Asymmetric imaging through engineered Janus particle obscurants using a Monte Carlo approach for highly asymmetric scattering media

The advancement of imaging systems has significantly ameliorated various technologies, including Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Systems and Guidance Systems, by enhancing target detection, recognition, identification, positioning, and tracking capabilities. These systems can be countered by deploying obscurants like smoke, dust, or fog to hinder visibility and communication. However, these counter-systems affect the visibility of both sides of the cloud. In this sense, this manuscript introduces a new concept of a smoke cloud composed of engineered Janus particles to conceal the target image on one side while providing clear vision from the other. The proposed method exploits the unique scattering properties of Janus particles, which selectively interact with photons from different directions to open up the possibility of asymmetric imaging. This approach employs a model that combines a genetic algorithm with Discrete Dipole Approximation to optimize the Janus particles' geometrical parameters for the desired scattering properties. Moreover, we propose a Monte Carlo-based approach to calculate the image formed as photons pass through the cloud, considering highly asymmetric particles, such as Janus particles. The effectiveness of the cloud in disguising a target is evaluated by calculating the Probability of Detection (PD) and the Probability of Identification (PID) based on the constructed image. The optimized Janus particles can produce a cloud where it is possible to identify a target more than 50% of the time from one side (PID > 50%) while the target is not detected more than 50% of the time from the other side (PD < 50%). The results demonstrate that the Janus particle-engineered smoke enables asymmetric imaging with simultaneous concealment from one side and clear visualization from the other. This research opens intriguing possibilities for modern obscurant design and imaging systems through highly asymmetric and inhomogeneous particles besides target detection and identification capabilities in challenging environments.

Theoretical prediction of the scattering of spherical bubble clusters under ultrasonic excitation

Due to the nonlinear vibration of ultrasound contrast agent bubbles, a nonlinear scattered sound field will be generated when bubbles are driven by ultrasound. A bubble cluster consists of numerous bubbles gathering in a spherical space. It has been noted that the forward scattering of a bubble cluster is larger than its backscattering, and some studies have experimentally found the angular dependence of a bubble cluster's scattering signal. In this paper, a theory is proposed to explain the difference of acoustic scattering at different directions of a bubble cluster when it is driven by ultrasound, and predicts the angular distribution of scattered acoustic pressure under different parameters. The theory is proved to be correct under circumstances of small clusters and weak interactions by comparing theoretical results with numerical simulations. This theory not only sheds light on the physics of bubble cluster scattering, but also may contribute to the improvement of ultrasound imaging technology, including ultrasonic harmonic imaging and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography.

Inversion of PM2.5 atmospheric refractivity profile based on AlexNet model from the perspective of electromagnetic wave propagation

Human civilization has reached an unprecedented height, but the industrialization of economic development also brings global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, fresh water resources crisis, energy shortage, and environmental problems. In autumn and winter, haze becomes the usual state in the modern society, and PM2.5 has been becoming an important form of air pollution. The research found that PM2.5 brings great influence to the human body or daily life. To some extent, the PM2.5 also affects the propagation of electromagnetic waves near the ground, reducing the transmission performance of electromagnetic wave. Based on Mie scattering theory, this paper qualitatively analyzed the scattering effects of PM2.5 particles on every frequency band of electromagnetic wave in daily use. Then the paper takes the satellite navigation signals as a research example, selecting university of Wyoming Davis stations in Antarctica sounding data by measuring the tropospheric atmospheric meteorological parameters (including the atmosphere pressure, geopotential height of different layers, dew point temperature, relative humidity and specific humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and temperature). The paper inversed the refractive index distribution of the troposphere based on AlexNet model and described the error quantitatively. The simulation results show that the estimated error is less than 5.1455%, proving the high accuracy of the AlexNet model. To test the influence of PM2.5, the paper takes Jiuquan, a city with serious pollution, as an example. Comparison between the inversion results and IGS products shows that high concentration of PM2.5 pollution has little influence on the inversion of refractive index profile.

SU-E-T-25: Real Time Simulator for Designing Electron Dual Scattering Foil Systems

PURPOSE

To create a user friendly, accurate, real time computer simulator to facilitate the design of dual foil scattering systems for electron beams on radiotherapy accelerators. The simulator should allow for a relatively quick, initial design that can be refined and verified with subsequent Monte Carlo (MC) calculations and measurements.

METHODS

The simulator consists of an analytical algorithm for calculating electron fluence and a graphical user interface (GUI) C++ program. The algorithm predicts electron fluence using Fermi-Eyges multiple Coulomb scattering theory with a refined Moliere formalism for scattering powers. The simulator also estimates central-axis x-ray dose contamination from the dual foil system. Once the geometry of the beamline is specified, the simulator allows the user to continuously vary primary scattering foil material and thickness, secondary scattering foil material and Gaussian shape (thickness and sigma), and beam energy. The beam profile and x-ray contamination are displayed in real time.

RESULTS

The simulator was tuned by comparison of off-axis electron fluence profiles with those calculated using EGSnrc MC. Over the energy range 7-20 MeV and using present foils on the Elekta radiotherapy accelerator, the simulator profiles agreed to within 2% of MC profiles from within 20 cm of the central axis. The x-ray contamination predictions matched measured data to within 0.6%. The calculation time was approximately 100 ms using a single processor, which allows for real-time variation of foil parameters using sliding bars.

CONCLUSIONS

A real time dual scattering foil system simulator has been developed. The tool has been useful in a project to redesign an electron dual scattering foil system for one of our radiotherapy accelerators. The simulator has also been useful as an instructional tool for our medical physics graduate students.
