Abstract
INTRODUCTION Surgical societies provide a plethora of resources for trainees; however, these opportunities are often underused due to suboptimal guidance, sponsorship, or mentorship. Here, we present the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS) experience in enhancing the trainee experience and engagement in a surgical society focused on professional development. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted an interactive idea-generating session during the 2022 SAAS Conference with all Associate Members (trainees) present in Honolulu, HI. Recurrent themes, concepts, and ideas/suggestions were carefully considered when planning the next SAAS Conference in Baltimore, MD. We employed a more targeted approach to trainee engagement at the 2023 SAAS Conference, with breakout sessions geared toward various levels of trainees, in addition to increased social events and networking opportunities. We obtained feedback from trainees in attendance through an electronic survey and informal conversations with faculty and Associate Members. RESULTS Opportunities for surgical subspecialty networking was the most well-received portion of our formal Career Development program. The majority of trainees in attendance were medical students or junior residents who valued the exposure to junior faculty and those in leadership positions at academic institutions. The addition of a group text for easy communication among trainees and informal social activities for Associate Member networking among themselves were crucial in improving the overall conference experience. CONCLUSIONS Opportunities to maximize trainee engagement in surgical societies are heightened during in-person conferences. Targeted session topics, guided networking opportunities, and creating channels for easier communication along with more social events have enhanced the overall experience for aspiring and current surgical trainees.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The transfer validity of portable laparoscopy simulation is well established. However, attempts to integrate take-home simulation into surgical training have met with inconsistent engagement worldwide, as for example in our 2014-15 study of an Incentivised Laparoscopy Practice programme (ILPv1). Drawing on learning from our subsequent multi-centre study examining barriers and facilitators, we revised the programme for 2018 onwards. We now report on engagement with the 2018-2022 versions of this home-based simulation programme (ILP v2.1-2.3). METHODS In ILP v2.1-2.3, three consecutive year-groups of new-start Core Surgical Trainees (n = 48, 46 and 53) were loaned portable simulators. The 6-month education programme included induction, technical support, and intermittent feedback. Six tasks were prescribed, with video instruction and charting of metric scores. Video uploads were required and scored by faculty. A pass resulted in an eCertificate, expected at Annual Review (but not mandatory for progression). ILP was set within a wider reform, "Improving Surgical Training". RESULTS ILP v2.1-2.3 saw pass rates of 94%, 76% and 70% respectively (45/48, 35/46 and 37/53 trainees), compared with only 26% (7/27) in ILP v1, despite now including some trainees not intending careers in laparoscopic specialties. The ILP v2.2 group all reported their engagement with the whole simulation strategy was hampered by the COVID19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Simply providing take-home simulators, no matter how good, is not enough. To achieve trainee engagement, a whole programme is required, with motivated learners, individual and group practice, intermittent feedback, and clear goals and assessments. ILP is a complex intervention, best understood as a "reform within a reform, within a context."

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many institutions implemented telehealth initiatives to provide social support for patients during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. Little is known about the impact of these programs on patient support persons and the trainees who facilitated them. OBJECTIVE To assess perceptions of a resident physician and medical student-driven video visit program. METHODS We designed and implemented a trainee-led video visit navigation program across three affiliated urban hospitals to facilitate video visits between patients and their support persons. We used descriptive statistics to understand the patient population served by the program and employed surveys for support persons and trainees to assess attitudes on the program. RESULTS From April to June 2020, a total of 443 video visits were completed. Surveys were conducted for 101 out of 184 (54.9%) support persons and 39 out of 65 (60.0%) of medical trainees. Surveys demonstrated that video visits helped alleviate the stress and anxiety of support persons having a hospitalized loved one they could not visit. For trainees, facilitating these connections helped mitigate stress and provided a mechanism to contribute to the pandemic response. CONCLUSION Telehealth navigation programs provide high levels of connection for patients and their support persons during the COVID-19 pandemic and potentially beyond. Residents and medical students involved in these initiatives mobilized telehealth modalities to improve experiences with care delivery.
