiles and kinetics of nanocomposite were investigated at physiological and acidic pH. In vitro antibacterial and antioxidation studies showed that the PA6/HA/HNT@Cur mat had strong antibacterial and antioxidation activities against gram-positive and -negative pathogens and reactive oxygen species, respectively. Desirable cell compatibility of the mat was found through MTT assay against L292 cells up to 72 h. Finally, the efficacy of the designed wound dressing was evaluated in vivo; after 14 days, the results indicated that the wound size treated with the nanocomposite mat significantly decreased compared to the control sample. This study proposed a swift and straightforward method for developing materials that might be utilized as wound dressings in clinical settings.

Determination of trace potassium permanganate in tap water by solid phase extraction combined with spectrophotometry

A simple solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled with spectrophotometric method was developed for determination of trace permanganate (MnO₄ ^-) in water. Commercial reagent polyamined-6 powder was used as SPE stationary phase to retain MnO₄ ^- which is based on the fact that MnO₄ ^- can be adsorbed on polyamide 6 (PA-6) sorbent as water samples flow through the SPE cartridge. 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) were used both as eluent solution and chromogenic agent to convert the adsorbed MnO₄ ^- into Mn²⁺ and generate blue oxidized product with high molar absorptivity. Quantification of MnO₄ ^- could be obtained by spectrophotometric detection of the resulting solution flow out of the SPE cartridge. The extraction and detection variables was optimized to maximize the absorbance of the TMB oxidized product. Under optimized conditions, this method provided linear dynamic ranges of 0.01-1 μmol L^-1 for MnO₄ ^- with preconcentration of 100 mL water sample. The limits of detection (3S_b/m) of this method in deionized water were calculated to be 5.1 nM, and the relative standard deviations were determined to be 3.2% (C = 0.1 μmol L^-1, n = 5). This method has been applied to the determination of MnO₄ ^- in spiked tap waters and satisfactory recovery was obtained.

Enhancing the flame retardancy and UV resistance of polyamide 6 by introducing ternary supramolecular aggregates

An integrated multi-functional additive was fabricated by successively grafting melamine (MEL) and phytic acid (PhA) on multiwalled carbon-nanotubes (MWNCTs), and was then applied in PA6 to improve the flame retardancy and light aging resistance of the composite. The limit oxygen index of PA6 composite containing 7 wt% PhA-MEL-MWCNTs was increased to 26.4 from 21.0. The smoke and CO release were significantly reduced by 48% and 88% respectively, and the severe melt dripping of PA6 in burning was eliminated. It is proved that PhA-MEL-MWCNTs can absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and hence significantly reduces the mechanical property loss of the PA6 composite after UV aging. The tensile strength of the aged PA6/7 wt%PhA-MEL-MWCNTs composite sample only decreased by 18.1%, which was significantly lower than the loss rate of the control aged PA6 sample (62.5%). This protocol provides a new opportunity for fabricating long-life flame retardant polyamide composites.

The effect of build orientation on both flexural quasi-static and fatigue behaviours of filament deposited PA6 polymer

The present paper aims to study the effect of manufacturing build orientation on both flexural quasi-static and fatigue behaviours of semi-crystalline polyamide 6 obtained by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), by considering the porosity and surface roughness. The glass transition temperature, melting temperature, and crystallinity degree were measured complementary to understand better the process. Fatigue analysis is here fully described in visco-elastic domain of material. The results highlight that the XZ build orientation is better than the XY one and suggest that porosity plays an important role. The obtained results are also compared with conventional techniques given by the literature review.

Stability of antibacterial modification of nanofibrous PA6/DTAB membrane during air filtration

Stable antimicrobial nanofibrous membrane for air filtration based on polyamide 6 (hereafter PA6) modified by 1-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) has been prepared by electrospinning using one-step technology, i.e. with modifying antimicrobial agent dissolved in spinning solution. Stability of antibacterial membrane function has been tested by air-blowing test to prove the permanency of chemical composition and antibacterial activity. X-ray diffraction, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) revealed the effect of modifying agent on structure and morphology of PA6 nanofibres. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrokinetic analysis and antibacterial tests proved the stability of chemical composition and antibacterial activity after air-blowing tests. Special air-blowing device has been constructed for this purpose. The results prove the applicability so prepared membrane for a long-term air-conditioning.

Migration study of caprolactam from polyamide 6 sheets into food simulants

Caprolactam, used in manufacturing polyamide (PA) 6, may threaten human health. Here, PA 6 sheets were produced by using a twin-screw extruder to evaluate its safety. Caprolactam migration concentrations from the PA 6 sheets into food simulants were evaluated according to the standard migration test conditions under the Korean Food Standards Codex (KFSC). Concentrations were investigated under various food simulants (distilled water, 4% acetic acid, 20 and 50% ethanol, and heptane) and storage conditions (at 25, 60, and 95 °C). Caprolactam migration concentrations into food simulants were determined as follows: 4% acetic acid (0.982 mg/L), distilled water (0.851 mg/L), 50% ethanol (0.624 mg/L), 20% ethanol (0.328 mg/L), and n-heptane (not detected). Migrations were determined to be under the regulatory concentration (15 mg/L) according to the KFSC test conditions. Taken together, these results verified that the standard migration test conditions by KFSC were reliable to evaluate the safety of PA 6.

Crystalline transition and morphology variation of polyamide 6/CaCl2 composite during the decomplexation process

In this work, we developed a new method to prepare porous PA6 with different morphologic feature and crystalline forms via the decomplexation of PA6/CaCl2 composite. The structures and morphology of thus obtained materials were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy (FT-IR and Raman) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) method. When amorphous PA6/CaCl2 composite films were treated in water at room temperature, PA6 re-arranges into γ form. However, decomplexation of the PA6/CaCl2 composite in boiling water produces PA6 in α crystalline form. If the PA6/CaCl2 composite is soaked in methanol, part of PA6 is dissolved or swollen in methanol/metal salt solutions. As a result, a dissolve/precipitation process occurred during the decomplexation process, which led to the formation of PA6 in α crystalline form. Further investigation demonstrates that the morphologies of the porous PA6 could be adjusted by using different solvents and/or different decomplexation conditions.
