Aromaticity of six-membered nitro energetic compounds through molecular electrostatic potential, magnetic, electronic delocalization and reactivity-based indices

The electron density depletion associated with π-hole at the ring center typical of energetic compounds was clearly revealed by the molecular electrostatic potential (ESP). In addition, the spatial arrangement of NO2 groups appears to affect the ESP value in the ring center, and therefore sensitivity to detonation. Indeed, for monocyclic nitrobenzene compounds with the same number of NO2 groups, the ESP value in the ring center decreases as the NO2 groups are more closely spaced. As expected, the central rings become less aromatic as NO2 groups are added. The MCI, PDI, PLR, NICSzz(1), FLU indices are all strongly correlated with the ESP values observed in the ring center of the set of nitrobenzenes. Aromaticity indices based on electron delocalization criteria appear to be very sensitive to small variations in aromaticity. Among magnetic-based indices, only NICSzz(1) is capable to predict small changes in aromaticity. The PLR index derived from conceptual DFT is quite relevant for predicting small variations in aromaticity. According to our results, the most suitable aromaticity index is not based on a single criterion, and that selecting it is more subtle. Therefore, it is important to combine information from several criteria to obtain a more complete description of the aromaticity of the studied compounds.

Molecular polarizabilities of some energetic compounds

The dependence of sensitivity of an explosive on its molecular structure may be mainly attributed to the molecular deformability, which can be expressed by some characteristic parameters, resonance energy for aromatic an explosive, strain energy for a strained-ring or strained-cage explosive, large π-π separation energy for a large π-π linked-explosive, bond rotational energy barriers of C-NO₂, N-NO₂, O-NO₂ for C-NO₂, N-NO₂, O-NO₂ bond-based explosives, and so on. Molecular polarizability of an explosive is also an important molecular deformability index, which can be effectively used to compare impact sensitivities of explosive's isomers, isoelectronic species, and similar structures. Interestingly, comparing the molecular polarizabilities under external electric fields with different energy levels of isomeric N₂₀(Ih) and N₂₀(D_3d) clusters and the Mo₂N₂₀ and Re₂N₂₀ complex compounds, it is found that there are different energy thresholds of significant molecular expansion.

Cultivation of diatom Pinnularia saprophila for lipid production: A comparison of methods for harvesting the lipid from the cells

The present study underlines the application of centrifugal force and pulse electric field techniques along with its comparison to resonance energy to harvest lipid from a fixed number of Pinnularia saprophila cells. Sulpho phospho vanillin method for lipid, and analysis of cells via microscopy was done. It was found that a centrifugal force of 11110×g for 15 min allowed ~3.39% lipid to ooze out with 2.5% cell destruction. Alternatively, when same numbers of diatom cells were subjected to pulse electric field at 110 kV/27 mA for 10 µs, maximum lipid production of 2.86% with 21.19% cell death was observed. It was perceived that diatom cells in a micro resonating micro fluidic chamber for 20 min harvested 4.4% of lipid with 11.16% of cell death. However, microfluidic device needs to be scaled up using cheaper material instead of silicon wafer, to be an efficient technique to milk lipid from diatoms.

Aromaticity: what does it mean?

Aromaticity/aromatic belongs to one of the most useful and popular terms in organic chemistry and related fields. However, aromaticity is not an unambiguous term; therefore, its definition is enumerative. The criteria are based on energy (increased stability), molecular geometry (very low bond lengths alternation), magnetism (induction of the diatropic ring current by external magnetic field) and reactivity (tendency to maintain π-electron structure in chemical reactions). The energetic criterion is based on resonance energy and aromatic stabilization energy, whereas harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity-on molecular geometry. Magnetism-based criteria are illustrated by local indicators (for individual rings): nucleus independent chemical shifts and proton nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts as well as the global aromaticity index-exaltation of the magnetic susceptibility. For selected homo- and hetero-cyclic compounds, illustrative data are presented in tables, which allow the comparison of the above-mentioned indices. Finally, examples of agreements or disagreements between these various aromaticity indices are presented for few representative cases.
